a very special quilt

Welcome to finish it up Friday!
This weekend I'm sewing my heart out at the 5th (!!!!) annual Gruber's retreat. One of the members of our group lost her husband this year. I can't imagine the pain that she's gone through in the past few months. My heart aches for her. The members of our retreat group secretly conspired and made her a comfort quilt...because we are quilters, and that's what we do! I was lucky enough to be the one to bind it. (And I'm not being sarcastic when I say that! :) ) It was so neat to put the finishing touches on the quilt that was made by friends that were brought together by the internet from 7 different states. This weekend we presented it to her at retreat. I'm so glad that it's gifted, because I'm terrible at secrets! :)

edited to add: the tutorial is called Rollin' Along (written by my friend Shelly, also one of our retreat friends!) and it can be found here.

Now it's your turn! Please link up and thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

What a gorgeous quilt and thoughtful idea! I was just in a Grubers last week, they have a great selection of fabrics...spent way too much!

What a beautiful quilt! I can't imagine losing my husband. I'm sure that she will truly treasure all the thought and care that went into making that quilt for her.

And just as a side note... sewing on the binding is my favorite part of making a quilt!

A truly amazing quilt! What a fabulous way to offer comfort. My quilt guild is doing this for a member who lost her husband suddenly...it is so sad and while I cannot imagine the pain each of these ladies is in, a small gesture is sure to make a big impact!

I have to say, I love the way this quilt looks! I've been finding myself with free time that I don't know what to do with lately, so I think I might give quilting a shot. I think it would be a great hobby, and I could give the finished quilts to my family and friends!

I happen to know that a quilt from internet friends is a comfort. My daughter passed after a terrible bought with breast cancer. My friends got together and made me a wonderful quilt. I treasure it. When I am sitting with my quilt warming me, I think about those angels, and my daughter, the angel in Heaven.
You all did a wonderful thing for your friend. She will treasure your gift.
Hugs

What a wonderful gift - and I love the way you put it: "a comfort quilt...because we are quilters, and that's what we do!"
Yes to that! As a quilter, I can relate! Beautiful work, and such a treasure for your friend, from her friends!

You quilters are super to be friends like this to a group member. I had to make a difficult decision and divorce my second husband. It was tough because we still loved each other - there were just issues that were affecting my health to the point I was starting to die. Anyhow, we had been divorced 7 months. Last July 30, I had my second MRI to determine that my breast cancer was not back and in my brain. The same day my daughter had a D&C to terminate an unsustainable pregnancy. Then the police chaplain knocked on the door to tell me my husband was found dead in his apartment. His family wanted nothing to do with him and they did only what they had to do. His car is still in my driveway because the heirs will not sign a document so our church can retitle it. Anyhow, my church community offered to do nothing for me. No food, one card from a community (class) of probably 200 people, no calls, no nothing except the one card. I joined a grief group at church and have had great support from people I had never met. I have just joined a widow's group and we are hoping to heal together. You are amazing to do this for your friend. It will mean lots to her. I'm trying to learn to extend grace and mercy to others as I have no idea of their burdens. I'm shy and I'm trying to make an effort to speak to people because people absolutely ignored me. I don't want others to have the same experience.
