tumblers

I finished my tumbler quilt! A good friend sent me the pieces already cut out. What a sweet gift! All I had to do was assemble the blocks. Rather than baste and then quilt it, I basted it (sort of), then turned the quilt. This eliminated the binding. I was a little nervous to do so, since I hadn't done that since my first quilt, but I really wanted to leave the edges wavy.
After turning it, I hand quilted it using this vintage thread that came from my grandma's house. Perfect! (The thread, not the stitches. :) )
The back was pieced from the stash. I love how the black stitching worked on this quilt, both on the front and the back. I wasn't so sure it would work, but it ended up being just the right accent for all the colors. AND the backing. I love it when things come together like that.
I had to include this photo of my little helper guy. He's such a trooper. Sometimes I wonder if he hates being the tallest kid in the family. :) I just love this photo.
The quilt finishes 53" x 65"....it's the perfect lap size. It's already gotten a lot of use!

It's beautiful! I love that you left the edges wavy and used what was in your stash for the back, it looks so great! And your little helper is too cute! I'm sure this will be a well loved quilt!

Love it! You just keep adding more onto my "I really want to make that" list. I just have one question, what is that white stuff on the ground? We haven't seen much of around my way this year. I guess after last year's snowfall, we should be thankful.

I read through all the above comments ... and it seems like maybe I'm the only one who is confused about what you mean by flipping the edges? Did you do the edges before quilting it?
I really LOVE the way this looks, please enlighten me? :)

this is amazing!! i love the tumblers and the hand stitching makes it so special

Can I be honest and say that the tumbler blocks don't really appeal to me. I think it's their irregular shape and my linear mind. But I can definitely appreciate hand quilting and awesome scraps!

Aww AJ!!! Your tumbler quilt looks so awesome! Ours are finished off the same, turned and hand quilted so we really do have Twinkie quilts!!!

I would love to see more info on how you turned the quilt. I have done some tumbler quilts also, and I would love to finish them the same way. But I'm always nervous about doing something new so I always chop off the cute edges and bind it.

I am also a new reader of your blog and I love this old fashioned block. You have used lovely fabrics and the photos in the snow make me very jealous. I am an Aussie in the middle of a hot summer and lust after snow. Thanks for giving me pleasure from the great quilt and the snow.

Cheers,

I love tumbler quilts! And I adore yours. The first ever "big" quilt I made was a tumbler, out of recycled flannel check shirts. I tied it instead of quilting it, and it's a bit worse for wear now, but I still love it!

Diane Swett said...

what a lovley quilt. I like the Idea of using the vintage thread - it will bring warmth and good vibes to all who climb under it...

Such a great look.It look so different and colorful fabrics.Tumbler blog is really interesting.

SewSara said...

Amanda - one more question for ya!
When you hand quilted it, did you use frames of any sort? or did you just pin-baste it and work with it on your lap?
I've really been wanting to hand quilt something, especially for something to do while waiting for this baby. Thx!!

Abby said...

I have been loving tumbler quilts lately but have never attempted one. Sure needs to get on my to do list. I love the hand quilting also!

That is fabulous! I love the design and colors. Be careful of the antique thread. I had some of my grandma's too, on the old wooden spools. I was so excited to "waste-no, want-not) and use it on a wip of my grandma's. When I used it in my machine, it splintered all up and jammed. I got a leacture from my sewing machine shop guy, "Thread expires," he simply told me. Put a collection in a nice, old mason jar and enjoy displaying them. If you can think of other uses for this great, old thread, I'd love to hear it! Thanks for your inspirational blog.

This is beautiful!!! I love it! Did you mark the quilting lines before you quilted? Or did you just wing it? How do you mark your quilts?
