Another one off the "in progress" list. I'm down to 17! Woo-hoo!
This quilt is made up of all solids. I LOVE solids so much. This is probably one of the final versions of this quilt that I will make. I've already made it in orange, green and aqua. I've made variations of it in orange and grey, too. IF I were to make another version of this, I think I'd do it up in reds and browns to match my living room. It doesn't sound like I'm ready to be done with this design yet, does it? :)
This is the back. I love to make two sided quilts. It gives me a good excuse not to label it, because I'd hate to "ruin" one side.
To quilt it, I did an all over swirl quilting pattern. Liz and I were discussing this quilting method and we both agree that it is a much easier and more natural technique than stippling. For those of you who have a hard time with stippling, you may want to give it a try. It also seems to me that swirly quilting goes a lot faster than stippling, which is handy when you have 17 WIP's. :)
The quilt measures about 55" x 70".
About the name of this quilt....when we moved into our house, it was apparent that the previous woman of the house (Sue) liked blue. A lot. We have 2 blue bathrooms, HAD a blue kitchen, and a blue basement. Oh, and our master bedroom has blue carpet, too. So, "Sue likes blue" is a phase I've uttered a lot over the past few years. And will probably continue to do so for a long time to come. I like blue, too, but not quite that much. It makes a fun quilt name, though, and that's what really matters, right?

I love this one! Blue is my favorite color. But I'm not Sue! =) And I agree about the quilting design - it's definitely easier than stippling.

i so much agree with you on swirl quilting! i usually stipple and did my first swirl pattern just the other day.....i don't think i'll be doing too much stippling anymore!!

I think this is my favorite color in the series of quilts. And I am not as big a blue fan as Sue. I just love the way it looks with the different shades of blue you have put together. And I love the way you quilted it. Nice job, AmandaJean, you are knocking those UFOs off the list one by one. I think you are going to make your goal!
Blue is my favorite color, too. When we were home buying we toured one house that had blue carpet, blue vinyl flooring and blue kitchen countertops, definitely too much!

I've just ordered a bunch of solids from Hancocks (free shipping!!! this week) and am keen to use more solids in my quilts. Sue likes Blue is lovely!
I am also going to have a go at the swirly quilting; my stippling still leaves a lot to be desired - it often has the unexpected swirl in it! Swirling comes more naturally than stippling for me too.

I like the loopy quilting too. On my first attempt at stippling, I kept doing loops ... next time I'm going to go with the flow!
I'm not a blue person but this is a great quilt series. I luv the back! I also luv solids or reads as solid. Swirly quilting is great for both sides. This is a keeper for sure!

I was so excited to see swirls and then to read your comparison of swirls and stipples! I've ALWAYS struggled with stippling!(they'd look like weird parameciums) have always loved doing the swirls. Happy now to have your opinion on the matter, especially since it agrees with mine!:) Great quilt!

This is a beautiful quilt! I love the orange version as well. I'm still new to quilting and just starting practicing free motion. I'm working on a Christmas quilt now and would like to free motion quilt it, but stippling is so hard for me! I decided to do the swirly pattern and was so happy to see that you used this pattern as well. It looks great when it's all finished!

Okay. You've given me the encouragement to learn the all over swirl pattern for quilting. The little bit that I've tried it, I tend to make the loops to tight and small. But I really like the looks of it and if you say it's so much faster than stippling, I'm going to try to get good at it!

But I know what you mean about that...the woman that owned this house before us LOVED pink. Everything was pink... two bedrooms, both upstairs baths...even all the woodwork in the house has a slight pink tinge to it. And even the outside was painted a pinky-beige. Ugh. I detest pink. I've finally eradicated as much as I can. Much better now!

great quilt name & you are so not doen with that design. I am using it currently as well - scrappy solids with Kona coal sashing & some kona snow for consistency. & can you guess what is in m centers? Novelties. :o) I know so predictable.
See after you do the red one for your living room, you will want to try out scrappy.

"Sue Likes Blue" is so funny! When we moved into our old house 9 years ago there was so much dark brown, we named it after the previous owner..."Alfred Brown". We've gotten rid of most of it except the trim around the barn!
Love the quilt. I love that pattern. You can do it over and over, and it always turns out slightly different. I'm with you on the loopy quilting. With stippling you can paint yourself into a corner so easily. I am shocked that you have 17 WIPs! That is so unlike you. And so like me. = )

I love blue! (It's a french thing...in NH people who own blue houses are usually french). My kitchen is blue, my bedroom; a different shade of blue and my upstairs bathroom a deep sea blue. I also tend to gravitate towards making quilts that incorporate a lot of blue.

Love the solids too, and yes, I find swirls so much easier, I've tried a few times but have given up - I can't stipple! I like swirls and now pebbles even better -

I am a new fan of your blog! I discovered it this weekend with two sick children at home and have had a lot to catch up on!! I love the "Sue is Blue" although the "Circle Time" has insprired me to make a trip to the quilt shop (and Ikea!) when the kids are feeling better! Question though. You have such beatiful machine quilting. Do you use a long arm or a regular machine?

Your blog is so inspiring! I have done a tiny bit of quilting in the past but I would love to do more so I have some requests:) Could you maybe do a quick post on some of these questions?
1. What is the best way to cut your fabric so that it is precise and square?
2. When you sew your pieces and when you stipple, do you just use a straight stitch and do one seam?
3. What are the best tips for making a sturdy, beautiful quilt? (ie: is quality thread the most important? pricey fabric? what's the biggest bang for my buck?)
4. How do you make your finished quilt perfectly squared? Or is this not very important?
I know, these are probably lame but I just need a little direction on how to start using up some of the fabric in my basement! Thank you!

I have to say I really really love the blue quilt so amazing. As for labels, I have been thinking about that alot lately and I may have a solution. You might want to check out Red Pepper Quilts blog. She used a twill label that she had custom made. I really like it and am working on one for my quilts too. I will have to email you the link as it won't let me put it in here. I will be interested to know what you think.
