sue likes blue
Another one off the "in progress" list. I'm down to 17! Woo-hoo!
This quilt is made up of all solids. I LOVE solids so much. This is probably one of the final versions of this quilt that I will make. I've already made it in orange, green and aqua. I've made variations of it in orange and grey, too. IF I were to make another version of this, I think I'd do it up in reds and browns to match my living room. It doesn't sound like I'm ready to be done with this design yet, does it? :)
This is the back. I love to make two sided quilts. It gives me a good excuse not to label it, because I'd hate to "ruin" one side.
To quilt it, I did an all over swirl quilting pattern. Liz and I were discussing this quilting method and we both agree that it is a much easier and more natural technique than stippling. For those of you who have a hard time with stippling, you may want to give it a try. It also seems to me that swirly quilting goes a lot faster than stippling, which is handy when you have 17 WIP's. :)
The quilt measures about 55" x 70".
About the name of this quilt....when we moved into our house, it was apparent that the previous woman of the house (Sue) liked blue. A lot. We have 2 blue bathrooms, HAD a blue kitchen, and a blue basement. Oh, and our master bedroom has blue carpet, too. So, "Sue likes blue" is a phase I've uttered a lot over the past few years. And will probably continue to do so for a long time to come. I like blue, too, but not quite that much. It makes a fun quilt name, though, and that's what really matters, right?
I love this one! Blue is my favorite color. But I'm not Sue! =) And I agree about the quilting design - it's definitely easier than stippling.

Wow!! Amazingly beautiful! I've been thinking up a quilt for my father for Christmas that's all solids with blues & grays. This is inspiring me!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I agree, that swirls which have permission to intersect are a more natural movement than stippling.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I'll have to give the swirls a try - it may be tricky since my hands 'know' stipple. Perhaps I need to do some more minis for practice:)
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgous! I particularly like the swirly quilting, it's fab. Great job, very inspiring (as usual)!
ReplyDeleteI see a little bit of green in there too...
ReplyDeleteLooks great. That quilting really is wonderful. I can see how it would be easier than stippling for sure. I was doodling it the other day and it just flows so well.
I like your blues, too! Cute story behind the title.
ReplyDeleteSuch a calming quilt - gorgeous!
ReplyDeletei so much agree with you on swirl quilting! i usually stipple and did my first swirl pattern just the other day.....i don't think i'll be doing too much stippling anymore!!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Well done!
ReplyDeleteDee likes blue too!:)
ReplyDeleteI am definitely doing that swirly loop de loop on my next quilt!! I am always fighting myself to not cross over my lines and that gives me major permission!!
Your quilt is beautiful, and I LOVE the name!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. i love the simplicity of it. I think I'd like to play around with this myself in some fun colorways.
ReplyDeleteDo you have a tutorial for this one?
Love the contrast between the "squares" and the loops!! I really love to hear the story behind the quilting. so much fun :)
ReplyDeleteI think this is my favorite color in the series of quilts. And I am not as big a blue fan as Sue. I just love the way it looks with the different shades of blue you have put together. And I love the way you quilted it. Nice job, AmandaJean, you are knocking those UFOs off the list one by one. I think you are going to make your goal!
ReplyDeleteBlue is my favorite color, too. When we were home buying we toured one house that had blue carpet, blue vinyl flooring and blue kitchen countertops, definitely too much!
ReplyDeleteI like your quilt, though!
another fabulous quilt! I was trying to figure out how to quilt my latest UFO just moments ago - you've provided the solution - swirly quilting it is! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love that I got to see it pre-finish! :-) And your loopy quilting looks really great. Yay!
ReplyDeleteLove love love that awesome improv-y back.
Love it! I will have to try that quilting. It is lovely.
ReplyDeleteThat back is almost gees bend. LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteSue sounds like me lol. I love blue, though I don't know I'd do everything in blue.
ReplyDeleteI love it. Well done. I have alot of solids in my stash so this will be on My To Do list to use some of them up.
ReplyDeleteSolids and wonky log cabins... the BEST combination :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great name! It occurs to me I have almost no solids in my stash. I can't wait to hit the goal on my fabric diet so I can go off the rails!
ReplyDeleteCute story -- cute name and love the quilting. Just might have to get that a try someday. Soon. grin
ReplyDeleteVery nice! I love the quilting and the story behind the name is great.
ReplyDeleteLove the swirl! How about a tut on this quilt? I bet you'd have a whole lot of joiners (including me)! I love it!
ReplyDeleteYour quilting is so neat and beautiful. Do you have a long-arm quilting machine or do you do such beautiful work on a standard machine?
ReplyDeleteYour quilt looks wonderful. I agree with you about the swirls - much easier on the eye as well as on the arms while sewing. I'll be swirling this weekend.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the blue! And now, I'll begin the new mantra..."Red and Brown. Red and Brown. Red and Brown."
ReplyDeletegorgeous as usual!
ReplyDeleteI've just ordered a bunch of solids from Hancocks (free shipping!!! this week) and am keen to use more solids in my quilts. Sue likes Blue is lovely!
ReplyDeleteI am also going to have a go at the swirly quilting; my stippling still leaves a lot to be desired - it often has the unexpected swirl in it! Swirling comes more naturally than stippling for me too.
Fun quilt indeed!
I like the loopy quilting too. On my first attempt at stippling, I kept doing loops ... next time I'm going to go with the flow!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a blue person but this is a great quilt series. I luv the back! I also luv solids or reads as solid. Swirly quilting is great for both sides. This is a keeper for sure!
ReplyDeleteI love quilts made of all solids! I have an aunt whose nickname is Auntie Blue because of her obsession with blue hehe
ReplyDeleteCool, cool quilt...you really inspire me!
ReplyDeleteI was so excited to see swirls and then to read your comparison of swirls and stipples! I've ALWAYS struggled with stippling!(they'd look like weird parameciums) have always loved doing the swirls. Happy now to have your opinion on the matter, especially since it agrees with mine!:) Great quilt!
ReplyDeleteBlue is not my personally favorite color. However, it is my best friend's favorite color...and her name is Sue, too!
ReplyDeleteI love it and I LOVE the name!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quilt! I love the orange version as well. I'm still new to quilting and just starting practicing free motion. I'm working on a Christmas quilt now and would like to free motion quilt it, but stippling is so hard for me! I decided to do the swirly pattern and was so happy to see that you used this pattern as well. It looks great when it's all finished!
ReplyDeleteLove it! It's very calming.
ReplyDeleteYour swirling quilting looks terrific! I'm going to have to give that a try. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, but no - doesn't sound like you're done with that design yet...
I love the design and as they say 'quilting makes the quilt' - it is wonderful, a nice change from stippling!
ReplyDeleteHugs - Lurline♥
I like it a lot. :) J's favorite color is blue, too. Hence the blue bedroom, and our blue dishes in the kitchen. LOL
ReplyDeletewonderful name for a blue quilt! love the swirly quilting!
ReplyDeleteoh man! I LOVE it! I also really love the back. And the quilting. Pretty much all of it!
ReplyDeletefrom 8 comments to 49 in the time it took me to read your post from when i clicked on it... at least i was productive and got a lot of sewing done! i hope you aren't done yet because i want to see a red and brown version!
ReplyDeletei really like the swirl quilting! i've had such a hard time getting my stippling to look like something other than a 3 year old scribble, i might try this with my next quilt.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great quilt! I really love that quilting method too. I've done it before, but not with some big loops. I like your loops lots! I'm going to have to give that one a go.
ReplyDeleteOkay. You've given me the encouragement to learn the all over swirl pattern for quilting. The little bit that I've tried it, I tend to make the loops to tight and small. But I really like the looks of it and if you say it's so much faster than stippling, I'm going to try to get good at it!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely gorgeous. I love it!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt and quilting. Love the back, too. Gotta try that on my quilts. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt, I am going to try that pattern for quilting, rather than stipple.
ReplyDeleteIt is very interesting for me to read that blog. Thank you for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to them. I definitely want to read more soon.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and I love the reason for the naming of it.
ReplyDeleteThis quilt is a hit with me: I love blue, I love the simplicity of the design, and I love the back. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHi Amandajean,
ReplyDeleteswirl quilting pattern looks lovely, and I agree that it has a more natural technique. It's what I'm going to use on my WIP.
thanks..

wonderfull
ReplyDeletewow what a great quilt, love all the other colours tooo. What is the pattern. Ok how do you do swirly quilting.........Please a tutorial.
ReplyDeleteJust beautiful - I love the cool blue colours and the back is great too.
ReplyDeleteWow, I love this quilt!
ReplyDeleteIt is sparkling!
Love your quilt! Blue is my favorite color, and I'm not Sue.
ReplyDeleteBut I know what you mean about that...the woman that owned this house before us LOVED pink. Everything was pink... two bedrooms, both upstairs baths...even all the woodwork in the house has a slight pink tinge to it. And even the outside was painted a pinky-beige. Ugh. I detest pink. I've finally eradicated as much as I can. Much better now!
Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAll your quilts are gorgeous. I so wish I could quilt as good as you. The quilting looks excellent. You are right and I think the loppy quilting would be quicker than stippling. 'My the force be with you' in getting you WIP's done.
ReplyDeleteWell done. It looks really good.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt and I think I am going to try your quilting, it looks great! I can see why you have made many versions of this quilt. It is a very versatile pattern. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeletePenny likes blue too....I love this quilt. I also love how you put a row on the back side of the quilt!
ReplyDeleteI love your series of square quilts - especially the orange and grey for your boys. I love that color combination!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. I love blue too. I am trying to free motion and find stippling hard and I think the swirling would be more natural for me. Thanks I am going to try it.
ReplyDeletegreat quilt name & you are so not doen with that design. I am using it currently as well - scrappy solids with Kona coal sashing & some kona snow for consistency. & can you guess what is in m centers? Novelties. :o) I know so predictable.
ReplyDeleteSee after you do the red one for your living room, you will want to try out scrappy.
When I read reversible quilt and no label, I thought, "How is Sue going to know that Amanda Jean made her such a special quilt in 2009?" You inpire me to name my quilts. I just don't know if I can come up with names as clever as yours.
ReplyDeleteso beautiful! i love it!
ReplyDeleteSo lovely!! I've been wanting to make a second throw for the living room, maybe I'll try solids. And you've inspired me to try free-motion quilting again!
ReplyDelete"Sue Likes Blue" is so funny! When we moved into our old house 9 years ago there was so much dark brown, we named it after the previous owner..."Alfred Brown". We've gotten rid of most of it except the trim around the barn!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. I love that pattern. You can do it over and over, and it always turns out slightly different. I'm with you on the loopy quilting. With stippling you can paint yourself into a corner so easily. I am shocked that you have 17 WIPs! That is so unlike you. And so like me. = )
ReplyDeleteIn case you were wondering, Jeri likes blue, too!
ReplyDeleteI love blue! (It's a french thing...in NH people who own blue houses are usually french). My kitchen is blue, my bedroom; a different shade of blue and my upstairs bathroom a deep sea blue. I also tend to gravitate towards making quilts that incorporate a lot of blue.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilting .... I may need to do that on my winding ways quilt!
Love the solids too, and yes, I find swirls so much easier, I've tried a few times but have given up - I can't stipple! I like swirls and now pebbles even better -
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful quilt sweety! I just love going around and looking at what others make;) you did a great job hugs
ReplyDeleteLove it! I really should dig into the solids a bit.
ReplyDeletelovely! This quilt is one of my favorite designs of yours
ReplyDeletelooks good. maybe in february when it's my turn for the quilting bee i'll use this design. how big are your blocks. you can email me whenever or tell me at church sometime. i guess i can make them as big as i want but i think this size looks good.
ReplyDeleteSue likes blue... I love that! I wonder if Sue knows she's famous now?
ReplyDeleteI love the solids... you have a way of making them sing, Amanda! I've always loved solids. There's something so basic and pure about them - and in the creative hands such as yours... they come alive!
I wonder what Sue's new house looks like, and I wonder if Sue still likes blue...
Love the quilt, but especially the quilting. I am going to have to try some swirls on my next project. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteit is AWESOME!
ReplyDeleteand the name couldn't be more perfect!!!
Beautiful quilt, as always! I continue to admire your work and be inspired by you to create more. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI am a new fan of your blog! I discovered it this weekend with two sick children at home and have had a lot to catch up on!! I love the "Sue is Blue" although the "Circle Time" has insprired me to make a trip to the quilt shop (and Ikea!) when the kids are feeling better! Question though. You have such beatiful machine quilting. Do you use a long arm or a regular machine?
ReplyDeleteAgain, love your blog!!!
anonymous,
ReplyDeletei do all my own quilting on a regular machine. you can read more about it on my FAQ page.
aj
ha ha. that is funny! hey, i won a bunch of pre cut circles at a quilt bingo party---maybe i should make that circle time quilt.
ReplyDeletehttp:whosies.blogspot.com
Beautiful!! Congrats on your latest finish!
ReplyDeleteEmily likes blue, too! :)
ReplyDeleteOh I love this one. I love blue too but not for basements! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is so inspiring! I have done a tiny bit of quilting in the past but I would love to do more so I have some requests:) Could you maybe do a quick post on some of these questions?
ReplyDelete1. What is the best way to cut your fabric so that it is precise and square?
2. When you sew your pieces and when you stipple, do you just use a straight stitch and do one seam?
3. What are the best tips for making a sturdy, beautiful quilt? (ie: is quality thread the most important? pricey fabric? what's the biggest bang for my buck?)
4. How do you make your finished quilt perfectly squared? Or is this not very important?
I know, these are probably lame but I just need a little direction on how to start using up some of the fabric in my basement! Thank you!
Love the name. So funny. And another great quilt with stitch perfection.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great quilt ... I love the combination of the blues on white .
ReplyDeleteCan I ask which line of solids you have used ??
I just did my first swirly quilt, and I almost loved it more than stippling - and it's faster - hurray!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE the solids. Only 17?! Makes me look sane.
ReplyDeleteI have to say I really really love the blue quilt so amazing. As for labels, I have been thinking about that alot lately and I may have a solution. You might want to check out Red Pepper Quilts blog. She used a twill label that she had custom made. I really like it and am working on one for my quilts too. I will have to email you the link as it won't let me put it in here. I will be interested to know what you think.
ReplyDeletebesutiful!!
ReplyDeletethis is a timeless quilt design...i love the loopy quilting too! congrats on #600 too. hard to believe it's been that many. time does fly! have a happy thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteIs there a pattern for the Sue Loves Blue design? All of your quilts are inspiring!!
ReplyDeletethis is the most beautiful quilt i have ever seen. i love blue and my name is sue.
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite way to quilt - alas, my machine needs a trip to the repair man.
