This quilt is so very pink. I LOVE it.
It is for my monochromatic quilt series, which has been so much fun. You can see more of the series here. Still to come in the series: red, orange, purple, and brown.
It is all scraps, randomly pieced.
The pieced back is from my stash. I had bought a green polka dot for the backing, but I changed my mind at the last minute and came up with this instead. I like it because it matches the scrappy feel of the front. Someday, though, I am going to try a contrasting (but coordinating) color for the back of a quilt.
Look at all that random pink goodness. It makes me giddy.
I used the from back to front quilting technique on this.
Overall, it went very well. I didn't have tension issues using this technique except for one time, and that time was so bad that I would have had to rip out whether it was on the back or the front. I felt like it was easier to quilt it randomly, which was what I was after. Sometimes I think I subconsciously follow the seam lines on the front, and it is hard to keep it random. The one thing that was a little tricky was the bottom (which is the front of the quilt) got puckered a few times along the edges because it was smaller than the top. So I had to do a bit of stitch ripping and then I ended up quilting it from the reverse side. And just a few times there were a few ridges of seams that hung up a bit in the face plate of my machine, but it was pretty minor.
All in all, it was a good experiment and I am glad that I tried it.

I can see (from a non-quilter's view) that it would be easy to subconsciously follow seam lines when quilting. I like that you tried something different.

back to front quilting is basically quilting with the back side up rather than the front side. I basted it with the front taped on the floor, then added the layer of batting and then the backing was on the top. I pinned it and quilted it with the backing on top. does that make sense? originally the intent with that technique is to be able to follow the design of the backing fabric to give you a guide of how to quilt it. I just tried it to make it easier to quilt because the top had so many seams in it.

I use a JUKI TL-98 Q that I LOVE. It's straight stitch only, but it is a professional grade machine. I use it to piece and to quilt all my quilts. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who is in the market for a new one.

My vote is to try out a contrasting backing with your upcoming brown quilt ... maybe a robin's egg blue? Or some more pink? Or purple? Hmmm ... I think the fabrics I am using for the quilt-a-long are influecing me ...

Very very pretty! I'm interested to read that you sew with a professional Juki - I used one of these in an upholstery course I did a few years ago - it was awesome - makes domestic sewing machines look almost holly hobby-like! What are you going to do with your monochromatic quilts when they are done - hang them together? That would be so striking!

What size needle do you use for machine quilting? I use an 80 for piecing, but have some machine quilting needles that are a 90. Is 90 standard for machine quilting? Do you use an 80 for piecing or a 70??

I use either a 80 or a 90 (whichever I have on hand) for piecing and quilting, I don't change them out for each task.

I LOVE the pink the best so far out of your monochromatic quilts. I love the randomness of it and the pieced backing. I like the way it puckered, that makes a quilt seem more cozy to me. I can't wait for the next one!
