crazy rails-a completed quilt

Welcome to finish it up Friday!

This week, I completed my 300th quilt (baby size or larger) to date! I started quilting in 2000, so that means I complete, on average, about 18.75 quilts a year. That's not crazy at all, is it? :) I am so glad that in 2006, when I stared my blog, I took the time to look back and count how many quilts I had made up to that point, so I have a record of them all. (Or pretty darn close!)
This quilt was inspired by a vintage quilt that Rebecca brought to a guild meeting awhile back. (You can see the original inspiration quilt in this post.) The strips are cut at 1 1/2" wide, so the rails finish at 1" x 3" each.
That means that about 1/3 of this quilt is seam allowance! It wasn't very fun to quilt, for that reason, but it is a GREAT scrap buster! I quilted it on my Juki with an all over loopy pattern with Aurifil thread, color 2615. I love that the thread blends with every single fabric.
For the backing, I used a beautiful aqua solid (Michael Miller cotton couture) that is so soft and smooth. The binding is good neighbors peaks in orangina. I machine bound it for a quick and durable finish.
The quilt measures 48" x 60" and it is scrap project #192! I'm very pleased with this finish!

Now, it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you, as always, for joining me for finish it up Friday!

This is a beauty! Congratulations on 300--that's amazing!

It's beautiful. When doing something like this do you actually check every blocks placement as far as color balance or do you just kind of wing it?

Amazing! So good that you've kept track, what a legacy of handmade goodness you've been creating through the years. Bravo!

I'm like you, this type of quilt is the kind that I could stare at endlessly - I love it's scrappy wonderfulness!

You were very wise to keep track of all the quilts you've made throughout the years. I have no idea of how many I've made but I do know it is in the 100's. I love the crazy rails quilt, what a great scrap buster!

Love the perky scrappy rails. Congratulations for not quiting and going on to make hundreds of wonderful quilts.

Wow to 300 quilts AND this rail quilt. Love it!

I like the round quilting on the rail fence. It is a great contrast to the seam allowances! What determination to sew all those seams. I like your birch trees also. Alas, I have been in my 'studio' looking for the floor. My two cats are confused that I have spent days up there purging, folding, putting things away, etc. Seems like that is my fate in January. Love your blog. We had 8" snow last weekend and 65 degrees today in VA Beach.

Love it, love it, love it! You've got such beautiful scraps! And 300 quilts? That's got to be some kind of record!

It's so great that you have a good record of all the quilts you have made--and that amount of quilts is amazing. I'm inspired to go back through my quilts and attempt better documentation.

I really love this quilt, and it seemed like a good answer to one I need to make. But I'm pretty sure my quilting skills aren't up to quilting that much seam allowance, so maybe some slightly bigger blocks for a bed quilt.

300! That is quite a milestone. How wonderful that you've got the documentation to actually count them, and probably pictures of most. I imagine it's fun to look at how your skills and color sense have progressed, too.

That had to be thick with all those little seams. Looks lovely!

I love the comment that 1/3 is seam allowance......something we do not often realize until quilting actually starts.....beautiful quilt and great you have kept such good records. incredible amount!

Love this scrap quilt and the light stripe in the middle of each block. I've stuffed this one in the back of my brain for a scrap quilt idea. I think those are about the same block dimensions of a rail fence doll quilt in all brown, and it's nice to see it in full color. Congrats on the 300! I keep track of mine on my blog too and have made 135 since 2011.

Thank you for all of the link ups! I love seeing other artists work but am not very efficient at keeping track of a list. This is perfect!

You are a very prolific quilt person! 300?!? That's crazy...good!
The rail quilt is so pretty. I love the colors in it. I have some strips already sewn together that are the same size. Maybe they are a start for a quilt like that for me to make! I don't know if I have the patience you do.

Wow, congratulations on finishing your 300th quilt. I just crossed over making 200 myself and most of those have been made since 2008 which is fun to think about. :)

Oh wow! 300 quilts and you're still going strong with those scraps! I love this quilt ... I was about to give my scraps away ... thing I might keep them a bit longer and make one of these first :)

I just posted #73 on today's link up. I started in 2013. I haven't written a blog post of every one, but I'm trying to catch up a little. I do have photos of each on FB. It's fun to see how my skill has improved as I go along. https://www.facebook.com/jendejong/media_set?set=a.10153165048521176.1073741925.697511175&type=3

This is a wonderful scrap quilt. And I love the name you gave it. All I can think of is "I'm going off the rails on a crazy train..."

Love it, Love it, Love it. Question: What were the rail dimensions on Rebecca's quilt?

stitchinpenny said...

I keep an excel spreadsheet with the name / or recipient's name, the size, and where a picture is located. I also have a Shutterfly share site with all the pictures of my quilts. I don't keep up with pattern names or fabric lines, but if I were a real quilter, I probably would.

I just finished a Rail Fence quilt, but I'm dying to do a scrappy quilt like yours! Congrats on Finish 300!! Wow :)

Wow - that's a lot of quilts and the latest one is amazing. Love that way to display it on the back of the door. I'm up to 115 since January 2014 and I'm so glad I keep a note of them all and sometimes where they've ended up - all over the world! Guess the motto for this year should be Carry on Quilting ... Thanks so much for hosting Finish it up Friday - it's a great place to see what everyone's up to and gives me a lovely gentle weekly goal!

This one is adorable! I love the small size of the blocks, and so many different prints! Perfect with that solid backing, and of course, using Good Neighbors. I still like that fabric line. You continue to make beautiful quilts. Thanks very much for sharing!
