a new bedroom floor

Welcome to finish it up Friday!
I'm over the moon excited about this finish. You guys! Over the last week and a half, I installed a new laminate floor in my bedroom! With my own two hands! And with the help of power tools, of course! Ha!
I have never laid a laminate floor before, but last Tuesday, while I was hand binding a quilt (of course, right?) I watched a handful of you tube videos and worked up the courage to give it a shot. My husband was very impressed and encouraged me to keep going. That made all the difference in the world! Last night, with my kids and husband cheering me on, I laid the final piece. They are the best! My husband is thrilled that there is one thing less on his massive to do list! I'm thrilled to be one step closer to moving back into my room.  :)
This room has been a work in progress for a long time! Last January, we bought paint for the walls. Throughout the spring I worked on painting the trim white. On Memorial Day weekend, we moved our bedroom (temporarily, ahem) downstairs. In October, I painted the walls. In December we ripped out the carpet and bought the flooring. Nothing is ever quick! We still have a ways to go to completely finish the room (trim, curtains, doors, hardware etc.), but we are finally getting there! The floor being finished is a HUGE piece of the puzzle.
A few specifics:

The flooring is glueless laminate in Distressed Brown Hickory from the Home Depot.

The wall color is my own special concoction. (Figures, doesn't it?) I had a lovely gray color custom mixed, then decided it was too dark, so I mixed in a gallon of white paint. My husband was sweating bullets, but I think it worked out perfectly in the end! So, no specifics on that, I'm sorry to say.

If you haven't entered the Liberty giveaway, there is still time! I plan to pick a winner tomorrow.

Ok. That's it for me this week! Now it's your turn. Please link up your finishes! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

You constantly amaze me - do you have much background with power tools ? was it difficult ? I would like to do this too - I live in a very old farm house that really needs some help but my husband is always busy with the farm.

Your floor looks great! And not that much of a departure from quilting. Just a different medium, lol! Kudos to you for taking it on and getting the job done.

Oh my gosh, that is fabulous! I often browse that Anna White site that does all the pottery barn knock offs and wish I had skills as my husband does not have the time or interest for all my crazy ideas! Enjoy your accomplishment and good luck with the rest of your project!

I'm impressed! it is amazing what we can do when we set our minds to it - my daughter just finished the downstairs of her house with close to the same kind of flooring.

We put in a laminate floor in our home a few years ago. I was amazed at how well and how quick it went in.

You did a great job and it looks absolutely lovely!

What a beautiful floor! I can't believe you installed it yourself. I'm sure you heard all about laminate before you bought, but we bought ours about 8 years ago and it still looks brand new, after a good mopping of course:) We have a child and too many pets - carpets would have been ruined in a month. I'm very happy with my floors and I'm sure you will be too.

Wow, great job on the floor and congrats, it's beautiful! I created my bedroom wall color just as you did, kept adding white until the pale topaz was the precise shade I wanted. I hope your room is finished...a lot of work but so worth it in the end :)

Woooow, that's so impressive! :)

That has to be the prettiest laminate floor I've seen. Go Home Depot! If I had done all that squatting and bending, I would be done in. :)

Isn't youtube the best resource for learning how to do things. Your floor turned out beautiful!! And you not only accomplished that by yourself but you also showed your children that a person can do so many more things for themselves than they might at first think. So give yourself a pat on the back for being a great mother/role model too!

Lyndsey said...

I'm really impressed with your floor. I want to lay a floor in the bedroom that will become the guest / sewing room. My husband and son are moaning about me adding jobs to the very long list so i think I'll follow your example and learn the method from YouTube to do it myself.

Wow. Just wow. I do have to say that these home projects are very similar to quilting. (so I learned last year while tiling a kitchen back splash). cutting up squares and putting them back together again. How fun for you!! your floor looks beautiful.

OMG!! I am TOTALLY impressed. I wish I had the nerve to try it!

Fantastic! The floor looks great.

That's fantastic! I used to do more DIY but I get so nervous now that I will mess it up that we end up paying (a lot) for someone else to do it. Little toddler person puts the brakes on things, too, of course.

I believe that this wins the finish of the week award. Congratulations, it looks wonderful.

Great job on the floor. I have done a couple of rooms of this. Not too bad once you take the first step and get started, right? Looks great!

Lisa said...

Your floor is lovely - the floor colour with the beautiful grey wall colour is divine. So restful and classic. Enjoy!

Angela Atkins said...

It looks great! Would that type of flooring work in a kitchen, or would the potential water damage it? We have wood floors most everywhere else so adding a laminate may look weird, but it does seem more forgiving (and maybe less prep?)than ceramic.

Quilts and Such said...

Congratulations on your new floor! I would love to do that but am afraid to tackle the project. I am sure your husband thinks it's really cool that you did the floor yourself. Great finish for 2015!

Laying your own floor, that's impressive! We have been slowly remodeling our home. We found it's so much more satisfying to do it ourselves then just hiring it out. Hope the rest of the remodel goes just as good! and quickly!

I am totally impressed with this Amandajean! You're amazing. I totally drag my feet when it comes to even starting house projects. We finally bit the bullet to redo our kitchen/family room and We've been working it since before Halloween, so I totally get how it drags on! lol. But I'm starting to see the real progress and the house is slowly getting put back together and it has been SO worth it! I feel like a real grown-up now. :)
