oh clementine pillow

Guess what? I made another pillow! Aren't you shocked?
I started with an oh clementine charm pack from the lovely Alison of Cluck Cluck Sew. Then, I added a healthy dose of scraps from overflowing bins to round things out. (I'm nothing if not predictable, right?) I love the color and fabric combination that I ended up using. I plan to use this as a teaching tool at my upcoming "Make Good Choices" workshop at Modern Textiles on Saturday. See, I HAD to make it! The pillow cover measures about 20" square or so. AND...it's scrap project #89/101.

Last night as I was trying to fall asleep I started thinking of 10 reasons why I love to make pillows:
1. They are small, so they are a nearly instant gratification project....easy to finish in a day or even in a long afternoon of sewing.

2. They are a good way to play with a fabric line (or fabrics scraps) that you may have, but in a limited amount.

3. They are a good way to play with a technique that is new to you. (I tried a slightly different technique for making half square triangles and I liked it a lot!)

4. They use up scraps of batting. (Who doesn't have plenty of those laying around?)

5. They make good gifts (if you are able to part with them).

6. They are a quick way to freshen up/change up a room.

7. They are good for napping, obviously! (Oh, a nap....now that's a great idea.)

8. The pillow cover itself is much more compact to store than a quilt. (We know that in some households that could be a problem.)

9. The more you make, the better they look as a collection. (Who needs to sit on the couch anyway?)

and my favorite reason of all....

10. It's fun to watch my husband to launch them off the bed every night. (For some reason he doesn't see the need for 13 pillows on the bed?)

Disclaimers:
This is not my entire throw pillow collection, although it is a large part of it.
They are normally scattered around the house, I just rounded these up for the photo.
My husband doesn't launch pillows off the bed EVERY night, but there is a lot of muttering about why one would need to have so many pillows on the bed.
(We literally have 10 bed size pillows on our bed at this time.)
I MAY have a pillow problem and apparently it's not exclusive to throw pillows.
I don't plan on seeking help for this problem any time soon.
My husband has come to accept it.
For that I am very thankful.

Loved your disclaimer! And seeing all the different pillows all lines up. One thing about having a pillow problem is that you never have a last minute gift problem!

Love this post! We have about 7 full size pillows on the bed... ;)

There is a pillow problem at our house too! Our bed has eight at the moment. The family room has at least ten. You are always such an inspiration. Thanks!

Granny Maud's Girl said...

Yes to all of those reasons!
I think I also love making them just for the reaction from my husband: 'Another %^&* cushion!?'

Tracy said...

Just love looking at them! My husband feels the same way 😉

Unknown said...

OMG- I have 8 bed sized pillows on right now. hahahahahahah - my husband has the same reaction. Muttering about the need for all of these pillows....as they fly off the bed. I think a bed looks naked without a herd of pillows.

They look lovely all lined up there. Mine are stored in discrete locations in the lounge, because two teenage sons just fire them off the sofa every time the want to sit or lie down. I keep the best ones beside my chair for my personal use, and put a few of the lower priority ones on the sofa.

This post just made me giggle! My husband would do the same thing. I love all your pillows and you have inspired me to try again. I have only made a few because whenever I put the pillow in the back of the pillow puffs out. I just cannot seem to get that back right. But I will try again! Thanks for a fun post.

Your list of 10 reasons why you love to make pillows is HILARIOUS! And the disclaimers had me laughing so hard my family came to see if I was okay. I'm so glad that you have lots of pillows; it's always great to have an example of someone who has more pillows than me to show my family. So I can make more of course! I can't believe you are already at number 89 of your scrap projects. You should just make 12 more pillows!

Love all of your pillows. For all of your reasons I too have gone on a pillow kick. When I make a quilt for someone now, I include a pillow with the scraps.

I have fabric my daughter picked out for couch pillows, and I have been putting off making them for her, mostly because I can't decide on the right pattern. After seeing all of yours, I don't think there is a 'right' pattern. I will just pick one or three and run with it! (Love your list of disclaimers, btw!)

Seeing 'some' of your pillows lined up by the couch is beautiful! I never thought of making a bed sized pillow cover but now that you mention it, I'll have to try.

Your disclaimers are hilarious!

A few years ago before I retired I designed and made pillows for shops in California, Vancouver etc during the "shabby chic" phase of decorating. While I still supply pillows for a couple of shops more in the Annie Sloan chalk paint cottage decor look - my house is also filled with pillows. I love making them and they proved to be a very good little earner while putting my daughter through University. So I say.....pillow away - besides it is a great way to give rooms in your home a new look for every season and celebration! Why not!

Thanks for the look at some of your beauties.

You are so funny. I love your pillows and anytime your husband wants to toss one my way I will be ready to catch it. LOL

Question: What size do you make your pillow covers for a 20" pillow? I made one 20 exactly (to account for flattening once it was used) and it flattened out way too much! So I went back months later and made it quite a bit smaller with a zipper closure. So now it's about 17".

Have you had this flattening problem? Maybe it's my inserts?? Any info you can give would be appreciated!

And I LOVE this color combo...bravo!

Besides how beautiful your pillow are I love how plump they are! Thanks for some great ideas today and a chuckle!

I agree wholeheartedly with all 10 of your reasons to make pillows... sometimes you just need a quick little project to sew on, not an epic WiP that goes on for months. That said, I don't have any on our bed... I know my husband would more than mutter occasionally if they piled up! :)

You are my pillow inspiration! I've been collecting various fabrics just to start a pillow collection like yours! I have a question for you though. Your bed currently has 10 bed pillows, do they just have pillowcases or are they "adorned" like the ones on your couch?

Unknown said...

I just love Oh Clementine!! Then saw your couch..they're all so pretty! I need to make lots more pillows, I'd love to make a bunch of pillows all different sizes and make a reading nook for my Grandbabies.
Love your disclaimers! Your sense of humor always makes me laugh! Have a WONDERFUL day!!
