scrappy Sunday-giveaway day!

Welcome to scrappy Sunday! Because it's a holiday in Canada and it's a holiday later this week in the US, (plus my birthday in a few days!) Cheryl and I decided that it would be a great time have a giveaway!

Up for grabs today....
A copy of our book, signed by both Cheryl and myself, to be sent to someone in the US.

A digital copy of our book to be sent to someone outside of the US.
A scrap pack of various solids in cool colors.
A scrap pack of strings.
A scrap pack of ticker tape pieces. (My favorite!)
And a scrap pack of green fabric...perfect for making slabs.
In your comment, I'd love to hear where you live and your thoughts on scraps. What do you love about working with scraps? Or....What do you find challenging about working with scraps? Or you could answer both! Winners will be chosen on Thursday, July 5th.

Be sure to check out Cheryl's post and enter her giveaway, too!

I don't have a lot of scraps yet as have not had much time to sew in the last twenty years, but now that the children are grown and left home I am accumulating more scraps. I am always looking at patterns I could use for scraps.

I'm in Nashville and I've always been intimidated by scraps and making everything even. I have strip quilted before, but never done a scrap quilt. I ordered your book from Amazon, but it is currently 1-3 months backordered, so congratulations!

I am currently living in Kodiak, Alaska and at the moment I don't have a lot of scraps. I haven't been quilting that long and I'm fairly slow at getting things done so I haven't accumulated very many. I do love all the scrappy quilts that people have been putting together recently and would love to be able to do one someday to remember all the other projects I've done.

Ahh You always give us lots to think about! I love scraps because it is amazing what can be made with what is leftover. And to think I used to throw those pieces out in the beginning....
It is hard because I really am a matchy, matchy girl....it pushes me out of my box...but I always love the results!

I've been dreaming of scraps and dreaming of getting my copy of your book (asked for it for my birthday but your birthday sounds like a great time to win one instead!)
I have so many scraps, it's good to clip smaller ones into project size pieces! but the challenge is finding the time to get them sorted and stay up with it! I live in sunny SoCal! Come visit, do a books signing (our little fabric shop has your book I squealed with delight and got all the ladies working there looking at it...most of them don't follow blogs!

I don't really like scraps... but I don't quilt! I don't like trying to store and organize them. I usually try and use them up after finishing my projects or put them in a *scrap box* for my sisters to use :) I'm from Oklahoma. Thanks for the giveaway!

I am in Oklahoma City, OK, USA, and I tend to be overly matchy-matchy. Pulling scraps out of a bag and just using them pulls me from my comfort zone- often with spectacular results! Thanks for the giveaway.

I live in southern Indiana. I love the look of scrappy quilts, but I think it is really hard to put together scraps so that nothing clashes, but wihtout over-planning or over-coordinating the fabric! I think I just need to learn how to let go more and trust in how something will look once it's all put together.

Brooke @ little b quilts said...

I love the idea of a scrappy quilt (with small scraps) I just don't have the space to store many and I don't seem to have enough yet to really do anything with anyway. Additional scraps seem to be necessary ;-)

Scraps r wonderful!! I love to cut them into strips. If its wide enough, I cut a 2 inch piece, and whatever, if anything is left I make a even # width from that. Strips. An be used for so much! And I love them :)

I'm in South Central WA. I've been sewing for about (gulp) 52 years but just started quilting. Somewhat of a scrap hoarder, my Mom keeps running into little fabric stashes of mine at home and I haven't lived there in almost 40 years! I have a quilt that my parents had made for me ( neighbors Mom sewed and quilted for them) as my high school graduation present made from the scraps of all the fabric I sewed for clothes in high school. Still have it of course!

I live in Eathampton MA. I actually never used to do scrap quilts until it was pointed out that that fabric cost just as much as yardage. That was the start of my scrap quilt craziness. Never looked back. Love scrappies. Susan

I live in Dallas and I am not a scrap lover :)
What I do not like about scraps is that I can not match them together neatly, or maybe this is how it seems to me.

I live in Germany and I have one scraps box that is too small. I think it would be challenging to work with someone's scraps. It's also challenging as I often don't have as much scraps from one fabric as I desire. But I don't throw away too many scraps. It became better in the past 'though. :) Working from scraps or used things is also satisfying as I think it's what quilting is all about. I like the fabric from today very much 'though.

Happy birthday! I live in the wonderfully green Pacific Northwest on the less populated, quieter west side of the Puget Sound. I love it here but at this point, I think it is necessary to visit warmer climes at least once a year to get my sunshine fix. Thank goodness July and August are upon us!

I love scraps for the idea of scraps. I have yet to use them but I still feel like I am in the building up my stash of scraps phase. I selfishly hoard them and have to overcome some of that to allow my 7yo daughter to use some for her projects. I love the ideas, especially the ticker tape quilt which is on my To Do list, as well as how beautifully random scraps can come together in one seamless creation.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I love the look of scrappy quilts, I think I prefer them, actually...but my use of scraps is limited, as I'm just getting started in the quilting world...or at least the patchwork world. My first, and so far only, quilt was a hand embroidered pre-stamped number...can't wait to start patchwork, I think I'm going to attempt your round and round quilt along quilt soon! And hope I don't go crazy from all those seams! :)

What a generous giveaway! I love working with scraps. It started with an annual online scraps to treasure challenge - over 100 six inch squares. Then, as I've made more quilts over the years, I've enjoyed the challenge of making something special out of my scraps. I love remembering the original quilt I've given to a friend and those happy memories of blessing a friend. All those get stirred up again when I use those scraps!

I tend to do crazy blocks, and before I'd ever seen your blog, was doing a form of slab quilts as well. My crazy blocks tend to be 9.5 in. squares with borders.
Your blog is an inspiration! Also, thanks to you, I just did my first all-machine done binding -- love this technique! Thank you!!!

Scraps? Well, I'm just starting quilting so I haven't used many scraps yet. However, I am using the scraps from the backing of my first quilt to not only make a growth chart for my son but am also incorporating a small square of the fabric into as many of the quilts that I make...i.e. every quilt I make will have a small square of that fabric until it's all done...kind of a signature.

Hi Amanda! We live in a ski resort area in Idaho, so I have lots of time in the winter to sew to my heart's content! Summer is filled with so many activities that it's harder to stay inside to sew, except when it gets very hot. The best thing about scraps is that they bring to mind all the neat projects I have made over the years. In fact, I started quilting because my grandmother made a scrap quilt from leftover pieces from all the clothes she used to make us as we were growing up. I live in Boise, Idaho and what I absolutely love about scraps is that when I am working with them I am reminded of what project they were origionally used for and who the project went to. I am also really loving that now my girls will even point out which quilt it is from. I would be so excited to get to play with your scraps and have a signed copy of your book!

I moved to Connecticut two weeks ago!! Still need to set up my sewing space :0) !!! I am learning to love scraps, the challenge is knowing what size is too small to keep (unless it is one of those many favorite lines, then too small never counts, hahaha)

Robin (RsIslandCrafts) said...

I think the hardest thing with scraps is storage. Right now I am working on a wedding ring style quilt and using up a bunch of my scraps. Odd shapes and sizes make it a bit harder and definitely takes more time than using fat quarters or yardage.

I love scraps of fabrics and always have. I have been a sewer since my early teens and now that I am quilting, scraps add a new demension to my quilting and projects. I love the color and the mix of different fabrics and creating something from nothing useing them.. in my earlier years scraps were used to emblelish clothing or toys, dolls I made for my kids. Your book has given definition to those scraps.

I'm in North Carolina & LOVE scrap quilts through most I make are from fabric lines/collections. I keep the scraps & am trying to develop the most efficient sorting/storage system for me. I'm always looking for ways to use my scraps. While I consider myself a traditional quilter, I've been researching "modern quilting" lately & realize this style may be the best for me to explore for my scraps. Your book is on
my amazon wish list but a signed copy would be a treat!! And scraps too---WOW!! Thanks for such a generous offer

Hi Amanda Jean,
I'm a new quilter so still working on building up my scrap stash... what I love about them is the satisfaction of using up every last bit of something, and also they are perfect for a commitment-phobe like me: I'm afraid to cut into (and ruin?) big new pieces of fabric so scraps take the fear out of piecing.

I live in New York City, and I really like scrappy quilts and projects the best! My problem with scraps is that I don't have enough -- I end up buying fat quarters and cutting them up to add to my scrap collection. The first quilt I ever made was a scrappy string quilt, mostly made with cut up fat quarter "scraps."

I never would have thought about scraps until your blog. You are amazing with them. You've helped me see that every piece of fabric deserves to be in a quilt in some way, shape or form. I've only been quilting 2 years, so my scraps are small in number, but I've used what I've had to make doll quilts for my nieces.
