It's very interesting to me how a larger piece has a definite pattern but the small scraps "lose" their identity and so they can be used for something completely different than what you used it for before.
I'm in Michigan and I don't have nearly enough scraps! I have a hard time knowing what is worth keeping and what needs to be tossed. After following your blog, I'm sure I'm tossing way to many!
I live in Minnesota. Honestly, scraps stress me out. Even though I do save them and use them, its the compilation of piles of scraps in my craft area that gives me anxiety. Heaps and heaps of them, and they are never organized in any way. Huh, whose fault it that, I wonder? :)
I live in Greeneville, TN, home of 17th president of the US. I like to use scraps. Most of my quilts are made from scraps. Working with scraps are cheaper than having to buy all the fabric for a quilt, saves you money!

I'm here in Texas, a bit south of Ft Worth.
I keep some scraps, but not all. If its big enough to be put back on my comic book boards or fold like a FQ I'll keep it. Or if it's a good size string I'll throw it in the string box. Cut off parts from hst or anything less than 3 or 4 in isn't worth it, unless it's a really big omg I loooove this fabric.
My scraps are kept in mason jars by color. Looks so nice!
I'm from sw Idaho and a fairly new quilter so I haven't done anything with scraps and just beginning my scrap pile. Your book looks amazing!
My daughter usually swipes all my scraps. I do need to keep and sort them - that's my biggest challenge - the sorting.
I live in Eastern Washington and what do I love about scraps? I'm not sure yet. I'm still building up my supply. Hopefully I'll win some and can learn what I love about scraps!

I love scraps! Variety adds such depth and visual interest to my quilts now - much more beautiful than my early quilts! It's also awesome to make something beautiful out of a bunch of old scraps and pieces, especially when some of them are kinda ugly!

I live in Farmington UT but am moving to West Point UT in just a few weeks! We just finished redoing it so that we can move in! I love scraps and have so many plans to make things while I am out of school for the summer. I love scraps because they bring so much character to things, and I am a lot like my Grandma and hate to waste perfectly good fabric just because it was the "Scraps"!
I am Chris from Los Alamos, NM. Using scraps makes ma feel virtuous: making something useful or beautiful with what is at hand makes me feel like a pioneer woman, providing for her family! :-) The toughest part with scraps is to tie it all together somehow so the colors and textures don't compete with each other too much.

I love scraps as it is usually a look into other quilts and projects that I've done. There are some scraps that I hoard and have yet to cut again as the items mean so much to me and giving up that bit of scrap would be really sad. So I love it as sometimes you're recycling a memory to continue on.
I live in Florida, just a bit north of Tampa. I like using scraps because it seems like free fabric. If I cut into yardage or a FQ, I think of it as spending money on fabric, even if I pull it from stash. If it comes out of the scrap box, in my mind it was free. The bad thing is that I have a good system to store FQs, large scraps, and yardage, but with the scraps, I just toss them into a bin,and then I have to root through it to find what I want. If the big gets too full, I start another. There has to be a better way! Maybe sorting by color should be my next step.
I live in the St. Louis area. I love scraps...love making doll quilts or scrappy baby quilts. My favorite part of making something new is adding to my scrap bucket :)

Scraps kind of frustrate me because I don't have enough of the right size or color. I also like to be "done" with a project and that includes the fabric that goes with it. I'm in Oregon in the Columbia River Gorge not far from Multnomah Falls.

What an awesome giveaway - Thanks!! I love scraps and scrappy quilts! IF I get tired of my scraps, I just cut up some new fabric. :) I love looking at a scrappy quilt and seeing other quilts I've done. I'm always sad when the scraps from a favorite quilt are all gone.

I live in Grizzly Flats,CA. The nearest large city is Sacramento. I love to make scrap quilts, I have made dozens of postage stamp quilts and my newest addiction is string quilts, I love and enjoy the bright bursts of color when using scraps. The possibilities are endless...and the fun never ends!

Oh scraps, how I love them, and dislike them all at the same time.
I love that when I need just a tiny bit, I don't have to cut into yardage for it, but I produce so many more scraps than I use, and they pile up.
I'm currently out of room in several of my colored scrap bins. I guess I just need to spend some time doing some scrappy projects, and if I were the winner of your book, I could use them up AND have another book to create from for them Craft Book Challenge I host each month!
I live in Central New York, and I love the idea of scraps--I just have relatively few, since I'm pretty new to this! I've started cutting out a 4.5" square of every fabric I work with, and I hope to someday make a big ol' patchwork quilt of just squares! I like the potential history of it too, remembering what I used the fabrics for initially!
I pull out my scrap bags when I have extra girls in the house that want to do a quick sewing project! It is usually pincushions!
Scrap quits are my favorite because I hate throwing anything away.

I sew everything with scraps. Most recently, I made baby pants for my new little guy from my husband's old shirt sleeves. I used the rest of the shirt for a Boppy cover. The worst thing about scraps is LINING UP STRIPES...uggggghhhh! And beautiful fabric cuttings that are way too small or don't match anything. It makes me so sad to have beautiful fabric and no be able to use it. I live in Vermont.

What I love about working with scraps is the feeling that I got something for nothing. My scrap basket is mostly full of things I might once have thrown away, so to make something entirely of scraps gives me this huge feeling of achievement. It's great!
I love scraps...my favorite quilts are scrappy ones! They do take a bit of time to organize and also to decide what to use, and how to use them but so fun!

Happy Birthday! I live in Connecticut near the water, it's so beautiful here and I'm lucky to be able to go to the beach whenever I like. I love scraps! In fact, I find it hard to throw out even the smallest of pieces. I go to my scraps before I will cut into my stash. It's kind of crazy. I love string quilts too, the are great scrap busters.

I love working with scraps. I'm always making paper pieced blocks for certain projects and I always dive into my scrap stash rather than pulling out some prints.
I sort them into shape and size, so depending what I'm making I have the right size scraps at hand =D
I live in northern California and feel very blessed that we're not having a heatwave like the rest of the country! I love scraps, because they make quilts more interesting. It's challenging though, because I can't strip piece!

Woo! I'm on the west coast of Canada on Vancouver Island, where we keep hearing rumors of summer but haven't experienced it yet. I love scraps! Most of my quilts are scrappy and I'm always digging in my scrap bins. I actually don't throw any fabric or batting out. Even the tiniest pieces are used for stuffing. Makes me feel a little better about my hobby and balancing it with trying to live an environmentally aware life.
I like to remember that scraps are almost the entire point of quilts. Right? Saving bits and pieces of fabric from used up clothes, or flour sacks and figuring out how to make them useful and beautiful - Quilts! I try to use scraps in every quilt I make. Right now I'm making myself a quilt and using bits from a vintage dress I wore on my first date with my husband. (we live in New Orleans by the way!)
I live in Germany and I LOVE scraps. Since I don't have easy access to stores unless I go online and WAIT for shipping, I use every piece I can. The only reason to dislike scraps is not having enough of the fabric you absolutely adore and wish you just had ONE little last piece to add :)

It is the traditional meaning of patchwork with the make, do and mend mentality. It is the frugal nature of survival with a creative edge, and the ability to see beauty in the small things in life. It is the challenge and the desire to use every last bit of the wonderful fabrics available to us today. It is a reflection of my nature and personality and I LOVE that I can make beautiful things with all these little bits ... I live in the land down under . . .

I'm from Northern Utah, and I love make little blankets with scraps. i have such a hard time throwing fabric away unless I'm sure I'll never use it again. Barbie clothes are fun to use scraps for too.

As for working with scraps, I like to challenge myself by just randomly selecting the top of the pile and making it work. Does a real number on the control freak side of my mind, but the results are normally just what I wanted!

WOW! What a generous giveaway! I currently live in the Chicago suburbs and can't seem to be able to part with scrappy bits either. I was thrilled to find your website for inspiration to use some of the scraps I've accumulated. My daughters and nieces have all received ticker tape quilts for their dolls (such a brilliant idea!). I also enjoy repurposing cotton from clothing and have made some fabulously lovely family quilts from hubby's dress shirts once they've gotten torn (he somehow manages to keep putting holes in the elbows, but I secretly don't mind b/c wrapping up in a quilt made out of them is even better than wearing them myself!) :) Perhaps the best thing about breaking out the scraps is that I don't mind my daughter joining in on the fun and she likes getting all creative with me because the possibilities are endless and I don't say no (such as when she wants me to cut into a coveted yardage...)

I live in western Indiana, and I honestly find scraps challenging. I guess my problem is not knowing how to deal with all the little pieces, especially when they are odd shapes.

I live in central Kentucky and I love scraps. I think of my Mother who made scrap quilts when I was growing up and scraps just make my heart sing. My best quilts are scrappy and not all color coordinated. The only thing challenging is that I don't want to use them. :)

I live in the other Washington--PNW(Pacific Northwest)where we still have quilts on our beds. I think we're one of the few places in the U.S. that is not sweltering in heat/humidity. Looks like summer will be coming after the 4th--often when it does turn nice! I've been organizing my scraps by color--love the pic of the green scraps--my new favorite color. So hope to use some scraps this summer to make a summery quilt w/lots of white. Have a GREAT birthday! ! !

I live in Lexington, MN. It's a smaller town and is about 15 minutes north of Minneapolis! Scraps are great because you can sew all of them together and make something bigger with them. I like scraps because they make a quilt so much more interesting than just a few fabrics, but it does take a lot longer to make the quilt.

I'm from Colorado Springs (go firefighters!). I love scraps! The last quilt I made was entirely made out of scraps, except for the binding. I got a little lazy about that and bought some fabric. :)
Scraps are fun! Quilters tend to work in scraps anyway (fat quarter, anyone?), but I've found that my idea of scraps are a lot smaller than other peoples! I tend to hoard even the smallest scraps.
I live in Spokane Washington! I love scraps and it pains me to toss any of them out. When my girls were young many of my best projects were using scraps.Scraps invite creativity and that is one of the best traits we can have. Now that I am getting into quilting in addition to fashion sewing, I find that scraps I have saved from the clothing I made my girls growing up can be turned into wonderful memories. Now to organize them...

Scraps: I use them in every single quilt I ever had because thats all I have are pieces of fabric, I never have yardage. Currently I am dreaming up an EPP project and you guessed it, it calls for scraps! Would really like to win these to help with the EPP quilt.

I've been making lots of scrappy blocks, sometimes they are add as you go type begun like a log cabin block where I use loads of color. Other times, I make 16 patch blocks (finished individual square is 2"). Love scrappiness.

What I find challenging is that I don't seem to have enough of one color family or style. I have a hard time just throwing everything together even though I know it works, as evidenced by all the scrappy quilts I've seen.

I think the greatest thing about scraps is those pieces that you wouldn't naturally put together turn out so beautifully in a scrappy enrivonment.
Love all those greens--just like it is here in MN.
I love working with scraps, because it often mean using the whole spectrum of colours and lights through to darks.
I keep even the smallest scraps, because I like to appliqué, and even tiny pieces come in handy. I keep my scraps separated by colour, unless they are strings which I keep in a bag for string piecing

I have always loved scraps. Perhaps it's the challenge of making something from leftovers or castaways. Scraps from others are even more appealing than my own. It's like having new fabric. Green is my favorite color.
From North Carolina, I like the scrappy look in my quilts. It reminds me of my Grandma's quilts from my childhood.

Ahh!!!! We live in beautiful Charleston, SC. I don't really have many thoughts on working with scraps because I haven't been sewing long enough to accumulate enough!! So, it seems like I would be the perfect recipient of all those lucious, lovely scraps! Hi, I'm lisa and I live in Philly. Unless the scrap is about the size of a charm or bigger, I don't like working with them. They are too hard to maintain control over. I feel like they're working with me instead of me working with them.

I live in South Central Texas out in the country. I adore scraps and think they should be in everyone's sewing stash. With my scraps (I bought mine since I am still sort of a newbie and didn't have any) I made my dear friend a very neat fall-ish table runner! I intend to use scraps more and more. They remind me of simpler times, like Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote about in her books. They used old sheets, clothes, and other scraps to make curtains and tablecloths. I like the idea of making do with what you have on hand. Have a blessed and Happy Birthday!!!
I love scrap quilts, but you need a large variety to make it interesting.
I live in Louisiana. I prefer to work with scraps. I'm not very good at choosing colors for a planned quilt and scrappy quilts give me the freedom to just pull fabrics and go with it.
Thanks to reading your blog, I started saving my scraps. Yes, I used to just throw them away! Don't shoot me! I love being able to mix and match so I am really wanting to do a ticker tape quilt...think I will start small though with a doll's quilt. I live in Blaine, MN. I love scraps because I'm really frugal, and love using every last bit of fabric. I don't usually make quilts with just a few colors, or fabrics, so even when I use a pattern, I usually like the more scrappy look. When using actual scraps, I find it challenging to go ahead and USE the scraps. What if I find another project later that would be perfect for that piece of fabric?

I live in California. I love other people's scraps to add to mine. The thing I still don't get is how they keep multiplying even when you make a scrap quilt with them. I like making scrappy backings and trying to use the scraps all up. I always seem to find that I am short a particular color family. The scraps you showed look totally different than anything I have. I love scraps amd books! I am from Salt Lake, Utah and the hardest time I have i trying to get them coordinate! I think I am overthinking it.
I love scraps because they seem to give a hint of a bigger story. What happened to the rest of the fabric it was attached to? What kind of projects were created? It is a reunion - a scrapbook - momentos from friends and fellow quilters. Each piece came from somewhere and is now a part of something else. I think that is very poetic.
Ooh all of those scraps sound marvelous! i live in Wisconsin. I never thought I could do anything with a small piece of fabric, so I always threw them away (gasp!). Then I went to your quilt retreat and saw all of the neat things you do with teeny, tiny pieces, so I've now started my own little bin. It's very small, but I gotta start somewhere! :)
I am a newbie to sewing and so Idon't really have much scraps to speak of and really haven't tried using them. But your book looks amazing. It might inspire me to make something neat.

I love scrap quilts! I haven't been quilting very long so I was thrilled when 2 people in my guild each gave me a big bag of scraps. I have started organizing them by color and have started a lego quilt. I have also used some of the scraps in a couple of other small projects.
I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I find scraps difficult because I don't generate a huge amount of them, so when I need a few it can get tricky - unless I only need small bits for wonky stars or something. I need to generate more scraps so I can make quilts from them!

So many times you just need little bits of fabric & it's such a shame to cut it out of a new big piece. Plus, it's fun to patch them together!

I just finished a baby-size version of your High Five quilt (I think that's it's name). I love, love, love being able to use all those small scraps to make something beautiful, bright, and fun. My goal is to make a quilt using a fabric only once in the quilt. I have to collect some more scraps before I can do that!

Hi! I live in Pennsylvania and I. LOVE. SCRAPS! Besides the fact that I love the LOOK of scrappy quilts, as someone quilting on a VERY tight budget I find scrap quilting the most economical route to funding my new found passion. The $2.99 fabric bundles at the local thrift shop would never hold enough of any one material to make a more "planned" quilt, but they give me plenty of scrap size material to craft my next project. Plus, those quilters who are not enamored with scrap quilts are often quite willing to divest themselves of "tiny pieces of material too small to use"...hence I frequently receive scraps in response to Freecycle requests. I also LOVE utilitarian quilts...which in times past were always crafted with the tiny pieces of material left from sewing necessities, or the unworn portions of no longer useful items. Frugal no matter which way you look at scrap quilts!

I'm in Michigan right now, though I originally come from Texas. I am loving scraps right now because it is the first time I have purposefully set out to HAVE scraps. I happened to pick a paper-pieced quilt for my sister that uses lots of scraps and discovered that I didn't have any! So I set about adding an extra 1/4 yard to all of my projects so I could collect scraps and I've hunted at garage sales. So far so good! :)

I love working with scraps - in fact I tend to work with scraps more than whole cloth, but you have to work with whole cloth sometimes in order to get the scraps! I like to use lots of scraps as it draws the eye around the quilt and makes it more interesting and dimensional. Plus, I like to play with the scraps to see how and where to use them -- excuse me "audition" the scraps. What is challenging is having enough of the right sized scraps in similar colors in order to make a planned quilt. As a relatively new quilter, I have to raid my mother's oldie scraps (true scraps from making clothes, not stash). Thanks for celebrating with readers (and happy birthday too). from Florida, USA.
I'm in Kaiapoi, in New Zealand. I love scraps, and value them even more since we moved out of the city and arn't as close to any fabric shops.

I am starting to get better about using scraps. I love using them because I have so many!
I live in British Columbia Canada. I love the look of a scrappy quilt but my scrap stash is still pretty small.
(I live in Colorado.) Mostly I LOVE LOVE working with scraps!!! It's easier to pick out the one thing that I DON'T love about them: Often, I can't get out of a certain color scheme. I use the pieces over and over and they get smaller and smaller and I have to buy more fabrics in that color to "finish" the quilts, and then they give me more scraps, and on and on!
I'm from Utah where we're enjoying the smoke from several wildfires this summer :( My biggest challenges with scraps are 1)I'm a relatively new quilter so I really haven't had a lot of them yet, and 2)I have the irrational worry that I might need it for something else or to go with something else. Those greens would sure look lovely in a tree quilt I'm making ;) Thanks for the chance.
I find using scraps a bit of a challenge, but I'm getting better at it!! I've also been saving selvedges, so maybe I'll make a scrappy selvedge quilt someday soon!
