scrappy Sunday-giveaway day!

Welcome to scrappy Sunday! Because it's a holiday in Canada and it's a holiday later this week in the US, (plus my birthday in a few days!) Cheryl and I decided that it would be a great time have a giveaway!

Up for grabs today....
A copy of our book, signed by both Cheryl and myself, to be sent to someone in the US.

A digital copy of our book to be sent to someone outside of the US.
A scrap pack of various solids in cool colors.
A scrap pack of strings.
A scrap pack of ticker tape pieces. (My favorite!)
And a scrap pack of green fabric...perfect for making slabs.
In your comment, I'd love to hear where you live and your thoughts on scraps. What do you love about working with scraps? Or....What do you find challenging about working with scraps? Or you could answer both! Winners will be chosen on Thursday, July 5th.

Be sure to check out Cheryl's post and enter her giveaway, too!

More scraps and a chance for a book? how lucky can one get? I use scraps for most of my quilts. My flip flop quilts are just that!

The desire for scrap fabric is a main reason I got into quilting in earnest. I don't like having to iron them. You know me...I live in Eagle, Idaho! :) Thanks Amandajean!

Fun giveaway and fun questions! I live in Victorville, the High Desert of California. I love to work with scraps because I feel like I am making a dent and using them up. Its a great feeling! The downside of working with scraps is, its very messy and usually the dent isn't very noticeable. Still scraps are treasures, beloved bits from others or reminders of previous precious projects. : )

I like scraps because with a good supply of them it is possible to find the perfect bit of fabric, especially for small applique projects. The difficulty is in organizing them-I've yet to be successful with that.

I definately find working with scraps challenging. I save and save them but get overwhelmed every time I even think about using them. There are so many!!! I want to take your advice in the book and sort them by color. Just need the time! Smiles~Beth (Greenwood, MO)

I think scrap quilts are my favourite. You can use the same pile of scraps and make two quilts that end up looking entirely different from each other, depending on the placement of the scrap pieces.

I am from North Central Ohio. I have a love hate relationship with scraps. If there is enough there "worthy" to keep I keep them or I will pass them on. But once it gets down to the nubs into the trash they go. I know it sounds wasteful to do that but I like a clean sewing area. Sadly scraps just get in the way sometimes.

I live in southeastern Wisconsin...a transplant from Illinois and grateful to live in such a wonderful community where my quilting life began.

Scraps are the lifeblood of my quilts and projects. I hesitate every time I have to cut into a new piece of fabric, yet love the freedom of scraps....old fabrics, recycled table cloths, cut up dresses and clothes, upholstery samples, etc. all provide comfort to create. I must have some of my grandmother's depression era genes!

I like to sew scraps but here it's very difficult to find fabrics, patchwork is not a popular activity in France :( with 4 friends of mine we made the challenge last year to copy an old quilt without buying fabrics, "la Crise", its was very difficult but funny too :)

I live in Quebec City, Canada. My favourite thing about scraps is keeping my stash low. I promised myself not to buy fabric unless I had a project when I started sewing. I've cheated a few times but scraps keep me on track and somewhat on budget. Plus, I experiment more with scraps. There isn't that fear of cutting into something nice without figuring all the math out first.

I am writing from Vancouver and love what I have seen of your books so far. Scrap quilts give me the opportunity to make something beautiful from ordinary scraps that normally would be tossed in the trash. I love to use scraps as much as I love buying new fabric! I'm working on my first string pieced blocks now, and used scraps to make a word quilt for my daughter's graduation (a la Tonya's Riccuci's Word Play Quilts. I also use them to do applique - sometimes a tiny piece is enough. My biggest challenge is organizing them. I like the idea of making bins for various sizes of strips/squares etc., but then what do I use for applique (large or small)?

I love the interest that using scraps creates. The more quilts I make, the more scrappy I want them. The challenge is finding colors, values and patterns that work in the pattern I want. Scraps aren't something I'm naturally drawn to but I have spent the last umpty flump spare hours cutting pretty much all of them into varying sizes, mostly derivatives of the 10 x 10 square! I'm stitching them into some sort of disappearing 9 patch quilt top in a completely random order, the only criteria being that there is no 2 fabrics the same in each block. I'm in the UK and would love the digi book!

I love to work with scraps, love scrappy projects, but I find that sometimes I get too matchy, rather than playing it random (reaching into a bag and using whatever I pull out in the order I reach for it). My little sewing group is currently doing a log cabin round robin. We were able to choose themes or colors in our fabrics but overall, they're scrappy. I love them all, but really struggle with not being too matchy~

I live in northern Indiana near the Michigan line. I love scraps! I was raised that you don't throw them away, and most of the quilts that I remember from my childhood were scrappy. I love them because they are so colorfu and when the shading/values are laid out right the whole becomes so much more than the small pieces.

I like working with scraps because I love revisiting all my favorite fabrics. I find it challenging to find enough of certain colors, also it takes a bit of time to use them, which I don't always have.

I love scraps, especially for improv work! I haven't done much of it, since I don't have all that many scraps to learn with.

One of the reasons I love scrappy quilts is that I can look at all the fabrics and remember the original quilts I used them for and for whom I made them. It's like a scrapbook of quilts I have made! Happy 4th of July!

I'm sorry if this is a duplicate, but I can't see my comment.

I love your blog. You are an amazing and talented quilt artist!
I love scraps and have them sorted by color in plastic shoe boxes. It is crazy.

Scraps scare me, because I have this crazy need to have everything look good, and be planned and match...

I need a plan to deal with scraps without a plan. :)

I love scraps and use them in almost all of my quilts. I love knowing that all the fabric is getting put to good use ... :)

I love to work with scraps, but I have a hard time FINISHING projects with scraps. I love making random scrappy quilt blocks, but they just pile up and never turn into quilts. Maybe someday I'll have enough for a scrappy quilt.

I'm a little neurotic when it comes to scraps. I can't seem to throw away even the tiny ones. I love it when colored bits come together in harmony!

I'm just getting used to working with scraps. I don't think I have enough yet for the selection process to be satisfying, but I am determined to working on it (both the scraps and making more scraps!) I'm in Portland OR.

I live near Boston, and I like working with scraps because it makes me feel thrifty. I also like to see how fabrics from past projects interact with each other.

Using someone else's scraps forces me to stretch and try something different -- and new scraps are irresistable -- you just have to use them!

I live in upstate New York, and what I love about scraps is that you put together a combination that is uniquely yours. Plus, scraps can remind you of all the other projects you've made with those fabrics, and, since I'm cheap, they're like using free leftovers! Hooray for scraps!

I am a beginner to quilting, I made my first one for my youngest son at Christmas as he was always trying to "borrow" his brothers baby quilt who had been made by an American friend when she was here.
At Church we are just getting involved with the Linus quilt and blanket charity, so know have another opportunity to make children's quilts.
As I cannot bear to throw away any scrap fabric from previous projects, I have a small but growing pile that I have no idea what to do with other than letting my boys play with them!
I recently saw the splash pattern from your book on another blog, and would love to make my own version of it.
I live with my family in the UK.

I'm Kimberly from Wyoming. I love scraps and rarely purchase anything over a quarter yard myself. I love the thought of taking the small pieces and putting them together and making them work. A quilt made with large pieces bought for that purpose can be beautiful, but I find for ME life is about using what you have, finding something that works or making it work, and not wasting the resources available already. We also kind of live that way. I see the enjoyment to be found in dedicated fabric quilts (I need 2yards of a light, half yard of cobalt, and I am going to follow this pattern exactly) - it's like a trip to Disneyland - fun, and the whole package is done ahead of time and thought and planned and so on. If I am making something specific for someone specific, I do enjoy this way of quilting. Scrap quilts-using what I have and supplementing where I need to - are like road trips or camping. Throw what we have in the car, pick a direction and we will wander down the road, and let's see where it takes us. That is much more my family's, and my, speed.

I love to make scrap quilts. I have buckets of scrap and I just start sewing them together until I have a piece of fabric the size of a 12 1/2 inch block then I square it up and I have a block to put into a quilt. If they are too small to use then they go in a bag and I donate them to the Humane Society and they use them to stuff beds for the dogs and cats.

"what you have on hand" and it always ends up beautiful! :)

I used to always sew for my pet rats, and would often use the small scraps I ended up with to make patchwork hammocks for them! :) The only thing I have trouble with when I work with scraps is that the flannel frays quite a bit if you want to leave unfinished edges. I love the idea of "free" quilts from my scraps. I know I paid for the fabric, but using every possible piece makes me feel frugal. I would say the challenge would be getting everything ready for cutting, although using Bonnie Hunter's Scrap User's System has been a huge help. I live in Nebraska and would be over the moon to win fabric!!! nellsheartstrings@yahoo.com

What a great giveaway! I'm going to subscribe in a sec. But to answer the question, I LOVE working with scraps. I started sewing about a year ago. My first fabric was 3 scrap bags I found at a thrift store. Since then I always go back and try to find more, but it seems that was a one time thing.

I love working with scraps. Truth be told, I am happiest working with hundreds of little pieces. They bring me joy. The only downside working with scraps is the preparation time. Sorting, ironing, cutting, trimming. But boy, oh boy, when that is done, I can go to town!!

I have been following your projects for quite a while now and would love to have your scraps. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

I'm Jeanette from Sydney, Australia. A scrap has to be pretty small (or pretty ugly) for me to put it in the bin. The appeal of using small scraps is that you can use MORE fabric in a project - just smaller pieces.

I live in Iowa and I find it difficult to decide on a storage system for scraps. I'm never quite sure what size to cut pieces down to, or if I should have it sorted by color instead! So, they are currently all mixed up in huge bins and I pick through it very ineffectively :)

I think scraps force you (or help you) to re-imagine ways to use a certain color or pattern. Scraps are all jumbled together & various sizes, so it's like the quilting-ideas part of my brain gets a "reset" button looking at scraps. As other new quilters have said, I often wish that I had more scraps and I'm so happy when someone wants to give away scraps. I live in rural IL, so a lot of the older generation quilts, but not too many younger people like me. I like to take the more "traditional" fabric scraps and re-invent them into something modern. I just asked the library to order your book, so I would LOVE my own copy! ~ Ellie M

I love scraps. Projects kind of jump out of my scraps and present themselves- where the big pieces usually sit on the shelves like wall flowers. My scrap pile frequently dwindles. It is always accessible and looks like paint waiting to to go on a canvas.
