I've been baking a lot of bread lately. This. stuff. is. awesome. I'd love to have you all over for a slice of bread with butter and jam, but that isn't possible. So, I figured that sharing the recipe would be the next best thing. :) (I love how this loaf slightly resembles the shape of Wisconsin. Ha!)
I got the recipe from a friend, so we've affectionately dubbed it "Ben bread". I did a little tweaking to the recipe, because that's what I do. I've baked this bread up to five times in a week! It's that good.
To make Ben bread you will need:
1 1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons olive oil
4 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
3 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup rolled oats
2 tablespoons ground flax seed
2 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons active dry yeast
Place all the ingredients in a bread machine and use a basic bread setting.
I don't care for how my bread tastes when it's baked in the bread machine itself, so I set mine on the dough setting. After the dough is done, I place it in a greased bread pan, let it rise in the pan until the dough is about an inch over the sides of the pan. Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
It's great fresh out of the oven. It's great toasted. It's awesome with a slathering of butter and jam. Or butter and honey. Or just butter. It's worth your jeans getting a little bit snug. Maybe. :P

mmmmmm wish I could reach into the screen and have a bite or 10!
Yum! I just enjoyed a couple of slices done up just like this at lunch time. Homemade bread is one of my biggest weaknesses (and I bet you thought that I only swooned over fabric! ha!) ;o)
I just love you more and more! :) I ONLY make my own bread, but am finding my recipe a little blah lately. How did you know I needed a little change?! :) This one is going in tomorrow! Thanks so much!
Yum. With my mother's homemade strawberry jam: double yum!
I make a honey/wheat bread for our family, and I've always wanted a recipe with oats in it! Thanks for sharing, can't wait to try...maybe tonight!! :)
That's the first thing I noticed about the bread slice was that it is shaped like Wisconsin! I live in WI too! :) And home made bread is one of the best things there is!
lol! You make me wish I had a bread machine. :)
Thanks, I'll try it! I don't have a bread machine, so I can just do it like regular, right?
Are you willing to trade fabric for my secret Kick Ass Peach Jam recipe that involves habenero's and makes broiled salmon simply amazing?
I guess I won't have to ask you for the recipe now ... And five times a week???
Sounds and looks yummy! I am going to have to make me some!!
Yeah! Thanks for sharing with the bread machine instructions, too. Gonna have to try this one!
I also have been making my own bread lately! We also got bored with my recipe. I will be trying this today! Thank you!
Thank Ben for us also. i never thought of taking it out of the machine and baking in the oven. That is a great tip. Thank you.
You had me at the "snug jeans" bit.
Sounds yummy! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
LOVE homemade bread! Although, I make all mine by hand. Right now the kids are stuck on making banana bread. lol But we will have to try this one! Thanks for the recipe!
"Looks like the shape of Wisconsin"......too funny!!! I'm still laughing!!
Looks like I'll have to make some of that!
Wisconsin? You have an awesome governor out there!
Das sieht sehr lecker aus. Ich habe mir das Rezept von Google übersetzen lassen und werde es ausprobieren.
Liebe Grüße

Heading to the kitchen to bake some Ben Bread! :o) Thanks for the recipe! I bake bread on a regular basis (for our family-grinding up the wheat) and don't have a bread maker, so wish me luck!
Have a super weekend!!
Sincerely, Trish
Thanks for the recipe. I made it last night because I needed to make bread anyway. I did the dough mode like you suggested, but I did forget about it in the bread pan for a bit. It got a little large, but still tasted really good. We will definitely make it again.
The bread looks so tasty :) I just love the smell of fresh baked bread :)
Thank you for the recipe, Im going to give it a go :)
I love bread! My weakness! Thank you for sharing. I'll have to give it a try.
Glad to hear I am not the only one who does not like it made in the bread machine!! My children have gotten spoiled with my homemade bread! ( I don't buy bread) This looks like a great addition to my 2 regular recipes I use! Thanks!!
Thank you for sharing recipe....nice hearty and satisfying! Hubs has started making bread and is addicted to the comforting process...I get the results!!
Sounds yummy! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Mmm, fresh bread and strawberry jam. My mouth is watering so badly now!
Hey, nice bread rug there... ;->
Thanks for the recipe!
Yum - looks delish, especially slathered in that jam! Makes me wish I had a bread machine to do the part I like doing the least by hand. Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Yum!! It looks delicious :-) thanks for sharing!
I made this. It is soooooooo good! Thanks for sharing!
I noticed your photo first and thought, um, bread in the shape of WI and cute plate! Go Sconnie girl! :)
Oooh Yum! Thanks for the recipe -- it looks wonderful. I LOVE to bake bread.
GO WI! Wondering if you have to have flaxseed, I have none on hand:( Really want to make this though as I keep saying "I need to make homemade bread when my store bought runs out!"
This recipe sounds yummy. I am going to give it a try. I too never bake my bread dough in the bread machine, the crust always seems overdone and dry. Thanks for sharing. By the way, I love your quilt tutorials. I am in the process of making a second quilt from your list. I look forward to your new creations at the end of each month.
will try this recipe tomorrow. I have some homemade rhubarb/cherry jam......
Yummy!! Did you make it with white flour or wheat?
Hey Crazymom - thanks for the recipe. I have made 1, and the 2nd is in the oven.....first one I used some whole wheat, 2nd I left alone - took salt out of both as my husband can't have any salt, so never has bread.....so occasionally I bake it and recalled your recipe. Of course he and the kids are out, and I have to sample the bread (1st one), oddly enough with butter and homemade strawberry jam on top..... ;)
Cheers, and thanks!
Hi, Looks so yummy. Ok--so you tweaked the recipe, what changes did you make to the recipe that makes yours different, better, etc...

Man, I need to live closer to my sisters!!! That Wisconsin shaped piece of bread with jam on it looks MARVELOUS!
Made mine yesterday, YUM! Thanks for sharing :)
What size loaf does this make? My breadmaker has two size settings.
I'll try this after the weekend.. it looks great and I need a change from my usual recipe.
Diana,
I would use the larger size on your bread machine.
