cut 6 strips 2.5" x the width of fabric from a printed fabric
cut 6 strips 2.5" x the width of fabric from the background fabric
sew together using a quarter inch seam allowance
cut 2 1/2" segments
make four patches
you will need 4 four patches for each setting block, for a total of 48 four patches.
cut 4 squares 4 1/2" for each setting block from the background, for a total of 48 squares
cut 1 square 4 1/2" for each setting block from the printed fabric, for a total of 12 squares
layout as shown
sew together and square up the blocks to 12.5".
I think all those numbers are right. Let me know if you encounter any errors.

I was just thinking today that I wished I knew how to do these blocks so that I could get started- perfect timing... also these give me yet another excuse to avoid making the hundred(s) of log cabin blocks that I've committed myself to making!

How do you sew all those little squares together so perfectly? I've tried to do it before, and they end up not being the same. Do you use a pencil and mark each square?

I made the setting blocks using the Week One pattern from the last quilt along. I'm not good with 4 patches. I also decided to use 13 sashing blocks to make a big X across the center of the couch and save the 13th star for a pillow cover for the little pillow on the bed. I am loving this quilt.
This looks like fun,and broken down to a bite size challenge for a new quilter. I've comleted a basic quilt course so I'm ready.
Question:Probably a newbie question but in ordering bacground fabric total you said about 7 yards, plus 2 for setting pieces = total of 9 yards. Does that seven yards count for the binding and backing?

that yardage does not allow for backing or binding. I think you will need about 3/4 yard for binding (that is a bit extra, but I would purchase at least that much) and then about 5 yards for the backing.

can you tell me about how much yardage I need the the background and med fabric to do the setting blocks? I need to buy more white background fabric and I haven't picked out my med fabric for the setting blocks yet.
I know that you will need about a yard for the medium print-where I used polka dot fabric. And for the background fabric I would get a few yards. you will need some of each for the sashing and the posts of the sashing, so save any extras you have.
Maybe you have already answered this question somewhere, but how much printed fabric did you need to have enough to make all 12 setting blocks?

I dont quilt along, but I started to like doing this.
I just try this pattern in my block.
It is not perfect yet.
I am starting this quilt for my daughter for her 5th birthday. She is gonna love it.. I am doing hers with pinks. No white.. couldn't find any at our tiny fabric store. It will still be cute! This will be my first real quilt. All my other ones are tie quilts.. I'll let you know hot it turns out, I hope.. :)
