Every Last Piece

Lynn Harris wrote a wonderful scrap quilt book called Every Last Piece. I was anxiously awaiting the release of her book, knowing that she loves scraps at least, if not more, than I do. She did a great job on her book...so many quilts (with tiny pieces) that I would like to make!
I'm still working my way through reading the book (I'm taking my time) but I've enjoyed it so far. Lynn shares how she sorts her scraps (always an interesting topic to me!) and the quilt gallery where she shares quilts she has made over the years is very inspiring!
I love Lynn's quilts because they are scrappy, of course, but they are also authentic and timeless. She does beautiful work!

Here are a few of my favorites:

This one has to be at the top of my list. I literally laughed out loud when I read the caption next to the quilt. Lynn admits that if she had read the directions for the quilt beforehand, she probably would have never started the quilt. I love that!

Every Last Piece is published by Interweave and is available on Amazon, of course! If you would like to win a copy of the book, please leave a comment on this post. In your comment, I would like to hear what is the smallest size of scrap you save! (You can see my answer here. Please don't judge! :) )

The giveaway is open to both international and US readers alike. Please, only one comment per person. I plan to pick a winner on Saturday!

The smallest pieces I save are 2"x 2". I'm not brave enough to save anything smaller so perhaps this book might help.

I've been saving binding triangles (since I saw it in your book) and probably down to 1 inch squares. I have a big bin of assorted shapes from all my clothes sewing too. I keep thinking I'm going to make fashion doll (barbie) clothes out of them all... hahaha! maybe one day :) I recently made a pin cushion with tiny scraps using a method I saw by 15 minutes of play from teeny tiny scraps.

The book looks very inspiring. The smallest scrap I save is about 1.5 inch square. Love scrap quilts.

I'm a fabric tragic so I usually keep anything from an inch upwards. One day those tiny scraps will come in handy....one day.....mmmm...

(trying to answer again bc it didn't look like it took the first time).....1 inch square. Maybe a little bit bigger than that.

I don't keep anything smaller than 1.5" squares. Not enough room for more than that.

It's 3/4 × 3/4 inch squares, just in case...

I do a lot of small scale appliqué, so no scrap is safe!

I have just 2 inch scraps, but I love all tiny things. I find the pictures you showed very inspiring!

Years ago I talked with an old Lady who does a lot of Patchwork. She told me that she keeps every scrap which is not smaller than a 5 Deutsche Mark coin. This coin does not exist anymore due to the fact that we have the Euro now but I also stick to this size. The coin had a Diameter of 29 mm whis is 1,1"

I keep anything that's 1" or bigger. I hope one day to use all of these for a quilt that will have every fabric I've ever used :)

I try to discard anything under 2", though it is hard to do! I just hate throwing that pretty stuff away. Thanks for the chance to win.

I save "every last piece!" The skinny trimmings look cute in mason jars or can be used as filler somewhere; the strings go in the future crochet rug pile... you get the idea. This book looks amazing. Thanks for the chance to win!

I keep strips that are one inch and two inch squares.

I love scrappy quilts

Everything that's 2.5" square or larger I keep for myself. Smaller bits go to a friend who does not discriminate on size!

I have 1" strings and squares. It's always fun to have little bits to sew together!

I would love to win/have this book.
My smallest scrap would be about 1.5" x 1.5"--enough for a coin stack.
The fkey word here, though, is save. I've yet to make a scrap quilt--although I have them nicely organized!
Another interesting question might be "What's the biggest size scrap you consider a scrap?"

I save them ALL! There is currently a pile of 1/2"x4" on my cutting table that I am saving for making cards because I can't bare to throw them away. After making a courthouse steps heart block from Jen Kingwell's new book that used 1"X1" - 1"x4" pieces just last week I know most anything can be used! So I save them all. Really. This book looks great for someone like me!

Really tiny! I blame it on the projects in great books like yours, that convince me that I really will use them all up one day :-)

i save pieces that are 1.5 inches and strips that are 3/4. i would love this book because most of my stash is little scraps-i hardly have fabric that is bigger than a fat qtr. ok except for backs and bindings.

I save as small as 1 inch - to use for tiny EPP - and this book looks like a great addition to my library - thanks for the chance to win it!

I keep all of my scraps. The smallest is about 1/2 to 3/4 in.
I sew all of the same color family together and use this as my material for my next scrap quilt/

I have some squares that are smaller than 1 1/2" but don't know if I'll ever use them.

Barb said...

Yikes! Compared to you thrifty quilters, I save only yardage. My smallest pieces are 2-1/2"

margaret said...

i love scraps! the smallest i save for a purpose has been 1 1/2". lately i have been saving down to 1/2 inch to use in truck/house windows and wheels.
this book would be soooo awesome to have.

Donna said...

I do love playing with scraps so the smallest pieces I have are about 1-1/2." I can see I'm not alone!

Yes, would love a chance to win a copy of Every Last Piece.
***I do not keep peices for sewing that are less than 1 inch wide as I cannot handle them very easily.

tahoe34 said...

The book looks awesome! I can't save too many scraps due to lack of space so probably 4 inches is my max!

Montymoo said...

My smallest are probably 1.5 x 1.5. You never know when you're going to need something :)

The smallest squares I save are 1,5 inch, but I have a box with crumbs that are much smaller.
I love the picture of the Stardust quilt in the book. But, omg, all those tiny squares!

PugMom said...

I'm now officially keeping everything. I prefer scraps of at least two inches. Smaller pieces go in a bag for my friend Janet. And the tiny strings and selvages are saved to stuff pet beds for the local shelter. My house is overflowing!

Johanna said...

I probably have 1" squares. I need some oranization though!

Unknown said...

If it's a favorite line of fabric, I save anything at least 1/2 in wide. If it's not a favorite, then I save 2 in wide and bigger. Thanks for the chance to win!

mtquilter said...

I probably save 1" or larger. I do have some small HST's that I think someday may make something. You never know when just the right scrap will come in handy!

Linda M said...

I clearly need to look at what I throw out. I'd probably keep something if it made a 2.5" square. But I haven't been quilting for that long so don't have many scraps.

Jessica said...

I keep 1" squares and binding triangles of strips from about 1.5". I have no idea what for but seeing some of those photos I think making some tiny wonky stars when the mood strikes could be a good start

Mary Beth said...

About 2" square. This book would be useful!

Kristy said...

I keep it all! Lol! If I can't get a 1/4" seam out of it, it goes in the pillowcase to make a pet bed for the local animal shelter.

SuperMomNoCape said...

Oh I like that Twinkling Stars quilt. It looks like it's made with wonky stars and I'm about to start one this week. The smallest scrap I save is about 1.5 inches or so.
