I thought it would be fun to do a little mini series on the blog this week while I'm working on my WIPs. (WIP stands for Work In Progress) Each day I will strive to work on a current project and share my progress. Maybe I'll actually accomplish something. Accountability is a good thing!
A few weeks ago I brought home two very full grocery bags of scraps compliments of the free table at the Minneapolis Modern Quilt guild meeting. I resisted for awhile, but by the end of the meeting I knew that they were coming home with me. I'm happy to have adopted them.
I started sewing little bits together almost right away. This will be yet another version of a bright birch trees quilt. (Pattern is available
here.) This is my 4th time making this quilt. I LOVE it every time....I often say that this quilt is the poster child for "every scrap deserves a chance".
So far I have 8/20 blocks complete! I have several more strips sewn together, so the forest should keep growing at a decent pace. At least that's the hope!

I love this quilt and have been studiously avoiding buying the pattern, but I think I may have to cave in now. What I particularly love about this quilt is the bright backgrounds. I would have to purchase some bright solids since my stash has so few. Any recommendations on how to choose solids to put into a stash? When I see them at the fabric store, I usually get overwhelmed by the color choices so I don't buy any.

I think it would be cool to have 1 block with solid trees and a pieced background. Love your work.

I love this idea. I have been trying to work with all my scraps. I started to get bogged down with the amount of color in crumb blocks and vortex blocks. I have some coins sewn, but I like the narrowness of your strips!

Aahh! I see you are a sucker for scraps too! Like we don't have enough of our own, we are willing to take others! LOL
You have selected a great pattern to use them up. I always like seeing that pattern made up. Maybe I will get to make one in the future. This year I am focusing on my UFOs and WIPs!

I remember a while back you held a pattern giveaway on your site and I chose this one. I haven't made it yet and I love it. Each looks a bit different and they are always so bright and cheery.
You've developed quite the reputation for accepting, and USING, unwanted scraps! I've taken a cue from you and have been doing the same. I came home Sunday from the Central Florida MQG retreat with the scrap bag. Today I sifted through it, cutting up 1" squares and 1-1/2" as leaders and enders. I haven't yet made your birch trees quilt, but I "get" why you're doing it! It's so difficult to see unloved scraps heading to the dump, when we KNOW they are quilt-worthy! There aren't enough years to rescue all the scraps though!
This idea makes me so happy! It's almost like the idea of treating every day like Friday.
I NEED to do a quilt like this - to give all my scraps a chance!
I love this quilt. If the scrappy birch strips weren't cool enough, the interesting background colors would make up for it.
