the subtle quilt

Welcome to finish up Friday AND the final day of the No Scrap Left Behind blog tour. I appreciate all of the kind comments that were left along the way. It's been fun to finally show the quilts I worked so hard on behind the scenes for months on end. (Secret sewing is not easy!)

Today my friend Amy, of Diary of a Quilter, is sharing her beautiful take on the subtle quilt. Amy and I have been long time blog friends and we've even been quilt market roommates a time or two. I had to chuckle when she picked the subtle quilt, because it seemed like it would be right up her alley. It's fun to see the quilt sewn up in a different color way, too! She's giving away a copy of the book, so be sure to visit her here.

There's so much I could say about this quilt, I don't even know where to start. It's definitely a favorite! In a lot of ways this quilt reminds me of my grandmother. She was a simple, hard-working lady who loved the color red. She was definitely a make-do-and-mend kind of woman. This quilt is an homage to her.
This quilt started out with the idea of making a scrappy Irish chain quilt, but completely scrappy, not focusing on just one color for the chain. This is really embarrassing, but this was the start....
It was a very rocky start, I might add, but I liked the idea too much to let it go. In the book, I shared the process of how I got from the photo, above, to the finished quilt, below. I thought it was important to include a section in the book about what to do when things AREN'T working. (Because I know that that's my reality a lot of times. ha!) Sometimes it's quite a process to get from the initial idea to the finished quilt.... but it's always worth it!
I used up a LOT of scraps for this quilt. Especially my low volume stash. I love that there is so much variety in the patchwork. One could look at it for hours. All of the chain blocks are red and white polka dots. A classic and a favorite. I have a feeling that this quilt will age very well.
Steffani did the beautiful quilting on this one, as well. I chose a simple daisy pattern, which finishes it off quite nicely.
This quilt is a generous twin size...66" x 90", but it would be easy to adapt to almost any size.

Today, I'm going to do a giveaway as well! I'm going to be giving away two copies of my new book! One winner, within the US, will receive a hard copy of No Scrap Left Behind. One winner, outside the US, will win a digital copy of the book. If you'd like to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear what your favorite color (or combination) is at the moment. Be sure to include whether you are in the US or not, as well as your email address, so I can contact you in case you win. Thank you SO MUCH for celebrating my book release with me. I sure appreciate it!

edited to add: the giveaway is now closed. thanks to all who entered!

Ok, now it's time to link up your finishes for the week! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

I love red and white quilts. The polka dots are perfect. Thanks for this great blog tour to celebrate your book. I just finished my third vortex quilt and have another one started with leftovers from this one...sort of like a sourdough starter....I feed it and it eventually gets made into something.

I really like this quilt. There's something very satisfying about simply piecing together squares of the same size. Right now, bright happy colors and combinations are keeping my spirits up. We're in Idaho.

I am loving turquoise in anything. I have always liked it but in recent years, It has grown into a mania. Even if I don't win a copy, I will buy one. I love this red quilt too much to let it get away. Imagine it in turquoise...

I am a blue girl. When I clean up my scraps, I can't believe how many quilts I have made that include blue. Therefore I have made several blue scrap quilts. It is a wondeful vicious cycle. I have just finished a scrap quilt that my grandmother started with me. She rounded up the funniest collection of scraps - some of my childhood dress scraps, her apron scraps, old curtains, curtain linings, you name it. Anyways I have been quilting about 30 years and promised on her deathbed (in 1994) that I would finish it. True to my word, I put the binding on it today. I thought of her with every hand stitch that I put into it, it is English Paper Piecing, and I am thrilled to honour her with this sentimental and cute (but not the prettiest) twin bed quilt. I love that quilting brings our grandmothers to mind. Now that I am a grandmother, I am thrilled that my grandchildren love quilts and enjoy many at home and at Grandma's. Janice.snell@gmail.com

Hello Amanda,
I am from Germany and I lOVE green. This is also the reason for starting the quilting. At last I could do a lot with all those hundred of thousand greens!!! I am working on my 3rd green quilt within a year.

And I love your book. I have the Sunday Morning Book and love all those inspirations AND that I must not throw away a bit of my precious fabrics (which are the double of the price as in USA!).

Love your fable for polka dots, and that there are so many different. I used to have a shirt in red which I loved as a teenager!

Greetings and thank you so much for that blog hop.

Definitely red and white quilts top my favourite colour combo and made two R&W quilts, but one is more red and tan/cream, as my taste are the murky tones, rather than clear. I love a Irish Chain pattern, but only done it in scrap blue and white, I was planning a scrappy coloured one, like the "fail" you just showed. So disappointed to see that it didnt flow well, I will have to give that some thought as I have already cut a lot of my scraps up to use in that pattern! Congratulations on the publishing of your new book, hope it is a success.

I like that you asked "at the moment" :) Blue and Yellow - at this moment! ;) I'm in the US.

An Irish Chain was my very first quilt. Maybe it's time to revisit that. I am never about one favoritest color. At the very least, it's a range of a color, does that make me indecisive or visionary? Ha! Right now I'm all about the turquoise, teal, aqua, blue-green, green-blue and anything else in the box/shop that is near those.

the blog hop has been lots of fun and I love all your quilts, congratulations on a great book! Lately I've been making quilts with lots of solid colors so I can't say I have a favorite color at the moment. I'm in the US.

Black and white (or vanilla) is an all time classic for me as my clothes will attest to. I do love colors in general the more saturated (like the jewel tones), the more they pull me in. I have immensely enjoyed this blog hop. I'm a scrappy lover to the grain.

(USA) I'm really a rainbow girl at heart but do have streaks where a color or range of colors stand out to catch my interest. At present it's ocean colors - blue, aqua, teal, purple (think Kate Spain's Horizon collection) - peaceful, calm, refreshing. Your book is amazing!

Love, love, love this Irish chain. I have been collecting vintage sheets to try something similar, with a low volume scrappy background and then solids for the chain. I am haunting thrift shops and garage sales this summer to try to collect what I need to make it this winter! Would love to win the book. I'm in Montana, USA

I've been gradually gravitating toward the beautiful cooling blue/green aquas lately. I guess I just need to make a quilt using that color predominately - and totally scrappy of course, the more aquas the better! Why use a few when you can use 50! I'm in Texas.

I would say that my favorite has always been a blue or teal, but that red quilt is REALLY calling to me.

Love scrap quilts and I seem to keep making scraps so I'd love to win a copy of your book please!

I've always liked Irish Chain quilts, but how much more interesting is this scrappy version, lovely! I don't have a favourite colour combination at the moment, but whenever I see a red and white quilt I think I should make one. It's timeless.

Greetings from Cape Breton! I didn't finish anything this week :(, but I'll have fun strolling through your linkys to see who did! Love this quilt. Has that very old fashioned, utilitarian look that appeals to me, I'm collecting red scraps, but hadn't thought of an Irish chain. Hmmm. Enjoy your day! The hop has been fun! Congratulations on your book. It looks just delightful. XO

My favourite colour is purple, any shade of purple. Haven't made any quilts in this colour but have lots of fabric to do so. Loving the impact of your Subtle quilt, Amy's version, too. Would be amazing made with purple as the stand out colour!

I would so love to win your book here in Kansas City! You have a big fan here. I've been making scrappy 9 patches, so will see how that goes compared to yours and Amy's. Love them both. Right now, my favorite color is grass green. Thanks for a chance to win your book, and congratulations on that! Barb at btts90@aol.com.

The finished scrappy quilt has symmetry which is pleasing to the eye in my humble opinion. Coincidentally, I am gathering red and white fabrics to make a scrappy quilt.

I love that it's not just red squares, it's red with white polka dots! So fun. My favorite color at the moment is aqua/teal - I must be longing for summertime! Congrats on the book and thank you for the giveaway.

Oh, I've been dreaming of a red and white quilt for a while now! I haven't got beyond the effervescent dream-planning stage because I've been making baby quilts (the last one was blues and turquoises with a reverse of big whites and oranges) or quilts for the beds in other people's houses. You have, as is so often the case, inspired me over here in Connecticut.

I love this quilt so very much! I want to make an Irish Chain quilt, and using low volume scrappiness for the background really makes it so interesting and fun! I love so many quilts in your new book, and this one of my favorites. I admit it, I have claimed that several quilts in this book are my FAVORITE as you've posted about the book each day! Right now, I'm loving navy, and mixing it with pink or orange or peach seems to be my current combinations. I'm clearly a multi-favorite kind of quilter! Congratulations on your beautiful second book!

Wow, I just love this quilt! Really great color combo and the red dot fabric is perfect. It is eye catching and yet soft.

I am always a big fan of blue and it is what I have the most of in my stash. Whenever I shop for fabric, I have to try to talk myself out of buying MORE blue. Lately I have been wanting to use more purple in my quilts. It is remarkably difficult to find good shades of purple. I am really liking purple with yellow or with orange.
