the subtle quilt

Welcome to finish up Friday AND the final day of the No Scrap Left Behind blog tour. I appreciate all of the kind comments that were left along the way. It's been fun to finally show the quilts I worked so hard on behind the scenes for months on end. (Secret sewing is not easy!)

Today my friend Amy, of Diary of a Quilter, is sharing her beautiful take on the subtle quilt. Amy and I have been long time blog friends and we've even been quilt market roommates a time or two. I had to chuckle when she picked the subtle quilt, because it seemed like it would be right up her alley. It's fun to see the quilt sewn up in a different color way, too! She's giving away a copy of the book, so be sure to visit her here.

There's so much I could say about this quilt, I don't even know where to start. It's definitely a favorite! In a lot of ways this quilt reminds me of my grandmother. She was a simple, hard-working lady who loved the color red. She was definitely a make-do-and-mend kind of woman. This quilt is an homage to her.
This quilt started out with the idea of making a scrappy Irish chain quilt, but completely scrappy, not focusing on just one color for the chain. This is really embarrassing, but this was the start....
It was a very rocky start, I might add, but I liked the idea too much to let it go. In the book, I shared the process of how I got from the photo, above, to the finished quilt, below. I thought it was important to include a section in the book about what to do when things AREN'T working. (Because I know that that's my reality a lot of times. ha!) Sometimes it's quite a process to get from the initial idea to the finished quilt.... but it's always worth it!
I used up a LOT of scraps for this quilt. Especially my low volume stash. I love that there is so much variety in the patchwork. One could look at it for hours. All of the chain blocks are red and white polka dots. A classic and a favorite. I have a feeling that this quilt will age very well.
Steffani did the beautiful quilting on this one, as well. I chose a simple daisy pattern, which finishes it off quite nicely.
This quilt is a generous twin size...66" x 90", but it would be easy to adapt to almost any size.

Today, I'm going to do a giveaway as well! I'm going to be giving away two copies of my new book! One winner, within the US, will receive a hard copy of No Scrap Left Behind. One winner, outside the US, will win a digital copy of the book. If you'd like to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear what your favorite color (or combination) is at the moment. Be sure to include whether you are in the US or not, as well as your email address, so I can contact you in case you win. Thank you SO MUCH for celebrating my book release with me. I sure appreciate it!

edited to add: the giveaway is now closed. thanks to all who entered!

Ok, now it's time to link up your finishes for the week! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

I just love your quilt. Those red polka dots are very clever and I am a big fan of low volume neutrals for backgrounds. I make lots of scrappy quilts and love the simple, traditional patterns. So timeless and truly charming! I would love to win your book and am in the USA. Thanks for the chance and sharing your work.

I just finished a tshirt quilt in black and gold (it was the student's high school colors) and I love how it turned out! I also had a variety (50?) of gray shades in there too.

For me there is almost always some navy in each quilt I make, with some aqua or light blue thrown in. I also a few other colors, but those blues are almost always in the pile.

I have never made an Irish chain quilt, but would love to try one sometime. This quilt looks like it would be a perfect pattern to try!

Beautiful quilt, Irish chain is one of my favorites. Right now I'm working on a small quilt with fabric leftover from the casual style bridesmaids dresses that I made for our daughters wedding. It's a blue and white floral with some green mixed in. A fun little project. I'm in the US

I was given a half jelly roll that was mainly different shades of browns and greens. I thought it was too dark. I used a few other colorful strips and a cream background fabric and made a Jacob's Ladder quilt. I love how it turned out. My favorite color is purple and it usually play a significant role in most of my quilts. So this was a change for me. I am in the USA. Loved following along in the blog tour. Thanks so much!

I love this quilt. This is much more appealing than even the traditional Irish Chain, which I have always loved, because of the subtle variations in the negative space between the reds. I think it gives it depth and life.
I live in Minnesota, like you. My favorite color at the moment is red. My e mail is kilkennyrose@yahoo.com. This book is on my wish list, so if I don't win a copy, I'll drop lots of hints to my family for upcoming gift giving occasions.

I have made 3 Single Irish Chain quilts and I absolutely have wanted to make a scrappy one like yours. My first quilt I made was red and white and I adore it. My favorite color is anything bright! I don't care for anything very dull and if my favorite is bright, then I love it. I think that kind of kills black and grays and white, though I do use them a lot as background. But bright lime, yellow, red and orange and green turn me on.

WOW-- looking at your quilt --- it is tantalizing. I love red/white polka dots -- reminds me of ladybugs. I LOVE ladybugs, even named my beagle pup Ladybug plus everything I make has a tiny ladybug tag sewn in a corner. But, I also want to make one for my daughter. Her new living room accent color is sea blue aqua & tan. The whole family loves to snuggle under a throw to watch tv. So I guess my favorite color is not red but POLKA DOT/RED. Thanks for change to enter drawing. In fact the picture I think that will show IS Ms Ladybug at 17 yrs of age. She's gone now.

I do love the color red in quilts and especially the Irish Chain! I made a red and cream Irish chain two years ago and as I was working on it, I didn't care for it at all. However, I persevered and now that it's finished, quilted and bound, it's one of my favorites and I'm so glad I finished it. One of the things I like about your Irish Chain is the pastel blues scattered throughout. Even though I love red, I'm weak when it comes to pastels! I don't have tons of scraps, so I'll be buying a solid for that. Maybe white, maybe a purplish gray, maybe a jeansy blue. I'm in Belgium.

Great job with the book and the interesting ways to work scrappy.

It's funny, I really started thinking which color is my absolute favorite and can never narrow it down to just one. Then I really started diggin real deep and discovered I am a seasonal favorite color gal.....so it goes like this......winter, it's Blue, Spring it's Orange, summer it's Red, and fall is auburn. So those are my favorite color according to which season I am in. So for today, Orange has it!
Love the book!

All of your quilts are so happy and beautiful. Thanks for sharing your process--interesting to see that you reject some prototypes, too! Congrats on your gorgeous new book. My favorite color combo right now is purple, aqua and green...and all those intermediate shades on the cool side of the color wheel.

I love the idea of using red for the chain in this quilt. I think my favourite colour changes - but it's probably blue or aqua.

Your quilt is lovely! Reading your connection to the red made me think of my grandmothers. I love that something as simple as a color can stir up those memories. I am loving blue and white just now (well, if we're being honest I love it pretty much always!). Congratulations on your book and thanks for offering the great prize!

Your newest book looks amazing. I do really love the final draft of your version of the red and neutrals Irish chain. What a great use of scraps. I am confident that my grandaughter could use this idea to create her first quilt because of the simple sewing. Your book is a clear direction scheme for beginner as well as advanced sewists. Love it so much. gdavidhoffmanatyahoodotcom

I love the color green, but for a quilt I really love blue and white. It just feels so classic (like red and white, too). I live in Canada.

Blue and white is my favorite. I love all color combinations, but always seem to gravitate back to this age-old combo. Having said that, I feel compelled to give a try to red and white after seeing this wonderful quilt. So fun and cheerful. Looks like it would be perfect for cuddling up and reading a book, napping, watching movies and munching popcorn, family room picnics, dining room table forts, etc - definite a go-to for all occasions. Thanks for sharing your creativity and a chance to win your second book. I live in the US - Paducah, KY.

Love your first book and can't wait for my copy of No Scraps! My favorite color combo is classic red and white but I'm thinking of an Irish Chain in red and scrappy neutrals. I'm a Louisiana girl (so USA) who loves everything about quilting.
Thanks for the fun this week and for the giveaway. Good luck to everyone!

I haven't quilted much with red fabric, but really love it! I have never tried an Irish Chain either, and I think I would learn a lot from this book. My favorite color combo right now is green and blue. I am in the US.

I believe that I just might follow your lead and do this up with my favorite greens in the chains. Congratulations on your book.

Love your take on the Irish chain. I've seen it done so many ways, and I'd love to make each one. Lately I've been working with bright turquoise, pink and yellow. Such a fun combination!!

I love this quilt, especially that there aren't any blank white squares, just more smaller, subtly printed squares. I need to read the section about this quilt in your book and how you moved from your original idea. It happens to me a lot that what I thought would be great turns out not to be so great.

My favorite colors just now are red and brown.

Thanks for offering the giveaway and sharing your quilt.

I love teal and purple. All rainbow colors actually though, too. I'd love to win your book.

I'm knee deep in yellow while working on an all yellow trip around the world quilt. Im not a huge fan of that color but I do like the way it's turning out.

What a great quilt - using one color for the chain was perfect. It is so inspiring to see that you tried something (mixed patch chain), it didn't work, and you moved on and found something that did! It is the "moving on" that is key! Thank you for putting together this awesome scrap book.
