Lines by Design blog hop

Today I'm happy to be a stop on my friend Debbie's blog tour for her new book, Lines by Design Quilts. This book is so true to Debbie's clean, graphic and straightforward style. The book contains 17 fun projects--in various sizes--to sew and inspire. It's a beautiful book!
The bar chart quilt caught my eye immediately. I've thought about making something similar to this for a long time, but I never had enough vision to follow through. For that reason, I was more than happy to give this pattern a try. It's much better than I could have done on my own!
I've had this red jelly roll in my stash for years, so I was thrilled to finally have a reason to sew it up! I pulled various fabrics from my stash to round things out. I am not good at following directions, or counting, apparently, so I had to add an additional fabric to the mix about half way though....but that's pretty typical for me! Ha!
Sewing with jelly rolls is messy. Yikes! I bet I will be vacuuming up red fuzz for the rest of the year...but it was totally worth it. I LOVE how the quilt turned out. LOVE it!
I was worried that some of the darker red prints that I pulled would blend into the background too much, but I think it turned out to be the perfect balance. Hurray! (And phew!)
When it came time to quilt it, I decided to do a small stipple in the background. I quilted loopy L's in the printed strips. I also changed thread colors for the strips: some were quilted in red thread, some were quilted in white thread. It required me to bury quite a few knots, but it was time well spent. I love how the stippling unifies the background strips. This quilt will be texture-iffic once it is washed!
The ovals print (on the left) was the last minute addition to the quilt. I'm glad I had to add one more fabric, because it introduced another scale of print to the quilt. It needed it!
It has been awhile since I machine bound a quilt, but this one was a good candidate for it! 3 out of the 4 corners turned out beautifully. I suppose that's the best I could ask for. :)
The backing was a very deliberate choice. I wanted something that would camouflage both the red and white threads. This definitely did the trick! (The backing, binding, ovals and one of the red polka dot fabrics are all from my good neighbors fabric line.)
The finished quilt is about 60" x 78" or so. I was tempted to make a few of those strips scrappy, but I resisted. Aren't you surprised? :) Red is a bold choice for the background, but I couldn't love it any more. I need to go bold more often!

(The red background fabric is Moda Bella Solid (9900-JR 16).)
Since this is a blog hop, Debbie and her publisher are giving away a copy of the book to one of my readers! If you would like to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I would love to hear what color of fabric is most prominent in your stash. (Is it because you always use it? Or is it because you never use it?) The contest is open to everyone! A hard copy will be sent to a US resident OR a digital copy will be sent to a resident outside of the US. I will pick a winner in a few days!

Oh! And feel free to visit the other stops on the blog tour to see more of the book:

Your quilt turned out fabulous (but then I am a huge fan of red) The color most prevalent in my stash is green, but I don't use it much anymore.

Whitney M said...

The color I have most in my stash is pink! And it's because I don't get to use it very often as my house is full of boys!

Renea said...

I seem to have lots of blue fabric in my stash. Not sure why I have sew much because I do use it. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

Afquilt said...

I have a lot of pink in my stash. Great for baby quilts!

Dayna said...

RED! Because it is bright and I like brights. Use them all the time. Has to do with getting older. Love your quilt. Need to look and see what I have for jelly rolls or ....pull out the strip cutter in my Accu Quilt Go and make my own.

Susanhusan said...

I think blue comprises most of my stash, but I am afraid to put it all together, so I am not sure!

Jennifer said...

I love lines! There are my favorites! I have mostly gray in my stash because it always seems to compliment and tone down any bright color I am using.

Unknown said...

As a math nerd, I love this bar graph quilt. My stash is almost entirely orange right now. Go bold or go home!

Lisanne said...

This book looks amazing! I'm a rookie sewer, so I haven't tried quilting yet, but I love the modern look of the quilt on the cover.
The most prominent colour in my stash is blue, although black is a close second, because these are the colours I wear most often.

Jill said...

Beautiful quilt - love the red patterns! I have a lot of blue fabric in my stash. I think it's because I'm drawn to that color and I use it a lot. thanks.

Katie Z. said...

Blue. I naturally buy it, but I make quilts in many colors, so I don't use it as fast as I purchase. I've been working on correcting the imbalance with more deliberate purchasing.

Just Another Quilter said...

Beautiful quilt. Love the simplicity. Love the texture Makes me smile.

Georgia said...

Love that red quilt! My stash consists of more blue than anything else simply because I like blue.

Unknown said...

Your quilt looks amazing. I would have never chosen red but it shows a lot of red can still look great! The color that is most prominent in my stash is probably blue. I like it so I buy it and then it doesn't seem to get used.

DianeY said...

I really do love your red quilt! I used to use a lot of red, but I haven't in awhile now. My stash seems to be heavy in blues/aqua so and I do use it a lot. Obviously I also buy it a lot!

Carie @ Space for the Butterflies said...

Blue blue blue and more blue for me! And it's fairly well represented in my quilts too - everything seems to have a smidgen of blue in it somewhere. I sorted out my scraps a little while ago and I have double the blue of anything else!

Rebecca said...

When I finely got my stash sorted last year I found I had tons of blue!!!

lynne.litchfield@gmail.com said...

Love that quilt! Just started again after several years of manic knitting, and discovered that I had an awful lot of green in my stash!! Two green quilts later and i might have re-dressed the balance though!
I too have a red jelly roll just begging to be used, but mine is patterned so will need a different plain. I really need to look for ideas!

Orange is my color. I use it hord it and always buy it when I can't find what I went to the fabric shop for. I am inspired to make this quilt.

Laura said...

I have mostly blue because I work with a lot of scraps, and my friend who gives me scraps likes blue.

cathy said...

Warm neutral shades. Does that count as a color? I think I'm drawn to the texture and I am fascinated by the supporting role they play. I need to add bright clear colors to my stash. Especially since I am so attracted now to modern quilts. It's time to move on from traditional.

Silverthimble said...

The most prominent colour of fabric in my stash is green. Green is my favorite colour. Green is neutral in my books, just take a look at nature - green is everywhere!

ABT said...

I just organized all my fabric and by far the most frequent color is blue. I'm drawn to blue fabrics, but don't end up using them very often! I'm also trying to work with all my scraps, but keep buying new fabric so my stash stacks don't go down very quickly. You can make a lot of things with just scraps!

Anita said...

I have lots of blues and greens in my stash, but that's because I bought several yards of almost all fabrics of Birchtree Lane. Love the combination of blue and green!

Anonymous said...

I have a lot of orange in my stash because I've been collecting orange fat quarters to make a Fancy Fox quilt for my daughter...

Unknown said...

Red is my favorite color, so I'm always looking for fabrics to replenish my stash. Green is my least favorite, and I have piles of it! (It's just necessary sometimes, you know.)

Unknown said...

I love turquoise blues the brighter the better. Love the quilt.

Unknown said...

I would say that white is my most prominent color of fabric in my stash. Only because I use it a lot now for background. Your quilt is beautiful, love that vibrant red.

Wilma said...

Orange and turquoise seem to dominate current work. Very strong solids and large scale prints that blend with those colors too - I love bright high-contrast quilts. But red... that's just gorgeous!

Unknown said...

I seem to have the most gray. I tend to use that as my neutral. I adore your red choice!

Ruth said...

This is so beautiful! I have two coordinating Jelly Rolls I've been trying to find a pattern for and I think I'll try something like this :) I don't have a large stash so there probably isn't a dominant colour although I am drawn to purples and teals. I have a lot of teal at the moment as I've been collecting it for a quilt for my bedroom. There's also a lot of child friendly fabric to make things for my little boy.

Janelle said...

Love it love it love it! I especially love your choice of red for the background--I am trying to get away from neutrals for backgrounds and this is great inspiration for me! As for my stash, it's full of blues and purples right now.

celia ambrose said...

I would love to win this book. Your quilt turned out wonderful. (celiaambrose@hotmail.com)

Unknown said...

Gorgeous!! And my stash if full of blues, because I love them, very few yellows (a few because I know they're good for me, sorta like broccoli...), and lately many many greys because they're fashionable and beautiful right now.

Ben said...

I have lots of blue. And I do use it.

Amy said...

Your bold, red quilt is fun! Perfect for Valentines Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day.

My prominent stash color is blue, because it's my favorite. And I have made at least four blue and white quilts. Just love that combination.

Unknown said...

For some reason it's pink.... Need to add some reds yours is beautiful

I love love love the red. The color I have most in my stash is turquoise, the result of a scrap quilting class that got out of hand!

Margie said...

Lots of red and beige/tan. And I have just made several red quilts.

Diane said...

The color I have the most of in my stash is black/white. I cannot resist buying it. I love the bold contrast and I use,it a lot.

Margaret said...

I seem to have an abundance of greens--not sure why. I guess I don't use them much, or they just haven't been right for my projects. Hmmm... I 'm seeing a green version of the Bar Chart quilt....

Michelle said...

I love how your quilt turned out! Red is always a bold choice.

I have more black and white fabrics than any other. I always find a FQ to sneak into my buying pile. They are great to pair with more colorful patterns for zipper pouches and rice bags.

Gingerhutquilts said...

I love your quilt, I have never done anything so geometrical, so it completely surprised me I fell so in love with it!

My stash has a ton of tan and browns, I just haven't been using these colors. I use to do a lot of burgundy, green and tan quilts. What speaks to me now is bright colors, and I use more whites and gray fabrics in my latest quilts.

Shona Barbour said...

I seem to always have an abundance of orange fabric and I have no idea why! lol. I just stocked up on some blues as that is the colour I never seem to have! Another great blog post. shonabarbour@hotmail.com

I seem to have a lot of aqua, my daughter's favorite colors.

eleanor said...

Hmmm, I usually buy whole lines so can I say Tula Pink :) I'd say I have a lot of jewel tone prints. I always have to force myself to buy blenders and more neutral background colors.

Kathleen said...

Blues are predominant in my stash. Love jewel tones.... I do love this book!

I just purchased this book for my Guild. (It will be difficult to give it up!) I'll pass along the blog hop websites for members who are interested.

I love using black and white in my quilts - I keep accumulating them but I use them too! Thanks for the chance! mumbird3(at)gmail(dot)com

Anne said...

I have lots of greys and pale yellows in my stash ... Love those colours.

Lynda said...

I recently reorganized my fabrics and was astonished to see that I had so much aqua. My favorite color is orange so it is understandable that I have a lot of that, but aqua? I think that it is because I love the colors and prints, but have yet to make anything from them - that is my goal this year, making from my stash - do I see an aqua quilt in my future? Don't know yet.

Veronica said...

Interestingly, I have more pink than anything, even though that's not a color I use super often. My friend gave me quite a few pinks from her stash!

carrie said...

I have more blue than anything else, because I buy it and use it all the time.

Joann in PA said...

The red is awesome! One more to add to my list...

Jasmine said...

Right now I have a lot of green in my stash because I haven't started on its stash busting yet. I have been working on using my older stash so I can use newer fabrics. :) Thanks for the chance to win.

Lisa Boyer said...

I tend to inject red or aqua in anything I do; those are my two favorite colors. Meanwhile, green tends to pile up in my stash--I love green, but it never seems to find its way into my quilts. I think I should just make a green quilt next--perhaps this bar chart quilt!

Tami Von Zalez said...

That made me laugh - not good at counting or following directions, that's me too!

I would like to try one of these types of quilts. Please enter me for the drawing.

I have mainly dark blue in my stash - the result of buying up a Hawaiian shirt hoarder's 40+ pieces at an estate sale.

I love the quilt! Red is not a favorite color of mine but this one is beautiful. I have lots of brownish orange in my stash because I inherited it and am always looking for something to do with it.

I like red a lot, and I love your quilt!

EBattles said...

Funny, I had to look at my stash to figure out the dominant color. It's blue! Congrats on finishing this lovely quilt! Long strips are such a challenge for me so I give you mega bonus points for that :)

Kathleen said...

Your quilt turned out great! And I love how the fabric you chose for the binding looks. Blues and greens is what I'm drawn to, so I seem to have a lot of that. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

Your red quilt is lovely! I think right now turquoise might be most prominent in my stash. I use it in many combinations.

I'd say red and blue because those are my favourite colours.
Therefore I love your new quilt because it is so red! Really beautiful.

In one of the comments there was the Expression "rookie sewer". What does this mean? I like to learn new words and expressions.

My stash is fairly small, but I do have a lot of red in it! Thanks for the chance to win this great-looking book!

Nicole said...

I love your version! Are you not worried about colour bleeding though? (I've never cared/worried/or gotten screwed by bleeding but two friends have just had major problems in the past month, so now I'm a bit worried).

Bridget said...

My stash is full of reds and aqua. I just can't resist them!

Unknown said...

I love it, I dont have a lot of red in my stash, I think I'm scared of it!

Nicole said...

PS: I didn't realize there was a skill testing question to answer! My favourite colour is kind a poison green/chartreuse but I have the most blue. GAH, I have too much blue! I'm making an all blue twin size quilt to get rid of some of the blues and I STILL have too much.

Lee Anne said...

Your quilt turned out lovely! Although I usually use a great deal of color in my quilting...lately I have found the graphic punch of black and white appealing. Love experimenting!

Nancy said...

Blue fabric used to be the highest but I recently did a few blue quilts and have dropped the number so that it and white/beige are the most prominent colours.

I've got a small stash and nothing really stands out to me. If I had to pick something though, it would probably be blue or, surprisingly, low volume. I use a lot of low volume and my favorite color is blue, so it doesn't surprise me! :)

I have a lot of blue and I like to use it for patriotic, 9 patch and log cabin quilts.

Carol said...

I have lots of blue as I've always loved that color. But probably I have more neutrals than anything--from white on white to paper bag dark tan. Use them in most all my quilts.

Samantha said...

That red quilt is amazing! I'm not necessarily a red fan but that turned out so bold and fantastic.

My stash is always full of blues. I love blue. It's always been my favorite color.

Paula said...

That cover quilt is lovely, but the dirty floor under that radiator gives me the willies. Ugh. I love your red quilt! The color I love best and is prominent in my stash is blue.

Jodi said...

I'm surprised to say the most prominent are the oranges. Least prominent is red.

naurispelto said...

Pinks might me the most prominent. Maybe because I like to buy flower fabrics but I tend to sew more for my boys than for myself. They accept still flower prints, but I try to use others too ;)

Karen said...

I have the most solid blues, but the biggest print collection is "low volume." I jumped on the bandwagon, and now I have to use them up!

Josie McRazie said...

pink and your dreaded purple! ;0) I try to keep my neutrals stocked but always seem to be running low!!
Funny thing is for a long time it was blue ... I feel about blue the same way you feel about purple! But I was doing swaps and it seemed everyone wanted blue!! Uugh

My most prominent color is blue, which I guess I do use fairly frequently. My favorite color is purple, but it seems so hard to find good purples that I don't have much purple in my stash!

Lady Parasol said...

I have so many shades of purple which would look really good in a line quilt.

Wtrstone said...

Love your red and white bar quilt. It looks crisp yet warm and cozy at the same time. My stash seems to be composed of yellows and oranges at the moment... some of it leftovers from a baby quilt I finished a while ago.

Laura said...

Amanda Conger said...

Blues seem to multiply when I'm not looking. I think I use it less often than I expect. Yellows on the other hand are often used and always scarce. I've started to make a point of buying them to keep on hand!

I love your quilt! In this case, I think it's good you didn't go scrappy.... In my stash, blue is most prevalent. I think that's because there are so many shades of blue and I bought a lot of shades when I started quilting, but it turns out I do not use a lot of them very much.

What a beautiful quilt! I was thinking about my stash and honestly, I'm not sure I have one dominant *color*. I LOVE prints though, and if I'm remembering correctly, I think the majority of my prints involve flowers! I'm not sure why. Although I'm leaning toward the "I never use it" category. Maybe it's time to remedy that? :-)

Is Denyse Schmidt a color???? No? Then yellow and orange are the color i buy and use most often. Love that bold red background. The quilt i am working on now has a huge orange background. Cant wait to finish.

I haven't been quilting for very long. My stash is just getting going and is mostly leftover pieces from my extremely varied starter projects--but many of them are pieces of Jennifer Paganelli fabrics; she lives locally and is gloriously represented at our wonderful local quilt shop, Christie's Quilting Boutique. I've just started collecting dark blues and bright Kaffe Fassett things for a star quilt in my brain. And I've got a Japanese-inspired quilt in mind, with embroidered indigo and white sashiko squares with Japanese indigo prints (I have my eye on you, City Quilter in Manhattan). So maybe my stash aspires to dark blues?

Claudia, if you're still reading this: "rookie" means a beginner in a new enterprise. It's often used for sports--a rookie baseball player is in his first season in the major leagues, say. I myself am not a rookie sewer--I've sewed clothes since I was young--but I am a rookie quilter!

Your choice of red for the background was a bold move, but the correct one! Bravo to you! I have lots of blues and greens in my stash, so I guess I need to sew more! LOL

I love your bold choice of red for the background.... it was the perfect choice, considering you had it on hand. I absolutely love making a quilt entirely from stash. I always love your quilting choices. I so often push myself to do quilt too many motifs and in the end procrastinate instead of just getting it done.

Neutrals, cream, white & grey, are most prevalent in my stash. I can add whatever color strikes me when I'm ready, usually something in the red family.

I have mostly blues....because I LOVE blue!
Thank you for the chance to win this book!

Blues are the most prominent, because I love all hues and tones of it. The book looks awesome!

I love your red quilt! I wouldn't say I have any one prevalent color in my stash. I am a scrappy girl through and through! Seems I but what appeals to me at the moment! This book looks intriguing!

My stash is chock-full of blues!

I have a lot of greens and browns in my stash which surprises me because pinks and purples are my favorite colors. Or maybe that's not such a surprise. Maybe I have a lot of greens and browns because I use most of my pinks and purples. Thanks for an opportunity to see one of the projects from the book live. I love how yours came out.

My stash color is green. Love your red quilt!

Blue - I don't know why I have so much blue but I love it. This would be a great quilt to use some of that up. Love the red though. I need to be more bold with color.

Fabulous job and I love the red, which is unusual for me, I'm more of a green and blue fan. I also have gobs of leftover pink from some quilts in the past!

Your quilt is fabulous. I have a lot of blue in my stash. I use it all the time.

I love the quilt! Most prevalent color in my stash is green with blue coming in a close second. I think I'm going to have to try this quilt. Have a great jelly roll to use in it. Thanks for offering the book.

I mostly turn to kaffe fassett's bright colors when i make a quilt. those colors brighten up any dreary day.

barbaradougherty126 said...

the most prominent color in my stash is blue (and green really) and it is just because I have more scraps of them. So I guess I do use them, lol.

Crissy said...

Wow! It turned out great! My stash is heavy on gray and yellow just because I'm drawn to it and use those colors often.

I don't have a very big stash yet! So no dominant color . Your quilt is gorgeous. thanks for the giveaway

shaka said...

Beautiful quilt! I'm still pretty new at quilting and am building my stash. I think blue is the most prominent color there right now but they are all such different tones of blue.

artsycraftsyivy said...

Low-volumes--white or cream with other colors in there. I seem to collect them.

Unknown said...

I love red and white quilts and yours turned out super fun! It's also the perfect pattern for a 2-color quilt! I collect red fabrics myself and make a lot of red and white quilts, but the color I have most in my stash is green. It's my favorite color. I usually make at least one green quilt a year and love displaying them during March. And I am not even Irish!LOL

I recently reorganized my stash and was surprised to find blue as the dominant color --- all shades and tones. I think I don't use it as much now as I used to. Thanks for the give-away!

Thanks for the giveaway, your red quilt is beautiful. I need this book.

I have lots of blue in my stash, too. I always seem to have blue on my mind when I browse at the quilt shop. I love your red quilt! I need to be bold as well.

Your red quilt is beautiful. I have been collecting reds to make a red quilt but don't seem to have a pattern yet. I would love to win the book. Thanks.

My stash is filled with blues...why I never use it, i don't know, since I love the color! But I adore your red quilt!

I collected aqua, real and lime green gorgeous one quilt and now have made two. With a box of yardage left!

Your red quilt is bold and beautiful. Blue, especially aqua, is my favorite, but it doesn't stick around too long in my stash.

My go to color is lime-green, the new neutral. I am drawn to it like a moth to light. Thanks for the chance!

My stash seems to be mostly blues.

I seem to have lots of pinks (courtesy of my 6 year old daughter!) which I use a lot (for her) and I was gifted a lot of blues from my neighbor (which I need to find a use for). I love that red quilt- amazing!

Havplenty said...

I do love your red quilt as I love reds anyway. I have plenty of reds and yellows in my stash as I was using these colors predominately in a long term quilt project. Though I love blues, surprisingly I had very few in my stash.

love your quilt, very happy. the colors i have the most of are aqua (goes in everything i make) and very light beige for backgrounds. thanks for the giveaway.

Love your choice of red for this quilt. That use to be my most popular color, but I think I've used most of it. Now gray seems to take up the most space, but that may be because I buy it in larger pieces.

Judy in Michigan said...

Your quilt is awesome times 10!! Elegant! Good job! Now that I think about it, red seems to be the dominant color in my stash! and most are geometrics. Hope I win the book...thank you so much!

Ann D said...

That must have been a fun quilt to make. The reds are wonderful.

I seem to have more blues in my stash then followed by yellows. I think it must be that whatever fabric I have on hand doesn't seem to fit the project I'm working on. Perhaps I should make something blue and yellow?

Who wouldn't love a red quilt! My stash has a substantial amount of about every color except purple and brown.
