Lines by Design blog hop

Today I'm happy to be a stop on my friend Debbie's blog tour for her new book, Lines by Design Quilts. This book is so true to Debbie's clean, graphic and straightforward style. The book contains 17 fun projects--in various sizes--to sew and inspire. It's a beautiful book!
The bar chart quilt caught my eye immediately. I've thought about making something similar to this for a long time, but I never had enough vision to follow through. For that reason, I was more than happy to give this pattern a try. It's much better than I could have done on my own!
I've had this red jelly roll in my stash for years, so I was thrilled to finally have a reason to sew it up! I pulled various fabrics from my stash to round things out. I am not good at following directions, or counting, apparently, so I had to add an additional fabric to the mix about half way though....but that's pretty typical for me! Ha!
Sewing with jelly rolls is messy. Yikes! I bet I will be vacuuming up red fuzz for the rest of the year...but it was totally worth it. I LOVE how the quilt turned out. LOVE it!
I was worried that some of the darker red prints that I pulled would blend into the background too much, but I think it turned out to be the perfect balance. Hurray! (And phew!)
When it came time to quilt it, I decided to do a small stipple in the background. I quilted loopy L's in the printed strips. I also changed thread colors for the strips: some were quilted in red thread, some were quilted in white thread. It required me to bury quite a few knots, but it was time well spent. I love how the stippling unifies the background strips. This quilt will be texture-iffic once it is washed!
The ovals print (on the left) was the last minute addition to the quilt. I'm glad I had to add one more fabric, because it introduced another scale of print to the quilt. It needed it!
It has been awhile since I machine bound a quilt, but this one was a good candidate for it! 3 out of the 4 corners turned out beautifully. I suppose that's the best I could ask for. :)
The backing was a very deliberate choice. I wanted something that would camouflage both the red and white threads. This definitely did the trick! (The backing, binding, ovals and one of the red polka dot fabrics are all from my good neighbors fabric line.)
The finished quilt is about 60" x 78" or so. I was tempted to make a few of those strips scrappy, but I resisted. Aren't you surprised? :) Red is a bold choice for the background, but I couldn't love it any more. I need to go bold more often!

(The red background fabric is Moda Bella Solid (9900-JR 16).)
Since this is a blog hop, Debbie and her publisher are giving away a copy of the book to one of my readers! If you would like to win, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I would love to hear what color of fabric is most prominent in your stash. (Is it because you always use it? Or is it because you never use it?) The contest is open to everyone! A hard copy will be sent to a US resident OR a digital copy will be sent to a resident outside of the US. I will pick a winner in a few days!

Oh! And feel free to visit the other stops on the blog tour to see more of the book:

I'm long on yellow. Because I have a very old yellow and white quilt my great grandmother made.

Blue is my favorite so I usually have some scraps left over from most of my projects. Really excited about this book. I have been wanting to make a modern quilt. Thanks.

I thought for sure my answer would be orange because I love using orange and seem to always be using it. NOPE, I peekin my walk in closet and start looking around and its Purple! What the heck? How did I end up with this much purple? Ugh. Obviously its built up because I do nkt use it as much. Looks like Grandma will be making some purple stuff for her grandbabies for a bit, lol. I am glad you made me SEE my closet and my stash for what it is. A purple mess. eeep.

Love your quilt! My stash has more green. Total surprise to me too!

Love your quilt. Have a jelly roll with flip flops. Seems like a good pattern for it.

I love blue. There is a lot in my stash, but I like to use it!

I love your red quilt, but mine would be orange! Orange is the most prominent color in my stash. I LOVE it and have to MAKE myself NOT use it in every quilt I make. The book looks like a great one.

cool quilt want to try it

I have too much green now, I think. I collected so many batiks and I have been working on other projects. Thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net

I always think those strip quilts just won't be pretty but then I see one and think, I need to make one of those, they are so pretty. LOL. I have a lot of greens because I can't walk by a patch of green squares, strips, or charms without picking one up. I just love green. Your strip quilt in red is divine. I love it. I think I need to make one in green! Surprise surprise.

Sewgirl said...

Love your red quilt! I am a blue/green kind of stash collector. Thanks for sharing the giveaway!

Karen said...

Red is very prominent in my stash. I do use it, but not enough apparently! Maybe I need to make a quilt like yours but reverse the prints and the solid.

Lisa C said...

Ha! I think I had that same red jelly roll on my shelf for at least three years. I bought it and it was a bit too dark for what I wanted so it just sat there...until about a month ago. I thought I'd be picking up red fuzz for years. Love this quilt!

I have lots of BLUE in my stash because I love it, so I use it a lot!

Mary C said...

The most prominent color in my stash is blue. I have been gifted many, many yards of fabric and guess the givers liked blue. :) The book looks awesome!

Crafty Coffin said...

Great quilt! I seem to have a awful lot of blue fabric, probably because I go to make something and think oh, that's to aqua, that's too navy, etc and keep buying more.

I have a lot of blues and mainly floral prints mainly as they are my favourite !

Love your quilt. My stash colors are about equal but I do love to throw some yellow or turquoise in most things. Thanks for the giveaway chance of such a lovely book.

Diane Beavers said...

Oranges are prominent, and not being used. Looking for that moment of inspiration:) Perhaps Lines by Design will do it for me. Thanks for sharing. I
Love your Good Neighbors backing and all your reds on front DO play very well together.
Awaiting you book!

I have a ton of brown in my stash because it is my favourite colour... but since I mostly make things for other people it doesn't get used much :)

Karen said...

What a great quilt--and maybe beginner friendly? I have loads of aqua and turquoise--but I'm thinking I need some more red! Thanks so much for the giveaway, Amanda Jean.

margaret said...

Love the red and white, great quilt. Blue is the winner in my stash as it is now the most heavily used and thus must be replaced, before i run out!

Sue Laufer said...

Amanda...quick question. I'm just finishing a Scrap Vortex quilt. Gotta love it. I'm wondering if you would give me some suggestions on quilting it. I'm new to FMQ tho so nothing difficult! :)

Blue blue blue because I love it and I always use it.

Dawna said...

Your quilt is beautiful! Teal in all shades seems to be the most prominent color in my stash. I do use it often in my aprons and drawstring bags, but I guess I always replenish what I use because there sure is a lot of it on the shelves :)

Green prevails. Love your version of the quilt! Looks like a super book.

I'm drawn to aqua and turquoise so my stash is busting at the the seams (ha!) with it!

BengalPup said...

The other day I organized all my fabric and realized all the blue that is in my fabric. I have no purple and I am guessing this is because I always use it. I'm not sure why I have a lot of blue, but it goes with everything!

FlourishingPalms said...

I love the graphic-ness of the quilt you made. So effective! And in a simple, beautiful color palette. Of course, I have lots of aquas in my stash, but that's intentional because I keep using it in my projects - over and over. It's my favorite go-to fabric color to stash. My second favorite fabric color is orange. Thanks for the chance to win the book!

Dody said...

I would say green . It's my favorite and I always use it. Thank you for the chance to win such an awesome book.

This is so interesting. Last fall I made a quilt top that is somewhat similar with print background and solid strips. I have been stairs at it wondering how to quilt it, I love how yours turned out and agree that when it is washed it will be wonderful. I think I am ready to finish mine up now. It was so helpful to see the results of your project. Thank you for sharing this and for providing so much inspiration.

Years ago I had lots of earth tone colors in my stash. Now, I'm much more interested in bright modern colors and prints. I don't know if there is a predominant color but there is very little purple. Not a fan of purple quilts! Thanks for the give away!

Mary Marcotte said...

Oh Wow on the red quilt. How very pretty. I like those clean lines, a copy of Debbie's book is going on my wishlist! I have tons of blue. I use them often, but they just sort of keep multiplying. I supposed I can't resist when I visit my LQS!

I'm a blue person but I love Red and White quilts. I have one in the plans right now.

Silvia LGD (Little Green Doll) said...

This books looks great! Red and orange is the prominent colour in my stash :)

Great quilt! I think I do have a lot of aqua and teal blues in my stash, shortly followed by pinks. I love the colors. I have little purple - and avoid using my green unless is a sunny, limey spring green :)

Mary W Quilts said...

Love the quilt. My most dominant color is pink! Just because I love it😊

Heather J said...

I think it is a toss up between orange and purple as the dominant colours in my stash! Love the red quilt!

I have more red fabric than anything else,I have a red and cream quilt planned, but I also keep using it for other projects too.

I love that quilt. It's just what I had in mind for a jelly roll of my own.
My stash has a huge pile of Aqua lime and grey I'm stock piling for some ideas floating in my head.

Unknown said...

I really like the vibrancy of the quilt in red. My stash has lots of pinks, but I've started to gather assorted purples. I guess I never could make up my mind between pink and purple. Even as a child. My bedroom was painted hyacinth because I couldn't make up my mind between pink and purple.

Mary said...

I have waaay too much blue & need to add other colors! ZippyQuilts (at) gmail

Amy said...

Turquoise is my color. I have a lot of it because I don't use it. May have to give this quilt a try in that color.

SarahZ said...

I love your version of this quilt!!!! I *need* to make a bold background quilt! My limited stash is pretty well balanced, but I do have more red than I use..... :)

Debbie said...

Love your quilt. This book looks fun. Thanks

CraftyBeth said...

I "thought" I had a lot of reds in my stash, but recently I was cleaning up my sewing area and putting scraps into bins. I had to move the GREEN bin twice because I had so much! Who knew? My foyer is green, my living room is green, and my dining room is green. I also have a mint green guest bedroom! Now I know too!

Kathy said...

Hmmm-not really sure which color is most prevalent. I'm gonna guess blues, but I'm not sure. Actually - probably whites since I use them a lot for borders, etc. Love your quilt!!

OMG - WOW - Beautiful work - thanks for sharing.

I don't really have a dominant color in my stash... what I have are way too many novelty prints. They are a weakness of mine. Thanks for the giveaway and the chance to win!

i have the most blue in stash because i love it!

The most prevelant color in my stash is blue -- my stash is accumulated through what others give me and clothing I cut up, so it's not either one of you two options! Just what happens to be coming in... sarah@forrussia.org

Wow! What a nice quilt....not sure I'd have the courage to use all red!
Love Debbie's quilts! My 1st (and only so far) quilts were using patterns of hers!
My small stash is mostly black and white prints and a bunch of jewel tones (left over from my 2nd quilt).
That's because I love those colors!

Such a gorgeous quilt (but then, I have 5 red and white WIPs and UFOs)!!! Red is definitely the most prominent color in my stash ~ it's my favorite color. I just can't resist buying red fabric. ;)

I seem to buy blue & more blue....

Sandra Walker said...

The most prominent in my stash is blue. That is because it is my favourite colour. I LOVE your red quilt, and I recognized your fabrics right away! :-) Great finish, and this looks like a terrific book...man there are too many squirrels in QBL (Quilting Blog Land) these days...

Emily said...

I think gray. I love how it goes with so many colors! I love your quilt. Red so so cheery!

Bethany said...

This is lovely and has me thinking about making a red/white quilt (as if I need another quilting project going on!) My stash has pretty equal amounts of blues and greens (and the colors in between blue and green.) I think I'm mostly drawn to those colors. I use them a lot but I also hoard some of my favorites. One of the things I'm trying to do this year is add in more oranges and purples intentionally. Those are the colors I have the least amount of!

Lisa England said...

I have lots of blue. I love it, I buy it often, I do use it. Powder blue, aqua, navy, royal blue, indigo -- there is a lot of blue stuff to choose from!

Teagan said...

Love how your quilt turned out! Purple is probably the most prominent color in my current stash. It's my favorite color, but I don't like how it plays with many of my other fabrics!

Kim said...

I love the clean lines of the quilts I've seen in this book thus far, and blue is the most common colour in my stash, because it's my favourite, and you can't go wrong with a good navy blue!

quiltzyx said...

Love your red & white rendition of this quilt! I love the graphic look of it. I've been wanting to do something similar for a long time too, but have just been too lazy to do the math!!
My stash has a LOT of blues, from aqua to navy and most everything in between - just like my closet!!

amy dame said...

i have so much pink in my stash, and almost as much aqua - they're my two favourites by far. i think i actually have more yellow though, because i collected a ton for a specific project, and then rarely used it after that.

right now i'm working on an applique project with shades of red, so i especially love the way your quilt turned out!

Christine @ 12,450miles said...

I love blog hops because it's so fun to see these quilts come to life by artists I admire! (Like you!) The most prominent color in my stash is aqua/teal-ish blue. But that's probably because I've been hoarding it for years with plans for an "X plus" quilt. Guess it is time to start sewing?! Off to add this to my Amazon wish list!

Jessica said...

Your quilt is so fun! My most prominent color is teal because I adore it and use it all the time. :)

Fran said...

Your quilt is fantastic, love it! Blue is my favourite colour & unsurprisingly is the best represented colour in my stash. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of Debbie's awesome book.
