Welcome to finish it up Friday!
Well, I did it! I finished a big quilt this week and man, it feels good. This twin size quilt is called Ladder Leap. A big thank you goes out to Cindy for giving it a great name!
I designed this quilt to be sewn up in my good neighbors fabric, but the fabric wasn't available when I was designing and testing it, so I used Kona cottons for the first go round. Once I sewed up the quilt and knew the measurements were accurate, I set the top aside and it hung out on the WIP pile for a good 5 months or so. Sometimes they need to marinate there, I guess!
I knew it would be impossible to pick a single thread color for this quilt, and an all over quilt pattern just wouldn't do, so I quilted the elements differently. I chose a free motion loop-de-loop for the background and straight line quilting-in 8 different thread colors-for the blocks. (I used this technique to bury my thread ends for all the starts and stops.) All of the quilting was done on my Juki. I enjoy being able to quilt my own quilts on my home machine, but let me tell you, I was a sore for a few days!
I am always looking for ways to use up scraps and adding some on the back never gets old. It was a bit of a risk to use all solids on the back, because there is no room to hide less than perfect quilting stitches...and I prefer to have a safety net at all times. :) But in the end, I think it worked well!
I really like the texture that the quilting adds, even to the back.
I auditioned a lot of different binding options-I even got the family involved in helping me choose. In the end, we picked the good neighbors gray stripe. It finishes off the quilt amazingly well! I like how it ties the different grays used on the front and back together.
I cut my binding at 2.25" for this quilt, so it's a little thinner than my normal 2.5" binding, but I love how it works on here! It was an absolute delight to hand stitch down.
The quilt measures 64" x 88". My middle son is trying his hardest to claim it for his very own, but that hasn't been decided yet. It's nice to know that this quilt will be well used and loved!
I slept under it last night and I give it my seal of approval, too. :)
Pattern: Ladder Leap (available in my Craftsy shop)
Finished Size: 64" x 88"
Fabrics: Solids are Kona Cottons in Steel (background), Snow (block borders), Kumquat, Capri, Ash, Limelight, Lime, Corn Yellow, Buttercup, Cyan (blocks) and medium gray (backing).
The binding is silver lining two toned stripe from Good Neighbors.
One BIG announcement that I am excited to share, Connecting Threads now ships to the UK and to Australia!!! So, if you live in either of those countries and you want to get your hands on a bundle of good neighbors fabric, you can, as of this week! They are offering free shipping on orders over $75, too.
If you'd like to win a chance at a free Ladder Leap PDF pattern, leave me a comment in this post. In your comment, I'd love to hear what you plan to do this weekend! I'll pick a few winners in a few days.
Ok, now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you for joining me for finish it up Friday! I hope you have a great weekend!

Oh my goodness, this is so fantastic!!! I love the color combo you have used and the design is just fabulous!!! And your quilting just totally adds to the design!!! Such a fun finish and even more fun that you slept under it last night. It is so good to use our quilts ;)
Beautiful! This is a great design and it will look great in your Good Neighbors fabric as well!
Great pattern--I'm surprised you let it sit so long before finishing up--it's a winner! And I would love to win the pattern!
There are so many things I could write about this lovely finish, but I'm particularly taken with your FMQ swirls. I aspire to such swirls!
What a lovely finish this week. The colours are great. Love your quilting. I can't believe you did all the loop de loops on your home machine! This weekend we have lots of rugby from the World Cup to watch, a Sunday dinner to go to and lots of studio time for me (well that's the plan!)
Gorgeous design and execution! The colors are so beautiful - can I get in line to claim the quilt? :-)
Love this quilt! Recently moved so working on home improvements this weekend. Hoping to fit just a bit of sewing time in! I made sure that my sewing space was first on the list of rooms settled when we moved!
Take good care-
Elizabeth
(blogged years back as HobbyMommy!)
The quilting is beautiful and such a compliment to this fun pattern, Amanda Jean. Love that light grey striped binding. Congratulations on a fantastic finish!
Great quilt, and I'd love to see it in the Good Neighbors fabrics! This weekend: Saturday, visit my daughter at college and watch her play in a soccer game; Sunday, church and maybe a hayride. Hopefully, a little sewing time tonight.
Enjoy reading your blog; Ladder Leap quilt is a beauty. My daughter is coming home from college for the weekend. The weekend will go by too quickly.
The quilt is beautiful! And I absolutely love the loopy quilting!
Lovely quilt and great job with the quilting!
Home improvements for us. Hoping to pick out a new front door this weekend.
I love how your Ladder Leap quilt turned out. Your quilting certainly makes the quilt. It is inspiring to know you quilt all your own quilts. This weekend, I am planning on starting to quilt my largest quilt flimsy that has been waiting to be quilted for over a year. It is large King size. I first have to figure out where to baste this monster. Maybe strip down our king mattress? I am hoping to make it a big Friday quilt finish for next week as I have my big 50th birthday on Friday. Thanks for keeping Finish It Friday up and going. It is one of my favorites.
This is so pretty! Great quilting too.
I like machine quilting.
This weekend is a bit of a downer with a memorial service for a beloved family member. :(
gorgeous quilt, as usual :). Love how you quilted it, it looks fantastic!!!
I love the finish. The binding is a subtle contrast and packs a great punch. I think it's swell that your kids fight for your quilts. Yay!
I get to go zip lining this weekend. Whee!!!
I absolutely love this quilt. I need to make one! Hope I win the pattern.
What a pretty quilt!! I would love to win the pattern for it... thanks so much for the chance. This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving so I'll be busy in the kitchen. Today we're making Harvard Beets and Pickled Beets and the Cranberry sauce. Tomorrow I'll be making rolls and pies. And then on Sunday we'll be cooking the turkey and the rest of the fixings.
Love it! This weekend I will be hand sewing the binding on a sports-themed quilt that is my husband's 25th wedding anniversary gift. I also hope to create the label and sewing the backing for a Hungry Caterpillar baby quilt.
It's so beautiful, Amanda! Good call on the binding fabric - it's perfect! I always cut my binding at 2.25" and I like how snugly that fits around the edge of the quilt. This weekend I'm hoping to start quilting a project for Make Modern magazine...nothing like a deadline to keep me on task :)
Very nice quilt! I really like it. Thanks for the chance to win! I recently received my order of "Good Neighbors" and it is even prettier in person!
Love the pattern and would love to win a copy of it! It's Thanksgiving here in Canada and I'll be eating some dinners with family and maybe winterizing our RV in between bites.
This weekend I will be making my modern quilt group challenge item. The reveals are happening at Thursday's meeting.
I love that you were able to use some of your Good Neighbors fabric on the quilt after all. The stripy binding mimics the ladders and was perfect. This weekend I will actually be teaching a beginning FMQ class at my LQS. Thanks!
The quilt looks amazing! I really like quilting loops, too, and the binding does set the quilting off wonderfully. It is great you had the top put aside long enough you were able to use some Good Neighbors fabric for the binding. I plan to do a bunch of secret sewing this weekend; hopefully I can get close to putting binding on myself!
Great quilt and love the name! I think I'll be making a binding with leftover bits for a BQ quilt on my horizon similar to how you pieced yours stripes together on the back. Just lovely and so colorful, nicely done.
This is a great guy quilt, graphic, colorful and fun. Surrender it to your son, you won't regret it. Your thread choices and quilting designs are inspirational. It makes me think that I can do this on my home machine too. Thanks!
I love the simplicity of this quilt.
We have a super full weekend lined up, Renaissance Faire tomorrow and the zoo on Monday. Hopefully I'll be able to squeeze in some sewing time and finish up my daughter's Princess Peach Halloween costume.
The husband and I just adopted a dog, so we'll be having bonding time for sure! And my baby cousin is having a birthday party too, so that will be fun. :)
I love the darker background it really makes the white and colours pop. I need to do some more FMQ so I can get to your neatness level!
Beautiful loop-de-loop quilting, lovely contrasting textures. Great quilt design and execution, as always.
Love this quilt pattern! I will be working this weekend (and not on something fun...) but since I only work weekends, I can't really complain :-) Thanks for the giveaway.
Great pattern and great finish! Good quilting and binding choice.
Wspaniała narzuta!
Pozdrawiam serdecznie:)
I love your quilt! I don't enjoy burying all my thread ends after quilting, but I love sewing down my bindings by hand. This weekend my son is coming home (to Texas) from college (in Michigan) for fall break. I plan to hang out with him as much as he'll let me!
tstanulis@verizon.net
Love the variety of colours in the quilt.
I am going on a ladies retreat with my church this weekend. I am really looking forward to getting away and just hanging out with friends.
Great new pattern! We have a wedding this weekend and then the Packer game!!
As a Southern Hemispherer my weekend has already started. I'm heading south to a town even smaller than my own to try and find the final fabric I need for a baby quilt (bright orange doesn't seem like a popular colour in these parts!). While I'm there I'll buy some wadding for my sixteen year old daughter's first quilt. She should finish her top today and we hope to get it to sandwich stage. She's making a baby quilt too - let's just say there's going to be a very late addition to the family!
Love this quilt, and I think it would be great in Good Neighbors fabric, too. I don't worry about whether wobbles in quilting show on the back anymore--washing covers up lots of little errors. I use your method of tying off threads (usually waiting until I end a thread before tying off both beginning and ends). I must have learned it from you. Sometimes I feel like it's tedious, but when I've backstitched or used tiny stitches to start and stop, I always notice those spots, so I think the tying is worth the time.
What a wonderful quilt! I love the solid fabrics on the front and back ad I am always partial to a striped binding. :-) I love this time of year and am going apple picking with my grandchildren this weekend. Of course I also hope to sneak in some quilting time as well, but we'll see.
I love this quilt with the solid fabric! This weekend will be out last week of soccer games for 2015. We have four boys, and I'm looking forward to getting some time on Saturdays back.
That is a really great quilt! I love how the colors really pop against the gray background. This weekend will be traveling up to the NY Finger Lakes for some wine tasting and checking out the bursts of color in the leaves. Maybe we can stop at a fabric store too - fingers crossed!
Your new pattern is very striking. This weekend I plan to do the carpool thing for ballet class and wash windows. Hopefully I get some sewing time in!
I can see why it's an on the request list in your home. It is stunning. Would love a chance to win the pattern. In between hanging with out of town relatives I hope to make a fabric postcard or two for an upcoming swap.
Oh what a gorgeous finish!! I love the way the ladders pyramid up and I'm not surprised it's popular for snuggling under!
Such a gorgeous quilt!! Wow!
This weekend other then work I plan (read hope ^^) to finish a table runner I've been working on as well as go to an opening party for a club here in St. Julians =)
Beautiful quilt! This weekend we'll be heading out to pick a pumpkin. And if my connecting threads order gets here, I'll be sewing with new Good Neighbors fabric! Keeping fingers crossed for that.
Ladder Leap looks like a great pattern with lots of different looks depending on the fabrics. I have several quilting projects at the top of the list for this weekend. Guild project due in November, Guild project due in December, I am quilting a sweatshirt and I need to prep some hexes for travel to Texas this upcoming week. I don't seem to lack in projects to pick from.
I love the colors in this quilt!
Hoping to head to a craft show this weekend at a local creamery and dinner with friends. Maybe some sewing on Sunday if I get lucky. Hard to squeeze in with a 2 year old and a 4 year old.
Your quilt is quite striking! I plan on organizing my bedroom after just giving it a coat of grey paint!
I love this quilt and am sure you'll make a scrappy version at some point! Would love a chance to win and make one of my own. This weekend I'm headed to a local quilt guild quilt show where I have two quilts (and keeping my fingers crossed maybe now hanging there with a ribbon!?!?!??!?!)..... THanks for a chance to win! Love your new fabric line as well1
Beautiful quilt! I am hosting our Jr. high & High School youth group this Saturday night for dinner and singing. Jmshelley1@yahoo.com
I love this pattern! Thanks for the giveaway. I am painting our house..yuck! !! Cant wait to be done so I can get back to sewing! !
Your quilt is lovely :)
I'm VERY excited to hear that CT ships to Australia now, that's huge news! It's still not New Zealand but it's a lot closer and it means that I can actually get some of your fabric! Yay!!
Would love to win this pattern...gorgeous!! This weekend, I will be seeing family. happy Thanksgiving
so pretty love the colors...would love to win this pattern. i think it will look great with your new fabric...this weekend i plan to start my shades of gray quilt...love the binding just might have to use on my next quilt
Such a beautiful quilt, Amanda Jean! Love your use of colors, and the quilting is perfect.
I don't usually like quilts done in all solids, but I really like this one! It is beautiful!
What a stunning quilt!! It will be phenominal in your new fabric line!! Hmm, now I know what to add to my list!! X!
I love this new quilt - and since I live in Canada (on the eastern coast) it is Thanksgiving. I plan to eat turkey.
Another beautiful pattern and quilt!!! Love it in solids too. Your gray stripe is the perfect binding! I have great plans for the weekend...visiting my grandson! Hope you have great plans too!
Ladder Leap is beautiful. I'm going to suggest it to my guild for our next charity quilt. And speaking of charity quilts, our guild is getting together on Sunday to put our current charity quilt together. I just love hanging with my quilty friends! Thanks for the giveaway!
I love your quilt!
We just visited one of our temples today, and tomorrow we're going to a hockey game! Opening game of the season. :)
I love the pattern, the contrast and the simplicity of the design. This weekend I plan to sew a Halloween costume for the grandbaby and keep working on a scrap vortex. I hope your weekend will be just as fun!
It's really great. Love the way you quilted it. The back is great and the striped binding finishes it beautifully!
Beautiful pattern! This weekend I am attaching bindings. Not my favorite step, but then the quilts are done!
Lovely quilt, great pattern! This weekend is Canadian Thanksgiving and our local fair. My son is in the parade, the other son playing hockey--I am looking forward to the fair (and hoping my socks won a prize!) Turkey on Sunday, a nice walk to see the fall colours too ;-)
Great design and gorgeous colours. Great to know we can now order your fabric for delivery to Australia. I'm so impressed with your quilting. Just completed a FMQ workshop recently and I'm hooked.
First, deliver a quilted baby quilt for my soon to be born grandson at my daughter in laws baby shower! Try to relax, how I don't know, kids coming for dinner Sunday, and finishing up a t-shirt quilt. Thank goodness I have a 4 day weekend! ✂️❤️✂️
Great design and wonderful quilting!
This weekend we will be finishing up tiling the bath tub surround we started in August. NEVER thought it would take sooooo long, but it is going to be gorgeous. I haven't been able to sew for months and am desperate to get back to quilting! Love your quilt!
Love this quilt! This weekend we're having a birthday party for my son who turned 11 this week - a trip to the arcade with friends, pizza at our house, and a Doctor Who marathon/sleepover. Should be fun!
I love the crispness of this design and the colors. It's no wonder that your son has claimed it as his! I'm making a little quilt in fall colors tomorrow since I'm taking a big stitch quilting workshop on Sunday and I need to bring a top already sandwiched. Just a thought - your quilt would be great as a mini, too. I'd love to win the pattern. Thanks for sharing!
Esta colcha está linda, bem apropriada para homem. Entretanto, trocando a cor de fundo, pode ser bem jovial, uma ideia linda para usar as sucatas, adorei.
Seus trabalhos sempre lindos, obrigada
Marlene Carpes
Love the quilt. It will be wonderful in your new fabric line, as well. I am hoping to organize my sewing space this weekend, and cut out a few projects.
I love this quilt! I really think it's one of my favourite on your site (and you have so many good ones). This weekend I'm finishing a Kristoff costume I'm making for my son. Why does Disney not make Frozen dress-up for boys? And then we're all off to the madness of a Frozen 3 year old's birthday party
I plan on hand sewing the binding on a baby quilt while our family watch the car racing on TV noblequilts@gmail.com.au
Your quilt is delightful, as is the quilting. I can't seem to let go of using prints, big ones, so I'd probably use Kaffe fabrics with this pattern. They would really show well. Tonight my DH and my granddaughter, who is visiting on her college break, and I are going to our wonderful playhouse to take in a good comedy.
Great quilt and great pattern.
love everything about this quilt you must be so pleased with it
After leading a book discussion group this morning and working this afternoon, I plan to chill and hopefully cheer my favorite Chicago Cubbies on to victory. Tomorrow plan a whole afternoon of scrappy sewing making a fall table runner. Love your colors and also finding myself incorporating lots of gray as a neutral. Beautiful quilt and cool your son is lobbying so hard for it.
Love the colors and the quilting. Great job.
Great way to use some of my solid stash! Gorgeous quilt!
I am going to finish the cleaning and then take my daughter to her favorite pet boutique where she will use the gift card she received for her birthday to get one of our dogs a birthday present. She is excited and so am I! We will also finish another Farmer's Wife block together.
My daughter and 8month old granddaughter are spending the weekend while daddy is dove hunting. So we are playing today, then we have a wedding to attend tonight, and tomorrow we have a family birthday dinner for our son. A full weekend! Unfortunately no sewing!
Your design makes a fun quilt that will work for any age or sex. thanks for the chance to win a pattern. mfhagopian@aol.com
I am trying to finish up two WIPs at I started ore than 20 years ago. One is autumn leaves and the other a quilt with flying geese borders and an appliqués loon in the center. This was probably started 30 years ago when I still lived in MN and heard the loons regularly!
Amanda Jean, I knew I'd love Ladder Leap finished as much as unfinished in your first post about it. I'm w/your middle son...claim it now !
This weekend seeking out two Octoberfest festivals for the first time, hunting for some BIG Honeycrisp apple (ones in stores are so small this year) and finishing up a very special baby quilt.
Thank you for sharing.

I am inspired by the purity and simplicity of modern designs. This pattern makes me feel that perhaps I could do some of my own quilting on my own WIP quilt tops. I've only recently started following your blog, but I have to say I look forward to every new post that pops up in my inbox and I would love to win this pattern!
It is a beautifully designed and completed quilt! I know it thrills you that son so eagerly wants it for his own too. I have nephews that are like that on the few quilts I've made. They appreciate the product of of your skill and time. Thanks for a chance to win this pattern.
I think this quilt is a winner!!! (I hope I am too!!) The quilt would be perfect for anyone - it's graphic and cool. I really need to make this quilt. A+
the quilt is great and the binding is perfect!
Really like your quilt. If I win it I think I will try it with Good Neighbor fabric. We are having a hamburger fry today at our pond with friends and family.
The simplicity of this design is great, and I can see why your son is anxious to claim it as his own. I'm finishing up a plus sign quilt this weekend for my grandson (fast and easy for a toddler who is hard on his blankets!), as well as getting together supplies for the new canine addition coming to our family next week. Thank you for the giveaway opportunity!
I love your FMQ on this one. I just ordered a sewing table so I can drop my machine down and I hope my quilting improves. Being able to see my stitches should make a difference! I am working on a few small bags this weekend for Christmas presents and hope to finish one for my niece this weekend. Have a great weekend everyone!
I plan to attend a Harvest flea market and continue to lightly starch
2" squares for a quilt I plan to make for my sister.
Thanks
I plan to sew on my Scrappy Trip quilt this week-end. I spent the last 3 days looking for flooring for the kitchen. Love that quilt. I'm not a sold fabric person but I could be for that pattern easy. Thanks, for your giveaways. Nancy P.
I love your quilt, the colors are fantastic and your pattern is great for setting them off. Thank you for the chance to win a copy. Hugs,
Love the quilt. This weekend will be full of yard work. I will be cleaning out flower beds getting them ready for winter.
Love this pattern! It looks great in the solids, and your striped binding is a perfect finish. I'm planning to get a quilt top basted today and attend a guild meeting tomorrow.
This is so beautiful. I love how the colors work together with the grey(?) background.
I'm almost finished piecing a strip to use in the backing of a quilt for my great-nephew.
Your quilting has given me ideas on how to quilt it once I've got it all together.
Thank you for sharing!
I love your quilt and I just read your technique for burying threads. That is a great visual tutorial and the best I've ever seen. Thanks so much!
Quilt and organizing my sewing space - that's on my schedule this weekend! YIPPEE! I've tried all week to get to my sewing/quilting projects, but it just didn't work out, so I've got a lot to catch-up to do. I love your new pattern, it's so clean and fresh looking. Thanks for offering it as a give away. ktsquiltdreams (at)gmail (dot)com
Working on my Super Mario quilt, and looking to cut out several quilts for my grandchildren. Christmas fast approaches and since I don't quilt my own quilts, I need to finish the piecing and get them to the LAQs. Sew much to do, sew little time. poladydwd(at)yahoo(dot)com
A fabulous finish Amanda Jean...love i!! I'm thinking like your son, I'd try to claim it too. This week I'm going to work on my batik quilt. Thanks for hosting the Finish it up Friday linky parties and for the chance to win ...I almost missed the party...way too much decluttering as we prepare to move back to Canada. Have a wonderful week, happy stitching!!!
Your Ladder Leap quilt is beautiful! I love the grey background and how it makes all the colors just glow! I enjoyed your story on how your son wants to claim it and you slept under it! So sweet! Your quilting and binding on it is perfect too!!!

Really love the strip of colour across the backing...would like to see how it makes up in a patterned fabric. If I were a winner I would certainly be giving it a try! Thanks for the opportunity.

I like the simplicity of the ladder block and your layout!
I especially love that your son has asked for the quilt.
Great use of scraps and solids. The quilting completely works. The binding though is probably my favorite on this quilt. Just compliments the entire look.
Love this new quilt! I already own almost all of your patterns and I just love to make your pillows! This weekend I'm working on finishing a lap quilt for my 86 year old aunt's birthday.
This weekend, we've got birthday parties, mini quilts, church, and baking. It's sounds just about right :)
This is adorable! My sister and i flew down to Clearwater Beach to spend the weekend on the beach. Thanks for a chance to win.
Wonderful that your son wishes to claim this as his own. He has great taste. I will be cooking Thanksgiving dinner this weekend for my family.
I'm making a potholder and some coasters for a hostess gift. And also I'm making the Pumpkin Table Runner from "diary of a quilter"'s tutorials.
I love your ladder-quilt. And it's perfect for boys and girls ! Sometimes I find it hard to find good patterns for boys ;-)
This weekend friends who live far away (like a 6 hour drive ) are visiting us. We don't see eachother often and it's nice to have such great friends close to me for a couple of days.
So no sewing for me this weekend !
THANK YOU Amanda Jean and Connecting Threads
am spending my weekend drooling over the entire connecting threads site
First thing in my basket is the Good Neighbors fabric FQ bundle!!
I love this pattern, and the binding fabric is just perfect! This weekend I am piecing a backing for a quilt our guild is making in memory of a member who died, so thinking of her while I sew.
Love it!
Such a gorgeous quilt! I think I'll have to give it a go :) Kona is so beautiful to work with.
That came out amazing! Sometimes we forget the power of solids! :)
Finishing a toddler quilt for my daughter....
Beautiful pattern. This weekend I spent time withy don that was visiting from out of state.
I finished the top of 1 charity quilt and i'm working on the second amid distractions from my kidos. I would love this pattern, I could use it for my boys.
Great colors & graphics on this one.
This weekend I spent time with friends, finished one more Happy Bowl w/ lid for an order I'm working on, and even worked a few hours at my part-time job! Tried to spend as much time as I could in cooler places as it's been over 100F for some days now. Ugh!
Love the quilt and the pattern.
Hey there! Well it's our Thanksgiving so I cooked dinner for 16 . Enjoy your week. Love this pattern
What s great all purpose pattern! I spent the weekend babysitting my 2 and 4 yr old granddaughters so their parents good have a long get away weekend. Much fun was had but Nana is tired!
It's a lovely pattern, and looks stunning in the fabrics you've used! I guess it would look fabulous in patterned fabrics too:) Would love an opportunity to win the pattern. I had a lovely time this weekend hosting a family dinner including 2 little ones who live in Australia (I'm in the UK), who I have made baby quilts for. X
Such a cute quilt! I'd love to win a free pattern. Thanks for the link to the tutorial on how to bury your knots when free motion quilting.
