mini nines

I have started a new scrap project.
A    l  o  n  g    term project.
I have been debating it for over a year.
I'm finally committing.
(And I'm blogging about it to keep me accountable.)
The pattern for the block can be found in this tutorial.
Each block will finish at 3.5".

If you'd like to join me, I would LOVE to have you along for this (somewhat) crazy journey.
My target quilt size is 63" x 77".
I will need a total of 396 blocks.
That's totally do-able, right?

I'm looking for a good name for this project.
If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Happy Monday to you!

These are so cute and tiny!!! I would call it Quarter to Nine because they are nine patches that are just bigger than a size of a quarter :)

Maybe call it like it is.... insanity. Looks really cute though!

Tiny-mini-niny? Okay - not that fancy, but anyway a cute play on words for a cute quilt pattern.
You ARE crazy, you know?!
Have fun!

better you than me!

High five- a high number of blocks and the solid small squares number 5. Great idea for a crib quilt!

No tiny quilt squares for me! But I admire you for taking on this project. A name for them--maybe Baby Nines. Good luck on your project.

This block is adorable! I'll have lots of little scraps after a project so I'm bookmarking it for later ;)

Oooh I love tiny blocks and long term projects! I'm glad you're doing this and I look forward to seeing it come together.

I'm going to be singing Tiny Tim now the rest of the day! Thanks, Teri ;)
I like mini nines for a name.

Crazy nines, that is for sure. And I really love it. And as I love all small projects, the tinier the better, I have to jump on. My first block will be ready in a weeks time.

I've been thinking the exact same thing since I saw your other post on them! I'll be calling mine Mini Madness!

I love this...and I am going to join you! I love small blocks, however, not all the time love making them. Smaller blocks produce a very interesting quilt.

I will get to work this week and have mine ready to show! Thanks for a great inspirational post!

LOVE. I am just finishing up a scrappy nine patch quilt top with about 120 blocks -- each block is 3.5 x 3.5. I've really enjoyed working on it.

Hurray! I love when you invite us to join along, although after block 200 or so, I may not be quite so enthusiastic, but we'll see. Thanks so much for the tutorial and the invite, I'm in!

It is SO doable! I have just done a little 3 inch square today and considered the prospect of doing a whole quilt in it. It was so adorable. Looks like you have made a great start. I would join you, but have plenty of LONG projects already ;) look forward to following your progress.

"9 WAYS TO SUNDAY".....not sure why, but it popped into my head. After all, your book is 'Sunday Morning Quilts'.....which I love by the way.

How beautiful......just yummy! I love it! Nine step to happiness. Have a great day! Marie

After making several of these for pincushions after your last post I know this is so insanely doable. So I guess I'm in. I don't know why but I am in. ;-}

Alicia said...

I think you should call it "The Checkers within" or just "Checkers" for short.

Sew and Sow Farm said...

"Scrappy to the Nines". as in "Dressed to the Nines". Or maybe you have never heard that saying. "To the nines" means to perfection.
or "Always on my Nines" lol..because you will always be (working) on your nines.

ok I'll go now.

Or how about - "9 to 5" as in Dolly's version.
Your working 9 to 5.
lol
ok....I am really leavin this time.

I would call it "Grains of Sand"!

Malinda said...

I'm just shaking my head. You could call it "Boredom" for the feeling you will get around block number 75. It really is cute, but I will just have to watch you make yours. Yup, Crazy Mom Quilts!

Mini mania? :) So cute!

Molly said...

Has anyone said tiny ninies yet? I love this little project and am seriously thinking of joining along. Hard to resist!

Kim said...

Dressed to the nines :0)

These look fun.....I do like tiny blocks. I'm working on a long time scrappy project of postage stamps using 1.5 inch squares.

Happy Sewing

Lisa said...

I would call it "Crazycakes" because that's what it is. And I might just join. I'm working on my first ticker tape now and have TONS of scraps.

Thimbleanna said...

YIPES! Those are adorable Crazy Mom!!!

Therese said...

How about," my nines made up" (like my minds made up,).

Trepmom said...

How about Stroke of Luck. All the talk of nines made me think of golfing... Crazy, huh. I know your quilt will turn out wonderful. Don't know if I have the patience for a long term project like that. Although I will probably make a few and will certainly follow you :)

Karen said...

How about "On Cloud Nine" because when you finish you'll be so happy you'll be in the clouds! Love the ambition and I will happily cheer you on to the finish! :)

Dara said...

My husband suggested the title 'crazy'...then I told him the name of your blog. What about Bit by Bit? The only quilt alongs I have ever done are two that you hosted. One is complete and being well loved by my daughter, the other is totally out of scraps top and back but yet to be quilted. I am not totally convinced that I would be on board for this one, maybe. They are so cute.

jenni said...

Fabulous, I will be watching this one, maybe join in a few months. The best part of this post is reading all the comments. Quilters are so clever. Maybe that should be your quilt name!

Turtlemoonimpressions said...

I'm in...very long term! How about Divine Nines. Or The Infinity Quilt.

I am sooooo loving this and crazy enough to join you!

this may be the cutest block I've ever seen, I'm going to try making one and see if I don't go crazy!

suemac said...

1" squares. Oh my. That is a heck of a lot of blocks. I admire your patience. With the amount of scraps I have that are teeny this would be a great quilt to start and do a little at a time.

Leigh Anne said...

My first thought when reading the tutorial was "Finally, a good way to use up all my snips and strings!" So I may join you as a LOOOOOOOONG term project LOL

You are going to love it when you are done! I have and antique quilt with nine patches this same size and I love it. I have "thought" about making my own version. HUMMM..... now you have got me going on that thought again. Might take me fifty years to finish. My word for the year was "Faithful" because I wanted to just be faithful in the little things of life. I Thought the piecing of little tiny blocks faithfully day by day would fit the bill. I had a pattern picked out.... but haven't started yet. I am filled with hopeful sewing projects.

How about naming your quilt ... Once upon an nine!

YOU CAN TOTALLY DO THIS ..... just be faithful. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm off to look for my pattern! Janita

elbquilts said...

Plain insane, but oh sew cool as well. Have to think about it for a day or two.

Unknown said...

"Part - Time Insanity". Yep, you are crazy! I made 2 of your pin cushions from your tutorial, cutest lil thing ever! Maybe you could make the nine patch just a tad bigger? Like 1.5" squares and then 1.5" border too, then you would end up with the same size block? Wow, you go girl!

JaideyBug said...

I think you should call it Nine Lives! It will probably take you nine lifetimes to finish it! Haha, just kidding. Knowing you, you'll be done in no time!

Lalitha said...

The name that came to me when i looked at the overall pattern was starbright. I really dont know if I have the patience to do this but would love to just follow along through your blog.

these are stunning, love how tiny and pretty they are. And I'm feeling I might be crazy enough to start my own, too. You're amazing.

The first thing I thought of we're Petit Fours, but that doesn't really work for nine squares. Petit Nines?

Unknown said...

Good luck!

I suggest FOREVER POSTAGE STAMP

Nita said...

How about...mini 9s! I think you already have a great name. :) Long term small projects are wonderful. Especially if you are going to hand-piece them. Hexis are not the only way to do small long term hand projects, and you mini 9s sound like just the thing. :) I have been working on an orange peel quilt for 2 years now and am not in a hurry to finish it. I work on it here and there. Sometimes months go by and sometimes I work on it for days at a time. Enjoy the process, miss mini-9s!

Pat said...

A good name would be "OMG 396". Wow, good luck to you. It is really neat. I wonder how long it will take you.

Dedra C said...

I love the first suggestion...quarter to nine.

Nichole said...

Love these, but don't think I'd have the patience to make them myself. Will enjoy watching yours grow. How about "Tiny Niney" for a name?

Qltr89 said...

Yikes! 3-inch finished squares, you're brave. I get it though, it's a great stash buster. You named it "mini nines", it fits perfectly. Have fun!

Kathleen said...

I would love to join you but I don't think I have the patience for this. Everyone has some very creative names for your endeavor though. I don't know how you will choose!

Hannah said...

This looks amazing! I am going to put one together and then decide if I'll do more ;-). Great, super crazy idea!! At least you're keeping up with your name!!

Marie said...

No, you're not crazy - far from it. This will be wonderful! Imagine the variety you can pull into it with that many pieces. I love tiny blocks and lots and lots of different fabrics - it's a combo that just creates so much depth. If I didn't have so many projects half finished I'd be joining you, but I dare not. Have fun with it.

Unknown said...

Soo cute and crazy project :-)

grann616 said...

You already have the name Crazy Mom's Quilt ! lol Sharon Lozano

Caroline said...

Crazy Nines.

Wish I could join! Really focused on my kids' quilts right now, but this looks like a fun one to take a whack at when I've got the scraps. It would make a really fun weighted quilt.

margaret said...

so many suggestions for a name, you will have a great time choosing one,. The block is far too small for me to tackle but will follow your journey and look forward to seeing it grow.

Mama Pea said...

The little nine patches remind me of travel checker board games. How about Travel Checkers? I dunno. Looks fun. I'll see if I can swing joining in. :-)

Elaine said...

Reminds me of Purina, sorry! Maybe they'll sponsor you and it will become a big deal? ; )I really love little things to just do quickly whenever you have the right scraps. Hmmmm. Thinking about adding to my "alongs" but 3.5 inches? I think I can, but not 396 blocks : D

kbzelazny said...

I've got it- "Nano Nine Patch" as in Nanotechnology?! I am adding this to my to-do list!!

Diane said...

yikes! they are teensy, really cute too.

GeeGee said...

How about "9-Patch Infinity". They are cute but will have to pass, I am already doing a teeny one. Good luck in your journey!!

I love this Amanda. I will join you once I return home from vacation. Another wonderful way to use up scraps.
