a new WIP and a giveaway

Connecting Threads has a brand spankin' new fabric line called Matsuri. It's be-au-t-iful cotton lawn fabric. If you aren't sure exactly what cotton lawn fabric is, thankfully wikipedia knows! I had to do a little research myself. This fabric is so, so nice and the colors are wonderful!
The top left print in the block above is my absolute favorite! I was very curious to how it would sew up, since it is such fine fabric, but it sews up beautifully. I'm sashing it with plain white quilting cotton, and I'm happy to report that mixing the fabric weights is working very well. It's another thing I was curious about.

I'm using this tutorial by Ashley at film in the fridge. I think it compliments the fabric quite nicely....clean lines and perfectly sized pieces to show off the pretty prints. It's handy that I didn't have to do the math, either. Thank you, Ashley! :)
I was going to make it a lap size, as that seems to be my default size when it comes to quilt making. But about a week ago I was sewing with a few friends in the church basement. As I was working on my blocks they asked what size I was going to make the quilt. Heather, who's motto in quilting is "go big or go home", suggested I keep going. So....I'm now making this a king size. You gotta be careful who you ask advice from! When I showed my husband the photo, he said he really liked it. Works out well, since it will eventually be on our bed!
This is what I've got so far. (Please excuse the weird lines from the church basement floor.) I'm not excited to add all that skinny sashing in between, but it's going to be totally worth it! Right???

Now, for the giveaway! Connecting Threads is kindly offering up 3 fat quarter stacks of this beautiful fabric line to three of my readers. If you would like to win a fat quarter bundle, please leave me a comment in this post. In your comment I'd like to hear what your default quilt size it. As stated earlier, I almost always make lap size quilts (60" x 72") if it's not for a specific purpose. I'm not sure why, it's just the way it is! I will pick the winners next Monday. The contest is open to US and Canadian residents only.

If you are curious about cotton lawn or if you would like a few tips about sewing with lawn fabric, Connecting Threads has a fact sheet that you can download here.

One more thing...my book is back in stock! Yay!

Happy Monday to you!

Amanda Jean!

I work for Rubenstein and Ziff... we have your book! My "sample" is sitting in my dining room. :)

My go-to size quilt is double... perfect for wrapping my ample bod in!

I love all of your stuff - and it's funny, I just learned the meaning of "lawn" today myself.

Hi there, I'm a big fan of connecting threads - I love their fabrics and their prices! My default size is baby I guess. Someone around me is always getting knocked up and needing a quilt. :-)

I'm also getting into mug rugs - a great way to learn something new.

I guess my default size is baby since that is what I've made the most of. They are generally for a specific purpose.

Love the fabric! Thanks for the giveaway chance. I can't say as I have a default. I work from small to king size. I make 'em all and need a change now and then. So, I change it up all the time.

This fabric is BEAUTIFUL!!! What a treat. The size of quilt I make the most of is 38 x 48ish. Only because I make a lot of cherity Quilts For Kids. Otherwise, small twin.

I'm a throw defaulter :) But lately, I have been making quilts for family and they want them for their beds, which has been queen sized.

Wow - you've gotten tons of comments. I noticed your post and rushed to read it as I just got their catalog today - however, I didn't get a chance to google or read up more on what 'lawn' fabric was....but so loved the prints as I was outside working in the lawn today :) I generally work smaller scale (I like small piecing) however I often make baby quilts most often. THanks for a chance to win! Would love to check this new stuff out!

I love that Connecting Threads is becoming more active in the online quilting community!

As for quilt size, I'm also a "go big or go home" person.

I mostly stick to crib and lap size quilts, easier to quilt, but I have made several double size quilts. I am not an expert like you so have to go with what I can manage. I love that fabric line, very pretty. Amanda, you make every quilt look special. Would love to win. Cynthia rockyroad@sasktel.net

I tend toward bed size quilts. I've made twin, queen and king sized quilts. On my design wall I have a largish wall hanging and another wall handing size. I also have a large lap quilt size. Not sure of specific measurements. Ultimately, I don't have one size that I default to, I make what I want to make.

I'm still a quilting weenie, so I've only made baby/lap quilts. Maybe it's time for me to go bigger too!

I'm definitely a large lap making kind of gal also. I like Heather's motto...I'll have to work on that!

I usually do lap size too, because quilts are so yummy to snuggle up with... and I'm totally overwhelmed but the giant amount of quilting on anything larger. :D
Thanks for the great giveaway!

Jo said...

How is over 80 and under 100 for a size? I like full-queen size. They are more snuggly.

Carla said...

I love your blog! I too make mostly large lap quilts. They are more do-able. thanks

Agent 99 said...

I have a tendency to make small lap quilts but am gradually sizing up. Who knows, twin-size may become my default. I like the idea of a larger palette on which to work.

Jean said...

Gorgeous fabrics and quilt! Yea, the sashing is going to be "fun", but so worth it. I'm like you, I tend to feel like quilts are done before they reach the king size, but it depends on what I am going to do with it.

Debbie said...

I tend to work in wallhanging size mostly. 2-3 feet square and smaller. I really like the turquoise and red combo characteristic of these fabrics. Your quilt is going to come out great with the sashing. Thanks, Amandajean!

Jill said...

I like to do baby quilts because they are usually a quick finish.
Lap size are fun too. Have your book on order can't wait to get it.

Nancy said...

I havent mixed fabrics yet, but would love to experiment.. kind of like a modern take on the crazy quilting... these fabrics look just beautiful. very seren. I like to make bed size quilts, focusing on 80 x 80 lately... I too feel the bigger the better!

I'm still pretty new to quilting. My default would probably be crib size right now since I'm too much of an instant gratification person to finish a big one. I have yet to finish anything bed-sized, but I have 2 WIPs that will hopefully get there!

When I saw this fabric (which I loved at first sight!) in my most recent Connecting Threads catalog, I was wondering how the cotton lawn would sew, thanks for sharing.
Typically, my go to size is queen. Don't know why, just seems to fit more people's lifestyle and home desire's best.
Thanks for the chance a winning the FQ stack. Jane

Heather said...

In general, I would like to make primarily bed-sized quilts. We have 2 twin, 2 queen and a king sized bed in our house...even a double if you count the futon that gets made up for adolescent guests). That said, I typically make many more throw quilts for the couch!

Jennie said...

I am new to quilting but I have made 4 crib and wallhanging size and one full size. Thanks for the giveaway.

When I started making quilts, it was always for baby shower gifts. But I now have several lap size quilt-tops ready to go. And that seems to be my current default. But mostly since I have only worked up teh courage to make one twin size quilt top and have yet to quilt it. I'm working my way up to it. lol

My default size is, like yours, large. Most of my quilts are larger than 70"x70", but the size depends on the pattern. Lately though, I've made a number of small quilts (about 35"x35") using charm packs.

Camilla said...

Uh.. I just fell in love with the sparkly-dotty blue one!
So far I'v only made one quilt (laps size), fairly new in this game, but I'm already working on two in twin size :)

I default to twin size - it's just so perfect for so many uses. Congrats on having your book back in stock and getting to host a giveaway for this lovely new fabric.

I don't have a default size, since I've only made quilts for a specific purpose. I'm still working on covering all the beds in the house with quilts. Thanks for the chance to win this beautiful fabric.

Judy said...

Since I'm just starting with blocks I'd have to say I've only finished one quilt top from a QAL and that was more of a lap quilt. My goal is to make twin size for my girls bedrooms. Thanks for the chance.

Jantine said...

I have two favorite sizes ;-). 60x72 for lap quilts and 45x60 for kids quilts!

Kymberly said...

I'm new to quilting and don't have much space in our apartment so my default quilt setting is for a queen sized bed. I recently had a quilt though that I shrunk from a queen to a lap size due to lack of blocks and I'm getting bored with it. It's a bright quilt that will be great to curl up with in those early spring mornings when it's still a little cool.

Kathleen Shields said...

I love making twin or queen sized quilts...the bigger the easier it is for the whole family to cuddle under it!

Kathy B (from MD, USA) said...

I really don't have a default size. I generally am making a quilt for someone - so it depends on their needs. If it is a wedding gift - I usually do a King so they can use it always.

Beth said...

Thanks for the chance to win. I've never used lawn fabric but it sounds nice.

I don't think I have a default size. Whatever the pattern says or depending on how much energy and motivation I have seems to determine the size if I'm not using a set pattern like the stripe quilt I'm currently working on.

Cathy said...

I'm also a "the bigger the better" type of gal. I don't need instant gratification.

Malinda said...

Crib or lap size - anything bigger scares me! I've pieced a twin, but have yet to put it on the frame and quilt it!

Anonymous said...

I tend to go full size quilts. Bigger than twin, smaller than queen. I do this because in between the twin and queen I am ready to start a new quilt. Bahaahaha! That is how I decide how big to make them if the are not made for a spacific purpose.

A Little Handmade said...

Wow. These fabrics are beautiful, and the giveaway is so generous!

I have only made lap quilts. Fortunately, I have wee ones. Once they grow, I suppose my quilts will need to grow with them!

I usually make lap size quilts. I even make larger quilts for babies, because my girls love their quilts even if they are on the small side. I figure if my girls like theirs, other kids might like larger quilts later too.

I alternate between quilting and garment sewing, so the cotton lawn really excites me! I am headed to Connecting Threads today (online). My quilts really vary in size depending on who I am making them for. I don't have time to make a quilt just because, but I want to! Thanks for the giveaway!

Tori in Bmore said...

My default is also lap size, mostly because there are so many patterns I want to try, I don't have time to make a larger size! One of these days . . .

Sharyn Hutchinson said...

I find I usually make quilts as big as possible. I'm not sure why. I don't go as far as adding borders just to make it bigger, though.

P.S. I found your book at my local quilt shop yesterday. I'm so excited.

april said...

I mostly make throw size quilts. 60x70 seems like my standard size. I've made 3 baby sized ones too and found them awesomely fast. Currently debating a king size vs slightly bigger throw size, am scared of the thought of quilting it if it's king sized though...and yet don't really wanna justify the $$ for long arming one...decisions!
Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!

I typically make baby quilts, and quilts that hang on the walls. I have not attempted to make a quilt large enough to fit on a bed, but am soooo wanting to make a beautiful quilt to go on my queen bed. That will take perseverance on my part but I would love the challenge. I'm looking for that one pattern that speaks to me, as I will have to live with it on my bed for sometime. Thank you for offering this wonderful give away. I like what you are starting here with this KING sized quilt. I say, you go GIRL!

My "default" is set at lap size also but I always have one bed size going. I need to switch it up when working on larger quilts. I have just started ordering from Connecting Threads and just love them! The fabrics have been beautiful, wash nice and what a deal! Thanks for the giveaway.

That cotton lawn is gorgeous. Thank you for hosting this give-away.

I must say my instinct is to make large quilts (and afghans), now if only I could actually finish one!

Angelfire212 said...

Sadly, I don't have a default quilt size. I've never made a quilt! That being said, winning a fat quarter sampler would be just the thing to get me started. I think I'd make it in a twin size, or maybe full, so that my kids could play on it or have it on their bed long-term.

Wilma said...

I make queen size bed quilts usually. That seems to be most usable. I would like to try this lawn fabric in a crib size baby quilt.

I usually make lap size quilts. I'm a new quilter, adn that size is convenient for learning new techniques wihtout getting frustrated. (First time I've left a message--not quite sure if it will go through. Don't know what the different identities mean.) Thank you! Anne

Anonymous said...

I would love to be winner!

I usually make queen and king sized bed quilts as all my kids are grown and even my grand daughter has a queen bed. However I still make 60 x 72 inch quilts as snuggle quilts for TV watching.

vthiker said...

Really pretty quilt, it is going to be beautiful with the white sashing, totally worth it!

I typically do quilts to fit full size beds since that is mainly where they have been ending up! but I do love baby quilts...they go so much faster and are easier to quilt!

Anonymous said...

I am a go big or go home quilter Love the fabric

Rhonda said...

I think of them as lap-size, but I think technically they're twin (around 60ish by 90ish) since they are a manageable size to quilt. I have made bigger, but it seems like they are much more difficult to maneuver. Plus they take longer, and I have a short attention span...

Anonymous said...

I usually make queen size quilts - they can be used very comfortably on double beds, of course they fit queen size beds, and I've even seen them used on king size beds - you just add a dust ruffle! My second choice in sizes would be some type of a table topper - either long and skinny, or square.

JenR said...

I usually end up with a quilt somewhere between baby & lap size as that's about when my Crafty A.D.D. kicks in. :)

PWichert said...

I usually do a lap size quilt. I love having a quilt to reflect the season, or holiday, placed on the back of the love seat in my living room. It is the first thing I see when I walk in my door and it always puts a smile on my face. I think these colors shout SPRING. I look forward to seeing them in my home.

Sherrye said...

This fabric is so pretty! Makes me want to quilt something! Usually I do the smaller quilts: baby to lap size.

Anonymous said...

I alternate between crib and lap size primarily because I can quilt them myself and because most go to charity projects. The new fabric line is quite pretty, but I also might be hesitant about mixing fabric weights.

I love this quilt, its going to look so beautiful when its done! And very Spring-ish!

My default quilt size is baby to lap size. I'm still new at this whole quilting thing, so I like these sizes because they are easy for me to manage. I am attempting a much larger quilt for my sister's graduation present, I sure hope it comes out nice!

my default size is baby quilt size. About 40x40. Although I'm working on my first quilt bigger than that which is 45x60. Hoping it won't be too difficult to wrangle through my sewing machine!

I guess I'm in the minority here. I tend to make queen and king size quilts as those are he sizes of beds in my house and my childrens' as well. I sometimes make baby quilts, but I need to make myself hold back because I want to keep going.....

I love to make baby quilts. Favorite time was making 4 at once for a set of quadrupletes born to our church family last July.

Deonn said...

Hi, Amanda Jean,
I am happy to see this type of fabric make it's way into the quilting world! So much focus on quilt-weight cotton, that sometimes you just want to make a cute blouse but the heavier cotton just isn't it... At any rate, you're going to love your quilt! It's great to have friends to quilt with, too, by the way. My go-to size is actually a lap quilt too, now that everyone's beds are covered, the walls are covered, the table has a new topper for every season/month/mood... and lately everyone around here loves minky on the backs, which comes at around 60" wide. So... 60 x whatever for some great lap quilts. Thanks for the giveaway!

Man, I thought I commented on this earlier! You know they never pick the last comment in the number generator. Sigh.

Oh, and I do Twin or Queen almost all of the time. Which is why it takes me forever to finish anything! :)

Jessica Christensen said...

I usually make lap to twin-ish sized quilts. My kids are getting big enough that "lap" quilts don't cover some of them -- so I've been trying to go bigger -- than 60x72, but smaller than 76x90 -- somewhere in between. Love your quilt, love the fabrics.

I love Connecting Threads!! I was really interested in that cotton lawn too, so thanks for your thoughts on it.

I wouldn't say I have a default, because I usually just end up with what I end up with! But many of my mini quilts are only 10.5" x 12.5" inches.

Jac said...

I seem to make my quilts somewhere between a lap quilt and a twin. It seems I am at the age when all of my friends have some disease or sickness. If I make them that size they are good for cancer quilts or useful to cuddle up with when they are sick. I love to put a soft polar fleece or somekind of soft blanket on the back to make them soft and cozy to be under.
Then I have a quilt I can give a friend in need. they love them and I love giving them.

I LOVE Connecting Threads because they help me to keep my hobby affordable! I started out making primarily bed quilts (another go big or go home fan) but lately, my Mom and I have been making lap quilts to give to people from our church that are sick and/or grieving. most of my quilts have been for people (or babies) so that dictates the size. I'd say a lap size quilt would be my default though - that's usually how far the fabric will go when i'm trying a new pattern!

I find my default size is king so I can use it on my bed. My kids say I should make bigger lap quilts as they like to sit around the house wrapped in a quilt (their Dad likes to keep the temperature of the house cooler) so next size would be a double. Love the new colours.

Emily said...

My default size is in the range of 65" x 78" although my last three finishes were queen sized! Eeek! I love making mini quilts though -- so anything goes with their size!

Oh and as far as mixing fabric weights, I wouldn't worry about it. I've used voile, quilting cotton, and corduroy in the same quilt. No problem.

My go-to quilt size is 36" x 48" which is just perfect for a baby's play quilt. I also like 48" x 60" as a reasonably sized lap quilt. Anything much bigger than that gets hard for me to quilt on my home machine.

My default is the lap quilt, as they are easier to machine quilt on my sewing machine and I don't have the funds to hire someone to quilt on a long-arm. But my main reason is that I am now nearing 71 years old and I still have a lot of kits and material in my stash. I don't think I will make it to 200although I am trying and tell everyone that I need that much time to finish everything. (except somehow my stash seems to replenish itself - my daughter thinks it grows on its own!)

I am only on my 4th quilt and so far three have been for babies, but when I think about a quilt, it is normally throw size as well

Colleen said...

Lap size, for sure, unless it's something I'm making for the baby quilt stockpile (which is never as large a pile as I would like to have in stock). However, I've noticed that "lap size" keeps getting bigger and bigger with every quilt I make. I think I'm falling under my mother's "if it doesn't fit on someone's bed, it's not big enough" influence!

I absolutely adore this line and the only thing holding me back from ordering it is anxiety over working with such a light fabric.

Is lawn as temperamental as I've been lead to believe?

The fabric range looks beautiful, and I can imagine the lovely soft feel of the lawn.
I had to think about it but my default size seems to be queen bed topper size or twin size.

I was So thrilled to see this line on Connecting Threads we have 2 gals with iPads at our quilting group and there is rarely a day goes by that we arn't on the site checking out the new collections. I plan to make a (60x72) this is my default For sure, for a while I got caught up with smaller laps but this is more versatile. The guys like to cover their toes:)

I make a lot of baby quilts for a charity group I started to assist babies in a local NICU. This line would make wonderful baby quilts. Being lawn, I do wonder how it will hold up over the long haul but do intend to buy most of the collection, for quilts and doll clothes. The next size quilt I make is between lap-size and full-sized bed, a perfect size to cuddle up in.

I have always made quilts for beds, queensized as wedding gifts and now making baby quilts and twin. My grandmother made my sister and I lots of clothes out of lawn when we were children. We had quilts from the scraps. Looking forward to make a quilt out of cotton lawn.

This new line is exciting. I love connecting threads and order from there a lot!
I seem to like to make lap quilts as well. But lately there has been lots of baby quilts being made :-)

I'm a lap quilt maker, too. I never finish quilts for my family, though, only those that are given away (with a deadline for completion ). I love that color combination!

Lately I've been doing a lot of miniature quilts to swap with friends, but my usual size is lap size - bigger than that and I seem to end up with UFO's - LOL. This line of fabric is just gorgeous!! Karen in VA Beach, VA.

My default size is twin. I have a lot of kids and lots of twin beds

I would say lap quilts seem to be what I make most of these days, thanks so much for the chance to win this giveaway.

My go to quilt is usually a scrappy 9 or 4 patch because I use them as leaders and enders when I'm making other projectsI. Then I chose something that will pull it all together for sashing. I make QFK's, for teenagers so 50x60 size at least.

Gloria said...

My default size used to be lap size but more and more of my quilts are queen size now. Ah whats a few more blocks when your quilting?

Martha said...

What beautiful fabrics! I have never sewn with this weight fabric but think it would make up wonderfully in a lap size quilt. Most of my quilts are either lap size or baby quilts. Thank you for sponsering this giveaway.

Missy said...

I usually end up somewhere between 60 by 60 or 70 by 80 - so lap to twin. I've made some smaller baby quilts too. Thanks for the give away chance!

I've been quilting for 50 years and I've made every size possible. My favorite size though is baby crib size which we make many, many for charity. I love this size because it's a good "experiment" size and it goes quickly for almost instant gratification. The new cotton lawns by Connecting Threads are beautiful and I would love to have them. I believe the English used to use cotton lawns almost exclusively for apparel and they were always popular if you could get them.

Dawn said...

I am new to quilting. I am so glad to see you are making a King size. My husband wants me to make one for our bed and I instantly felt overwhelmed when I thought about how big that is. I have made one twin top (still to be finished) and am working on a BOM in a class with my 12yo daughter (what fun) I have 3 more daughters to quilt for (5 in all) They would love this print of matsuri

I usually make a 60 x 60 quilt.
Cuddling size. And more excuses to make multiple quilts for seasonal changes.
I just love this new cotton lawn fabric look!

My default quilt size is what I call a Lap+ size. I begin with a traditional lap quilt, then wrap myself up in the quilt top and decide then if I want it wider or longer. Usually I want it longer for more snuggling ability, so I add on a few rows, with the extra blocks I just "happen" to have on hand. I choose laps because my little machine can't handle anything larger than a twin.

Lisa England said...

I make mostly lap quilts because they make the best gifts. I'd hate to give a gift that required re-decorating a bedroom unless I knew the recipient was interested in that. But you can always use a lap quilt somewhere -- on the couch, in the car, at a ball game, etc.

Unknown said...

I used to make throw size quilts but as my boys have gotten taller, they are always complaining that they aren't long enough to cover them when they are on the couch. Now, I won't make anything less than twin size unless it is for a baby. I'd love to try some of that cotton lawn. Like you, I'm not familiar with it.

nancy b. said...

I make quilts of all sizes, just depends on what is needed at the time, or what pattern strikes my fancy!

T.J. said...

I typically make queen size quilts. If I'm just in the mood to try out new colors or fabrics, I will do either a four block wall hanging or a table runner. I always quilt everything by hand. I think this fabric might do well with hand quilting from the descriptions I have read.

Anonymous said...

I really love to make lap size or crib quilts since I don't always have time to quilt. It's easier for me to complete.
By the way, your fabrics are beautiful.

linda said...

Thanks for the opportunity to win such wonderful fabrics! I always make large quilts, and a few easy small crib quilts. I want the big ones to be used for a long time!

Thanks for the lovely giveaway. We just received the new Connecting Threads catalog and thought the fabric was lovely. Queen is my go-to size for making quilts. I like bed quilts.

pagg said...

It is beautiful fabric. My default quilt size is a twin. I want to try something bigger, but I have only one machine which has only 4 1/2 inches to the right of the needle...thus, I am a twin size quilter.

Kathleen said...

I don't know what my default size quilt is because I'm a newbie. I'm taking the BOM with Craftsy right now and also signed up for the Perfect Points with Connecting Threads but haven't started that yet. I do know I'm enjoying the process and would love a chance to win some lawn fat quarters! Count me in :)

Anne said...

I have made two queen-sized quilts, three or four throw-sized quilts, and many crib-sized quilts, but I can't say that there's a particular size I make regularly. I do, however, have three throw-sized quilts in the works. Love your project using the Matsuri line. It will be stunning on your bed!

Wendy M said...

I've never done anything larger then a double size quilt. I find it cumbersome to machine quilt even that size, a King size would be difficult to work with. I'm 3/4 the way through a wedding quilt for one son & have another one to do, a photo memory quilt for my other son, I'm going to be busy! Good Luck, I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Love the color palette. Makes me want to kick off the shoes and run barefoot in the summer grass. Then sit down on a quilt in the shade and browse through all those "I want to make that quilt books" while sipping lemonade. I love making all different size quilts for different purposes. I usually let the season dictate the color and size. Thanks for the contest.:)

Mary Claire said...

Thanks for the chance to win. I usually make lap size quilts, too. Although I've made many twin and queen size, too. Lap or wall-hanging size is probably my default. LOVE the Connecting Threads Collection. Love their fabric in general!

Bee said...

Default for me would be lap size. Mainly because they seem to have a variety of uses... great in the car, on the beach, at a picnic or just snuggling on the couch.. :)

Big fan of Connecting Threads fabrics; thanx for the chance.

Lately I have been on a baby/wall hanging size kick. But I'm starting a new King quilt next week(I just may use this tutorial, I love it) and it will be my 9th King quilt :)

Becki said...

I've made a handful of wall hanging sized quilts. I have just recently decided to break out of my box and am working on my first queen size quilt.

I use white lawn for creating art quilts by painting it with InkTense to create unique designs, landscapes, and embellishments. I would dearly love to incorporate a variety of other lawn fabrics to bring my ideas to life.

The fabrics are beautiful!! What a wonderful selection for "girly" quilts. I am one for making baby blankets, but have recently moved "out of my box" and started making full-queen quilts. All that fabric and so much fun!

I make baby and lap size quilts.

I love the fabric. I prefer a double or queen that way it fits the next size up! Great that you are hosting a give away! Thanks!

I almost always make a queen size quilt. Just don't ask me why. I really can't say but they fit on my beds. And my kids like getting that size as gifts.
I have never used lawn fabric but may have to try it. Sounds great.

I don't have a default size. I sew for specific reasons/occasions and that normally sets the size for me. I love this fabric and love, love, love your new quilt!

Sue W said...

Love the soft colors. I saw the fabric in CT's catalog and wondered how it would sew.

B Mom said...

i've only ever made baby crib size blankets (loosely categorized as quilts...i don't want to insult skilled quilters!) but i'm hoping to take the plunge and make each of my boys a big twin quilt in the very near future!

I agree that Matsuri is beautiful fabric! I absolutely love it! I tend to make queen size quilts...I get carried away & keep making blocks!

My go to quilt size always starts out as 90*108 but a lot of times I get lazy and end at around 80 * 90 (Full Size)

Dianne said...

I'm not sure I have a default size...I've made 3 baby quilts, a twin size quilt, a lap quilt, and have tops made for 2 full size quilts and another twin size. Most of my quilting has been for gifts so it kind of depends on what the occasion is for.

gina said...

I've been admiring this fabric since it debuted last week and I'm so happy to hear your positive review of it! I have only made three quilts to date and they have all been for queen-sized beds. It was a lot of work, but for all three of them I collaborated with someone else so that was very helpful. I like the idea of making baby quilts because the results are more immediate, so I think that's what I'd be likely to try if I won a fat quarter bundle of this fabric. Thank you for the chance to win your giveaway! Looking forward to seeing the finished version of your Matsuri quilt.

Therese said...

I tend to keep going and going, usually ending up around a twin size or bigger(I'm always afraid it's going to be too small)! I just saw these fabrics at connecting threads too! So pretty! mudhens1@embarqmail.com

I agree on your lap size. I usually aim for that size too. I think it is because it works ell for many different purposes and ages.

I seem to mostly make throw size...60" x 72" because they are a nice "cuddle" size even for my bigger grandchildren. I do make larger bed size ones for their graduations, etc.
So of us "older" sewers/seamstress remember sewing with lawn fabric 45 - 50 years ago. I used the white or black for inferfacing in garments. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the "new" printed lawn ! What fun...

Linda said...

I was glad to see your blog about CT's cotton lawn. I just ordered a total of 3 yds. of it, should be delivered tomorrow!
I usually make lap quilts, but recently did a king for my bed and am now working on a queen for the guest room. But my preference is lap size!

Diane said...

My default is also lap size. No specific size, just whatever lap size for a particular pattern. Of course, I'm also making lots of baby quilts for charity!

Gene Black said...

I usually make lap size quilts but the actual size varies from quilt to quilt. I go with what works with my design.

After a horrible year cquilting a king size quilt, I said never again. I've compromised with a 72"xx72"" quilt that fits the top of a king with a mattlase quilt under it. Love lawn.....so Liberty of London....and these prints all work together.

The colors are beautiful!! 60ish by 70ish is my typical starting point. Every single time I get close to finishing, I decide "what's a little more sewing...it'll be SO much nicer if it were just a tad bigger!" I normally end up with something approaching queen size :-) I love your blog, thanks for sharing with us!

Mary said...

Lap quilts have been my choice since I have 5 to make for our grandchildren and 2 are completed. Then smaller. I seem to be a little challenged when it comes to bigger. One of these days.

Bridget said...

Very pretty quilt, one that I hope to try soon. I have made several double and queen quilts but do mostly lap size noe, 45"x60" as I find it hard trying to move the bigger ones around the sewing machine. Love all the fabrics and threads.

Twin seems to be my default (which is fine because twin makes a good couch quilt :) ) but I do love me a nice baby quilt too.

The lawn came out just days after I ordered a big pile from Connecting Threads - ah my timing, oh well, guess I'll have to order again, darn ;)

My default quilt size is Queen, although I am about to attempt a Super King Quilt for my parents as a surpirse and I love making twin quilts as there is a great satisfaction when one is finished relatively quickly :-)

Love the layout! I always start out thinking I'll make a lap quilt, or a crib quilt, or a wall hanging! Well, I have more oversize queen quilts, than I can possibly use! The last crib quilt I made, fits a double bed LOL!! I would absolutely LOVE to win these fat quarters!!

Deb said...

I'm definitely a lap size lover, and that's what I most always make!

Quilts that are planned and executed by this grandmother are usually children's twin size but Queen size quilts are the ones preferred by their parents. I haven't gotten to a queen size for Grandpa and myself. Soon I hope. I am so pleased I found this blog. One of the best I've run upon.
Thanks.
Sorry about the anonymous. I have not written many of my ID's down.

Beautiful Fabric! I like the lap sized quilt also because I can use them on the couch, on a chair, on a bed, or even hang them on the wall.

Anonymous said...

A default size, you mean you actually have to finish a quilt. I tend to just keep making blocks and starting new projects if I have to actually finish a quilt it depends on who it is for but I always want to keep them so my goal is KING size. bigger is always better when quilting. That way you can buy more fabric or win it yeah!!!
