a blue giveaway

Happy November! Every month my family and I play this silly little game. We all try to be the first one to wish someone else a happy month. This morning I was greeted by my 7 year old (before I even got out of bed) with a "Happy November!" Not a bad way to start off the day.

November is my favorite month. I love fall. I love the Thanksgiving holiday. It's cooler so there are plenty of chances to wrap up in a quilt. It's a great time to make more quilts. (Well, it's always a good time to make more quilts, if you ask me.) I think November is good all around!

In honor of the first day of my favorite month, I'm going to give away a quilt kit to one reader. The quilt kit consists of 42 blue, black and grey kona cottons, so you can make your very own blue quilt. Or...you could use the pre-cut rectangles for various other projects if you so desire. Each rectangle is a generous 5.5" x 19.5" so the possibilities are endless! If you would like to win, please leave me a comment letting me know of any silly games you and your family play. If you don't have one, your favorite color would be a good substitute. Happy Monday to you!

One of my favorite games is the M&M game. You try and suck up as many M&M's with a straw as you can then put them in your bowl. As fast as you can until a 6 is rolled on the dice. It is always good for a laugh! I LOVE blue and those colors are just beautiful together!

Oh, the possibilities are endless with what I could do. Possible finally get to that quilt for my bedroom. :)

As far as silly games, my husband and I hide a little plastic buddha figurine in the house. Once you find it, you hide it somewhere else. It's the game that never ends.

Every day when my husband comes home, my two oldest kids (boys) hide behind the couch and pretend to 'be gone' and every day my husband pretends to be 'sooo sad' because his boys aren't at the door to give him hugs. And then the boys run out from their 'hiding' spot and bring him his hugs. Silly, kindof pointless too, but they LOVE it!

My husband and I love to think up old songs if someone makes a comment. Like if we say we have to go now we start singing the 60s song "Go Now" THe one we have my 3 year old doing is an oldie "Hey Paula" everytime someone says Hey on of us starts singing "Hey Hey Paula, I want to marry you" My little guy loves it and even makes up his own songs to fit a comment. I would love to win your blue quilt kit blue is my and my son's favorite color!

Oh, we have soooo many silly games in our family. My daughter plays "the way down hole" where he sits on the couch and puts his feet up on the table/ottoman. Then she lays a blanket across his legs so that it hangs down like a tent. She then goes under the blanket and up over and through his legs to get into the "way down hole". Too funny!

We play "find a word that starts with athe letter a, b, c, etc" when we are driving in the car. It keeps my wiggly son entertained for a period of time.

We use the toothbrush to chase the firefighter duck that hides in my daughter's mouth. Then she rinses and it jumps out of her mouth and falls in the sink. It actually has made her willing to allow us to brush her teeth.

We wish our family members a very merry unbirthday on the day of the month on which they were born (their month-a-versary). It's so fun to be the first to remember them on their special day. Happy November to you!

Our silly game was one to pass the time when travelling long distances in the car - called Cricket - different types of vehicles were worth different run scores and a truck meant you were out. Seemed to keep us amused for quite long periods of time, with very few disagreements!!!!!!Oh to be young again!!! Favourite colour....mmm... hard to pick just one as i swing according to my mood!!!!!! Ciao

We all take turns surprising each other with a sandwich hug. Two member of the family sandwich another member of the family and say "Zoey Sandwich" or whoever. The kids love feeling special. It is our silly game.

Blue is my favorite color by the way!

I'm not a blue girl, give me autumn tones anytime but when I checked my stash I have lots of blues, sew maybe its time to make a blue quilt. These would be a wonderful addition to my small stash

My favorite color is green. My daughter is still too young for us to have developed silly games beyond peekaboo and things like that.

Dani said...

Well, Happy November! My favorite color is yellow.

We don't have any silly family games. But, when my now 16 year old granddaughter was young, her favorite car game was to ask me what I would do if a tiger got in the car with us. She expected me to come up with all sorts of silly answers.

I'm thinking of making a blu and yellow log cabin quilt for my husband. These fabrics would be perfect.

A Plain Path said...

Well, my favorite color is red, but I'd still love to win this give-away. :D Thanks for sharing!

Anytime we are waiting anywhere the kids I will play a game with naming something that all starts with the same letter. We start at A and work our way through the alphabet. So, it might be name "A" animals, "A" foods, "A" movies/books, etc.

Unknown said...

We still play a lot of peekaboo in our house! We love blue and green in our house.

Love the colours!

Kate said...

growing up, we played charades a lot - pretty fun! Now, my husband and I play the "let's ignore the GPS and discover new places" game. :)

Sunanda said...

I have been collecting blues to do a pinwheel quilt -- these would fit in perfectly.

Funny games...When we give a birthday present we hold it over the birthday child's head and recite "heavy heavy hang over your head what are you going to do with it?" The kids has to say something like "eat it, or drum on it or what ever they imagine" and then we let them open it and have a big laugh.

Xandi said...

My husband and I always make the dogs talk (when nobody else is around!). I was quite shocked to discover that my boy swears sometimes. Well, he's 2, so that's like a teenage boy, so I guess it shouldn't shock me.

CC said...

I love the blues. A silly game I play with my 2.5 yr old boy is Dance Freeze. Randomly throughout the day he will start singing "dance dance dance" while wiggling and then do a dramatic pose and shout freeze! and everyone near him has to freeze until he goes dance dance dance and wiggles again :-)

jenaulwes said...

We turn everything into a song. The songs are about Henry, my son, mostly. My husband sings everything to him and I loooove it. So I join in.

Love the blues!!

Wheel of embarrassment - a game we invented where you spin the wheel and have to follow the instructions, like sing the ABC 's backward.

When I was a kid, my sisters and I always rushed to beat my dad to say, "First to see the sand dunes!" when we were driving to the beach. If I happen to be in his car, and we are heading to the beach, we still do it. It cracks us up each time. I am trying to start it with my kids, but at 3 1/2 and 6 months, I may have to wait a while!

Sydney Simon said...

This isn't really a game, but my family calculates time until a special event in sleeps. For example, we're are meeting up in New York next weekend, and it's only 11 sleeps until we all get to see each other.

Blue is my favorite color! This giveaway is awesome.

Nancy said...

i love the blues it reminds me of my husbands gorgeous eyes. My family and I tend to play the staring game where no one can blink, whoever blinks first loses. We do this around the dinner table and even sometimes when we are out eating

Jen said...

We play the ABC game in the car to keep us busy on long trips. You have to find words on signs, license plates, etc. and find a word for each letter, Q and X are the tough ones!!

What beautiful blue fabrics, love them since my favorite color is blue!

The Mama said...

We sing silly songs about putting things in the wrong place, or about all the silly "big mistakes" we can make. It makes the idea of making a mistake less daunting!

Bridgit said...

What a fun game! I too love november. I don't comment often, but my mom, her best friend and I just finished up a lovely rainbow zigzag quilt using your tutorial. It is a perfect baby quilt for a good friend of ours, and so great to make it together!

I love the blue quilt. I thought about making it, but couldn't bring myself to commit to buying that much new fabric.

Family game: One of us will say, "Don't eat my... [fill in the body part]" and out kids (2&4) will start munching away. They love it, and they learn all sorts of odd ball body parts (shin, wrist) that way.

Enjoy your November... so much to be thankful for, don't you think!?

And I love blue!

Well, blue is my favorite color. I cant think of any silly games my hubby and i play regularly, but when we were dating we had this little bag of sunflower seeds that niether of us wanted so we would hide it in a really good spot, then when someone would find it-a day, a week, or even months later him/me would hide it again.

One silly game we like to play is Sock Dodgeball. My toddler boy loves throwing things and one day I was going to throw some old, single socks away. My Husband stopped me and combined the mix-matched singles together. He then started throwing them around with my toddler. Before we knew it, we were ducking behind couches, hiding behind corners and laughing up a storm.

oh i loved the blue quilt!!

i don't think my family has any silly games...my older brother strictly enforced the "i call this seat" rule to save your seat when you were getting up for something (like a snack from the kitchen, or a bathroom run) and i usually lost if there was ever a dispute. but i don't know that's a game, really, is it?

my favorite color is blue.

Sign me up for the giveaway please...blue is a family favorite! Similar to Christmas stockings we have a sock that is for birthdays (from a pair of purchased Birthday socks). The Birthday girl or boy gets an item in the sock...and we hide it in the house. They must find it the morning of their birthday. Fun!

bananas! it's so much fun.

I don't know the origin of it, but we play "Pinch, punch, 1st day of the month. White rabbits." Not as violent as it sounds. It may be a British thing. We can blame it on my war bride mother-in-law.
My stash is most lacking in blues. Your give away would be a great start in filling that gap.

Before the days of DVR and TIVO, my sister, dad and I would play the 'guess the commercial' game while watching TV. You got a point if you were the first one to correctly identify the product before they showed/said what it is was. One who think that a parent would be a gracious winner, but my dad never was! :)

Chelley said...

My favorite color is red, but these blues would make a great quilt for my brother!

Anonymous said...

Our silly game is "what's for dinner, am I first?" The kids all compete to ask if they are the first one to ask the age-old question "what's for dinner?" The dinner answer isn't as important as being first. Never mind that the weekly dinner menu is posted on the fridge - they all must ask daily!! Over the years they have even drafted rules for this game! My kids are 18, 16, 13, 12 and they haven't tired of this game in years!!!

My favorite color is blue!!! All those blues would help calm me when I'm being barraged with the daily question!!

Right now our silly games are mostly dictated by the 2-yo. She came up with "Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall... UP!" Hysterically funny to her, again and again.

Also variations on "bouncy world" and "cozy home," which both involve couch cushions on the floor, blankets, and stuffed animals. Big brother (9) and big sister (7) are happy to construct these.

I like reading the other ideas in these comments! Thanks! And my favorite color is blue!

Dear Amanda, First I would like to thank you for creating your blog and congratulate you on 4 years of sharing your passion! I am new to your blog as of a few months. I have just started quilting and am currently enrolled in two classes. I have already started several projects and can see how addicting this process is. I have yet to actually quilt anything... I take that class tonight! But I do have a completed quilt top and several others started. My fiancee is already calling me a fabric hoarder and I told him, he hasn't seen anything yet ;) SO... thank you for your inspiration. Blue is my fiancee's favorite color and when I showed him the picture of your "Blue" quilt he said, "now that's more my style". My fiancee travels a lot for work, and we play a lot of phone tag! The fun part is leaving crazy messages on each others voice mail. Playing the part of different characters using different accents, its hillarious! Thanks again for your crazymomquilts! -Rachel from CA

Silly game my dh invented (!) - when we see the same car we drive, in the same colour, we say "shwink!" - don't ask, I have no idea! But my kids do it automatically, which makes me laugh out loud!

Forgive me if this is a repeat, I believe my computer just blinked - but I'm not sure.

Every year at Christmas just after putting the ornaments on the tree, we turn off all the lights except the twinkle lights and my family plays riddle me riddle me ree, where we describe a color or shape and then guess which ornament we were describing. This can go on for hours!

LauraJ said...

We love to play an alphabet game of sorts while waiting in line. Like names that start with A-Z or cities or food or whatever we can come up with. It helps pass the time. My little kids like to play dodgeball with my dh by standing on our big bed and he tries to tag them with the ball by tossing it from across the room :)

Oh, and my favorite color is blue (except for M&M's - I won't eat the blue ones) Thanks for the blog, all the info, inspiration, and smiles :)

When my kids were little we would play the alphabet game in the car while travelling. They had to each find an animal that started with the next letter of the alphabet...yes this was a very long game to keep them busy. We had to stop that game one time while travelling farm backroads in WI when one of my boys spotted two sheep that "reaaly" liked each other. lol That son said they were playing a game too. Mom agreed and moved thier attention to the tractor on the other side of the road.

Our silly game is called "Cat and Mouse." We tie a string tale to a small candy (usually a tootsie roll). That is the mouse. Then we each take turns being the cat and trying to catch the mouse. The cat has a pot lid and all the mice line up in a group on the floor. The cat puts the pot lid down and tries to catch the mice. (Originally mice who were caught had to give up a small candy from their stash, but that part doesn't work so well with our kids so we just play for fun not for candy.)

Kris said...

Our favorite silly game is definitely PEEKABOO! Except we cover our 2-year-old with one of Momma's quilts, then run around the house shouting, "WHERE'S THE BABY???? DADDY, HAVE YOU SEEN THE BABY?????". Makes him giggle every, single time.
