Now, I'm not particularly fond of batiks (my husband thinks they are nasty)...but I must say, it was a great creative exercise. I loved the challenge! I could even get used to batiks. Maybe! I do like their saturated colors and the fabric itself is just so sturdy. Somehow it was easier for me to use scraps rather than whole fat quarters or yardage.
Anyway, this is the mini quilt that I came up with. It measures about 14" x 17".
I liked it so much I wanted to keep it, so I'd call that a success.
This whole exercise gave me an idea.....
I thought I would put this challenge out to my readers...can I play with your scraps? If anyone is interested, this is how it would go. I will select a random name from the comments. That person would send me a small bag of scraps. I'll use the scraps to make a mini quilt and send it back to the person who provided the scraps. Doesn't that sound like a whole lot of fun? If you are interested, leave me a comment on this post.

edited to add: Tammy was selected via the random number generator, so I'll be playing with her scraps. Thanks for all the interest in this idea. I think it's going to be a whole lot of fun. :)

Ok, I think your batik mini looks pretty ok, and I'm not a fan of batiks. And you playing with my scraps sounds like fun! Pick me!
He, he...I am so in! I have a some great solids that you could work with. Believe you me...working without prints is definitely a challenge.
What a great idea! I am sure I can come up with some scraps for you! And the batik quilt looks great!
I'll let you play with my scraps!! Love the mini quilt and I'm not a big fan of batiks either.
I'm not a batik fan either...so can I just say...your photo is nice.
Would love to send you my scraps. I have a bunch of strips cut from another project that need to be something....
Fun! I certainly have plenty of scraps to spare. :)
I am not a huge batik fan either; I agree with you that they are better in small doses and of course I love your piecing.
How fun! My scraps would probably be somewhat ... challenging. LOL! Count me in!
Did you know your blog is coming up on the We All Sew blog today? Nice!
:)
Wow! Have someone else make ME a quilt?? You bet! Sign me up :)

I must admit I have never understood how people could *not* love batiks -- they really are the best fabrics ever!
I won't enter myself into your trade -- my scraps would all be batiks too! :) But enjoy!
I love that mini quilt! I don't really care for batiks either, but that quilt is beautiful.
I would love for you to play with my scraps. Pick me! :o)
Your batiks are lovely - so rich. They're so stable they almost invite teeny-piece play don't they? I'd love to have you create with some of my scraps!
I would love to send you some scraps but i would also love to get a few of your scraps and make you a mimi quilt!
I'm all over that like a fat kid on a cupcake! Count me IN!
My scraps are overflowing. No matter how often I go through them and either use or give it away, there always seems to be more. I think the scraps are multliplying.
I would love for you to use up some of my scraps 'cause I need all the help I can get!
I have so many scraps to choose from I wouldn't even know where to start. But I would figure it out!
Oh this sounds like fun! What a great little challenge too to play with scraps that normally are not prints/colors you would pick. I have to say that I am not a huge fan of batiks either, although I can appreciate that others love them. :)
pretty mini! I'd love to have you play with my scraps and see what you come up with :)
Gee, you want to make me a quilt from my scraps? Does it matter that most of my scraps are really SCRAPPY as I like to use up every little piece? Count me in!
Also - mailed out the plaid on Tuesday ... hope you got it!
I'd love the chance to send you scraps.
Who would NOT want the chance to have an original Amandajean quilt?? Count me in!
So what don't you like about Batiks? I've never used them but I do look at them often, such pretty colors and patterns.
of course id be interested in this idea!! who wouldn't? thanks for the chance...ps...promise i wouldn't send any batiks!
oh my scrap bin is pretty eclectic and I would love to see what you do with them. Great challenge
i would definitely be interested! i have SO MANY scraps, but when i look at them, it's hard not to see the original project that they resulted from. so, creativity is a little hard to come by! i would love to see what you would come up with! and i'd love to return the favor, of course!
Oh- did I got this right? WE all take part and YOU will make the quilts? No exchange or anything? Okay - I am sure I'll find something special for you...
And by the way - I agree with your husband regarding the batics...:O(
Eeek - I would have to choose a group - vintage, AMH voile, Farmers Market (to match my daughter's room). Or maybe you could choose what you would prefer. This is fun - just thinking about it :)
Oh-I'd love anything you might do! I'd love to see you do something beautiful with all my Hawaiian fabric scraps!
Help-I can't read the word below!
I'm in for a chance to be picked, I like the random nature of this!
I would relish the opportunity to send some of my scraps away and have them come back in one larger piece ^_^
Count me in!
I have soooooo many scraps, but they are all organized as to color (does that defeat the point of scraps??) I have thought of organizing by light/dark or by shades (hmm, too much play?)
Corky
This is a CUTE idea....I have to be up front and honest with you though, if you pick my name, you'll end up with a bag of Civil War reproductions....that doesn't seem to be your style either...but I LOVE them.
I would LOVE for you to make me something fun from my scraps! Count me in :)
I would love to share my scraps with you. It is very sweet that I would receive some back in the for a mini quilt, Awesome!
Your batik mini is so gorgeous! Well done! I bet Shelly is going to love it. This is such a cool idea to play with others' scraps. I should really try it too because I could use the challenge.
I think it sounds like a very cool idea. Right now we are in the process of moving, so I am actually touching fabric that has not seen the light of day in a while :-) Anyway, I could certainly grab a bag full of some kind of scraps.
Jocelyn
That sounds like a blast! What a fabulous idea...creative rejuvenation!
!!!!! I would be HONORED to have a quilt made by you!! I have a TON of favorite scraps that I don't have plans for yet, and I think this would be fabulous!
Oooo! How fun!

I love this idea and I think I might do this with some of my friends as well.
I have a LOT of scraps...and want to cover my studio walls with quilt wall hangings and mini quilts.
Please pick me.
Wow, what a fun idea!
Maybe we need a scrap swap? I'd be happy to send scraps to you or someone else!
That sounds like fun! Will you also send me some of your scraps for me to make something for you? Hope I win!! Love your blog:)
You have been such an inspiration to me - getting me out of my 'box!' I would be thrilled to send you scraps to be challenged by!
Not only does it sound fun - sounds like a chance to win a work of art....cool!
That sounds like mega-fun! ...although I do think a scrap swap would be AWESOME. My odds are just better in that one.
I have to agree with your husband - batiks are nasty...and yet I remember thinking they were very cute when I was in high school...a while ago.
What a fun idea! It would be an honor and a treat to have a scrap quilt from you!
Well done on your batik mini! I generally use batiks in small quantities but usually the ones that are more like dyed fabric than designed. I'd love to see what you make with my scraps. I've got an overflowing box, so I could consciously pick some stuff out or grab and see what emerges.
Well yes, that sounds like tremendous fun...and I have scraps from years and years and years....
you might have to suggest a theme or color or...? Have fun whatever you do.
Who could say no to an offer like that! I am not a great fan of batiks either but your quilt looks great kinda reminded me of an amish quilt, and I like those!
Sounds like fun! Count me in! I have 10 weeks until our 3rd arrives so I have been so busy decluttering, moving my two girls in together, and all that fun stuff I don't have time for selfish fun time (quilting).
this sounds wonderful! I have a tonne of scraps to share. :)
that is a scraptacular idea!
I'd love to send you my scraps - they are looking lonely these days.
WooHoo - A chance to own something made by you!!! I am sooo hoping you draw my number - I would love for you to play with some of my scraps!! Keeping my fingers crossed!
I've got a ziploc bag filled chock full of 1.5" squares.. and a few random strips that aren't much longer than 6 inches or so. I've got a ton of different random fabrics in it, and I just add to it after I finish a project.. take my scraps and turn them into square and toss them in!
Not sure what I want to do with them, but if you pick me I'll send you the whole thing. Got to warn you... there's some strange prints in there.. hehehe.
I have a huge container filled with my fabric scraps, would be glad to send you some.

Sounds like fun! Count me in.
Sounds like fun! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
I would like to join, too...:o))!
Of course any time you want. But especialy now since I would love to have one of your creative beaties in my house.
I think it turned out really great! Everything I have seen on your blog is just amazing. Count me in.
What, my scraps would equal your work! Holy Moly, that would be amazing!!!
How do you feel about bright!?
That is such a creative thing you 2 did. I love it and I'm throwing my name in the hat.
Your batik mini is gorgeous! What a neat challenge. You might have started something, but then you always do! ;)
I'd love to see what you come up with using my scraps!
Would love to send you some scraps.
Kristin.Heaney@gmail.com
i don't like batiks either.
i think this is a clever idea & would love to do this. i'd even trade ya!!
Wow! I'm not sure my humble English scraps are worthy of such a fabulous challenge - but they can dream, can't they?
That's awesome! I have a lot of scraps that I would love to see made into a little quilt! :O)
I just moved into a new apartment, and a mini-quilt would be a great housewarming :)
I knew you would be flooded with comments! I would love to send you my scraps to play with! They need to do something other than sitting there, mocking me!
What a fun idea! I've got a giant wad of mismatched scraps that would challenge you! Even if I don't get chosen I can't wait to see what you get, and then what you come up with.
Ohhhh, I'm SEW into this challenge!! ;o)
Take care!
Paulette
Are you sure you'd want to play with my scraps - some are very very small - I don't know why I still have them but I always think maybe I can do *^%$@~ with them - it would be interesting to see what you'd come up with though ;-)
I m such a newbie and would love just to be a scrappy part of this challenge so that I could learn BIG time
Kindest Regards Linda
What a fun project! While I'm not a huge batik fan, used in small doses they are lovely.
I'd love to play along, though my scraps aren't very coherently themed at all.
miss_sarah_e_brown(at)yahoo(dot)ca
I agree with your husband. I don't know why i don't like batik but I really don't.
I'm with you -- other people's scraps are the most fun. mine would like to play at your house.
The batik mini quilt is darling! I've recently become a batik convert by trying all things out of my comfort zone...and growing to love them all! I'm the most curious about what Shelly is making with your white scraps...???? The mystery continues...!!!! Stay tuned for future adventures???
Oh, that would be SOOOO fun! I'd be SO honored to have you play with my scraps. I know exactly which little pile I'd send.
She'll LOVE the mini you made. I can't wait to see what she makes for you.
Lucy~
What would someone NOT like about sending scraps and having someone else make them a mini quilt out of them? Why YES, YES, YES!!! I have so many scraps it would be hard to figure out which to send you....hmmm...I think I would just stick my hand in the scrap bin, pull some out and that would be the ones I'd send. And I also am not a lover of batiks - like your husband, I think they look dirty.
Great idea for you to come up with something like this. How cool!
dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com
Yes, you can play with my scraps!!
Batiks are growing on me the more i see the possibilities.
Such a fun idea - hope I win!
nljames@mail.com
Heck ya that sounds fun! I can't wait to see what you do no matter who you choose! I always have a rotating stash of scraps...need to find a better way to store them!
I would like that very much,
I hope working with Batiks was not too painful for you. :)I like the end result. Nice and bright. Smack talk-I love it. My head is racing with what scraps I could send you. I have one box of scraps that is kept separate (for a reason).
I would love for you to play with my scraps! ;) I have a big tub full of scraps!
You can play with my scraps any time you want to. :)
That sounds like a ton of fun! But I'm not sure that I'd want my scraps to come back to me. :D No offense. I'd love to have a quilt made by you. But I'm trying to get rid of my scraps! I can't give them or a quilt made with them away fast enough!
Sounds like fun, I'm in! I got lots of scraps...
I love the saturated colors of the batiks. I made a quilt for my MIL a couple of Christmases ago with them, and really loved how lively the quilt felt with all those really intense colors. Been thinking of playing with them some more. :)
You can play with my scraps, but I don't have any really coordinated ones... they are such a mish-mash.
love it. I love your taste in fabric, and I'm sure our scraps look pretty similar!
Sure you can play with my scraps! I think other people's scraps are so much fun. I like to imagine what they made with each piece.
'Scrap Play' wow that would be wonderful for you to 'do your thing' with my scraps...how many bags do you want.. he he... I have tonnes...Lol...
Hugs Dawn x
wow, that mini is amazing and you are amazing. well done amanda jean
That does sound like fun!
Sign me up! This would be fun!
I have a ton of great scraps that an experienced quilter gave me when I was just starting out. None of them match very well and I don't know how to use them to make something nice. I refuse to get rid of them, though, because this quilter was so nice to part with them for the sake of my learning. You're welcome to have at them!
girlfriend --- you are nuts!!!! I love the batik mini !!!
I never used to like batiks much, but my mother recently made me a quilt with them and it is gorgeous, so I've had a change of heart :)
This is such a fun idea, I have lots of scraps I could send!
I get someone else to make the quilt and be SURPRISED? It would be like a birthday without the calories! Trust me there will be no batiks from me. This is such a fun idea!!
Hi Amanda Jean. What a neat idea. I have tons of scraps..lol, so I'm in. I'm not a fan of batiks and never buy them but hey, to each her own. I make up for it though in buying almost everything else.
Oh, I have tons of scraps - so, I hope you will be picking me...
And, having someone else make a quilt for me -- too cool!!!
Sounds like a great challenge. If I'm picked I'd love for you to send me yours too so I can make on fore you as I've never done a challenge before.
Ohhhh...I am So beyond interested I can't stand it!!!! I would love to have you send some to me too!
I would love to do this, but I have to say that my scraps would provide a challenge. Most of them are very basic and boring. :)
Oh, that does sound fun! Don't you want to do one for all of us :)
You're welcome to my whole scrap box!
Love what you came up with! I wasn't a big batik fan, either, until I started doing that organic wavy quilting (Katekwiltzing!). Then I was sold!
How much fun would that be!! Sign me up!
This is such a fun idea!
What a great idea! I've got lots of scraps you could play with, and I'd love to see what you come up with! It's always interesting to see someone else's take on your fabrics..... So pick me pick me!!!
I solemnly swear I will not include any batiks in my scrap pack. ;)
Oh my yes! And boy do I have scraps. I am a newbie, and buy way too much fabric for every project and then the scraps just stare at me, sad that they are trapped in cabinets!
Sounds cool! Count me in :)
~Julia
sounds like fun! plus, a crazy mom quilts quilt...awsome!
sounds awesome!
Sending you scraps = me having room for more fabric!
WOW! I bet you're surprised at this overwhelming response to a scrap challenge! I think it sounds like a ton of fun - pick me!! Also, think of how this challenge can be easily extended to others and how more people can participate! It really sounds like a great idea!
ohhhh pick me, pick me.... Sounds like so much fun. I love the idea of doing a big scrap swap bee- but since I'm due to have my 2nd baby in like 2 weeks I am making myself resist the temptation to commit to anything until next year. Your batik quilt looks great - and I too am not a fan of batiks...
Oh , yes please !!
I have a basket of beauties just waiting .
I talk to them often & tell them it won't be long but in truth they may be still there for my grandchildren & I don't have any yet .
I'm tempted to cut at random some of my favorite fabrics and call them "scraps" so I could see what you'd do with em! ha!
Count me in! The great thing about working with scraps is that the result is like a photo album of memories of past projects :-)
I would like you to draw my name. I would send you my friend's scraps because she told me about your blog and several times she mentioned that she missed you while your blog was on-hold.
I can't wait to see what you do with whomever's scraps you get.
Have fun.
You can have some of my scraps Amandajean! I would love to see what you came up with!
Yes it sounds like fun and I am very interested. I think my scraps would provide a challenge for you. I am surprised that so many of your commentors don't like batiks. I think they are beautiful. I'm anxious to see what scraps you get and what you do with them.
Blessingsto Amanda The Interesting Kwilter (that is long for "BATIK")Is this the last comment of the day? You are one of my favorite quilters/moms :)
It would be an honor to send you some scraps and see what you would come up with! Your work is spectacular and I would love for you to choose me... please... and thank you! Your original fabric artwork will be given a special place in my home.
ttr3@earthlink.net
An Amanda Jean original. Awesome!!!
Please let me in! It sounds like lots of fun! Maria from Denmark
I've never used batiks but friends have and made fabulous quilts. Now my scraps would be different - I don't have any of the fabrics always mentioned in Blogs and on Flickr ( Munki Munki etc) so perhaps they would be a challenge? Hope you choose me!
What a great idea. Please relieve me of some of my scraps, i have tons. I' have a project plannned, but there is plenty spare.
Love your little quilt!
So sad to read so many of your commenters don’t love/like batiks. Batiks are not dated, they are timeless. When we would all know how they are made, we would understand more about their beauty!
Maybe you would love some Dutch scraps?
I have enough scraps to go around the world twice...and some more. So, yes please, take some and make some!
What a great idea! I'd love to share my scraps with you and see what you would come up with!!
i'm with you....awesome idea !!!
What an honor to have "crazy Mom quilts" play with my scraps!!
p.s I worked at a quilt shop for over 3 years and had a WONDERFUL discount....I didnt buy a single batik...not even a fat quarter!
This is such a great idea - if I had more time this summer it'd be fun to help organize a scrap-fabric-mini-quilt swap! I think I'd love the challenge of working with scraps, the more "crazy" the better! (I suppose if I'm chosen you'll let us know if you want them similar or not) I do enjoy batiks, but generally I like the tonal ones that have depth and I use them in small pieces. I really like the little quilt you made and can't wait to see what she made!
Count me in ! I have a lot of strips already cut, mostly solids, I have been making string quilts into small Vet quilts. Your small quilt is pretty.
sounds like a great idea! send me some of yours and I'll do the same :)
Fun! Such a cute idea!
oh please call my name...I'll be there:) And I could do the same, or try, with a bag of yours too!
Such a fun idea!
It'd be fun to do among my friends, too!
kristen@mariettavineyard.org
Great! How fun. I'd love to participate.
cindywright1@aol.com
Hopefully I didn't comment 2x. I didn't see it come up after I hit post.
Ok. Now I KNOW you are crazy. You don't have enough to do, so now you're going to make a little quilt for someone else. Don't make me come up there for counseling LOL!
What a great idea!!! Add me to the pool. I hope you pick me!
I may have to try this with a couple of my friends!!!
That would be a lot of fun to send some scraps to you!
What a great idea!! I would love to send you a bunch of scraps to play with. . . it might give me a different view of my stash!
Oh I love the idea! I just started a small bag of scraps now to do a version of your house quilt! Your quilting on that is amazing. I was so inspired!
I'm in! I pride myself on my scraps :) thanks for the chance.
Some are ok, but I really don't care for batik's either. This sounds like a great idea, I love scrap quilts best- with a variety of fabrics!
That sounds awesome! I'd be honored!
What a fun idea!! I have yet to use many of my scraps.
Are you serious!? That sounds crazy fun!!!!Use mine!!!
Scraps? Seriously? If you're making ME a quilt I'll send whatever you want! What a great idea!Sign me up!
That's a really cute mini quilt! I'm with you on batiks though; I like them some of the time when they are used wisely, but often don't care for the end results.
I'd love to share some scraps with you....
lime.leaf@yahoo.ca
That DOES sound like fun. You do beautiful things with scraps. I especially like your snippets quilt and hope to make one of my very own someday.
YES! That sounds so fun...and I have a ton of scraps to choose from too!
Heck Yes... i will gladly give you some scraps to play with.. count me IN!!
I'd love for you to use my hand-printed scraps--let's do it!
You can play with MY scraps anytime Amanda!!
I have just the right ones in mind for you!!
This sounds like so much fun! I know just the scraps I would send you. The batik mini quilt is very nice!
What a great idea! :) I would love to see what someone else would create from my mess.. hehe :)
What a great idea, count me in!
I would love to have something you made!
I've got lots of creative pretty fabric scraps, and enjoy reading your blog. Pick me, and you can make something fun that you'll enjoy, I'll adore, and the blogosphere will appreciate!!
I have some great scraps you would love!
beth
Amandajean your quilt is great and owning a quilt made by you would be so cool! Even though I'm inspired by all your quilts with lots of white sometimes it's good for us to step outside our comfort zone. I'm fairly new to quilting so don't have a large scrap bag yet but I'm sure I could come up with enough for a small quilt .
well how exciting would that be!
I would be happy to send you scraps !
kathie who will even send you enough so you can make one for yourself too!
What an excellent idea this challenge was .... you might have the making of a new flickr swap group! Scraps from me would be a challenge as I don't own any Modern fabrics {yet}.
What a fun idea! Please pick me.
Are you kidding? I would love, no, LURVE to hand someone a bag of my scraps and say "go!"! I have scraps from 15 years back when I first started this quilty thing and they are like rings in a tree, they really span the range of my tastes and whims over all that time. You are so courageous, open and creative to do this. Have a blast!
What a fun idea! A swap like this would be great too! I bet some fab blogger out there has already done it. I would love to trade scraps with you even and make something for you too. But if you don't have enough scraps I totally understand LOL!
I believe in sharing! I'd love for you to play with my scraps! Talk about great inspiration.
Sounds like fun. I have scraps that I could send you.
What a fun idea! I'd love to send you some scraps!!
Great idea, it would be really cool to see what you would do with someone else's scraps- what a challenge!
Happy to send you my scraps!
What a super fun idea! I see scrap swaps all over the place, but I haven't seen a challenge like this before. Very creative.
Oh what a cute idea... xx love it ! i wanna see what she made xx
What a great idea. Why is it that someone else's scraps are always much more interesting than your own - even if you don't particularly like the fabric? I'd love to send you a bag of my Liberty tana lawn scraps to play with and would dearly like some of your scraps to make a quilt for you in exchange - this is just the sort of challenge I love! What fun! Anne
Oh my gosh that sounds like fun! I am a huge scrapaholic and have collected so many great pieces over the years. In fact, I never buy fabric and make do with just about everything I have collected. Such a great challenge that way!
sounds like fun!! I'd like to play :-)
I'd share my scraps with you any day! What a fun project that turned out great.
sounds a lot of fun! I want to participate as well. Let me know if you want my scraps. Thanks!
I love batiks. I love the colors and variations of them. And I have to say that I laughed when I saw this. You want SOMEONE ELSE'S scraps? Like you don't have enought to do or enough scraps of your own? It does sound fun, though.
Great job on the challenge, Amanda! Can't wait to see what Shelly comes up with...
Batiks and not a spot of white??? Look at you go girl. ;)
