I feel kind of "meh" about this quilt. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm going to put it in my quilt cupboard and pull it back out in 6 months and see if I like it more then. Sometimes the 6 month waiting period helps.
It was a WIP that was sitting around for way too long. A few weeks ago I pulled it out and worked out some of my stress and frustrations while finishing it up. Quilting is GREAT therapy.
It's a lap size that measures 50" x 60". The background is bleached muslin. It was inspired by this earlier quilt of mine, but I stuck to all solids this time around. I did a smaller stipple than usual, which I like quite a bit.
Binding and backing came from the stash.
Speaking of stash...I've been trying to make a dent in mine, so I've been keeping track (loosely at least) of my fabric usage this year. I've only busted about 46 yards so far. My goal is 100 yards. I still can't believe that I have THAT MUCH FABRIC! I guess I've been living in denial. ;)
Wow - I love this quilt! I love the simplicity of it. I'm kind of thinking I need to make myself one.

I think it is a great finish and totally agree that quilting is wonderful therapy. But I have to say, you only have 100 yards to bust... You should come over to my house, you have no idea!

I can't believe you actually counted your fabric! My criteria for more fabric is "does it fit in the cupboard?" or "will it get used up right away and not need a place in the cupboard?". :D

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love it! I was looking for something fast to make my brother, who just got a divorce and moved into an apartment with his two sons and has almost no furniture or anything. Looks fast, easy, and is really attractive!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think it's really gorgeous! I love all kinds of quilts, but I just love the 'crispness' of white and bright colors, then those small dashes of color are really cool! Very contemporary!

Oh, girl, we ALL live in denial about how much fabric we have. I think 46 yard busted is pretty good. I think I contribute more to my stash than I remove from it (and we all know that scraps multiply). I like this quilt. I like that you used solids in this one. It gives it such a crisp feeling. Don't feel "meh" about it. It's good. Striking.

ReplyDeleteYa know, a yard is only 36 inches. You yourself are probably about a yard and a half high, bive or take a few inches. 46 yards isn't even half a football field, right? So it adds up fast even though it is not that much. That's my story, anyway :)

Oh! I forgot to say....sometimes the wait 6 months theory works the other way. Some years ago I made my Mom and my Dad each a quilt for Christmas. I LOVED Mom's but seeing it now I think "what was I thinking" The important thing is that she loves it and displays it proudly on the back of her sofa.
ReplyDeleteIt has a clean, contemporary feel. Much like a Gee's Bend quilt, but with lighter, more spring-like colors. I can't imagine not loving that quilt! But I covet all your work - you are one of the major inspirations for my quilts!

Thank you for posting your quilt size and intended use. I am making one for my mom now and it is 48 x 57 and I kept debating on whether it was big enough for a lap quilt or not. Honestly, I'm tired of looking at the fabrics, think I will call it a day and go with the size it is instead of making it any bigger.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I think it is a striking yet soothing quilt, I understand how sometimes a quilt just feels blah to you even after you've finished it. I was having a similar feeling last week about a quilt I kept hoping I would love more as I worked on it but was only loving less. To my amazement and delight, my sweetheart came saw it and said, "I really like that! That would be the perfect quilt for my sister!" Hooray--I can let go of this quilt without any regret, and I do think she'll like it. Checking off another name on my Christmas list is a great feeling, too. Anyone lurking on your Christmas list who might appreciate your quilt?

I think this quilt is very fresh and a little avante-gard! But if you think it's too plain, you could always applique a few random flowers over the top. Just found your blog today- surfing instead of quilting! How do you get both done?
