I feel kind of "meh" about this quilt. I don't know what it is about it, but I'm going to put it in my quilt cupboard and pull it back out in 6 months and see if I like it more then. Sometimes the 6 month waiting period helps.

It was a WIP that was sitting around for way too long. A few weeks ago I pulled it out and worked out some of my stress and frustrations while finishing it up. Quilting is GREAT therapy.

It's a lap size that measures 50" x 60". The background is bleached muslin. It was inspired by this earlier quilt of mine, but I stuck to all solids this time around. I did a smaller stipple than usual, which I like quite a bit.

Binding and backing came from the stash.

Speaking of stash...I've been trying to make a dent in mine, so I've been keeping track (loosely at least) of my fabric usage this year. I've only busted about 46 yards so far. My goal is 100 yards. I still can't believe that I have THAT MUCH FABRIC! I guess I've been living in denial. ;)

  1. Wow - I love this quilt! I love the simplicity of it. I'm kind of thinking I need to make myself one.

  2. I think the quilt is beautiful! Maybe it's just that hanging-around-too-long syndrome giving it bad vibes. Hope you'll like it more when it comes out of time out!

  3. I love the backing fabric, it looks like a forest floor!

  4. Keeping track of my stash use has been great for my buying-avoidance.

Great finish on this quilt! Sometimes the ones sitting around so long have no hope of seeing the end!

  5. I think it is a great finish and totally agree that quilting is wonderful therapy. But I have to say, you only have 100 yards to bust... You should come over to my house, you have no idea!

  6. I love it!!! Very nice and modern!

  7. Gorgeous! Simple! Fresh!

If you don't like it after it comes out of the cupboard, let me know. :-)

You have busted more fabric this year than I have owned in the last five. You've come a loooonng way. Own it.

  8. Very nice! What's wrong with a a little.... or a lot of fabric? Never hurt anyone but the wallet!

  9. This is still a great looking quilt, even if it still has to grow on you. :)

That's encouraging, moving 46 yards out. Sigh; now if only I could move more out, and stop bringing it IN!!

  10. I guess that is quite a stash. It seems like certain things add up fast. My word verification is clast

  11. Holy guacamole - I yearn to have that kind of stash to bust! And this quilt is lovely - simple, modern and classic all at the same time. The stippling looks great. I always tell my husband that quilting is my therapy and I need A LOT of therapy!

  12. Love it! I bet you may enjoy it against a bold wall or on a bed next to a bold wall. Thanks for the whole 100 yards thing. I am going to let my husband know. May let me off the hook a bit ;)

  13. No, no, no - there is no "meh" about this gorgeous quilt! I *love* it!

  14. The quilt is super dooper! I am trying to reduce my stash too. Some fabrics aren't as appealing now as they were when I got them and there are so many I want to buy!

  15. It's reasons like this quilt that make me so glad you are back blogging. I'm off to the store TONIGHT to buy the fabric to copy the pattern.
Have you ever considered selling your quilts? I local boutique or in an etsy shop on your blog? You could make a fortune.

  16. I really like your quilt. If you don't like it when it comes out I will adopt it. ( ehehe)
That is a lotof stash to bust. I keep trying, but I keep bringing more in than I am using up. That is the wrong direction hu?

I can't believe you actually counted your fabric! My criteria for more fabric is "does it fit in the cupboard?" or "will it get used up right away and not need a place in the cupboard?". :D

It feels good to stash bust, doesn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I love this! It is even better than the first one in my opinion! I love it! or did I already say that? I still love it!

  19. I'm so glad you're back! Just reading your posts is a breath of fresh air and I feel the same way about this quilt...it's so refreshing! And yes, I think we all agree that quilting is therapy and it always feels amazing to put the last stitch in a WIP!

I think the quilt lovely - simple and elegant, fresh and modern. I love it.

And if you've used 46 yards already in less than 5 months, I don't think a stash of 100 yards is all that big.

  21. The quilt is lovely, simple fresh and modern. Isn't stash busting fun but I've found there is always a new range coming out that I just can't resist.

  22. You're nuts! I LOVE that quilt! Might just have to make my own.

  23. I can't believe I'm writing this ... I know my stash is tons more than 100 yds. OUCH

Well I love love your quilt. I'd be happy to give it a permanent home. It's is lovely.

I wish quilting was therapeutic for me! I love to quilt but it makes me a nervous wreck! What's a gal to do?

  25. Well, I like it. And I can't believe it's not your favorite one ;-)

  26. Oh my gosh, I love it! I was looking for something fast to make my brother, who just got a divorce and moved into an apartment with his two sons and has almost no furniture or anything. Looks fast, easy, and is really attractive!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Personally, I think it's really gorgeous! I love all kinds of quilts, but I just love the 'crispness' of white and bright colors, then those small dashes of color are really cool! Very contemporary!

I don't know how you can be ambivalent about it, it's lovely.

  29. I like the calmness of it... I hope it grows on you eventually.

46 yards is pretty good... I always tell myself to bust my stash but somehow more comes in than goes out :(

  30. You are so awesome. I usually think "meh" about bleached muslin but you make it look as jazzy as dupioni silk.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 'Meh' for you is 'Wow' for most of us!!

  32. Okay so this is just adorable but if it doesn't float your boast you could always donate it to a worthy cause.

  33. Oh, girl, we ALL live in denial about how much fabric we have. I think 46 yard busted is pretty good. I think I contribute more to my stash than I remove from it (and we all know that scraps multiply). I like this quilt. I like that you used solids in this one. It gives it such a crisp feeling. Don't feel "meh" about it. It's good. Striking.

    ReplyDelete
  34. And just to clarify, I don't think AJ was saying she only has 100 yards of fabric. She's just trying to reduce it by that much. (Halfway there!) I'm sure she has way more than that. Correct me if I'm wrong, girl.

  35. it looks great!!! i am sure i would be floored if i actually tried to count the actual yardage i have in my stash.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I like it! If you still don't like it in six months, let me know! still getting more interest in the retreat!! Yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I really like the simplicity of this quilt! I hope it grows on you. It certainly gives me ides for using some of my scraps. Thanks!

  38. I love the simplicity of this quilt. The solid colors are very restful to the eye. The backing fabric is sweet, too. It would make a great gift for someone you love!

  39. I really like the void space. Great quilt. That is a lot of white fabric you used up! :)

  40. jessica,

you are sooooooooo right. i have more than 100 yards in my stash. it's frightening! :)

  41. More than half way there! When you bust 100 yards do you get to celebrate with a trip to the LQS? :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. What a gorgeous quilt! I love the modern simplicity of it. And congrats on the stash-busting - I'm afraid to count up how many yards I have - my husband might find out!!!

  43. I love it! For some or other reason my reader is not picking up your feed. I thought you'd stopped blogging again. Gee! I'm so glad you didn't! Gotta go see what the problem is...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Good idea to let the love marinate. This is a sweet and simple project that should make you smile when you see it!

Ya know, a yard is only 36 inches. You yourself are probably about a yard and a half high, bive or take a few inches. 46 yards isn't even half a football field, right? So it adds up fast even though it is not that much. That's my story, anyway :)

  51. i keep trying to make a dent in my stash...i have no idea how many yards i have and honestly, it's too scary to count. plus, i don't have that many fingers and toes... :)

Oh! I forgot to say....sometimes the wait 6 months theory works the other way. Some years ago I made my Mom and my Dad each a quilt for Christmas. I LOVED Mom's but seeing it now I think "what was I thinking" The important thing is that she loves it and displays it proudly on the back of her sofa.

    ReplyDelete
  53. It has a clean, contemporary feel. Much like a Gee's Bend quilt, but with lighter, more spring-like colors. I can't imagine not loving that quilt! But I covet all your work - you are one of the major inspirations for my quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  54. I actually really like it - I was looking further on in your post for a tutorial ... any chance of that? Good luck on your 100 yards!

  55. I've got a doll quilt planned very much like this... Great minds think alike.

  58. I like it. It isn't as crazy colorful as other quilts, but the modern look is fantastic.

I wish I had as many scraps as all of you have. I will be waiting forever to make a string/scrap quilt! You are so lucky!!

  61. I love this quilt too! Nothing meh about it. And nothing wrong with 100 yards in a quilt stash. Hmmm, looking around, I might even have more than that. A lovely fabric obsession!

  64. A wonderful simple, modern quilt..I´ll take it if you should end up not liking it. And I wish I had a stash....years ago I had to give away lots of my fabric and since than I never got to really grow a stash again.

Also, I love this quilt! It's beautiful! Simple but beautiful.

  68. Thank you for posting your quilt size and intended use. I am making one for my mom now and it is 48 x 57 and I kept debating on whether it was big enough for a lap quilt or not. Honestly, I'm tired of looking at the fabrics, think I will call it a day and go with the size it is instead of making it any bigger.

  70. Does it have a name? My first thought was "Confetti!"

Although I think it is a striking yet soothing quilt, I understand how sometimes a quilt just feels blah to you even after you've finished it. I was having a similar feeling last week about a quilt I kept hoping I would love more as I worked on it but was only loving less. To my amazement and delight, my sweetheart came saw it and said, "I really like that! That would be the perfect quilt for my sister!" Hooray--I can let go of this quilt without any regret, and I do think she'll like it. Checking off another name on my Christmas list is a great feeling, too. Anyone lurking on your Christmas list who might appreciate your quilt?

And holy cow - you must have some stash! Good luck sewing from your reserves.

Oh, and have you visited www.WeAllSew.com yet? You might find some great projects to use up some of that stashed fabric!

  75. Oh, but Denial is such a wonderful place to exist! :)

I like the quilt! It's not as bright as some of your others, but very calming. Give it some time, it'll grow on you.

I'm trying not to buy, too. Good luck with that!

  83. I can't imagine why you'd care, but I have to say that I like this one much better than the first one.

I like how there are fewer colored pieces with more background showing. These must take FOREVER to piece and lay out.

Congratulations on what I think is a fabulous quilt. If it fails the 6 month test, email me and I'll send you my snail-mail address. I'll be happy to take it off of your hands !
I'd do that for you ! ( I really do appreciate all of the quilts that you share here and on flickr !)

I think this quilt is very fresh and a little avante-gard! But if you think it's too plain, you could always applique a few random flowers over the top. Just found your blog today- surfing instead of quilting! How do you get both done?
