ticker tape
I don't know why, but I'm almost embarrassed about posting this quilt. It seems a little...obsessive. Ok, it seems a lot obsessive.
I started making it about a year ago. It uses the littlest of scraps. Most pieces are about 1" x 2". The quilt measures 35" x 46". I didn't dare count how many scraps I used. A lot.
The binding is a lime green print that I had in my stash. I would have preferred a solid lime green, but I didn't have any on hand. I thought about orange, but that would have looked hideous against my red studio wall, which is where this quilt is going to live. And I've decided that I'm going to stop apologizing for hanging quilts on my walls. :)
For the backing, I used a funky fabric that I picked up at IKEA. I thought it would suit this quilt nicely.
To make this quilt, here's what I did:
I made a quilt sandwich (backing, batting and white muslin for the top), then I pin basted it. For the patches, I picked a fabric snippet, and sewed it onto the quilt sandwich with my walking foot. I removed the basting pins as I added a block. All the fabric edges were left raw. So it was quilted and "pieced" at the same time. I had to shove the quilt though the machine 4 times for each little block that I added. Intense, yes, but I am pleased with the results. Next time, I'd make it doll sized, though.
Since this is hanging on my studio wall, I haven't washed it yet, but it would be fun as a baby quilt. Each washing would just add to the texture of the raw edges-perfect for a wee little one.

I'm in the "I love it" section, too! You really inspire me with the way you just quilt, don't worry about what's in vogue, and you seem to love it.
I just love this idea for scraps. I can't tell you how many little pieces of fabric I've tossed. But now I'll be saving them! Thanks
This is the best quilt I've seen so far! I absolutely adore it!
I LOVE IT!!!
What an inspiration for all my little scraps! Just when I had been struggling with the conundrum: how small is too small when saving scraps?!! Thanks!
I have to agree - beautiful!
I have to say I love it, so cool.
Dang Cute!!! :)
This is FABULOUS looking!!
Oh I so love this quilt!
Sharon
This is quite possibly the coolest quilt EVER! Love it.
I love this idea so stinkin' much!
I mean, this is obviously what I have been saving all those random scraps for! I mean, I can only make so many tiny strip pieced baby quilts.
This is definitely going in my to do list.
I just LOVE this quilt - what a wonderful and unique way to use your scraps.
I find the Scaddy Wompus nature of the pieces amusing and strangely satisfying. As ever, thanks for sharing! :D
I just keep coming back again and again because I am so enthralled with this ticker tape quilt!
Love it! Thank you for posting and letting all of us drool on our monitors and keyboards.
Absolutely adore and my husband was quite impressed as well. His mom is a quilter too, so he's been well trained :) I love how you think outside the box.
WOW! LOVE this one!
this quilt its perfect! i love it!!!
This is genius! I hate throwing away tiny scraps!
I love this quilt. It looks like a stone mosaic wall. When you mentioned doll quilts a little light bulb went off in my head. I'm making waldorf dolls for my sons for Christmas-and dont those little guys need a doll quilt??
Hi-love this quilt. Just saw your post for Quilts of Valor. I am sad you closed the comments as I would have loved to make a block. Let me know if I can possibly join.

Love it.
I absolutely ADORE thi quilt! If you hadn't told me that it was very time-consuming, I'd rush over and start one straight away!
Oh. My. Goodness!!! This is one of my all-time most favorite quilts!!! Ever!!! I can't imagine the time that it took to put this together, but it is AMAZING!!! Thank you for sharing it with us ;-)
Really, it's so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. It makes me this of mosaic tile -- it's wonderful! Thank you for sharing! :)
Ok - comment 240.....I have been reading your blog for over a year now - and this has to be one of my favorites - wonderful. Keep em coming....
i am SO in love with this quilt! i love, love, LOVE it!
When it comes to art nothing can really be obsessive! This is just stunning Amandajean and I just love that it's totally different to anything else out there. I can see many of these popping up in blogland. You are such an amazing inspiration to so many!
So cute. I love it.
This is a scrap lover's dream - it shows that no piece of fabric is too small to be useful and beautiful. Clever you!

what a cool idea to use up scraps! I myself am one of those pple that just can't bear to biff the smallest bits of fabric! Again what a great idea!
i might have already commented on how much I love this quilt. I think it would be perfect for a hand quilted project. Did you do all the placement first?
This quilt is fantastic! I may just steal this idea with all the extra scraps of fabrics I love. It will be like a trip down memory lane hanging near me while I quilt.
I just love this quilt, a good one to use up my scraps, awesome
Obsessive is right up my alley! I love this one. And I love the name you choose for it - perfect ;)
WhooHooo! A fabulous and fun way to use those scraps I keep collecting. Great job!
This is definately one of the most beautiful quilts I have ever seen!
Wow, that is amazing! Here is a quilt I made inspired by your blog: Whirlygiggle
It's for my son who's coming soon in November! I received a lot of old baby quilts and wanted to recover them.
cool!!congratulations
This is a stunning quilt, and I am going to start trimming my stash to little pieces RIGHT NOW. I will definitely make it baby sized (for one of two babies expected in my extended family this month), and I will definitely free-motion quilt it.
You are brilliant and have inspired me to move from traditional scrappy quilting to with grandmotherly fabrics to trusting my improvisational skills and go nuts.

i just love this quilt!!!
This is absolutely unbelievably gorgeous. I think this might be my favorite quilt I have ever seen. I'm totally impressed and inspired.
I just stumbled upon your blog and I saw this. I think it's so so beautiful/cool. Using the ikea fabric on the back is absolutely genius!
You are my HEROINE! This is exactly what I have wanted to do but thought it was, kinda, wrong or something. Plus I didn't know how but your little outline of how it happens makes perfect sense. I love it. Thank you.
Very cute. I love it.
Design a great day,

Beautiful! Just how much fray appears? Does it get stringy all over, or is it still cute? Just curious. This is so cool looking, I think I am willing to forget about all the effort to get it done. But I'd like the results to be worth it. :)
Don't embarassed about posting the photo of your quilt. I love it! I must admit that I am not big on raw-edged applique (except in things like landscape/art quilts where this is sometimes the only way to applique pieces on given the intricate designs) but I like the idea of using up the scraps like you have. For myself, I would probably add strips around the outside of the bright scraps, and then sew them all randomly together but I love the design of your quilt. Simple but effective and what a great use of scraps! You are one talented and resourceful lady! Bern in Australia
Wow! This is beautiful!
WOW!! Brilliant! Definitely nothing to embarassed!!
This is sooooo cool. I have to make one of my own. Thanks for sharing...Kathy
Love this!!! You have given me an excellent reason to start saving all my tiny scraps! Can't wait to make my own.
I copied your design and I LOVE it. Mine isn't as organized as yours and I used fusible interfacing to keep the patches down as well as sewing around them, but it's the same general idea. What a fun quilt to make! Thanks for the inspiration.

WOW, I really love this! I think I might be obsessive enough to try one some day. It's really beautiful.
i just stumbled upon your site, and this is one of the most beautiful quilts i've seen in a long long time. So simple and really well done!
must. make. one. now! the thought of doing a traditional crazy quilt with all my many scraps...makes me crazy!!! This is far better and way cuter! Great job! kg
oh my goodness! I LOVE this QUILT!!! I got sent over here from some other blog and I'm sooooooooooo GLAD!!!! Can I copy you?? will you consider it flattery?
i know this post is old and you'll probably never see this comment, but i love this quilt so much that i'm currently halfway through making one twin sized for my daughter's bed! a little insane turning it all, but i'm loving it so far! and i've bookmarked your binding tutorial so hopefully that will go smoothly too. :) i've never done any quilting before, so this is fun! thanks for the inspiration!!
I've finally made mine -- an I-spy version, of course! http://obsessivelystitching.blogspot.com/2010/06/ive-been-obsessing.html
So glad to see you're back in bloggyworld!
I'm a new quilter and saw this your amazing quilt and totally whipped it up this weekend. SO easy, and so cool looking.
One question: did you pick off the straggly threads from every square? I'm having a hard time figuring how much to keep picking.
:)
Julie
that is incredible. i am intrigued to do one (a doll quilt). can u estimate how many pieces u used.
p.s. any plans to join twitter. you would be a welcome addition.
It is an awesome quilt. I would be honored to post a quilt like that. Great job and thanks for sharing (and the idea)
I bet you have the most beautiful wall! Can we see it soon?
Oh, so cute! Thank you so muc for posting this quilt. I bought some really rough scrap pieces from a local quilt shop, and wasn't sure what to make with them. Well, I think a ticker quilt is just perfect!
I LOVE THIS!!! It is fun and bright and cheery and totally inspiring! I am re-labelling my scrap bin to be "Ticker Tape Quilt - in progress" :-)
Thank you for sharing!
Comment #280!! this is a novelty to me, really amazing! Here to share a mini quilt I made based on our design
http://slootjesschilder.blogspot.com/
Was a lot of fun doing this!
I really like this quilt. When I first saw it, it didn't think much, but after reading how you put it together and that it uses up all those little fabric scraps, it has certainly inspired me to try making one someday.
Now to cruise the rest of your blog!
I just saw this on the blog post about how you got your name, and I wanted to see the original post about it. I got to your blog and thought a moment before I typed "ticker" thinking I'd type "tape" if that didn't work. I was quite tickled that I found it on the first search... but more amazed when I saw that this quilt is almost two years old... and yet you named it PERFECTLY because little ol' me still remembers the name (in the middle of an insominiatic stretch).
As ever, thanks for all your inspiration!
Hi I am just starting to quilt.....I Love the quilt....what a great Idea!!!!!
Lori
