elia's quilt

elia's quilt-front
This past weekend we had a birthday party to go to for my dear friend's little girl. She turned one. And we went bearing gifts-I mean quilts!

This quilt is really two in one. I shared the tutorial for the front here. It is so easy and quick! I can't wait to try it in a different color scheme.
elia's quilt-back
For the back, I used a crib sheet I picked up at Target. It was on clearance and I loved the print. Since the quilt is 45" x 60", the sheet wasn't quite big enough to cover the entire back, so I added fabrics from my stash to make it larger. I LOVE the results.

Here's a closer view of the fabric in the middle panel.

To finish off the quilt, I bound it in a solid aqua.

To quilt it, I did an all over stipple. After washing and drying, I am happy to say that I love the front and the back. I usually have a favorite, but this time I think I love them both equally.

Also, I just HAD to make her a matching baby doll quilt to go with it. :)

I LOVE this! Gotta make a red/aqua quilt!!!

Both quilts (big and little) are adorable. There's something about red in a quilt that draws me.

When I make a baby quilt for a second wee one, I always include a doll quilt if the older sibling is a girl. It goes so fast and helps use up scraps from the bigger quilt. Then she gets a "present", too.

Do you always wash your quilts before gifting them?

Very cute!

mama pea quilts,

yes, i try to wash and dry quilts before gifting them because they are so much softer afterwards. i didn't have time to wash the little doll quilt this time. i was finishing the binding a few hours before the party.

Beautiful job - I have to make on like this, and that number fabric ROCKS!

Note to self....always, always, always, check the clearance linens section at all stores for sheets...even the baby dept!!!
That quilt is great and the doll quilt....I couldn't show this to my 22 year old, she's not interested in quilts but doll stuff...that's another thing!:)

So digging the aqua/red.

Lizzy said...

Both quilts are lovely. I've always wanted to try making a red/aqua quilt, but I don't have quite as good an eye as you do for combining fabrics. Mine always look... what's the right word? Busy? Forced? You get what I mean... I'm going to have to study your fabrics here to see if I can pick up any good guidelines for choosing my own fabrics. That little girl is super lucky!

Kimberly said...

That's so sweet, and I really love the crib sheet backing! Great scoop at Target!

Suzanne said...

You are so resourceful. Is the sheet 100% too? Do you have a stance on using fabrics that are not 100% cotton?

Yvonne said...

These are just beautiful. Good idea to make one for her doll as well.

I love the color scheme of this quilt, and the matching baby doll quilt. I have started doing that as well for young girls. You said you washed and dried the quilt before gifting. Do you prefer this to washing the fabric before making the quilt or do you do both? Thanks. Love your blog. Rene'

I love this quilt. I was thinking about doing a baby quilt that was a combination of this quilt and your Ticker Tape quilt.....where the top would be large squares quilted in the ditch with the smaller squares in the centers being like those small ones from Ticker Tape. I just love both of those quilts!!! Your work is so lovely!

Annie said...

Amanda Jean, you are a machine! - I love it and the target sheet is PERFECT. I would like some of that fabric myself. Great idea!

Thimbleanna said...

Love Love LOVE it Crazy Mom!!! What a perfect gift -- it's quick and very meaningful!

Kim said...

Okay crib sheet? With the elastic?
Did you cut the sheet up or was there a flat sheet?
This is a great idea and love the dolly quilt to match.
I make wedding quilts for nieces and nephews and then make a baby quilt with the scraps from their wedding quilt to make a baby quilt...then wait :0)...usually doesn't take long :0) before I send that baby quilt along.
thanks for sharing
Happy Sewing

It's so adorable! That's one lucky little girl! I recently made a baby quilt with a coordinating doll quilt, for a friend. (Actually I am not quite done. I'm still stippling and then I have to bind. Grrr... it's taking me so long!)

Beautiful work! I love your blog. It's so inspiring!

Love the quilts. I'm still a little afraid to start a big one. I'm afraid I'll mess it up and waste the fabric.
