9 patches

here are my 9 patches for the one a day quilt along. i wasn't completely sold on my color choices, so i thought i would lay them on muslin to see how the blocks work together. i'm in LOVE with this. white sashing does wonders! i'm finding that my favorite blocks are ones that have a solid and a print in them.

we are on day 8 of the quilt along. (if you are behind, no worries.) i tried to add all the names to the sidebar, but with over 275 participants, i am sure that i made some errors. please check to see if your name is there and that your link is working properly. i'll adjust things as necessary. and don't forget to upload your blocks to the flickr quilt along pool.

if you were on the fence about joining, it's still not too late. nudge, nudge. but no pressure. :)

also, jacquie is continuing her spring to finish her challenge through May. you may want to sign up if you need a little motivation to finish up some of those unfinished projects. i know i do!

I am just amazed at what the white does. I am having such fun making the blocks. I have 14 already but have not photographed any of them. I will try and do that today. Thanks for the motivation!!!

I'm really behind but pretty good at catching up. :) I would love to join your quilt along...really really late. Its a good excuse for another quilt I won't have to find a reason to make.

Nothing like 275 people to keep you motivated!

I agree~~white sashing makes everything look better!

oops, I thought the block-along started today. I guess I am nine days behind before I even started. And, I was wondering why everyone was posting blocks this week. Now I know what I'll be doing tonight :)

Your blocks look fabulous, and the white sashing does look wonderful! Guess I'll have to reconsider some of my fabric choices. :-) I'll try to get my blocks posted in the next couple of days. Keep up the great work! Dianne B.

Wow -- that's an impressive list to have to keep track of (ok, of which to keep track for the grammarians among us.) I love the solids too. I wish I had more solids -- I really want to make mine out of scraps. I was in a panic when I saw your picture -- I thought -- Oh no, am I supposed to have 15 blocks done already? Only 8, whew! You've over-achieving again!

I'm in - I mean, not this minute, because I still have to finish sashing a quilt for a class project before the end of the year (eek!) but I'm inspired to run up a no-peek nine-patch a day. No organization, just a bag of scraps - perfect for me!

Sarah said...

Ooh, great idea! I am also a little on the fence about my blocks so far so I might try this for motivation to keep at it...

elle said...

Oh, I want to play too! My name is on there but no linky. I will start making these tomarrow!

Looking good with the sashing which is pulling it together! I do love a nine patch,I'm off to check out the flickr pool.

I would love to join. It's perfect timing, as I'm ready for my next project - a quilt for my sister... and i'm already behind!

beautiful work...
I love the multi print blocks and the ones with a solid...they work nicely together .

i like the idea of a super scrapy nine-patch, rather than the traditional, do you think it would be too much???

Amandajean...I am so glad that you showed your blocks with the white. I have been worried about being random with the fabrics that I use. You have given me hope to just let it go a bit more. Here's hoping I can do that!

This sounds like fun. I might join in. Can you post a daily number in your sidebar to show how many we should have by now? I might do this as a starters and enders type project.

fun to see how your project is coming together and to get your ideas about the solid and print being your favorite. also kind of you to encourage those who are behind.

I would like to delurk to join your one a day quilt along. I've never done a 9 patch. I've never Completed a quilt, although I have 2 in progress. Im sure this will be great fun, and I"m confident I can catch up!

I'd love to join! Count me in and I'll get sewing to catch up. I've been wanting to make a scrappy 9 patch with white sashing quilt for a while, and this is a great reason to bump it to the top of my wish list! Thanks for the quilt a long!

Hi! I have been chugging along with my blocks...but I have a question. If I wanted to start cutting out the sashing, what would the dimensions be? 2.5 inches by what? Thanks!

L. jane E. said...

I wish I could quilt along with the nine patch, and yours makes me want to even more. It's so fun! Alas all my fabric is packed and won't be unpacked till august. I think I'll go crazy.

Amanda said...

I love your blocks. The white does make them "pop".

I thought I signed up, but I guess I didn't. I would love to join in on the fun.

It's looking lovely. I'm not on your sidebar, but I'm on day 7 (started a few days after you announced it)

When will you post your recommended plan for cutting the sashing? I'm ready! You said 3 1/2 yards, that's backing and sashing cut in long strips then, short pieces at the top and bottoms of the squares? I take it, it must be 7 x 10 blocks? I'm ready to get the hand quilting started so it will be ready by Christmas and summers are crazy!
Thanks!
Lori

Never mind....... I did the math and figured out that those numbers were for the sashing only, LOL! This is supposed to be a *use up what you have quilt* anyway. Guess what, you forced me to dig through my studio stash and find that I had plenty for a binding and pieced, with front detail backing, gotta love those kind of cost savings!!! I got so carried away I made too many 9 patches anyway!
Thanks,
Lori

I did check the link and my name is correct but the link should be

When I use blogger to leave comments it can be confusing. And that is definitely a LOT of people. It's going to be fun visiting all of those blogs!

I'm so proud of myself, I'm actually keeping up on the 9 patches! Ok, so I do a whole week's worth in one day, but I am keeping up! Mine are in pinks and purples and I really like how they're coming along. Thanks a bushel for the inspiration!

your quilt along idea is just fabulous!! I will join in, but in secret because this will be for my brother and his fiancee for their wedding next year.

I have just one question - when you say 2.5" squares does this include the quarter inch seam or should I actually be cutting out 2.5 AND the quarter inch? (I am relatively new to quilting you see!!)

Thanks

KelliClever said...

Amanda-
Your Quilts/Blog have been an inspiration!
I have read this blog for so long and have never joined a quilt-a-long formally before, just quietly in the shadows, but now I am declaring I am in.
I just finished all my blocks! Yeah! I can't wait for the sashing, I always have the hardest time with long cuts.

Thanks -
Kelli T.

sam,

I just counted - so far I have used 58 different fabrics. I am hoping the white sashing can help pull them all together!

Can I join. I love to quilt. I truly need to make a dent in my scraps/stash. This will make a great gift for Christmas.

I already have 72 blocks. Whew! I thought I would get behind. I might make a few more to trade out some of the first ones I made that are not my favorites.
