sewing for therapy

i got back to work on my spiderweb quilt yesterday. it is good "wind down" sewing. it's fun to play with different fabric combinations. and it's a great way to use up those small pieces of fabric that i can't part with for some reason.

i've decided that i am going to make it a twin size, so i'm just about 1/3 done with the top of the quilt. if it takes me the rest of the year to piece it, i'm ok with that. i'm enjoying the process. and i'm also thinking i need to make one in PINK, as there is no shortage of pink scraps in this house.

the tutorial is here.

  1. A monochromic spiderweb would be cute.

  2. I have to find the instructions for this quilt: I love intricate work and I have so many little fabrics I can't part with, because I'm insanely thrifty with fabric and because of all the kids' precious little outfits that are all worn out except for a little spot here and there. :o)

  5. I really like this! Excellent use of strings! And I also love that I see you & I have bought some of the same fabrics - awesome! :)

  6. I think I could try out a monocromatic version of this - looks like a GOOD way to use up my ooooooold fabrics :D

  7. Absolutely loving your version! The colors are great and the white background fabulous.

  10. I so envy you and your ability to use WHITE! I want to sooooo bad, but find that I can't bring myself to do it.. Maybe one day!

  11. love this one. i think i am going to try it next. i love the way it looks. yours is so stunning, i have set aside green, pink, and orange scraps. how do you think you will quilt yours? that is my only concern with mine. i have seen it quilted around the stars, but i kind of want stipple. do you think that would be a mistake?

  12. I don't really care for the spider web quilts, but I LOVE yours! I think having the white for the centers is just what that quilt pattern needs. Looks so lovely!

  13. It IS hard to part with those small scraps.

I made a Spiderweb quilt (twin-size) just like yours three years ago. I, too, used a white background. It has a blue backing and binding. It is the perfect size for the sofa.

Your quilt is lovely. I can't wait to see it finished.

  14. WOW! I think this is the coolest quilt I've seen lately. I've seen these spider web quilt blocks before, but never all laid out like this! I think I'll have to try some now.

  15. I save so many teeny tiny scraps and usually just move them from one bin to another - I just can't part with them. Thanks for the link to the tutorial - this seems like the perfect solution for using them. Also - I really enjoy paper piecing. Any reason why this wouldn't work with a lightweight muslin foundation?

  16. isn't string piecing addictive? I always have at least one string project going for those days when I just need to sit mindlessly and sew something and let my thoughts wander. Your quilt is turning into a real beauty.

  17. I just love your quilt. I really like the color combination you used. It looks amazing.

  18. It's looking great - your 1/3 of the way further than I am :) I can see how this would really relax you - enjoy!

  20. I'm with Christina. I have never really liked the Spiderweb quilts that I have seen, but I love the brightness of yours. Just goes to show you that you can make anything look good if you use the right fabric. Can't wait to see it done. And I must confess that I caved today. I bought six yards of fabric at Joann's. I have walked out without it several times, and today I succumbed. (Hangs head in shame) But it is so pretty. = ) And it has been like 85 days since I bought fabric.

Precioso proyecto y original, muy bueno para "aprovechar" telas. También parece rápido de hacer.

La colcha de la que te hablé está a punto para acolchar.

  38. This is beautiful! I have the feeling it is one of those quilts that you feel you just need to make another block 'just to see' how it will look.

    ReplyDelete
  39. It's wonderful! A pink one would be fabulous, too.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I've loved these blocks since I first saw them on your blog - I have two on the go at the moment: one in "pretties" and one in brights with black/white stripe; and I'm thinking about one in various lime greens with black/white spot but not a spiderweb - just strips.

Your spiderwebs are so fresh - they're gorgeous (like all of your quilts).

  41. That is amazing! I just love your quilts!!! Thanks for sharing them with us!

  42. Beautiful job! I love that it's made from leftovers that would have been thrown away!

  43. Let me get this straight. You, Amandajean, are okay with letting a quilt take you all year.

Okay. Who are you and what have you done with my friend?!?!?

  50. This is totally unrelated to todays blog, but my computer crashed and I lost everything. I am trying to re-piece my favorites. I have found you, but I think I acquired a link from you and I can't remember the name of the site. Did you have a link to a video done by a gal, I think her name could've been Judy, and she was demo-ing how she quilts, which is kind of in a grid and she quilts a section and sort of scribbles up and down up and down, etc, all over within the grid, then she moves on to the next area and does the same.

Does that sound familiar to you, and if so, could you send me her name or repost or something? I loved that technique! Thank you!

it's so beautiful. I totally get why it's sewing therapy...but also can imagine it is going to take quite awhile to design and sew it. I guess that is why it's so beautiful :)

  54. Hi Amandajean,
what a beautiful quilt this will be!!! I already saved the pattern, I like it very much.

  56. I like that you're taking your time with this one and that you're enjoying the process so much. And I think one in pink would be just perfect for you.

  57. About the fabric values...

I see several places where you put a light-value fabric directly against the white. Does it read as distinctly different IRL? It's hard to see it in the small photo, but the hi-res one shows a fairly good contrast b/c of the patterns. Just wondering how distinct the spiderweb edge appears where that occurs.

    Thanks!

  58. katie k,

the lighter colors read more distinctly in real life. the larger this quilt gets, the harder it is to get a good detailed photo of the quilt.

    Amandajean,

Your spiderweb quilt is absolutely gorgeous. I love that you have been working on it for a while. I always thought that this would be a hard quilt top to make, then I linked to the tutorial. This pattern is definitely going on to my list of quilts to make.

  64. I love this quilt!!!!

Beautiful fabric choices, Amandajean. Keep us posted on your progress, okay?

    ReplyDelete
  65. That is oh so very cool! Never heard of this technique before but what a great introduction. =)

  66. I was so intrigued with this pattern that I had to go look at the tutorial. Then, the way that Bonnie made her "kite" piece just made me want to try it. So, I have 1/2 of a block done, and I'm off to go do the other half. This is more fun than I thought it would be! I love string quilts to start with, but even the sewing part is fun too!

Your spiderwebs are so bright and happy - what fun!

    ReplyDelete
  67. You're getting into "two of everything" mode now too, aren't you?
Pink would be lovely, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I love this! I was making one (a really long time ago), but it was paper piecing. I think I like it better this way.

I love that you said you are enjoying the process and taking your time. I think sometimes we do things in a hurry too much and don't enjoy making some quilts as much as we should. Deadlines make it too much like work.

  69. Omg, this is going to be fantastic!
