here are the measurements i used for the whirlygiggle blocks.
the width is 5 3/4"
the height on the left side is 3 3/4"
the height on the right side is 2 3/4"
i made another template (the exact same size) and labeled it for use for the bottom. because sometimes my mind plays tricks on me. and i wanted to do as little stitch ripping as possible. it worked wonderfully until i got to the solids. i had to rip stitches to repair one block. not too bad.

after i constructed my blocks, i needed to do a little trimming, as you can see.
final blocks ended up at 11".
the auction quilt top is almost done. yay!

the quilt in the previous post is something i am helping my friend Darcy make from my stash and scraps. (there is no pattern-it was all pieced improvisationally.) we started it last summer and now we just have the binding to go. i didn't whip it up over night. :)

i have had several questions about the next quilt along...it's coming...not sure when exactly, but i have the idea and a rough draft. I'm thinking it will be a baby size and will last about 4-5 weeks.

ReplyDeleteI made this block differently. I think your blocks need trimming because you have an extra 1/4" on the block... i.e. the top measurement plus the bottom measurement should equal the lengthwise measurement plus 1/2" (1/4" each side seam allowance)... in order for it to make it a square... but yours seems to have an extra 1/4" inch on it.. i think your white block piece will end up 1/4" narrower than the coloured block... i hope this helps! ReplyDeleteThe way I did it, which is SUPER super quick was to cut it all with the rotary cutter... I cut slight rectangles, ie 6" by 6 1/2"... this is from both the coloured fabric and the white fabric... then lay the rectangles down on my cutting mat. I then lined it up to cut my diagonals (which will be cut across the long side)... i just lay my cutting ruler across the block 2 1/2" inches in from either alternative side and sliced across the block (this makes the diagonal shape)... i was able to cut several blocks at a time like this without using a template at all... and because you have added the 1/2" the both blocks they end up a square with no trimming... i think i cut a whole quilt in under an hour! Hope this helps others (I don't have a blog to show you) but hopefully you can understand from my instructions!

I am feeling really bad here. Mine didn't need that trimming. I am looking at my template again, and it is more like 5 7/8, 3 3/4, 2 5/8. I measured a block from my quilt and gave you the measurement when you asked. I should have gone to the template instead. I am so sorry.
ReplyDeleteLike Amy explains, I cut out rectangles, and then put the template on to cut the angle. Mine were 5 7/8 x 6 3/8.
I am sure you are too far into this quilt to make the adjustment right now, but I wanted to clarify and apologize.

ReplyDeletethat's one way....there is a much easier way to make this block, rotary cut strips then cut, very easy in page 55 in ursula reikes book...More Quilts for Baby easy as ABC.....goes together sooo much quicker without much waste. Not sure if the book is still in print?
