magnificent maples quilt-the beginning

I started a new quilt last week. I've had the fabric pulled for well over a year--background fabric and everything. Last Tuesday was a BEAUTIFUL fall day, so I celebrated by whipping up this fun and easy maple leaf block, even though I only had 20 minutes to sew. It was time well spent!
I'm SO EXCITED for this quilt! I'm having a blast making the blocks and I am SMITTEN with this color scheme. I love that most of the fabrics are blenders, with a few louder (but not too loud) prints.
As of this afternoon, I have 25 blocks complete. I'm using Kona Natural for the background and each block will finish at 9".
Here is my original fabric pull. I've already edited out at least 7 fabrics and I've added that many more into the mix. I think it's funny how much my fabric decisions change once I get started. I've learned a long time ago that is usually the case, so I only cut a few blocks at a time to avoid chopping up a bunch of fabric that I won't actually use in the quilt.

Now I have to decide if I will repeat any fabrics or make each block out of a unique fabric. Either way, I think it's going to be magnificent...at least that's the hope! :)

Happy Monday to you!

Absolutely beautiful! I love the look of each leaf having different fabric and your "edited" color scheme is divine!

It is lovely, and the color palette is delightfully autumnal without being boring or predictable. So refreshing and warm at the same time.

You have made it this far without repeating; why not go for no repeats? Have fun in your stash!

The Kona Natural is a fantastic background. The colors capture a perfectly warm sunny but crisp cool air fall day for me.

The simplicity of the quilt is what is most beautiful to me. It's like walking into a quiet forest. Just love it!

I always think Canadian when I see maple leaves. Your quilt blocks are lovely. Just the right mix of blender and popper. And I’m so glad to hear that you never cut a whole quilt before you start sewing. It makes me happy to know that there are other quilters out there who are open to whimsical choices as they go along.

I love this block as well, maybe you will inspire me to finally do one!

I never, ever cut a whole quilt before sewing. I am always making changes as I go and many times have made cutting mistakes that would have been a disaster if I had chopped up all of my fabric ahead of time. I've always admired the maple leaf blocks but haven't made a quilt with them yet. I like the fact that you haven't used any fabric more than once. I would keep going with that idea.

I have my fabric pulls all done to make the Spiced Chai quilt - but this one looks great too!
Thanks a lot for making my decision harder! ;-)

This is so pretty Amanda. Love the fabric selection - very autumn-ish but not the usual colors one sees. You have a great eye for putting fabric together. It inspires me.

How about a more tossed look for the set? Then you could quilt it (hand or machine) with what look like wind gusts over the entire piece! Just a thought--

So pretty. Fall is a special time of year with all the colors. I also know what you mean about not cutting everything because my choices usually change along the way too. Have fun choosing the rest of the leaves.

Love it! Your colors are perfect. I made a maple leaf quilt as a gift once & I've wanted to revisit the pattern for myself one day.

This is really lovely. I have some autumnal fabrics leftover from another quilt and you have inspired me as to what to do with them.
