I managed to complete another quilt top this week! Hurray!
I selected this bundle of fabric several weeks ago as a part of my mighty lucky challenge on effective fabric selection. I will admit, it's an unlikely combination of fabrics. It's definitely out of my box. I was anxious to cut it up and sew it all back together, just to see what would happen.
Once I got into the project, I was pleased to see that all the colors and patterns worked well together. I was especially delighted with the pops of yellow in the mix. In fact, I ended up cutting additional yellow squares a few different times, because I really liked what they added.
Yesterday when I completed the quilt top, I held it up and I thought, "geez, this quilt is really long!" After some calculating, I realized that I had made the quilt 18 rows long rather than 15 rows long. Doh! My quilt top was 12" too long!!!
To fix it, I decided to add two more columns to the quilt, one on each side. Math mishaps happen. Haha! I just had to laugh at myself!!! It's a good thing I had plenty of extra fabric to round things out. :)
Now the quilt top measures 56" x 72", which is much more proportionate! I'm looking forward to quilting this one up!
(Fabrics are Brushstrokes by Holly DeGroot for Cloud 9, plus an assortment of fabrics from my stash.)
How about you? Do you have a finish to share this week? If so, please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you, as always, for joining me for finish it up Friday!
Awesome color selection! I do love a good simple patchwork.
ReplyDeleteYou are on a roll this week, Amanda! I love this quilt top and the fall inspired one too. They're both gorgeous, but so very different :)Thanks for hosting every week!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out very cute - and yes - Math Mistakes happen.... ha ha!
ReplyDeleteThis looks wonderful - colors are joyful and there are so many fun prints to look at. Is the darker purple polka dot a Michael Miller?
ReplyDeleteFor your challenge this month, I am taking a precut charm square pack that I have had forever. It is rather on the dark side tho. It is a Michael Miller and has that purple dot that you are using - if not that one, then something similar. Anyway, I am trying to add to it from my stash to brighten it up and to add some lighter values. Yikes, easier said than done. Thanks for providing a fun lesson on color this month!
I like the pops of dark purple in your quilt. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to step outside your comfort zone sometimes. You are right, the yellow really adds pop to the quilt. It's really lovely.
ReplyDeleteThis so makes me want to go sew up some simple patchwork. So fun!!!
ReplyDeleteYour Mighty Lucky challenge this month is the reason I signed up in January, and now that I have it, it was worth the wait! It's the best challenge so far! Today's quilt top is darling, too!
ReplyDeleteGreat fabric selection and I love how the yellow pops. GREAT job!
ReplyDeleteThere is something so pleasing about simple squares sewn together. And your fabric choices are always spot-on. Love this one!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. Well done!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been going through my stash and thinking about doing something similar. Love your fabrics.
ReplyDeleteNice fix on this lovely scrappy quilt! I keep wanting to make one of those - hmmmm!
ReplyDeleteI think sewing patchwork squares is so mesmerising that it's easy to just keep sewing! I love the brushstrokes prints ♡
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say thanks for this link up. Usually I have a finish and am anxious to post early in the day. Not this week. I have a couple of tops finished, but till need to quilt and bind, so maybe next week for them.
ReplyDeleteSince I usually visit your blog in the am, I don't get to see as many of the finishes. This afternoon I took time to visit each of the finishes. I enjoyed them all. Some I already follow, but some will be added to my list of blogs I follow.
Thanks and I hope you have a fantastic weekend.
Very pretty quilt top, I really light the bright colors. Yes yellow really adds something to quilts. Blessings, Gretchen And because I am often told I am a no-reply blogger - villacrestfarm@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt and the colors. Paula in KY
ReplyDeleteVery Pretty. Like the orchid purple in there. I'm not normally a purple person, but I like it................
ReplyDeleteThe colors you chose are so restful! I really like them! As usual, you have done another beautiful quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who makes those math mistakes! It's beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt top is beautiful! I love the colours! Now you have a bigger quilt to cuddle under. Which is great as your kids get bigger and taller.
ReplyDeleteThe fabrics are different from your usual selection, but it's still very 'you'. It looks great!
ReplyDeleteYour top looks like it came from a single coordinated line! Great job. And the simplicity let's all the bright fabric do the work too.
ReplyDeleteSo bright and pretty! Math mistakes....glad to know there are others out there. Once, a quilter told me when she is quilting and has to rip out stitches, she closes up shop and walks away till another day. I told her that if I did that, I would never get any quilting done! (She was not impressed, but others had a giggle.) :)
ReplyDeletelovely and bright ^^
ReplyDeleteSometimes the simplest patterns are the prettiest. The simple squares are beautiful! Needs a nice loopy quilting to balance out the lines. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteI love this quilt. It has such a nice comfortable, scrappy look. It makes me smile to look at it
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet, pretty quilt! I agree that the little pops of yellow are fantastic!! Congrats on another finish! This one totally makes me want to run into my sewing room and make one too!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I was wondering do you use pre-cut pieces like this: https://www.etsy.com/shop/madewithpleasure or do you cut everything yourself? I try to use pre cut as much as possible, save me time and it is very precise. But when I have orginal design ideas I have to cut them myself :)
ReplyDeleteGreat blog btw!
Haha, you're so funny, I would have probably taken the 3 extra rows off and made pillowcases with them, but you simply add more columns! :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful quilt top!!
Your color sense is amazing. Turned out so nice.
ReplyDeleteMath mishaps happen all the time to me... good to hear I am not alone in that!
ReplyDeleteThis is just beautiful. As a new quilter, I love popping in for inspiration! Ros
ReplyDeleteI agree; the yellow makes a really nice pop.
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Great look in the finished top!
