epic quilt in progress

My epic Denyse Schmidt quilt is coming along nicely! I currently have 49/90 blocks made.
This fabric is kind of magical. Some of the prints, on their own are kind of ugly (sorry to say it!)....but when you put them all together, something magical happens! It's the craziest thing. Those magentas and citron greens really add a lot of zip to the quilt. The darks do, too.
Each of the squares were cut at 12 1/4'', then cut on the diagonal, twice, to make quarter square triangles. I mixed all of the triangles up and started sewing them back together, randomly. I love how this quilt is shaping up! I can't wait to stipple it!

Even though some of this fabric is pretty old, there is still some Hope Valley and Chicopee prints available (at normal prices!) at Cia's Palette. There are plenty of other old goodies there, too! Sorry to be a fabric enabler... :)

  1. I love how scrappiness can include even the "ugly" fabrics and make them beautiful!!

  2. Lol I agree about some of the prints and how somehow the stranger colors make a pretty patchwork combination. It's looking great!

  4. It's looking lovely! I can definitely see some of the prints would not look good on their own but they blend very nicely here :-)

  6. Love your scrappy quilt. I noticed near the top of your picture where a few of your darker fabrics are, there is even a pinwheel formed. Cool.

  7. your quilt is coming along beautifully. I thought it interesting what you said about the fabrics looking better together. I had a similar experience with Jen Kingwell's Gardenvale. I was quite disappointed when my fabric arrived by mail but as I started putting the blocks together the fabric started to 'glow'. You can have a look at what I am talking about here if you like although the design wall pic doesn't really show the 'glow'. Hopefully I can do it justice when I get the quilting finished

  10. I love DS fabrics and had been collecting them for quite awhile. I finally cut into them and made a queen sized quilt, but have lots left. I might just have to do this too.

  13. Looking good! I chuckled about the individual uglies. I have a FQ bundle from Jen Kingwell and there are some homely fabrics in there too! :D

  15. It's beautiful! My guild had an Ugly Fat Quarter challenge last year. The FQ's were put into brown bags, if you brought one you took a bag. I used that ugly FQ (really ugly) in a quilt like yours. It's my favorite quilt. It's time I looked for more uglies in my stash and magpie another. Thank you for the inspiration!t

I love seeing scrappy quilts like this, and thinking "I've got that fabric, I've got that fabric .......". So maybe now I'll be inspired to use it!

  18. I really like your quilt. Would it be possible to make the same design but using HST's instead of 4 different triangles? Am a beginner and would like to make it as easy as possible.

  20. Your quilt is just beautiful! I think it takes real talent to make a "scrap" quilt come together as nicely as your quilt has!

  26. It is gorgeous! Sometimes we just have to sew triangles, don't we...instead of units, like hst or qst, etc!:) thanks for the reminder!

  27. Just gorgeous, love scrap quilts. Now many blocks did you have to make for your large quilt. Be interesting to see how you will quilt it.

  28. I love the quilt and was wondering why you cut the squares into triangles first instead of making HST's and then sewing the HST's to make the four HST's in the block?
