bucket list

I've been thinking a lot about what would be on my quilt bucket list, if I were to have one. After much consideration, here are my top 5:

1. Dotty Dresden. As seen on the cover of Material Obsession. There is so much to love about this quilt!

2. Double Wedding Ring. It's a classic and I'd love to try my hand at it, but it scares me to no end! I think that's a sure sign that I should just jump right in and start it.

3. Tiny 9 patch. As seen in the Feb. 2008 issue of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. I'd love to make it huge! Like full or queen size. In the quilt shown, each of the little 9 patches finish at 2.25"!
4. Another spider web. I absolutely loved  the process of making my first one. I dream of having a pair of single beds in room somewhere in my house with matching spider web quilts on them. I guess I'm half way there...as far as the quilts go, at least. :)

5. English Paper Pieced Stars. I've got a good start, just need to see it to completion.

I guess I have a bucket list now. And a substantial one at that! :)

So, what's on YOUR quilty bucket list? I'd love to know!

  1. Amanda Jean, you have a wonderful list. I actually started a Double Wedding Ring quilt a few years ago using templates by Sharlene Jorgenson. It is a do-able quilt pattern. One of these days I will finish this blue and white beauty. Maybe in 2012 :-)

  2. Right now I have a bucket list of knitting and crochetting some before Christmas. Yikes. I decided to put off my quilting bucket list till the spring
    1. Circle quilt (seen on this blog)
    2. Big bandana quilt
    3. Small bandan quilt
    4. Christmas quilt (not this year)
    5. Triangle quilt (seen on this blog)
As I continue following your blog my bucket list grows :)

  3. A DWR, Denyse's Single Girl, and a Dear Jane quilt are on my quilty bucket list! Each of them scare me, but I hope one day to make them. Maybe I'll start one of them next year? Great post, love your blog!

  4. The double wedding ring is on my list too. I think I need to buy the acrylic templates for that one! And something with applique. Applique scares me. My friend Carolyn keeps telling me that it's not that bad... but for some reason I just can't bring myself to start a big applique project.

  5. A Dresden plate quilt, spiderweb quilt, flock of geese paper piecing quilt (the ones that go in a circle) and to finish my yoyo quilt. Luckily I have a long time to accomplish that which resides on my bucket list! Great post!

  6. My quilting bucket list includes:
1)an improvisational, minimalist quilt, (do you know how hard that "minimalist" thing is for some of us?)
2)a two color (red/white? blue/white? green/blue?) queen-size Drunkards Path or Magic Circles quilt and
3)a lone star string quilt. How's that for scary??? Much scarier for me than a wedding ring!

  7. I have two bucket list quilts that I can think of off the top of my head: A paper pieced flying geese quilt where the geese are flying in curves and a very modern looking quilt as you go quilt using solids.

I have lots of things that I want/plan to make, but the two that are the most scary are the double wedding ring and the single girl! Eventually I just have to dive in and make one of each!

    that dotty dresden
learn how to do hexies so i can make a grandmothers flower garden...
    ds's single girl

that tiny 9 patch scares me!

  10. Cool list of quilts to make! Very ambitious too, but that's how you roll!

    On my quilting bucket list:
-First I would like to finish all the quilts in progress I have laying around my house!
-I would like to make a quilt with each collection by my favorite fabric designer. (That means about 6 more quilts!)

  11. Since I've become a blog-reading-addict my bucket list has become longer and longer. All of the comments above and then some, except the ring quilt. I've made a small version of that one and didn't enjoy it! I have a book (with me always) and just write down the ideas that I see for quilts-I-will-make-one-day!

  12. Ocean Waves with a red solid background
Amazing all solids modern graphic quilt
Antique looking large quilt with little teeny tiny stars
Appliqué quilt made with modern fabric each block an original design by me

  13. I started my Dresden plate quilt this morning...it's number 1 on my list. I also want to the an Amish braid and a stacked coin as well as one that looks like argyle.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I would like to do a traditional sampler quilt with tons and tons of applique. I have the fabrics stashed in my closet (I got them for my birthday from my mom and sister) and just need to find the right pattern/design it myself.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. The "geometric double wedding ring" design I made up because I'm ascared of curves.
    2. Cathedral window Quilt, LARGE.

And that's all the longer my list is yet. I don't even know what I want yet!

    ReplyDelete
  16. A Log Cabin and a Dresden plate. Two classics that are timeless.

  17. Love your list!

    Mine includes:
    1. Dresden--actually have this one partly done, have all the petals done just need to get sewin!
    2. Double wedding ring
    3. Snail Trail
    4. Dear Jane
    5. Bargello

I've started being more aware of the projects I start, I find the end results are more rewarding when planned rather than spur of the moment.

  18. the epp stars is my in-progress quilt. so addictive! (and George is adorable)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm working on my Dresden over on the Old Red Barn Co Flickr group. It's slow actually, but going to be lovely. I couldn't get the actual fabric (red and white spots) in New Zealand, but my version will be fine :) On my bucket list is a Lone Star quilt, I think I want to master that one day, and a flying geese quilt a la Blooming Workshop.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My list grows with each blog post, quilt or book magazine I read! On my quilt bucket list right now are:

    1930s quilt
    Civil War quilt
modern art quilt (a la Nancy Crow)
    Hawaiian quilt
    quilt using Hmong embroideries
    one using Australian aboriginal-designed fabrics
    African fabric quilt
    Northwoods-themed quilt for my DH
Outer Space-themed quilt for my DH

Gosh. I'll have to live to be a very active 100-year-old, or these will have to be really, really small quilts!

  21. I started a dotty dresden, so I should probably finish it. I, too, have plans to do a double wedding ring quilt. Then I have a pickle dish I want to do. I found a paper piecing template online. I want to do a Baby Jane. I have saved a billion tiny triangles left over from binding and other things. I'd like to do a tiny HST quilt with those. I also want to do the piece 'o cake polka dot circles quilt. I've been saving polka dots for a LONG time. Well, that's the short list, but of course, knowing me, there's definitely a long list too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. You mean there are quilts out there you haven't made????!
Top of my bucket would be a postage stamp quilt, it's just the thought of all that cutting, piecing and ironing that scares me....

    ReplyDelete
  23. Love that dresden. I also want to make a single girl quilt (maybe in about thirtyyears) and a joseph's coat.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Double Wedding Ring..that's on my list. I started one and put it away.

I'd love to make a scrappy postage stamp quilt.

But the one that I've wanted to make for a long time is here ...http://www.windhamfabrics.net/cgi-bin/fabricshop/projects.cgi?patternID=201 but in brighter colors.

    Maybe someday!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Looks like I'm going to have to start one as I sure got a lot of ideas from reading on your blog today.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I used to say to a friend of min- I think I have one of those in me. I just need to write them all down. I love crossing things off a list. Maybe that would get me focused.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've always wanted to try a double wedding ring and I jumped right in recently when I found out a friend was getting married.

I've always admired Baltimore Album quilts but needle turn appliqué scares me. I also really love the Hawaiian quilts but ditto with the appliqué fear. Maybe it's time I tried it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Great list.

My list would include Hawaiian, Single Girl, scrapy log cabin, zig zag rail fence and finish all the quilts I have started.

    ReplyDelete
  29. One quilt that has been on my 'bucket list' is...a Dear Jane; I know call me crazy, but I think it would be very interesting and challenging.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ohhhhh the quilty bucket list is LONG!
8 baby quilts to make for this coming year!!
Curio quilt for a 'client' friend
Swoon done in Hometown (inspired by one I saw online - GORGEOUS!)
Bloom's Summer Blush (JUST bought the pattern)
    too many more to list!

I realllly want to try some dresdens too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love your list .... I think it is my list too !!
Except for the dotty dresden , which I made earlier this year ( in orange ) xx

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm afraid my list would be too long :) I used to be afraid to make a Wedding Ring quilt also, then I did it a couple of years ago. It took me f.o.r.e.v.e.r., and I can honestly say I don't think I will make another one. However, it turned out great. You should just do it!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Great list. I'm not sure I have one, but I have to say you can totally make the double wedding ring. I made one about 14 years ago when I was still quite new to quilting and I don't remember it being difficult, just time consuming and hopefully I'd be better and faster now. Go for it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. OMG! I have that 2008 magazine ( thrift store .10 great find) and I have that quilt marked as a TO DO!!!!! I really want to try a Mariner's compass.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oh I am sure your versions of those will be wonderful!
I made a dresden quilt inspired by MO this year: http://ellisonlane.blogspot.com/2011/07/dreaming-under-dresdens.html

As for my bucket list: a king size quilt for our bed (still unsure of what pattern to do)

then learn to sew some clothing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Funny you should ask. I have the same book and my red and white dotted material ready to go. For about 6 months now. It will happen some day. I have a fat eight of Lil apples waiting patiently to happen, and I really want to make a red and white school house quilt. I have a lot more too but you have more to do than read this. Thanks for you inspiration.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hmmm....I have always wanted to do a double wedding ring because it is pretty much my favorite.

I have all the fabric to do a Tennessee waltz for my bed and have had for 4 years, I think. Still haven't done it.

I have been eyeballing The Farmer's Wife.

I want to do a Lonestar.

I want to do a scrappy triple Irish chain in 30s repro fabrics.

I have been collecting fabrics to do a red and white.

I want to do so many things....except a Dresden plate or a Grandmother's Flower Garden. Neither of those appeal to me at all.

    I better stop there.

  38. Not sure what would be on mine, but I totally agree about the Dotty Dresden! Can't get enough of their quilts!

  40. Double Wedding Ring was on my quilting bucket list, but I finally broke down and pieced one this summer. Now my bucket list is just to finish the dozen quilts that are in various states.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm getting married this weekend (eep!), and my fantasy for last summer was to make a double ring quilt in time for the wedding, so we could take neat wedding photos in front of it. Oh well, I will make it for an anniversary (maybe the 5 year, hah hah).

I would also like to finally finish sewing the binding to a quilt that I'm already using, and to finish a baby quilt before my sister-in-law gives birth in 2 months. I think those are do-able after the holidays!

I also have a great idea for a quilt with a white background, with circles of different sizes appliqued on top, in a color gradient. I am pretty sure I ripped it off of someone's quilt blog, but I can't remember which. The idea is sketched on a post-it, stuck to my computer, and I always stare at it longingly when I am supposed to be doing work. It will be so much fun to pick all the colors! And not too time-consuming to piece, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Double wedding ring for sure.
A really scrappy quilt ( like tons of fabric and all types). A Baltimore Album.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You know, I had never thought to write a list!
Yes the Dresden one, yes the double wedding ring but also Swoon, Single Girl and something reproductiony with an inherited stash if you can supply ideas....

    Love your work!
    Lexi

  44. Hola! Saludos desde Finlandia! I love your quilts! It's so nice to find other quilters all around the world! :)

  45. Oh yours is a good list. Here's mine;
    1. Double Wedding Ring - for the same reason as you... the thought makes me a little nervous, that makes me curious..
    2. Georgetown Turnaround - google it, it is flipping gorgeous!! I have the pattern, but I'm waiting for the right time.
    3. Curlique Quilt, small drunkard path pieces - i have all the pieces cut from a beautiful French General fabric all stacked in order and ready to go. Big job.
    4. Finish the 11 UFOs I have.
    That's it
    xx

  46. What an awesome list CrazyMom! I love this post -- I'm thinking I'll have to follow suit soon -- what a fun thing to think about. I can't wait to see your bucket list come to life!!! ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  47. I've definitely got one or two ufo's that are on my bucket list to finish. And a nice applique. But what I'm curious about now, and have to go google, is a Single Girl quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  48. #1 on my list a wedding ring quilt!! I am gathering up 30's prints and that is what I want to do with them!! There is just something about it that jumps out at me! But it scares me that a seasoned quilter fears it!! (I am a newbie) But maybe being blisfully unaware will work to my advantage! LOL

    Here are mine too:
1 - Garden Party, a pattern from Kathy Doughty's (Material Obsession) shop, that features a variety of dresden plates,
2 - Hanging Latterns from Sarah Fielke's latest book, it's a sensational quilt,
3 - Another Australian, Kellie Wulfsohn's Worry Dolls, made to reference all the family,
    4 - The Waverunner Quilt,
    5 - A Word Quilt.

    Thanks, Katrina

  50. The diamond star is on my bucket list too. I'd like to do a Hawaiian quilt some day too, but Santa'd have to grant me an extra bucket or two (or 12) of patience for that one!

    ReplyDelete
  51. At the top of my list is a zigzag quilt using your tutorial...and I think I will use my "Garden Party" bundle for that :)
And after that, I am with Terriaw who said she wanted to make a quilt with fabric from each of her favorite designers...so I have a Kate Spain quilt on the list, too...now to find the perfect pattern :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Definitely a double wedding ring too. As for others... the only thing that comes to mind is a completely hand pieced and quilted quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ooooh...that tiny 9 patch is on my list too! Also, a whole cloth quilt...hand quilted and a scrappy red white and blue log cabin made with thin strips. I could go on...

    ReplyDelete
  54. a ragtime quilt, an airplane quilt, a cross quilt, a charm quilt (each block is different) and a row quilt (each quilt has a different block for that row)

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a great list! I have the double wedding ring on mine and just ordered the die for my GO cutter thinking that would get me started. I was thinking of tiny nine patches in rainbow colors as well. After that I SO want to try a tiny paper pieced log cabin quilt and a basket block perhaps.....I guess Dear Jane should be on the list as well though nearly insane might be too scary. Right now it is all about midget blocks. Wow, I guess that is quite a list. Good think I've got a bit of time before i think about kicking the bucket!

    ReplyDelete
  56. 1. A Cathedral Window quilt
    2. A log cabin quilt for my bed
    3. A heirloom quilt for each one of my five children
    4. A quilt made with Flea Market Fancy
    5. A Christmas quilt.

See not much in bucket! LOL!!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. I started a Dear Jane is solids a few years back... I'd love to see it finished but doubt I ever will!

Mariner's compass, double wedding ring, dresden plate, sunbonnet Sue, storm at sea, civil war, one block wonder, also design a lot more with batiks, finish a quilt with all second-hand materials.
Reading the comments about tripled my list!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh, my, where does one begin?
    1. Learn how to use my long-arm machine and get these flimsies all done
    2. A Celtic quilt
    3. A bargello
    4. Design and make a quilt from a photo of a painting I have

That's probably enough to keep me going for a while, don't you think!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bucket list, hmm. 1, A king size quilt for my lovely restored cast iron Victorian bed, the best piece of furniture I ever bought. Can't decide the design. 2, re-cover an antique family quilt made in the 30's for my great grandmother which is badly frayed and worn. It is a Durham Quilt, so called for the part of the North East Of the UK where it originates from, traditionally whole cloth quilts hand quilted in beautiful designs (sounds out of my skill level doesn't it?) 3, a knitted jumper for my husband. He is extra large and I've never knitted anything larger than a toddler's sweater. 4 new curtains in a Sanderson fabric handed down, again from my grandmother. I remember it hanging in her house when I was a child.
All projects which are important but a little bit daunting, which is why I have never started them.

  61. I love reading everybody's lists! Your list is great. I too want to do a dresden plate quilt, I love that block. I also want to do something with applique, I have yet to try it. And a Lonestar quilt, they have such a visual punch. Good luck on your list!

  64. cathedral windows. love them, but not brave enough yet.

    love you, too :)

    ReplyDelete
  65. Actually, your list mirrors a chunk of mine! :D I'm saving up polka dot prints for my dotty. I have 90ish string pieced DWR bands-I just need to put it all together...
I still want to make a broken star quilt. I'm handpiecing a 6 point star quilt, so it'll probably end up as another hand piece job. Hopefully the stars get completed in a shorter time than my GFG in 30's prints!
I definitely want to make the 9 patch you listed-I have that magazine & the pattern is flagged :) I'd also like to make a postage stamp quilt. I like stuff with small blocks, but my attention span is horrible!

  67. My bucket list includes a dresden/grandmother fan quilt made from fabric saved from my actual grandmothers old aprons. The very "heriloom" quality of that project scares me enouth that i havent' started!
