my favorite quilt

Amy is hosting an amazing quilt festival and is asking people to share their favorite quilt. It's so hard to choose a favorite quilt...I would have an easier time listing my top 5. TODAY, I would say, my favorite is my plain spoken quilt. I blogged about it way back here.

I love that it's only made up of solids. I love the quilting, which was fun but intense. It was one of the first quilts that I quilted that had no puckers in it. That was an extremely big deal to me. I love that it matches my house so well. I just pulled it out of the quilt cupboard again last week during my seasonal quilt rotation. I love that it's versatile-it's a twin size but I also use it for a lap quilt.
This quilt marks the beginning of my journey into modern quilting. I remember when I first came across the book The Modern Quilt Workshop, where this pattern is found. That book rocked. my. world. I can't tell you just how much. Before seeing that book, I didn't know that quilts could be modern! It seems a little funny now, with modern quilts all over blog land. But at the time, I was astounded and thrilled at the concept. It was a far cry from the very traditional quilts that I had seen up until that time and it excited me to no end. And as you can tell, I've pretty much been hooked on modern quilting since.
Oh, and one more fun thing, Bill Kerr, the co-author of the book actually commented on my blog post that featured this quilt.

  4. I am sure it was hard to choose from all your wonderful quilts. I like the simplicity and yet sophiscation of this quilt.

  5. Lovely. All the solid quilts out there are really stirring up my need to make one too.

  6. I love the color combo!

  7. Stunning quilt. I went back to see the author's comment. Bet that was fun to get!

  8. LOVE those colors! Being a fairly new reader of your blog, I hadn't seen this quilt before.

I gotta say this cold morning, it makes me want to pull it off the back of your comfy looking couch and wrap myself in it. Maybe with a good book? Traditional or modern, quilts have that affect on me.

  9. I love your quilt!

My quilt tastes have changed with time. I used to be a pretty traditional kind of girl, preferring basic two, maybe three, colored quilts with good old fashioned blocks. And then our local quilt store opened which focuses on contemporary fabrics and quilts and art quilting. And then I discovered your blog, and well, I find my tastes shifting more and more all the time. I love that a grand old craft has continued to be applicable to today's modern world, design, tastes, etc. I think that's what has recently sucked me into knitting too...the new updated, modern applications for a grand old craft.

    It's just all so lovely.

  10. Pretty colors, pretty quilt. Love your quilting! This quilt has a restful and classic "personality", one to not tire of easily. It is nice sometimes to look back at one's quilting journey, and notice the changes of directions one makes...

  11. I'm so glad you posted this quilt. I am currently working on a plain spoken for my husband for Christmas in the colors of his alma mater (blues, greys, white).

  12. My tastes have changed drastically since I began quilting over ten years ago. I love the new modern fabrics and less structured quilting techniques--kind of making it up as you go along. And I totally know what you mean about Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle. Amazing! And how fun to have him comment on your blog. Anyway, I think this quilt is stunning in its simplicity.

  14. I love your quilt! I love all solid quilts, I don't know why I haven't done one yet. But, you have inspired me to do one soon! I had the same experience with "The Modern Quilt." It turned my world upside down. I always loved the idea of quilts, but I didn't really start to LOVE quilts until I saw modern quilts. It does seem crazy now that they are all over the place, but I still remember the feeling so vividly.

  15. This is such a beautiful quilt! I love the quilting... I've wanted to try that myself. I'd want to leave this quilt on the couch all year round hehe

I enjoyed the discussion of Modern Quilts. It does seem that more young folks are beginning to enjoy the beautiful art of quilting. My favorite quilt is one my Mom made, Double wedding ring, a long time ago. It is my only quilt. I am in the process of making a simple block quilt since it is my first one. I have sewed all the adult life and at 72 just now doing a quilt. Thanks for sharing.

  19. I love everything about your "modern" quilt. It would match my house, too.

  20. It is a truly lovely quilt. All of these solids I keep seeing - I really need to get a solid quilt made. V said she'd host a "class" for us!

  21. Gorgeous (as all your quilts)!! It reminds me of the "Shoebox" pattern by Atikinson Design that I made last year. Mine probably would have looked better in all solids too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. I love your quilt and that it's made from only solids. I have a box with all the Kona cotton solids (present from husband some years ago), they are so much fun to work with and go with absolutely everything.
I have that book to; it has so many great designs.
How fun that the author commented to your post.

  23. When I saw this quilt I fell in love! The colors are fantastic and match my home perfectly (must be why I fell in love with it). I also like the way it is all solids. I have been thinking of creating a quilt made of only solids but was told by a woman at the fabric store the quilt would be lifeless...your quilt has blown her theory right out of the water!

  24. Cool quilt. It's very soothing. You said the quilting was intense, but I couldn't see it very well, so I'm wondering what design you did on it. Good job!

P.S. I love your scrappy star quilts a few posts below. Beautiful! I've been wanting to make the perfect red, white and blue quilt and that one fits the bill.

  25. I really like that quilt of yours too. Can i borrow it? Just run it over ok? ;-)

  28. I love that quilt - it is really pretty...and the fact that it is all solids makes it even more fun.

    You did good!

  29. Never seen such a striking quilt out of solids! Bravo.

  30. Beautiful as always! Looks like fall.

  31. Awesome quilt and I love to read stories about how people started quilting and what inspired them. It's great that a book can do that and that you found you calling!!

  35. At some point I'd love to hear more about your quilt storage -- do you do anything in particular to preserve them between uses?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great choice! I love that pattern and the solid fabrics really make this pattern exciting. I love the fabric you picked. What fabric line did you use? I made a baby quilt sized one and it was so hard to give it away. I have wanted to make a big one for myself ever since. Someday...

  37. Love that simplicity and the warm colors you used. I just made one of Weeks/Kerr quilts from AP&Q Feb 09 mag for my daughter, called Zen. Theirs was in blue batiks, mine in browns. It had the same quilting pattern you used, which is so effective and easy to do (even for a non-longarmer like me). Thanks for sharing.

  38. A great example of beauty from a simple design. Your colors are great. There was a dusting of snow here today. Your quilt would be wonderful to curl up with.

  39. Plain Spoken has always been a favorite pattern of mine. If we were asked for our favorite book, I would have chosen this one. I probably should have chosen my plain spoken for the quilt show - Alas I really like if not love quite a few of my quilts!

  40. I love your quilting on this one, thanks for the inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I've always loved the colors you used in this quilt. I really need to get my hands on that quilt book--I think it would change my world!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love this quilt too! I would like to make a quilt with all solids one day as well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Great quilt and I know what you mean about that book. When I got it, I thought, ok, if someone wants a modern quilt, I'll have the resouce to go to. I love your colours in this one.

I'm off to put the book in my favourites so I can buy it with Christmas gift cards. Love your quilt!

  46. I love this one, there's just something about solids. I felt the same way about quilts when I discovered quilting blogs devoted to quilts that weren't too traditional. I would have NO interest in quilting without modern quilts like this one!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Beautiful quilt!
I have the book too and have been wanting, but waiting to make "plain spoken." I don't know why. I am going to put it on the front burner!

  51. Your quilt is beautiful. It has inspired me to make one too. I was trying to decide what fabric to use and came across a bunch of Cherrywood Solid fabrics that I think will look beautiful.
    Thanks for the inspiration.

  52. I LOVE your quilt! I made a "Plain Spoken" quilt this last summer. I love the quilting that you chose too. I was going to try the quilting just like that, but I'm still terrible at the quilting part of quilting! Look at my version here: http://the-snow-family.blogspot.com/2009/07/i-never-want-to-see-another-rectangle.html

  86. Hi! I clicked through to the rest of your blog and had a great time looking at all your quilts and enjoying your creativity. One of my favorites was Ticker Tape! Did you dream this up, or were you inspired by other things in your quilting life?

Your quilt on the Blogger Quilt Festival is very restful. I've been all over the map and in my quilting career--from very traditional, to stark modern, back to sampler, then to scrappy. I head for the design that pops into my head. It used to be there was only one way, but now, with the internet, we can see so many ways. I'm adding your blog to my favorites on my Google reader--hope that's okay! Terrific blog!

  93. I just got Modern Quilt workshop, and I need to do at least 4 of their designs. But my problem is actually picking out the fabric. I would love some tips. I have all boys so they aren't too crazy about all the girly pattern fabric out there. Solids are perfect.
