i feel the need to celebrate

For months now I've been having some problems with my free motion quilting. My darning foot was not floating over my quilt as it should. Rather, it was smashing the quilt, even with the presser foot tension at the highest level. The quilt layers distorted and it was making anything with plenty of seams difficult to quilt. I always got by, but as time went on, it became more of a struggle. Quilting is supposed to get progressively easier, not harder, right? I was about to take my machine in to have it serviced and adjusted. I had had enough.

THEN....yesterday, I got an e-mail from Deb pointing me to this website. I read through most of it. When I read this post (specifically check out the photos, not the videos), I knew I had the answer to my problem! Yipee! Did you know that you can modify your free motion foot? I didn't break any pieces off my foot (eeek!) but I did place a few layers of corrugated cardboard in order to compress the spring on the foot a bit. Now my machine glides over the quilt top with ease! I can't tell you how much easier it is to quilt now. Amazing, I tell you. AMAZING!!! I quilted an entire baby quilt yesterday afternoon and the cardboard didn't shift a bit.

In honor of this exciting event (trust me, it made my week!) I am going to be giving away some flea market fancy fabric. One half yard of each of the green and the orange pictured below.

No need to become a follower, no need to blog or twitter about it. Just leave me a comment with your name, where you are from and your favorite quilting tip or your favorite quilting gadget. If you don't quilt, you can let me know what your favorite color is. It will make reading the comments much more interesting than reading, "pick me!" over and over.

As always, thanks for reading. xo

Hi, I'm Karen and I'm from Ontario. My favourite quilting tool is the quilting gloves with the grippies so that quilting is easier.

I really hope I win. I LOVE this fabric and I can't afford to buy any right now.

My favorite quilting tip- its not exactly a gadget is to have lots of chocolate if during the day and a glass (not too much!!!) of wine in the evening. Makes it so much more fun. Good tunes help too :)
My favorite color is purple! Love all colors too- that's why I quilt!

I am Kristy from Cincinnati, Ohio and my favorite tool is my rotating olfa cutting mat. It is awesome because it allows you to square up a block without ever lifing the block...just turn the turnable. The greatest thing is that I inherited it from my mom, so I think of her often. Beyond that I am happy to know my daughter Kate will inherit all my tools and stash and will enjoy them and think of me one day...therefore motivating me to buy even more fun stuff :)

hi amanda-jean, glad you found a solution. Gosh how long has you been putting up with that problem?? My favorite gadjet at the moment is the clover yo-yo makers, so quick and easy...i hate cutting circles out!! and a tip i read is when quilting , pin a peice of gingham check fabric and use the squares as a guide to keep your stitches evenly spaced if your not very good at it like i'm not! sue~n.z.

Great tip! My favorite tip would be to try...I am scared to try new colors or designs and after I do, I love it! You inspire me, thanks for your blog.

Checking out your blog is one of my favorite things to do these days. Because of you I purchased a darning foot for my machine and I'm going to attempt to use it (one of these days). I also love my quarter inch foot.

I happen to have a love/hate relationship with walking feet -I love what they can do but always find that they tend to catch on me - the lever that goes on the bar to move the feet along tends to rub and jam in the up position so that it "walks with a limp" - a simple modification of rubberbands has cured that and now I am much much happier and can stitch in the ditch to my heart's content.

I'm Jan from the mountains of north Georgia. My favorite quilting item is FABRIC. My favorite color combos change frequently, but right now I am loving brown, aqua, coral and olive green.

Not to be funny - but my 2 year old is my favorite tool. He will sit there with me and help me lay out quilt tops, sometimes changing them, sometimes just saying "good mommy". They always turn out great with his help!

It's the little things! I'm glad you're able to fix your foot~my very favorite quilting technique is 1/2 square triangle paper (yes, I guess it's more of a notion than a gadget), but it ensures PERFECT squares every time! As far as where I'm from, Chico~California~we're about 100 miles north of Sacramento. Enjoy your weekend ~ Dorrie

Thank you for doing this. I'm just starting to quilt but have not yet begun a project. Right now I am just reading what I need to know before I start. My 2 favorite tips are using painter's tape to sew straight and reading your blog because I find it inspiring and very helpful!

Thanks for sharing (as always!). I just started quilting to I don't really have a favorite gadget yet. I do really love my sewing machine (her name is Ida) and I was going to say I don't have a favorite color but nearly everything in my house is green so it wins.

Kylie said...

I have no tips except I think everybody should sew every day! That is wishful thinking for me after I've spent the day cleaning after the 3rd dust storm! But I did uneart some fabric scraps that I thought I'd lost, so it may have been worthwhile! And some of it was blue and some green - my favouritest colours! (sorry! Worn out with the cleaning). Keep blogging!

Denice said...

I'm Denice and i'm from utah. the coolest quilting trick i just learned is this: did you know every needle has a front and back? how many times have i struggled to thread a needle? sometimes its easy and sometimes no matter what i do the thread wont go through. needles are punched, so if the thread wont go through, turn the needle over to the front and TADA! your needle will thread instantly!

Quiltsmiles said...

Thanks, My absolute favorite quilting tip is one I learned from Dawn Ramirez, the dry erase board. As well as to practice the quilt design with a marker, before you start quilting with fabric and thread. It helps with the muscular memory and it seems to really help me.

Kindof makes me sad to see you only get this many comments when you're giving something away... but I do like that fabric too! =) My favorite quilting tool is my "Machingers" gloves for free-motion, they are terrific! I thought the lady at the quilt store was just trying to sell me something else... but then I tried them. =) Oh, and my favorite color is pink, too! Once again, love the inspiration from reading your blog!

Wow - with over 600 comments you should have enough tips and trick to write a book :o)

I think my favourite "gadget" is my sewing machine mat with pockets for holding all the spares one needs while sewing.

Love my quarter inch foot! I think I need to be more free with my quilting and your blog gives me the inspiration. Oh and I go through periods where I love dark and dirty colors and then I am on to brights. I am so fickle.

Glad your foot is working again!! What a great site - thanks for sharing it with us :)

I love the green fabric (green is my favourite colour) - it sort of looks like holly with berries to me.

the things I learn everyday from blogs is amazing - never knew you could alter a foot like that. Glad you have solved your issue.......

Jackie's Stitches said...

Congratulations at figuring out the problem! I was going to try that trick on my GrandQuilter. It was just a bit tight- not as much as yours.

What is surprising me is how much I'm loving brown with quilting. I don't wear brown. I do not have even one brown bag or pair of brown shoes. But I simply just love brown fabric! Weird. Of course, all my other favorite colors (pink, red, burgandy) make sense to me!

Cute fabric! I have only free motion quilted on one quilt. I was so nervous but it turned out really good. I bought myself a darning foot and am still too scared to try another one. Maybe that super cute fabric would inspire me. :) Thanks for the fun giveaway. PS my favorite color is blue.

I love all colors! I find myself drawn to quilts with unusual combinations that just work somehow. When making my daughter's ghost costume yesterday I decided that I truly loved my rotary cutter (I needed it and it was missing).

My small, isolated Nevada town has a small quilt shop. I can't always afford the higher quality fabric, but love to intermix it with less expensive cottons.

Hello! Jen who lives in Stoughton, Wisconsin by way of Massachusetts...I think my favorite quilting gadget is my 2 1/2 inch binding buddy...I use it to cut strips for binding as well as strips for batching squares together. I find that 2 1/2 inches is a good beginning size...

Oh, favorite color? Orange, for sure.

I'm Jen and currently live in Fallon, NV (Navy wife; so we move A LOT!) One of my favorite quilting tools would have to be my walking foot. But I also like my rotary cutter & mat, and my tiny little scissors that I use to cut all my threads (since I don't have a machine that cuts them for me!) My favorite color changes frequently but I love blues and browns and greens.

Okay, Amandajean, you asked for it, here goes. My favorite notion is the purple thang. Yes, you read it right... thang! Love the flea market fabric and love your blog. My tips: I wash all fabrics immediately, cut off selvages (big selvage fan), then I press, cut blocks, stay stitch, AND spray starch. Sounds horrible but I just whipped something up over the weekend that is fantastic.

My favorite quilting tip is spray adhesive for the quilt sandwich!! I have done it the hard way using rounded basting pins and this is so, so much easier! I love your tutes, BTW - I made the stacked coin baby quilt and its a hit!!
