new to me quilting

after stumbling upon this post yesterday, i tried branching out-from stippling.
sometimes i shock myself!
i was so pleased with how this quilting looked on my practice piece that i started on my oh cherry oh quilt.
it's going to take awhile.
i have quilted 5 bobbins worth and have just completed 3 blocks.
but i'm loving it!!!
---
today is day 53 of the quilt along. my total blocks made...still at 60. :)

WOW! I watch your blog all the time but I have never left a comment. I am amazed with how daring you are to try your new techniques so quickly. I think that is why you learn new quilting methods so fast! Keep up the good work. I like watching quilting videos I have purchased that have great idas.

  2. Oh Oh OH, Amanda Jean! Remember that wonderful stippling video you did? I do! I think I'm gonna need one on this quilting. Oh yeah...I know I'm going to need a video on this. So? Busy tomorrow? Wanna make a video tomorrow? You KNOW you wanna! Giggle....I'd like to say I'm kidding, but I'm not! Ha!
    Regina....who loves this one, btw!

  3. Cute! I'll have to try that sometime. Looks like it takes awhile, though! ;) I can't do that on my current project, so I'll have to wait for something else to try it on. I'm quilting another Confetti quilt, so I'm just outlining squares. :)

  4. I checked out the site and it looks like she had a fun class. The attempt that you made looks awesome. That's a lot of bobbin thread.....and how many squares are there??????

I finished all of my nine patches this week. I'm excited to move onto the next step.

  5. oh that is quite the quilting and I can see how you are using up so much thread! I agree...please do a video while you are quilting this week and let us mere mortals see how it is done. ;)

  6. My mother, the professional long-armer, is always trying to get me away from the stipple but it's so hard. Your new quilting is great....I can't wait to see the finished product!

  8. Amanda Jean, this is beautiful quilting, and I followed your link to dioramarama's site where I saw many other quilting designs. Did I hear a rumor about a video of this quilting??? That would be wonderful!

  9. That really is a cool look! I would like to see a video too...I can't quite make out how you did the shapes, but they look great!

  10. Your quilting looks great. I've tried that design on sample but haven't been game enough to put it on a quilt yet.
I'm up to 45 block.........my sewing machine has been at the repairer for 3 weeks!!!!! Will have to catch up.

  17. Your brave, I'm way too scared to try anything new, it gives me the shakes. :) But I'm determined, I like the circles on circles pattern? If that's what its called, I kind of made that up.

  19. Longtime lurker, here...but wanted to say that when I took a free-motion quilting class recently, we were shown many ways...one of them PEBBLES. Or rocks/stones...it's fun, but I never really thought about using it on a large quilt...(and kinda forgot about it). I think I might have to rethink that! ha! Great job!

  20. this looks awesome, I would love to see more of it. I need to venture away from stippling too.

  27. it looks great! whenever i am working on something that is large i start out by making 8 bobbins or so... i'm always amazed at how many i go through!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love that look! Especially with the cherries. I think all that bobbin changing would drive me nuts, though.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nice work branching out. Looks good! I keep trying to think of a new pattern too!! You know me though I don't really do the practice thing.:) Good job!

  36. Love this! You didn't use the long arm did you?? I have most stayed away from free motion quilting, but I just got a new machine, and think I need to branch out! :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Anonymous2:51 AM

Good on you for branching out, though it does look a little fiddly to do!! Great link too makes me wonder why I stick to the same old!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Amanda you are a good machine quilter ... have you thought about quilting for others? You'd do very well I'm sure.
I've watched you over the last few months expand your designs - I think you have much more to offer yet ! If you look on the longarm lists you will find lots of inspiration for quilting ideas that you can do on a domestic machine too! Look under Freehand quilting - Patsy Thompson site would also be a good place to look for domestic machine quilting too - she is excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Loving the little loopy circles! Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ack! I must get going! And I've mis-laid my first 14 blocks. Where could they be??? Your pebble quilting is wunderbar -- I'd love to try that out. Is it hard to re-train yourself after so much stippling?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The quilting has a beautiful whimsical look to it :) very nice!

    ReplyDelete
  45. O's on the oh cherry oh quilt!
    perfect!

  50. What a cool pattern. Looks great with the cherries.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wow Amanda! That quilting looks fabulous and really makes the cherry fabric pop.
You always share fabulous ideas with us and then pop out a beautiful quilt to share as well. I haven't mastered the stipple yet, but this one looks fun. Is it it easy?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wow, that is wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Love it!

Maybe we should all just start investing in thread companies? :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Fun! I need to try some new stuff too . . .but stippling is easy AND fast :) Love what you've got done already!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh, I'm loving it, too! The pattern of your quilting line is such a great reflection of the cherries in the patchwork - brilliant! I can't wait to see this one when it's done, and I can't wait to see what you do with future quilting projects now that you've moved out of (yet another) comfort zone. Go, you!

  56. Anonymous10:34 AM

Yup, that quilting design is gonna suck up the thread. The finished product will look great on the quilt though.
As for the quilt along, I have more than 70 9 patches done. Now I am trying to do sashing on 10 per day. I should take a break from that to blog about it and post some pics over on the flickr group.

  57. amandajean...thanks for sharing. That is a beautiful look!

    ReplyDelete
  58. This is indeed funny stippling! Nice job.

  59. This is amazing! A little ambitious for me right now, but I am going to stock it away for a rainy, quilt filled day. Great job...and good luck finishing it :-).

  60. I have attempted quilting circles several times but unsuccessfully. Your posting has inspired me to try once again.
You remind me of the Energizer Bunny you just keep on going and going.

  61. Ooh, thanks for the link, these are great designs :)

Congratulations, the quilting looks great! I have checked out your links, very inspiring, Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Very cute! Maybe you should look into purchasing pre-wound bobbins. They last longer.

    ReplyDelete
  64. that is some amazing quilting! It's nice to break out of a rut sometimes, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  65. oh great I am officially behind:(

Re: Quilting. Good for you it looks great. Wide your bobbins nice and tight, so they feel hard when you squeeze them and you'll get a lot more thread on.
I think loop de loops is so much easier than stippling/meander.
    Yours looks great.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Lovely quilting - I want to try those double loops some day :-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow! I really like that!!!!
    Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  68. OMG! your work is fabulous!

    ReplyDelete
  69. You never cease to amaze me! This is wonderful and is just perfect for the cherries!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Good for you for branching out! I'm impressed.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Wow, I like it! I've done pebbles before, but never went around them again, which would be a lot like what you did, I think. I'll have to try your method!

    ReplyDelete
  73. i love the pebble quilting...but you should have asked first... i would have told you it takes FOREVER!!! i have one quilt that i did that way. love it, but only one. :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. I am a little behind - well, maybe more than a little! I have 25 sewn, but 30 more cut out. I am hoping for some sewing time this week! Gonna go check out that pebble quilting...

    ReplyDelete
  75. Wow - you did that without a free arm? You must post a youtube and show us!!!!

    That is really beautiful!

    thanks for sharing

    ReplyDelete
  76. i love the look of that. i'm always looking for new kinds of quilting...but this might be a bit out of my league...well, maybe with LOTS of practice.

    ReplyDelete
  77. See Dijanne Cerval's book "72 MORE ways not to stipple or meander".

    It sounds like you're ready!

  78. The quilting on this is amazing. I love it. Looks like some other fun quilting designs through the link too.

    ReplyDelete
  79. ok, i am officially inspired ... i have a mini quilt needing to be quilted, and i've been coming back again and again to your post. i think i am ready to give "pebbles" a try ... ... ...

real quick -- do you have any tricks for stopping and starting your quilting in the middle of a quilt; i.e. when you have to change bobbins? i always like to begin and end off of the quilt, because i can't seem to avoid big birds' nests on the back of my quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think that combining this along with your stippling will give you a whole different look. Thanks for the inspiration!
