I finished piecing my bento box quilt top.
(And I think it looks pretty darn good on my bed!)
This thing is a monster-measuring 105" x 90".
For those of you who asked for a tutorial, I cannot share that, as there is a pattern published.
For those of you who asked for advice on making a king sized quilt, I have none. This is only my second king quilt, and the first one that I am going to attempt to stipple. I'm a bit intimidated at the thought. Unlike Miss Heather, who just finished her third-or maybe fourth-king sized quilt. I'm so proud of my quilting apprentice. :)

I love the reworking with the lighter brown tones! It looks wonderful! And I even thought that just blue and green might be the proper route -- this is much prettier.

Query - do you have a king-sized bed, or did you just want some extra coverage?
ReplyDeleteI have a queen, but, with mattresses so enormously thick these days, I am just not liking the look of the coverage a queen-sized quilt or duvet provides. So how did you settle on sizing?

ReplyDeletei do have a king sized bed. even when we had a queen bed, we used king quilts. i like the extra coverage, too.
i determined the sizing from my previous bed quilt (and added a few inches) to allow for shrinkage. i hope it's enough. i still may add one solid white border. i'm thinking that one over. :)

Fast, fun and looks a lot harder than it really is. :) That's my kind of quilt top! LOL Good luck with the stippling! I could never do one that size. I about went nuts doing an almost twin size one!

I love this pattern. I did it twin-size for my daughter's "big girl" bed and made it really scrappy - which meant that I got to use tons of different fabrics that I loved. Which is why the pattern is so great - there's soooo much you can do with it! I really like what you did with it, too - and YES am glad the brown stayed, it looks great!

My 'first' quilt using the sewing machine for stippling was a 100x100 inch quilt. Reflecting back - it went like a breeze. The only part which was hard for me was towards the edges when my arms hurt to the quilt moving under the needle.

ReplyDeleteLooks great. Just break the quilting into sections. Work one section, then re-fold/wrap the quilt and move on to the next section.

ReplyDeleteYou always do such a beautiful job, and this is no exception. I love the colors, and I'm really not a blue person. I like the extra coverage too, simply because on cold nights, you don't want to be without, getting your covers stolen by some guy. And I am just about done stippling my first king-sized quilt. I did a larger stipple than I do on smaller quilts, and it still has taken a while. It's a bit dicey in the middle, but it's actually coming out great anyway. Just hard on your shoulders, muscling that much fabric and batting around. Great work on this one. I really do love it.

ReplyDeletelet me just tell you that the quilting class my mom made me take 10 years ago when i was 14 is rearing it's fabulous head--i'm itching to make something (although not entirely certain it will turn out looking anything like yours).
here is my issue: i have NO FABRIC. read: no stash. no backup. no favorites. none. none. none.
so...do you have any tips for starting a "stash". i'm moving, in school, & kind of living the crazy life of a medical student right now...so keeping a whole "stash" that beatifully flows together into creative quilts isn't really an option. do you pick up your fabrics gradually? or go shopping for fabric with a certain quilt + color combo in mind? how much do you recommend buying of each fabric?

LOVE LOVE LOVE this quilt!! I am a new quilter (as in- just getting ready to start my first quilt- and it is going to be for my daughter's dolls). I have found many patterns online that I like but this is the first quilt that I want to copy EXACTLY. It is beautiful!

One un-bento-box-related question though: I'm making flea market fancy quilt based on your measurements, and am currently lacking ideas for quilting it. I'm very novice on stippling, so that is out of the question. What kind of quilting would make the squares pop out nicely, and would be relatively easy? ReplyDeleteyou could try to do a grid quilting pattern (straight lines on the diagonal) like i did in my snippets quilt. otherwise, you could do some stitching around the edges of the squares. and some straight line quilting in the sashing. that might be fun. i hope that helps, and let me know it you have any more questions.

ReplyDeletei would suggest that you just start buying fabric based on your individual projects. don't worry about building a stash to work from. (eventually, that will come with time.) as far as how i go about stash building, i have a fair amount of info about that subject on my FAQ page.
