basting

Welcome to the quilt-a-long! Are you seeing the light at the end of the tunnel yet? We are so close to being done.

Once your quilt top is assembled, it's time to baste, which is another term for putting all the layers of your quilt together (backing, batting and the quilt top).

My quilt top is about 68" x 88", so I bought 5.25 yards for the backing. It was just enough. I don't go by the rule that your backing and batting need to be 4" larger on all sides of your quilt top. I like to squeak by with as little waste as possible.

I pin baste my quilts with curved safety pins. There is a tutorial here.

And now you are ready to quilt! I plan to put together a tutorial for next week on free motion quilting.

You're the best. I have a gift I'm sending you to thank you for doing all this for us. I'll try to get it out in the mail this week.
Hugs!

I would love to know what your back fabric looks like, because I am kinda new to quilts larger than the 42 inches given on the fabric roll. How do you make it larger to fit a larger top quilt?

I'm with Anina, I've got to figure out what size quilt I'm making and finish the top.

make and takes,

to make your backing fabric larger, cut 2 lengths of fabric (in this case cut your 5.25 yard piece in half so you have 2 pieces of fabric approximately 94" x width of fabric.) To sew them together, match 2 selvedge egdes together and sew one very long seam. Then your piece of fabric should be about 84" x 94" or so. You will have one seam down the middle of the back of your quilt. Does this help?

I have other deadlines (birthdays and weddings) so I'm only on like week 5. :( But I've never taken a quilting class or worked with anyone else on a quilt. You can NOT make the batting and backing huge amounts of bigger? It doesn't like shrink or something? This is REVOLUTIONARY! Suddenly I have visions of all the batting I've wasted over the years!

As with others, I look forward to your free motion tutorial; I've only hand quilted in the past, but I'd like to start machine quilting my smaller/quicker projects. Can't wait!
