Welcome to finish it up Friday!
It's been another busy week, but I have some small finishes to share today. Small, but pretty darn cute!
I made these pincushions as samples for my local quilt shop. All 4 of these designs are in my pattern
Plenty of Pincushions, Volume 1. I had to make
new pincushions because I couldn't bear to part with the originals. Turns out these won't be easy to part with, either, even if it is only for a time! :) These are scrap project #186!
I decided yesterday that I'm going to
try to make an entire quilt out of those little sailboats (top left). It's going on my bucket list!!! Each little individual square finishes at 1". It'll probably take me a lifetime to make the quilt....or, it'll end up as a mini or pillow cover. Hahaha! But seriously, can you imagine??? It's going to be epic!
One more finish....this may only be exciting to me, but I finally have my pincushion patterns in print! (Thus the need for the shop samples.) These are only available as wholesale right now, for local quilt shops to purchase, but getting a pattern to this point takes a long time, so it's definitely worth celebrating! Woohoo!

It piqued my interest, and she gave me the book to make my own. I made 2 for my senior year dorm room. Alas, they are both gone because back in those days, we only had poly/cotton to use. P.S. I hope your pattern goes viral in the shops!

Robin and I both love small projects that can be finished in a day. These pin cushions would be great for that!
ReplyDeleteMy BFF lives over 1000 miles away. We try to get together about twice a year. She recently had a medical emergency where an aneruyism burst behind her pancreas. It was touch and go there for a while, as she coded three times while on the operating table. I am so thankful that God spared her life. She will have a long recovery, but I hope one day we will be able to sew together again. Thanks for hosting Finish is up Friday. Some weeks you motivate me to get something finished ;-)

ReplyDeleteWonderful pincushions! My friend Tammie and I have been friends for 35 years even though we have never lived in the same town! We share a few common interests in a very big way. We have independently acquired so many of the exact same books (fiction, cookbooks, etc.) we concluded that when we are old and widowed we'll move in together and live off the half of our library that we can sell because they are no longer needed. Seems like this is exactly the friend who needs a copy of this pattern.

The pincushions look lovely! And a quilt of 1" finished blocks is definitely a realistic goal; I made one from scraps once and look forward to doing it again. I would share the pincushion pattern with my mom, who coincidentally was telling me today about making some pincushions.

ReplyDeleteMy friend, Jean, and I met at freshman orientation at college almost 40 years ago now. I was a farm girl and she was from the Chicago suburbs. Our majors were Textiles & Clothing and we shared many classes In college. Despite living on opposite ends of a large campus our friendship grew and over the years our lives ran parallel to each other - jobs at city department stores, marriage, our children born within weeks of each other. We live about an hour away from each other but got together every couple of weeks when our children were young and at home. Now we make it about monthly. Both of us have sewn, in one form or another since childhood and we usually go to at least one quilt shop when we get together. It's an interest and bond we've always shared.

When Hurricane Sandy hit the mid-Atlantic states, I wanted to help in some way so I decided to make a quilt to send. Knowing how slow I am, I wrote about it on my blog, shared info about the block I was making, and asked if anyone wanted to help. I was overwhelmed by the response. I received blocks from 27 countries around the world, and sent over 50 quilts before I cried "uncle!" I still have enough blocks to make several more quilts, but I just couldn't. The project had taken over my life. Kelly Ann is a friend I met online through this project, and we've stayed in touch ever since, even though we've never met. She was a huge and generous help to me getting those quilts finished. I've since learned that she has suffered terrible losses in her life, and yet she is still a ray of light for many with her unfailing willingness to stand up for others. I've also learned that we have much in common. We'll probably never meet, as she lives in Texas and I live in Virginia, but I'd love to recognize her with a surprise of your patterns for those adorable pincushions. Pincushions are good for trying new techniques. Janet and I have been friends since she and my husband were sponsors for high school class in the early 70's. We are sewing buddies, taking our first quilt class in late 1990's. We Are in ASG, American Sewing Guild, together, each having led a neighborhood group.

She started me on the sewing path when I was a child. Sadly, she can no longer craft at all as she has Alzheimer's. I think a colorful bowl of these in her room would brighten things up!

ReplyDeleteThe friend I would like to share this with came to live with me about six years ago. She is the one who brought me to quilting (I'm so grateful for that!) and she loves pincushions! In fact she's been collecting patterns the past few months and has plans to make pincushions throughout 2017. What a perfect give this would be fore her! Since we live together we could share one pattern and pass the other along to another dear quilty friend! My friend is my mother. Yep. She's awesome.

My friend Julie and I have been stitching buddies for a long time (25 years), mainly handstitching, but we have gotten into machine sewing too the last few years. While we don't really need an excuse to get together to sew (we already have plans to do so on Tuesday), these pincushions would be the perfect reason to do it!

ReplyDeleteI agree with above bloggers, your pin cushions are cute! My best friend is my spouse. We do everything together....except he does not quilt, but does show interest in my projects time to time. My other important friends are my fellow bloggers or face book contacts that share my love of quilting. My spouse says I quilt all the time. It is so relaxing, sense of accomplishment and just sharing with other quilters. It is so nice that in this day and age we have a media to share our accomplishments. So quilt on!
ReplyDeleteMy friend Cheryl is the person that got me into quilting. We are those long distance BFFs that can go for weeks without connecting, and then just start right back up like it was yesterday. I always try to find new interesting sewing ideas to share with her because i know she would know to make them rarher than actually having to make them for my non sewing friends

Your pincushions are so cunning, as we say here in Maine. (Translation--cute, adorable, all things we call babies :) My friend Kitty, who I've never met in person, is a Maine blogger who inspires me in all that she does. She's a designer, quilter, biologist, photographer, but most of all, a mom and wife who weaves a blanket of love around her family.

ReplyDeleteI met Simone when I moved to Canada and funny enough we became friends first and then discovered we are both from Germany. We have the same kind of dry humour and helped each other understand and adjust to the Canadian life. We embraced it with open arms and a joke on our lips :-) She just started sewing and I am a fully licencesed fabric addict. I am picking out small and easy projects to nudge her along.

You asked about friends and friendship...well I have never met my best friend in real life, but we have been writing email notes to each other since early 2010! I came down with Viral Meningitis in Feb of that year and ended up with a long-term/permanent disability. This lovely lady contacted me through a Yahoo quilting group we were both in at the time. So, we started conversing through email on a pretty much daily basis. You see, when you come down with a so-called invisible illness, many people don't believe you and so I lost almost all of my in-person friends and also my mother...all of these people refused to believe that I could not work/and do the things I used to do. I became very lonely. Then this special woman came into my life and we 'speak' on a mostly daily basis even today. We send each other birthday and Christmas packages...but that's not what our friendship is all about. The companionship and understanding that I have received from her has carried me through many other medical situations and diagnosis and I can't imagine my life with out her.
Just a small cation of my friendship with her!

ReplyDeleteA quilt made of 1" blocks, don't tempt me. My friend Kathy, has inspired me to try new techniques and patterns above my skill set. Sewing with her and our merry band of quilted sisters has improved my piecing skills immensely.
ReplyDeleteYou can never have too many pincushions!!! My friend Marva Jo and I became friends many years ago both joining a social sorority in our small town. Now we are grandmothers, I'm a great gwamma and we get together to hand stitch every Thursday and we quilt in 3 of the same quilt groups 3-4 times a month. She is a marvelous seamstress and now even has her own longarm machine. Sewing friends are the best.

I ADORE your pincushions! You can't have too many! I met my friend P.J. my first year of high school. I started a new school that year and hardly knew anyone. P.J. was the first person I met and we have been best friends since....that was in 1963, so it has been a very long time. We both LOVE to sew and whether you are a quilter, garment sewer or crafter you always need a pincushion :) I have them stationed at various places in my sewing room. I love these pincushions! My BQF is Becky....we met when I joined the Philly Modern Quilt Guild and became fast friends during a guild sewing day, where I "copied" my first of Becky's quilts (she is an amazing quilter!) - LOL. We've been friends now for about 6 years and have seen each other through some difficult times. Even though we don't get to get together as often as we'd like (life is busy!) I'm very grateful to have her in my life!

I made my first mini pincushion. It is a four string mini block pin cushion. Love it. See why you don't want to part with your pin cushions. I have a friend who quilts but she is so busy. She needs to slow down and a pin cushion would be idea for her.
ReplyDeleteCongratuatlions on your pattern! The pincushions are adorable. My Best Quilting Friend, Judy, and I used to live within a mile of each other. We spent many hours quilting together, attended guild meetings, and visited many quilt shops. Our husbands were also friends, so we spent a lot of time together doing other things as well. About 3 years ago, my husband and I moved to another state to be close to our daughter and our aging parents. Judy and I still manage to quilt together.....long distance. We challenge each other every month to create at least one quilt block of our choice, and we choose a quilt pattern we both like and make at least one block of that quilt as well. Of course we both do much more quilting than the 2 "challenge" blocks, but it is something to keep us connected. We send photos of our completed blocks, as well as any other projects, at the end of each month. A couple of times each year, we visit each other, along with our husbands, and have a short 3- or 4-day quilt retreat. Judy and I sew and sew, while our husbands occupy themselves and even prepare a meal or two for us. It's a great friendship that does a lot to energize my love of quilting.

I would share a pincushion pattern (and probably a pincushion, too!!) with my friend Rose. She and I were matched as quilty pen pals in a Facebook group about a year and a half ago. Neither of us is very active in that FB group, but we have been writing letters and sending packages to each other ever since! We love to shop for quilting supplies, fabric, patterns and treats for each other, and are putting the last rounds on a round robin quilt project now. It's been so fun to find a quilting "sew-l sister".
