finish it up Friday, 10/16/15

Welcome to finish it up Friday!

I wanted SO badly to have this project finished today, but at some point you just have to admit defeat. At least I got the top assembled, so it's one step closer!
This project started out innocently enough, as all crazy projects do. I was trimming down half square triangles and the remaining bits were just under 1" square. That's too big to throw away, obviously, so I bordered each one with a big gray frame. I added white sashing to set them apart.
The half square triangles finish about 1/2" square. (Thumbnail included for scale.) I know, this so crazy, but that's why I love it so very much! The good news is that I didn't go all out and make it a bed size quilt. There may be hope for me yet! :)
Now, I need to decide if I should turn it into a pillow or mini quilt. I'd love to hear what you think!

It's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!

This is so cool, it is definitely crazy but what a great way to showcase those tiny gems!

Muv said...

Truly nuts, but lovely. Definitely a mini quilt.

This is so cool! Either a pillow or wall glancing would look great. I'd do whichever you think you'll use more. Kat @ katandcatquilts.blogspot.com

Mini quilt. Or king sized. I love this SO much!!

Colleen said...

ha,ha, soo great ! I'm inclined to vote for pillow !

Vera said...

Fun! Cushion sounds more useful than mini :)

Leanne Parsons said...

I love it! Though I'm pretty sure I would have thrown away those pieces :)

Rachel said...

I actually kind of love this, even though it is crazy. I say mini quilt. It reminds me of a gallery wall of instagram photos or small modern art prints with big mats.

Svetlana said...

oh-my-word!!! This is just stunningly amazing !!! And crazy, but crazy in the best way possible :).

Heide said...

How crazy! This is so tiny, yet so lovely!

Such a sweet design. Scrappy and elegant--delightful!

Cynthia Brunz Designs said...

Love it! I think you should make it into a bag so you can take it out into the world and share your crazy! ;)

Lorna McMahon said...

A pillow needs to wear this. So cute!

Cara said...

I'm not usually a mini quilt fan, but that one just says mini to me. I would absolutely hang that , and I don't have a single quilt hanging in my home.

pippinsequim said...

I think you should turn it into a larger piece by exploring negative space with more white and grey!

Anonymous said...

I am a huge fan of all your pillows so my vote is definitely another pillow to add to your collection!

Anonymous said...

Pillow, I think. You've got the idea out of your system, no need to push it to the point of madness by making even a mini quilt! It's *adorable*, but just the tiniest bit bonkers!

Little Quiltsong said...

I say pillow :)! Love those little 'pop' of HST's in the blocks. Beautiful!!

Sue said...

A mini quilt would be adorable.

Sarah Craig said...

It's totally insane, and totally adorable!!! I would make a pillow of it, but anything you make (even a king size quilt) will be just as adorable! Great work and super creative!

Julierose said...

this is so fanTAStic--i think a little mini quilt -- beautiful work--so itsy-bitsy..Hugs, Julierose

Suzanne said...

I say go big or go home. I can envision this as an offset block on a much larger quilt top. The background would be out of a solid color that allows the intricacies of this one to pop.

Do you hate me for that idea?

Gina said...

That's an amazing quilt. I love the idea but wouldn't have the patience to sew all those little HST's

Gemini Jen NZ said...

You totally have way more patience than I do for fiddly projects! They look cool though and worth the effort.

Sophie Zaugg said...

I love it ! A mini quilt would be better to showcase the design.

Tamie said...

I love, love this...

Kat McPherson said...

*now rethinking how small of scraps I keep* This is adorable!!!! I love what you did with your tiny leftover HSTs!

Unknown said...

I love everything about this. Definitely a mini. I would hate to see this crumpled as a pillow. Hang it up by your work space and admire your work!!!

Very FUN project!

Noblequilts@gmail.com said...

Oh my goodness, that is so cute. Definitely make it a pillow. I am more of a practical person and would rather something I can use and not just look at. Whatever you end up doing have fun and enjoy.

Kris said...

So tiny but so cool!

KWILEY said...

I love - and love tiny - but that might be too tiny for me to attempt. I so think wall mini - I'm not sure I'd want someone laying on such a precious pieced work like this one.
Also looking forward to how you will quilt it.

Sunanda said...

Wall quilt? How big is it? And please, what are your neutrals? I love the gray...is it Kona or something else?

Mary Marcotte said...

I love it! Think mini-pillow or mini-quilt. How about a doll quilt for one of the little ones? Every baby doll deserves a quilt!

I'm just going to be upfront and serious with you: do you realize that now you'll have the rest of us saving 1" scraps? Ridiculous! Why stretch the 2" rule even more, I ask you! You are bordering on scrappy freak. Maybe slow your roll, as the kids say, and think about what you're telling the world.

JanineMarie said...

Do whatever makes you happier, just make sure everyone can see it, 'cause it's awesome!

Anja @ Anja Quilts said...

Wow...those are pretty darn small HST's. But it looks great. Good luck with whatever you decide.

tink's mom said...

wow that is stunning. mini quilt is my vote. I think the detail would get lost as a pillow.

quilterchick said...

It's the perfect size. Finish up and hang it on a wall near your machine to remind you that it's okay to be a little crazy now and then!

Jenn @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge said...

Good grief those HSTs are small! I think your scrappy ways are contagious... I find myself looking at off cuts and planning new projects. It's like my projects are breeding WIPs!

Saracre8 said...

Mini Quilt for sure!

Unknown said...

I would make it into a mini quilt and hang it up right next to your sewing machine!! It's really awesome!

SuperMomNoCape said...

Oh my goodness, that is adorable!! Those tiny pops of color framed in gray are just such fun. You could always make it into a pillow cover that you could display like a mini quilt but then when you want to switch things up you could take it down and put it on a pillow form.

travelinsewl said...

Mini quilt! It would look great in my dining room! Ill send you my address if your cupboards are full. : )

Jeneta said...

I LOVE it!!! I want to say mini quilt, but the word 'cushion' keeps coming out instead.

Bernie Kringel said...

Oh I do love this! I have a fondness for mini quilts so that is my vote. Yikes, whichever way you go, this is really fun.

Jenny S. said...

This is art! Sublime use of fabric.

Sandi said...

Perfect for a big throw pillow! Love the idea.

Sandy said...

Love!💕 My first thought was a pillow! But then, I thought that maybe it would be lost in your sea of pillows! It has an art quilt feel to it, so I think it needs to go on a wall to be admired 😄

margaret said...

the grey and white show off your tiny HSTs beautifully

Peg - Happy In Quilting said...

That is awesome ☺️

This is so amazing!!! I love tiny your tiny patch work!! Mini or even a bag!!!

TWETY said...

Oh! It seems crazy ( perhaps it really is!) but it's great!!! I also have a lot of those mini HST and can't bare to throw them away. You've just given to me a wonderful solution.... Thanks!!!

Oh my Goodness I love this.

Preeti said...

Oh no Amanda!!! What have you done?
Now, I will be saving those little triangles left over from joining binding strips (which until now were too small for anything and were being discarded) and making little HSTs to make this quilt. I can see myself doing just that. You are such a nutty influence!!!
Love it :-)

Nancy McC said...

I have a whole sandwich bag full of small half square triangles with no plan on how I was going to use them. This would be a great idea to use some of them up! Thanks for the idea. I think you should make a mini quilt with them. I may do the same and hang some charms that I have acquired at several shop hops to bling it up a little!

Chopin - A Passionate Quilter said...

A piullow cover would be good, OR sometimes I make a small quilt and use it for a computer cover, or for the back of a chair! Lots of possibilities with this project.

Quilt Fabric Pizazz said...

A pillow? And have someone inconsiderately actually using it and squishing it into place? Horror! This tiny beauty needs to be on the wall as a mini quilt. this is Very nice piece.

Wendi said...

I simply love this design! I suggest you make another one and
then you can make a mini quilt and a pillow. Yes!

Marsha said...

I don't understand mini quilts so I vote at least lap size. It's just too cool. Really.

Quilter Kathy said...

You made me laugh with the "good news" part because I was thinking it would make a great lap size quilt!

Jayne said...

Whatever you make from this...it is gorgeous! I love seeing how small I can go with something...I adore this!!

Linda Fleming said...

It's nice to meet a kindred spirit!
A wonderful, crazy piece!
What size is it at the moment?

Arita said...

Go big. Love it.

Daytona Damsel said...

It would drive me crazy sewing all those bits but I love the pattern. I like the pillow idea since I am not a mini quilt fan. I would have no use for a mini quilt.

Had to laugh at this post. I also save small HST's. I have a bag that's beginning to fill up a bit of leftover triangles from trimming corners ect. The HST are already sewn and I think they finish at 3/4" Not sure yet what I'll make but this is a great idea. No bed size going on here though. Maybe a pillow.

Lucy | Charm About You said...

So pretty! Definitely a cushion :)

Cindi said...

Simply adorable...yet striking! I am a lover of mini quilts, so that is what I am voting for!

Unknown said...

I think it would make an interesting pillow!

Kbaby said...

Oh, a pillow! And it needs to be in my sewing bare sewing room my husband just made for me, lol. Its just the right colors! ;) Great Job. Beautiful work and colors.

I love it, it's such a great idea. Thank you, I'm going to do this, again and again, I have hundreds of little HST's that I had to save. I like the pillow idea but I think it should become a cover for your sewing machine, if you don't already have one. Your machine deserves something this special as a cover.

Carie @ Space for the Butterflies said...

That is insanely wonderfully crazy! I say why not go big? Why not just go for the quilt!!

faith said...

I so love that you do this kind of stuff. People think I am nuts for hanging on to these lovely little bits. This just reconfirms the beauty of it all. Thank you.

Unknown said...

Add me to the bunch of crazies who already have a collection of tiny HST similar to yours. I have incorporated a few into my still-in-progress scrap vortex but I like this idea better! I love the big "mats" surrounding the tiny art-like patchwork. I agree with Sandy above that it would get lost in among your lovely mounds of pillows so I vote for a mini quilt to hang like the art it is.

Sewmotion said...

I love this idea, I hate throwing any fabric away so you have inspired me! Thank you

Maria - Pink Pony Design said...

That is so very adorable!! Awesome use of those!
I'd make it a pillow =)

SarahZ said...

LOVE it! Mini quilt, hands down!

Alli said...

I looooove this! :)

Claudia/Ompompali said...

How lovely this is! I like the idea of adding it to a quilt made up of several different blocks. It is just too pretty. But pillow and mini-quilt - it's all fine to me. what is important is to be able to see it often - it's just too pretty!

sonia said...

Wow! You rock! Amazing job!! I'd say a mini would be so cool!!

Unknown said...

I would frame this as a piece of art for my living room!! Awesome!

Unknown said...

L.O.V.E. this! I vote for a pillow cover, but whatever you do with it it's going to be darling:)

really..really... crazy!!!

save this! will be crazy too soon.. hahahha...

Love the concept. Definitely a wall quilt, possibly framed.

This is so cute and such a great idea. I was just trimming up my Farmer's Wife blocks and couldn't toss the triangles. Now I know what to do with them! Thanks.
