hexi pin cushion

Welcome to finish it up Friday!
It's been a few weeks since I made a pin cushion, right? (Just two, I guess! Ha!) I needed a finish for today and the hexi block I made last April was just sitting around, waiting to it to become a finished object. So, last night while my husband and I were watching a movie, I hand stitched the block onto the gray background. I wasn't completely sold on the gray right away, but after I quilted it up, it looked so much better. I guess it just needed the texture.
I had picked out this backing for the pin cushion a few months ago. I love it so! It's sugary sweet, but a nice compliment to the front.
I love little projects like this because you can quilt the daylights out of them, but it doesn't take forever to finish it! And, as an added bonus, it uses up scrap batting.
This is my batting pile after I had paired it down a few weeks ago. I still could make 1000+ pin cushions! Or more! Ha! At least it's tidy for the time being....
It's hard to tell the scale of it, but it measures about 6" x 6.375". I do love a large pin cushion!
It looks like my pin cushion bowl is lacking orange! And no red polka dots, either. I'd better fix that....and quick! :)

Now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week. Thank you for joining me for finish it up Friday!

  1. Your little hexie pin cushion are sweet, and I agree that we need some quick projects vs. huge ones. Yesterday I started going through 5 boxes of fabric a friend purchased for me sight unseen. I was a little shocked that she spent over $100 for the lot, but I pulled out a simple hexie baby quilt made in the 1930's, and simple stitched to a flannel back. It reminds me very much of the simplicity of your little cushion today. I definitely felt a little better about the price after my discovery.

Thank you for hostessing your lovely linky.

  2. Why is anything small or miniature so appealing? That bowl of pincushions is fantastic. I also had just a quick finish this week and it was satisfying. Have a great weekend.

  3. I like your hexi pincushion - I am using one at the moment made by a friend and it makes me smile every time. I dearly want a bowl like yours full of little completed projects but I have some big ones to finish rather urgently!

  9. So that's what I made a single hexie for! I do love the different the texture made to background fabric. And my pile batting scraps is about the same! Thanks for inspiration!

  11. What a sweet finish! I love little projects like this that use tiny bits of fabric and anything that will make use of batting leftovers (I've been telling myself all week that I need to make some potholders to begin to whittle down my batting scraps before they take over my sewing room! LOL). I'm adding pincushions to my list of things to make to address that batting scrap issue - thanks for the idea!

  14. Your little pincushion is so sweet. I was wondering, do you stuff your pincushions with batting or using the batting on the back of the block before sewing the pincushion together.
    Thanks

  15. Another pretty pincushion Amanda!!! Great way to use up an extra quilt block laying around. I love the backing print and the quilted texture. Your stack of batting made me laugh. I have a stack too for pincushions, coasters, mug rugs, minis, etc., but my stack is a little bit smaller ;-)) Have a great weekend!

  21. I am surprised your kids have not taken to jumping in your batting like kids jump in leaves! Maybe I just planted a seed.
