made in America quilt top

My intention with this project, besides making a quilt for Quilts of Valor, was to make a block a day for the month of January. Or, a block a day for 30 days, I should say. In reality, I ended up making 2-3 blocks every 2-3 days, which was perfectly fine by me. The work was still getting done!
Today, though, I realized I only had 5 blocks to make, so I made all 5, and proceeded to sew the whole thing together. Instead of going with a completely random layout, I chose to work in columns of color, then pop in a few random blocks here and there. I really like how it turned out!
For the fabric, I started with a bundle of American Made Brand Solids, then added a few prints for variety sake. The American Made Brand solids were nice to work with! Not too thick, not too thin...just right. For the block, I used the maverick star tutorial here. The quilt top measures about 60" x 72".

It feels good to be ahead of the game for once. Even if it is just my game and I'm the only one playing. :)

  1. This is too funny...I just emailed off to our guild president how a few of us want to do a QOV with wonky star blocks and present the idea in our next guild meeting. You must have posted this before and it subliminally stuck in my brain. Any way......lovely quilt top and I'll use it as an example to those who want to participate (if you don't mind of course!)

  2. I have wanted to make some quilts for our local Hospice. I wanted to include some patriotic quilts for veterans and this would be perfect. Thank you. What a timely post.

  8. That turned out really well. I am canadian and am mourning the lose of an RCMP officer who was killed in the line of duty last week. Watching the funeral was so difficult. Its wonderful that you are honouring your soldiers. What a sacrifice these men and women make for us every day.

  13. Your quilt turned out beautifully. I just found out that you're coming to our Guild quilt show in October. I'm so excited to meet you. I should tell you that it's the North Star quilt show in Grand Forks. It's always a great quilt show. See you in October! CDahlgren at live dot com

  15. I really like the color arrangement--I think it gives more of the "stripes" look to go with the stars and makes it look even more patriotic :) A charity quilt or two is on my list for the year too. Torn between QOV or a quilt for older kids at a shelter.

  17. It turned out nice. I like solids that aren't too thick, but of course not see through either. :) feels good to reach a goal, huh, wish I did it more often.

  25. Love the quilt! I too had started a QOV and it is very similar to yours. I am using the rising star pattern with REd, White, blue. I am not as far along as you....but I will get there.

  26. Haha! You kindly allow everyone else to 'play' without us having to do any of the work!! I think this top looks great - excellent idea to go with the columns and pops. I still have a wonky star quilt on my someday list. Though I think it has moved closer to the top of the list after seeing your lovely quilt top!

  27. It was about 3 years ago that my husband received a QOV after doing his final deployment. Seeing those amazing quilts and how they affected the soldiers who received them, was what triggered my interest in quilting. I made my first one shortly after and I've made about 10 since. My hope is to soon make one to donate to QOV. Lovely!

  34. It came out beautifully! I like the approach of laying it out by column rather than randomly, it feels like a very purposeful layout this way.
