Welcome to finish it up Friday!
I'm so excited to share my finish for today....another pair of hand knit socks! I'm calling these "Saturday socks" and I knit them especially for my 11 year old son. He LOVES Saturdays, big comfy sweatshirts, being wrapped in a quilt (or two) and now he has a pair of hand knit socks to add to his Saturday ensemble. He's soooo excited for them, which I find absolutely charming. He's my middle child, so it is RARE that he gets new clothes, much less something made just for him. (It's usually all hand me downs.) I tell you, those middle children have it rough! Ha!
Turns out it isn't much easier to take sock photos on someone else's feet...
...but we had fun trying! :)
We joked that they look like old man socks. They do, but that works out, too. We always say he is an old man trapped in a kid's body. He's peculiar as the day is long and we love him to pieces.
These are my 10th pair of hand knit sock to date! My patterns are nearly worn out!
After 10 pairs, I finally feel like I can do a decent job at knitting socks! I've tweaked the pattern to my liking and I re-wrote it in a way that makes sense to me. I've got the PDF posted here
as a free download. I'm not qualified to offer up technical knitting help, but if you want to have a go at the pattern, feel free to give it a shot!
Now it's your turn! Please link up your finishes for the week! Thanks for joining me for finish it up Friday!
Those socks are wonderful! Lucky middle child!
I've knitted a scarf and one baby hat, but I'm too scared to try more than that. I would love to be able to make some socks though. What a great addition to his comfy Saturday wardrobe!
Love those socks!!!
The socks are great!! I wish I had the knitting skills, but I just can't make my hands work together to get it done :( I'll just have to stick to quilting!
Tis the season! I have a sock finish post this week too!
great socks AmandaJean, and yes, middle children do have it tricky :)
They are fantastic and those certainly look like happy feet!
Handsome looking socks! I need to get back to knitting socks. I know my guys would appreciate them too (just have to stay away from the crazy bright sock yarn I like for my own feet ;o).
Have a happy weekend!
Hand knitted sox - you're so talented. My mom used to knit sox for my dad all the time.
love your socks - I really haven't finished anything but I linked up anyhow - I continually work on trying to finish some quilt tops so in that respect some rows have been finished.
Hi Amanda, your socks look great ! Thanks for the pattern. I'm going to print it and get it to my 91 year old Mother. She is the knitter. Here is an article about her and her knitting. You probably won't have time to read it but I hope you do - I made one of your quilt patterns and gave it to her.
I love the socks! You are so creative and such an inspiration. Socks are not my favorite thing to knit, but I do have some to make to Christmas, so I had better get started!
Old man or not... These socks look super warm and cozy. Nice work!
Those socks are fantastic! And the colors make them look so cozy. Your son has it right: Saturday's are they best :)
Awesome socks! My sister and I both love making socks but we always seem to wear them out. I'm excited to link up again this week with another patchwork project - a wall art collage.
I'm loving those socks.I am about to start the heel (2 more rows) for my first pair of 2-at-a-time toe ups. So excited. Actually looking forward to the long car ride (6hours) for Thanksgiving week. Time to knit!!
What cute 'man socks'
Love the socks, to me, someone who knits socks is almost able to walk on water also, seriously!
They look great and warm, which is much needed these past few days! Have a great Thanksgiving!
Cute socks. Should I give them a shot?
Great socks! Glad he loves them!
they look nice and snuggly.
I wish I knitted because I would love a pair of those socks. You are so talented.
What yarn is that? I would love to know!
I'm the middle of 5. Those socks ARE special and how fun that he knows it. I only make quilts these days because they are FLAT and don't have to be fitted... I only knit scarves for the same reason. ;) Good on you for turning that heel... WOOT!
Whose pattern did you re-write
and is it alright with them for you to post as a free pattern?
Socks are good looking and the boy is lucky to have you knitting form him.
Oh my goodness! Those socks are perfection! I had better get back to my two at a time socks I have on my needles. Inspiration!!
I am so excited! I have been wanting to try to knit some socks and I have searched for a pattern using a circular needle instead of DP needles. Thanks!
i love these socks!! I don't think they are old mannish; i always find stripes to be boyish!! i always love sock pictures for some reason :)
We are on the same page. I just finished a pair of socks for my 12 year old. His feet are now bigger than mine. Alas, they (boys and feet) grow so fast.
I too would like to know what yarn you used. Xo
Love them! I am of the opinion that everyone should know the joy of wearing a hand knit pair of socks. I LOVE the ones I have made for myself. I would wear a pair of them every day if I had enough. Unfortunately, I don't have that kind of time, LOL.
P is a fortunate young man!
I've knitted a bunch of scarves but never socks. I love yours! Can't wait to try them, thanks for the pattern!
I am having difficulty getting the PDF to download. Can you help me? I am planning to try knitting socks. TIA
Thanks so much for this Linking party!
I love your socks, such a great job, perfect socks for this winter.
I love knitting socks! I have knit two pair so far :) is that self-striping yarn that you used? It's perfect for a guy!
So darned cool that you knitted these, and that your middlest loves them. You can be very proud. I know how to knit, but I don't do it. Flip-flops are my footwear of choice, pretty much all year round. Lucky me, huh?
Love the socks! Middle children do have it rough, and I can vouch for that! I'm one of three girls. I've used that middle child card....a lot :)
I'm having trouble getting your pattern to download. I love making socks and always looking for a good pattern from someone who has knit them... Please help!
Barb Schaus here again...please send response to email@example.com
Need help to download pdf
That is a fair question! I did a lot of research on sock patterns. I've found that many of the mechanics (turning the heel, decreases, toe shaping, gusset, etc) are very similar in almost all the patterns I've read. I've changed several things in my pattern: ribbed cuff, ribbed pattern throughout the top of the sock, and I wrote it for circular needles rather than DPNs. So while I used the original pattern as a starting point, I've re-written a good deal of it, and more importantly, in my own words. Hope that helps!
As a middle child myself, I tried hard to make MY middle child feel special, I'm glad to see you're doing the same for yours! Love the socks, thanks for sharing the pattern!
