finish it up Friday, week 10

Welcome to week 10 of finish it up Friday!
Today I only have 2 little things to share....I made myself a GIANT pin cushion yesterday. I put the rotary cutter in the photo for scale. It's 7" square! It's made from scraps I had laying around and it's simply filled with stuffing. Adding the buttons (top and bottom) was the trickiest part. I just LOVE it!
And this little baby....oh, it was a LONG time coming! I have had this idea for what feels like forever. I keep my spare bobbins in this little tin can. (The can was probably originally from diced green chilis, so it's tiny-only 2" tall!) My plan was to cover it with a fabric sleeve of some sort. Yesterday I finally jumped in and made it up as I went along. I free motion quilted the word on linen (backed with batting, for stability)...it took me about 12 tries to get it to look good! I cut away the excess batting, trimmed the linen down to size. Then I pieced scraps to put around the linen and around the perimeter of the can. This is one of the sides....
Here's a detail shot of the back....isn't it darling??
It's constructed very similar to a coffee cozy. It turned out so SO MUCH cuter than I had imagined it would be. I absolutely LOVE it! Getting this project off my mental list feels soooooooooooo good!!!

Now it's your turn! Please link up your Friday finish here and so we can cheer each other on in our finishes! Thanks so much for those of you who link up and join in. And to those of you who don't, hey, thanks for reading! :) Happy Friday!

  18. Fabulous finishes for the week! I love the idea of a giant pincushion, especially such a cute one. That way, you don't have to be so careful when taking pins out while sewing. Great way to use tiny scraps too. I love how you decorated your bobbin tin with a cozy wrap! Happy Friday!

  29. Also, I have a question...I add my link to your party, but then don't see my link added. This happened last week too. I checked on last weeks since it is closed, and still my link does not appear...I've even refreshed the page.
I only see 26 entries so far this week and 42 entries for last week...am I missing something?

  32. Your pin cushion is delightful... and that sleeve for the bobbin bin is clever as can be. Makes me want to look around and quiltify them.

    Both are so cute!

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the links that are posted? I can see the numbers 33-43, but the link is not displaying next to them. It appears to be due to a page layout issue. Bummer!

  40. My closest friend and I use the term "dropped my bobbins" for losing our minds just a smidge. So now, officially, you have a super cute can to keep from "dropping your bobbin"!

    ;0)

    Love it!

  41. So cute! Does the pink and black paisley come from your scrap bag? If so, it came from my house! :)

  43. I LOVE your pin cushion!!!! It is SOOO cool!!!!

  44. Funny! I keep my bobbins in an empty tuna can. (It's clean!) I love the cover you made and the giant pincushion too.

As a side note, I have decided that scraps are like bunnies...they multiply even (especially?) in the dark. I discovered this today when I attempted to clean my office. It was tidy for about two hours and then I got busy pulling out fabric again.

  45. That can idea is genius!! I keep meaning to do up a cute little pin cushion like the one you made, but it never gets done... I need to get that on my list soon - it's adorable!

  46. Adorable bobbin cover. I may just have to make a few coffee cozies like this. I made my 7" pin cushion as a Christmas gift to myself out of left over flannel.

I had to link up 2 links for this Friday! I had such an industrious week both quilting and general sewing. Thank you for the inspiration and nudge to get it done.

  47. Love the little tin! That is so cute. I know what you mean about feeling good when you get something off the mental list!

  51. Too Cute CrazyMom! Don't you love it when a plan comes together???

    ReplyDelete
  52. oh I love that little tin, AJ! I've been thinking for eons that I need a thread catcher and i like the idea of the tin better than the fabric catchers so the threads don't stick when you empty and put them in. I neeeeeeeed one of these!

  53. Nothing like a few new sewing accessories to get you all jazz up for more sewing.

    Too cute!

  54. i L-O-V-E your pincushion.....
in case you need to know, i could let you know when my birthday is.... it will be soon enough - well....enough time for you to make a pincushion for me..that is.. hahhah

    i love it.
I've made a couple of pincushions, and wasn't that happy with the outcome. must try again; i stuff mine with crushed walnuts & silica... apparently it sharpens the pins with use.
