yo-yo's!

I joined in with Penny's Yo Yo quilt along last week. I've made 101 yo yo's already. My husband can't understand why I'd want to make hundreds of pieces that look like little French hats. :) If I make the coverlet as the quilt along directs, it will use 24 (!!!) yards of fabric. I have to say, that idea is quite appealing to me, as I'm always trying to do some stash busting.

On the flip side, did you see that Connecting Threads is having a thread sale? 30% off their single spool cotton Essential threads, which means the individual spools are only $1.74! I had to do a bit of restocking in my personal thread stash. And while I was there, I may have ordered some solids (some of those are on sale, too). Ok, now I'm just being a bad influence...
(sorry!)

  2. Sadly I still only have 30 yo-yos made.
I hit that sale last week and I couldn't resist a charm pack of the new fabric Ella's Wishes.

  3. What wonderful colors you chose! I have a yo-yo maker, but I havn't used it yet. I'm not quite sure of what to do for a finished project. I'll look forward to seeing your finished product.

  7. I just got my catalog from them yesterday...and saw the thread sale and was wondering...have other's tried it? Is it good quality? I have liked everything I have gotten from Connecting Threads...but dang, that is such a GREAT price, I was afraid to stock up unless I knew it wasn't one of those cheepy threads that breaks every two minutes of sewing.
    Thanks!

  8. Hmmmm.....yo-yos for a Crazy Mom ..... there's a joke in there somewhere. ;-)

They sure do look cute though! I think I have about 600 yoyos done for my yoyo quilt -- only about 30 left and then I can make the quilt that goes with them....time...all I need is time....

I've finished my yo-yos and finally found a use for the material that I'm not going to use for the strips- cut them to make a lay-out of how I want to place them. Also, my quilt isn't going to look much like the one on the cover- only the center panel is going to be yo-yos with wide borders to add lots of quilting.flaus

  12. Oh I just love yo-yo's!!! Several years ago before I knew anything about a yo-yo maker I made 2 yo-yo quilts/coverlets. One for my mom with 2500 yo-yo's and one for my odest son with 2000 yo-yo's. Now I am slowly working on another one for my youngest son, which will have 2000 in it too, can' make a difference in the boys! LOL!

Enjoy them, I loved working with them as they are a great take along project....makes me want to work on some now...

    Have a wonderful day!

I have also been making YoYo's. I started at the begining of the summer. Wanted something productive to do while waiting for my kids during their activities. I had tried doing many hand projects in the past while waiting, but the applique always seems to complicated to do in the car or at a Starbucks table. The YoYo's are the most portible project I have found. I made a sewing tool box and I take it with me wherever I go! I have made a good 250 so far. I love them!

  14. I also have the yo-yo bug. They are fun and a productive way to spend TV time. I enjoy seeing what they look like out of different fabrics.

  15. Amanda Jean...honey...I love your blog and seeing what you're up to, but I think you've made the jump from Crazy Mom to Insane Mom. Do you dream of yo-yo's and make them in your sleep? I'm thinking of staging an intervention ;)

  17. Thank you for your review of Connecting Threads awhile back. It got me to check it out and I picked up the Farmers Wife when there was a book sale. I'd like to beable to pick up some thread from them this sale. I so want to quilt my Granmothers Flower Garden in the lime green.

  18. I was looking at their thread the other day and I find it hard to believe/understand that the regular spools of 1200 yards really fit a regular sewing machine, no extension or cone holder needed? I guess I just need to try it!

  19. Yay Amanda! So glad you're joining in! You're smokin' fast too! I couldn't believe it when I did the figuring for yardage. But then, I must have close to that just in scraps, right? lol!

  22. Do I dare?? Do I dare do this quilt along??? I think I would love it. Only problem that I have is finishing my yoyo off. They always come apart. I'll have to look at the pictures again to see what I'm doing wrong. Any advice on keeping those yogis together?

  23. I should have ordered them some thread with you! Actually, I really like the yo-yos just sitting in the basket, though the temptation to use them as flying saucers might be great!

  24. Hi, I enjoy your blog. What was the color in the baby quilt with circles (the background color). Several asked , did you ever say what the grayish color was. Thanks.

  25. I LOVE YO-YOs! Glad to see I'm not the only one!

  26. I am curious on the quality of the thread as well. I currently use the mettler metrosene plus 100% polyester thread that my bernina dealer recomended for use with my machine. Do you know how it compares to that? I would be upset to if it would rip & shred. That is such a great price & such pretty colors! Thanks for your help! Karen P. acp328@yahoo.com

First off, I must say I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog. I am also doing the yo-yo along with Penny, which is my first follow along project and I'm having a blast at it and love how portable it is. I think I may also follow along on your 36 Patch Quilt Alog! Keep up the awesome work!!

  30. I love yo-yos. I started making some a few years back, but have only used them as adornments. I love them as a quilt. Happy yo-yoing! ;o)

I've been searching for something fun to do with them and Penny's quilt along is just what I was looking for.
