a blue giveaway

Happy November! Every month my family and I play this silly little game. We all try to be the first one to wish someone else a happy month. This morning I was greeted by my 7 year old (before I even got out of bed) with a "Happy November!" Not a bad way to start off the day.

November is my favorite month. I love fall. I love the Thanksgiving holiday. It's cooler so there are plenty of chances to wrap up in a quilt. It's a great time to make more quilts. (Well, it's always a good time to make more quilts, if you ask me.) I think November is good all around!

In honor of the first day of my favorite month, I'm going to give away a quilt kit to one reader. The quilt kit consists of 42 blue, black and grey kona cottons, so you can make your very own blue quilt. Or...you could use the pre-cut rectangles for various other projects if you so desire. Each rectangle is a generous 5.5" x 19.5" so the possibilities are endless! If you would like to win, please leave me a comment letting me know of any silly games you and your family play. If you don't have one, your favorite color would be a good substitute. Happy Monday to you!

My favorite color IS blue so I would love to win your fabric. One of our silly games is, when we play cards or a board game, we all talk endlessly about how bad we are going to lose to the other two; how they are going to stomp all over us. Silly, but funny.

When I realize I have been wrong, wrong, wrong about something, I say to my husband, "Honey, I forgive you for everything you've ever done to me." He says the same thing to me if he's the one who has been wrong. It breaks the ice and cues us that it's time for a smile and a hug!
And my favorite color changes every day!

Happy November to you! It just happens to be my favorite month too. Love your family game! We make a bet every Fall to guess the first day snow will stick to the grass. My guess is Dec. 4 and Dave's guess is Dec. 7. What a stinker for guessing so close to my day!

wow! what a prize :) on car trips we used to give each of our three kids a drawing pad, have them close their eyes and then draw whatever we said. They loved to see what they had drawn when they opened their eyes. Good for so many laughs. as for my favorite color, does rainbow count?!

Oooo, love the blues! As for silly games, my family plays Padiddle. It's an intense sport, involving broken (or jammed but really exaggerated) fingers, feuds, and all out wars. :D For those who don't know, Padiddle is played in the car--if you see a car with only one headlight, you hit the roof of the car and call out Padiddle. Legitimacy of points depends on how far behind you are, or whether the opponent can see and verify. Bonus points if you score on a car behind yours!

My favourite colour changes, every few years. The colour I liked when I was 20, is certainly not my favourite, now.
Blue is my favourite, because it reminds me of mountains, lakes, rivers.

I love working with solids! Thanks for the giveaway. I have a very young daughter so our favorite silly game is "sleeping bunny" - it goes along to the tune of frere jacques, and she pretends to sleep then wakes up and hops. So cute.

Oh MY! Let's see... silly games...hmmmm... Nothing we do in our house is very serious. When my kids were smaller, when they entered the room, I would cover my eyes with my hands and say "You can't see me now, because I can't see you!" So, now that they are older, they come into a room with their eyes covered and if you speak to them, they repeat my line, and giggle like mad! Thanks for including me!

Anorina @SameliasMum said...

We have a strange little game that we play in our house. We start to sing an annoying or catchy song, to try to get it "stuck" in the other persons head and they end up singing it all day.
My husband is usually the winner because I'll end up with a Britney Spears song playing over and over in my head all day.

I would love to win the fabulous blue fabrics. Even though I am 39 and my brother is 30, we still do the "Mom, he's touching me" and "Mom, she's on my side of the car" game when we go anywhere with our parents. I don't think brothers & sisters ever grow out of picking on each other :) Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!

Those blues are so pretty!
We play "I'm going on a picnic" - where you pick 3 words that are connected in some way and say that you are taking them on a picnic. Then each player takes turns saying "I want to go! Can I bring XXX?" If XXX is connected in the same way they can come on the picnic, if not they have to keep guessing...
(I hope I explained that clearly - it's pretty silly)

One of our favorite original games is done at our dining table, and my oldest (8) usually starts it by saying, "who can ________ the fastest/longest/loudest/quietest". This week I won with counting to 10 the fastest. We've also seen who can make the highest pitched sound the quietest, who can eat their potatoes the fastest, who can burp like Elf...etc....

oh and favorite color is defaintely red, but of coarse, blue is right there next to it. I LOVE any shade of blue (mostly turquoise) with any shade of red (or pink)

We don't really have any games that I can think of...but growing up in a house with 4 four girls (5 when you count mom) we were constantly singing. To this day (we are grown and all but the baby is married) myself, or any of my three sisters, will break into song at random when we hear something that reminds us of a song. (A phrase or word is all it takes-old commercials are the worst at popping into your head!!) However, at work I do normally just sing it in my head...I don't think they would appreciate me randomly breaking into song while on the phone with a customer!

Fall is my favourite season, too. Love the crisper air and being able to break out my boots and sweaters again. This silly game is one I have with my BFF who's like family to me. We have long stopped giving each other birthday and Christmas gifts, but we usually give each other a token gift. If we've gotten an especially good deal on said gift, the price tag stays on (sometimes highlighted if it was a super good sale). Thanks for the giveaway!

Our family has LS's (Little Surprises) which are gifts you give for no reason and are to intended to be reciprocated. We also have a morning song that my mom used to sing to me and I sang to my kids "Good morning to you, good morning to you, we're all in our places with bright shiny faces, it's time to get up and start a new day" They hated it until the left and now they miss it, he he he.

Kelsey said...

So my husband and I just recently had our first child (he's 5.5 weeks old as I post this). We've developed a new little family game to make changing diapers a bit more entertaining. (He does, after all, go through 8-12 diapers a day...) Have you ever seen that game where someone touches their nose with their index finger and says "Not it!" and the last person to do so has to do the task at hand? We now have that with diapers. Anytime you can hear he's making a new diaper or feel his diaper is dirty, you can call Not It and the other person has to change it. Silly, but makes it a bit more fun. :P

Well, my kids are only 4 and 2 (and I'm 9 months pregnant with girl #3), so we don't have too many games we play...but we have a funny tradition that was passed down from my parents. Whenever someone leaves a light on or leaves a drawer open or something of that nature, we blame it on "Bill" or "Gilbert," two imaginary entities that get blamed for all that stuff. My kids think it's hilarious and even outside the home we blame Bill and Gilbert for all sorts of mishaps! Thanks for such a great giveaway!

My husband and I play a game on car trips where cows and horses on your side of the road (determined by yours seat in the car) are worth one point apiece, white horses are worth 50 points apiece and graveyards zero out your points. I love your greeting. With my children, we greet each of the children with a "Happy Birthday" on the exact time or fairly close to the time that they were born. I love blues! I actually use Blues and Whites to decorate for Christmas. I'm getting ready to use Elizabeth Hartman's advent calendar pattern to create a blue and white calendar.

For silly games, we like to pull random quotes from tv. My mom and sisters were watching Desperate Housewives and it was interrupted by the weather people for the possibilty of hail in Norman (a town 50 miles from where we live). Now any time we get interrupted, "there might be hail in Norman." It leaves us all in a fit of giggles.

We play "higher/lower" in guessing the temperature outside - our kids grew up in the tropics so anything below 90 was a total puzzle for them and the numbers had no meaning so we worked out a game to help them practice at it when we were in the U.S. in the autumn.

Sheila said...

I like BLUE!
My family plays a silly game every Christmas at our annual family gathering. Everyone brings one wrapped $10 gift. After dinner, we draw numbers for the opportunity to go to the table to choose a $10 gift. If someone wants something someone else unwrapped earlier, they may take it instead of taking a wrapped gift from the table. The person that is now without a gift must go back to the table and chose another wrapped gift. Each gift can change hands no more than twice. You can't imagine how much fun we have doing this. Saves money, too.

My son is 21 yrs. old. This is not a game, but reminds me more of the Elf on a Shelf. He will finish using something, i.e. mouthwash, but will not throw the bottle away. I'll put the bottle in his sink without saying anything. He'll find it there and then put it somewhere to annoy me. We never discuss the empty bottle. He got me this time by putting it in my car with a stuffed animal holding it. I laughed so hard! Maybe it's only funny to us! We keep it up until one of us just gets tired and then finally throws it away.

Thanks for the opportunity to win.

Lol I love reading all the silly games everyone plays!

We have quite a few in our house, the first one that came to mind is to come up with words that end in "-ly". This started as poking fun at The Teen, who was always saying "Seriously?" so we would reply "Jokingly?" or "Compellingly?" or "Ridiculously?" Everyone plays, and it gets quite silly.

Another one that is my personal favorite is when my husband makes up silly little rhyming jingles and sings them. I guess that's not really a game, but he makes me laugh, so I love it.

Ooh, I'd love to win the pretty blues. It's not really a silly game, but me and one of my sisters are certified Yahtzee addicts. We play every time we are together, and make sure one of us brings the game if we're at our parents' house. We always play the whole scorecard at once.

Me said...

We like to turn up the "smile dial" (think pretend frankenstein type nob on the neck) to make each other giggle. :)

Those blues are gorgeous!

When kids were young it was "pick the corn"...kids stood like cornstalks on the floor and the farmer (dad) would pick the "corn" and put them on the couch. The "corn" promptly ran back and planted themselves in the field and the "farmer" had to pick them again. Needless to say the "farmer" gave up first :) Thanks for the giveaway. nanasew at gmail dot com

When we are driving together in the car, the first person to see and then shout "mini cooper" wins a point. We have a good time shouting in the car! Happy November to you!

We play dance party. My 2 year old insists that all of us participate, no one can sit and watch!

Emily said...

The best game at our house is nightly wrestling with Daddy - my 4 year old and 2.5 year old boys love it, and the baby (5 months) looks like he wants to join in soon! While they wrestle, I can clean the kitchen, so that after bedtime there is time to .... quilt!

Kristin said...

Oh, I am going to keep all of my fingers crossed for this one...I love blue! And I love solids!!

When my kids were little, we played this game on road trips. I had played it as a little girl, when my parents, sister, and I were traveling... It's the "I'm thinking of a color, can you guess what it is" game. :)

Lori said...

When my daughters and I give each other a kiss, we throw our head back and kinda loudly say mwaaaaa. My four year old just burst into giggles over this.

Colleen said...

Blue is my mom's favorite color. Her birthday is today and she is 70. She also is in need of a new quilt as the one on her bed is a vintage that has seen its day. I would LOVE to make her a new, blue quilt with your kit!!! Pick me, pick me!!

I would love to win this package to make a quilt for my new grandson who is now 2 months old and so cute - especially in "blue". Personally, my favorite color is green (a close cousin of blue).
Thanks for the giveaway!

Kris said...

so cute! My husband likes to play hide and seek, but usually I don't know he's playing until I can't find him in our little apartment. He's usually hiding behind a counter or door... silly games are a way of life in our relationship :)

Oh, just love the Kona cottons! And blue just happens to be my favourite colour! :)

We love to play "Hot and Cold." It's silly because my kids get too excited and can't keep from telling each other where the object is.

Jess Millson said...

When my boys and I say "I love you" to one another we all hurry to say "I love you more." Simple and silly but we've had a lot of giggles over it.

We like to turn every day actvities into Seussical rhymes. My 3 year old rhymes almost everything. It's such a good, easy way for her to use her imagination, while improving her speech at the same time.

And we always say, "Rabbit Rabbit" on the first of the month. First words when you wake up, and it's good luck all month!!

Allison Chambers said...

My family likes to play the Birthday Milk game, this is where when buying milk at the grocery store, we try to get an expiration date on the milk that is someone's birthday that we know. This also works for other food with expiration dates, like birthday salsa, etc. I love the black, blue and gray combination and I can think of endless patterns that would look good in those colors. Great give away!

Allison J. said...

Your Blue Quilt is just lovely, and I would very much like the fabrics to make my own. My three sons play 'food critic' each night at dinner. After sampling the meal, they inform me how many stars it rates. They invented it themselves, but it has encouraged them to praise the meals they enjoy as well as let me know if they don't like it without fussing. Also, whenever one of them whines 'its not fair!' someone will immediately start reciting the Prospector's monologue from ToyStory2,(I'll tell you whats not fair...) We all see who can do the best imitation, and by the time we finish everyone is all smiles. My favorite color is purple. I can't get enough orange. And dark reds, any shade of blue is very nice, and who could live without rich chocolate brown? Pale pinks and soothing greens...
Happy November!

Briana said...

I would love to make one! Please pick me!

My favorite color in the world is pink in combination with any shade of grey/silver/sparkle :)

Also, we all play a "Happy Thursday" kind of game. Similair to yours, but with a handmade card or picked flower, or in some rare and lucky occasions a LPS or hot wheels car.

When our girls were little, we used to make fun of some of the rules and say silly things like "don't talk with words in your mouth" and "I've told you a million times not to exaggerate" - a good sense of humour takes the sting out of so many no's when they are learning...

Cindy Anderson said...

My favorite color is blue, aqua/teal shades.

Wendy said...

We play twinkle star! We try to be the first one to spot the first star of the night. And on foggy or no star nights try to be the first to say blackout! Thanks for the chance to win the blue kit, it is awesome.

Our family has 2-way radios, the first person to spot the 1st truckload of fresh Christmas trees comes onto the radio and annouces the trucks current location (street and town)! We are all on the lookout for the 1st sign of Christmas! My Uncle David is always the 1st to spot a truck!

My favorite color is pink. Our newest "silly" game to play is Mexican Train dominoes. All ages can play, so it is a great family game!

greetingarts said...

My girls and I love playing rhyming games, where we just start talking only in rhyme, and see how long we can keep it up.

Those blues are irresistable!

beth said...

Our favorite game is "grunt piggy grunt". You sit in a circle and someone in the middle is blindfolded and holds a fork. He goes around the circle, sits on someone's lap and pokes their leg with the fork and says, grunt piggy grunt. The person then snorts like a pig and the person has to figure out who it is. It is so funny!@@@

If my kids are good and he is not too tired, my husband will put on a little puppet show in the dark with two glow-in-the-dark Care Bears. They absolutely love it!

I adore the blues. I am a sucker for marketing in all colors particularly crayon boxes or sets and fabric has caught on to my weakness...
We play a game in my family of calling on birthdays and singing "Happy Birthday" to the birthday person...out of key, fast, slow, but it must be sung in its entirety and that receipent is always glad to hear from us all during the day.
P.s. we aren't in any way singers.

In our family there used to be a church that you could just see peeking over the crest of a hill as you entered the town nearest my grandparents' cottage.
There is always a competition to be the first to call out "I see it!" (the driver has a bit of an advantage here).
Since my dad helped my mom's parents build the cottage when he (they) were in high school ... and my mom;s grandparents also had a cottage on the same lake - its a long standing tradition.

Michael Neiger said...

My girls think sewing IS a game! Since they're still young, it takes a lot of supervision, so when they get to sew, it's a treat for them. (And, blue IS my favorite color!)

Stephany said...

Everytime we are in the car, we play "Slugbug no tagbacks." minus the actual slugging. :) It's just to have a little fun while driving around. My 6 year old and my husband beat me at it. And our four year old will sometimes call out ones that we have just called, but we give her a point for effort. ;)

Janet said...

When we're coming home from town we play "guess what time we'll get home". It is permissible to change your guess multiple times but you can't pick the same time someone else has. It turns into a real contest when we're getting nearer to home as everyone tries to pick the exact minute!

Julie said...

It's not a game per se, but my Dad is a fireman and both my brother and I live overseas, so everytime we see a fire engine on the street, we wave at it and say "Hi Dad" as a way of thinking of him often

I used to play a game with my son in the grocery store-to keep him occupied while I tried to shop-I would peel off the Chiquita banana sticker from the bananas and we would take turns sticking it on one each other-saying "gotcha ya"! We did this until one day my son at age 3 told me "mom, I put the sticker in my nose" -a trip to the ER for some sticker removal and that game ended!

Well, since my favorite color is blue, I feel that trumps all my little family stories...eventhough each evening we play high/low...what was the best part of your day and what was the lowest. My high is always coming home to my family...in my blue kitchen! :)

Red.. That's my favorite color. I'm not sure if this quite counts as a silly game but my husband and I like to blame everything on our cats such as messes or farts.. Silly that's for sure...

With two little girls, everyday is filled with fun silly games, but usually made up by them. Favorite color is purple. :)

Melanie Bettinelli said...

Wow I adore that blue quilt! Blue is my favorite color. I've got out of the quilting groove but maybe winning a nice big stak of fabric would inspire me to clean off my sewing table and whip up some more quilty goodness.

Our kids are 4, 2, and 15 months and their favorite silly game is "scary eyes". That's when we open our eyes really wide and don't blink and intone "scary eyes" in a creepy voice. I'm not sure why it's scary; but the two year-old loves it.

November is my favorite month, too: it is my birthday month. And what a great gift your giveaway fabric would be. Count me in.

Beanie Babies used to make kid dolls that had horrible hair and somewhat scary faces. My son and I used to hide them around the house, in cupboards, the shower, any place to get a little surprise. He is 23 and I miss the game. How about a song about blue....Baby blue, was the color of her eyes. Baby blue like the Colorado skies....OR Blue moon, I saw you standing alone....Gotta love blue! Thanks for the chance,
Deborah

One can never have too many Kona solids! I can't think of any silly games, but I'm sure they will come up and then I'll say, Oh yeah. My favorite color is orange, but blue is good, too! Thanks for counting me in, Amandajean.

Ooh, I just love blue. I am one of those people who would have about 90% blue clothing in my wardrobe, with just a sprinkling of pink. I haven't yet made a blue quilt though, and would just love to win your giveaway.

Many thanks from Jenny, from New Zealand

All those blues would make me anything but blue - I would be pink with happiness. I will be green with envy of whoever wins them (if it's not me). I love orangey-reds best of all.

Well, there's always the classic piddiddle game while driving, I guess it's also known as punch buggy, except we don't punch, and any car besides a VW beetle with one headlight burnt out will do. You have to say Piddiddle "insert category here", e.g. cereal and whoever says a type of cereal last is out :)

Not a game, exactly... when my husband and I get home at the end of long days the first thing we say when we see each other is, "I just started the best part of my day!!"
It helps put the long day behind us and start the evening with a smile. I LOVE those blue colors.

Favorite game right now is between my almost 3 yr old and my 6 month old - the 3 yr old plays peek-a-boo and the 6 month old splits a gut laughing. It's so cute and utterly contagious.

Thanks for the chance to win :)

Hungry Ogre! My husband is the "Hungry Ogre" and he goes after the kids saying, "I'm so hungry." When he catches one of them (or more,) he puts them in the "pot" (aka: the sofa.) While he reaches for the salt and pepper, the child/children escape and the chasing starts all over again! The kids love it and they beg Mom to leave at times just so they can play! I usually go out or I busy myself in quilting!

Purple...my favorite color is purple! I think I will make the Hungry Ogre a quilt if I win the blue fabric!

We like playing "I'm Thinking of Something" when we're on road trips. I used to have a toddler obsessed, I mean OBSESSED, with musical instruments (now less obsessed, but playing violin and trumpet). Our games would go like this:
"I'm thinking of something."
"Stephen, is it a person?"
"No."
"Place?"
"No."
"Instrument?"
"Yeeeessssssssssss!"
