filmstrip

filmstrip
This quilt is going to be a door prize at the retreat that I will be teaching at in November. (That's in 6 weeks!) It is made from Moda's Nouveau fabric line and Kona cotton (color=bone). It was my first time using Kona cotton for sashing a quilt. It was ok, but I'm not hooked on it like I was afraid I might be.

As I mentioned in my last post, the quilt had a redesign along the way. Originally I was going to configure the blocks like this. But I switched it at the last minute. You gotta listen to what the quilt is telling you, right V? ;)

The quilt measures 63" x 77" after washing. (it was 64" x 80" before quilting and washing.)
filmstrip-back
Of course, it's two quilts in one. I L-O-V-E the back. I really need to figure out how to design my quilt backs to be quilt fronts. I am determined to figure it out. Soon! Or else it will drive. Me. CRAZY. (and my husband, too.)

I love this busy print for binding. LOVE it!

I'm happy to have this one done. It was challenging, but well worth it. I think my favorite part was playing with fabric that someone else (Tara) had selected.

Now, on to the next...

  1. Wow. This is fabulous. And the name is perfect. Perfect!! Also love the busy binding. Question: why not a fan of the Kona for the sashing?

  2. Great quilt-especially the back. That would be great for a large print that you just can't bear to cut!

And the binding is great too.

    ReplyDelete
  3. PRETTY! I definitely like it. And I say just flip the quilt over if you like the back, call it the front :-)

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wow that IS a lovely back! Great choice!!! (I'm going to have to try that idea...)

    ReplyDelete
  5. fun! I like how you switched up the design, and of course, the name is just perfect! i'm with you on the back too (and the fact that I often like my backs better than the fronts!) I'm working on a mini quilt right now that has a very similar border...

  6. this is a beautiful beautiful quilt!!i love the back, it's so simple and great! those fabrics are so delicate...

  7. ooohh, i love this quilt! I wish I could make it to your retreat (it's just minutes away from me), but with this baby coming, i have to pass!

  8. I really like your layout better and I love the back and binding. I too have dabbled with making the backings more interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  9. wow I love that!! Great job!

  10. See! I told you guys! Don't plan. It kills the creative process! Love this quilt front and back!
Speaking of which, I planned on making a feathered stripe quilt for this other commission... I'm off on a totally different tangent. (of course)
And as for t his quilt, does one need to go to your class to win this? I think I "need" this quilt. or is it, "I want this one?" need want need want... I love it. well done AJ.

  11. oh! and is that the little lady darling toes I see under that quilt? tell her the big lady says hi! so does B.

  12. Looks great - I love Kona solids, but I'm open to other options. What solids do you prefer?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Love the tiny toes! And the quilt, too, of course! I love the "strip" effect!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love it! All your work is so inspiring! Thanks!

  15. It looks wonderful! I have a theory about the back, I often love my backs more than the front, too. I think that since you're not 'trying' to design the back - it's more organic and free - the result is more at ease. Things frequently look better when you don't over think.

  16. I love everything about this quilt!!! The back is gorgeous and so's the binding!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, it's lovely! I like the change in the setting, from the inspiration quilt. The original is lovely, but this one has its own personality! That door prize winner is going to be SO lucky!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yep...another gorgeous product from our resident guru AJ!:)

I'm curious too....if you aren't in love with Kona solids...
    1. Why?
    2. What would you use instead and...
    3. Why do you like X better?:)

Since I'm new to all this quilting stuff I need you to learn me!:)

  19. I like this better than the original design. Very nice. And, that back could totally be the front!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Great job - I LOVE the back. You will have to share tips on centering it so well. And you HAVE to try shot cotton for sashing if you haven't already. It is my favorite, bar none!

    ReplyDelete
  21. okay so tips for getting your pieced back to be straight? Any, no matter how much I measure and pin, it always ends up coming out a little off.

    What a door prize!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I totally like your chosen layout better! And the back is WONDERFUL!!!!

  23. Too Late! You're ALREADY Crazy LOL! LOVE that quilt -- its'a doorprize??? And the retreat is WHERE? And has HOW many spaces left???? ;-)

  24. That quilt is beautiful. The back is so attractive that it could be reversible. The feet in that pic of the back are just darling! Gives the impression that he or she is the one holding up that huge quilt! So funny. It really is a beautiful piece. I like your layout too. Jenn

  25. The front and the back are both great. You are amazing. Do you ever sleep? A-

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love the layout on this, really original and it sets off the blocks in a fantastic way!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Beautiful! You should just create two quilt backings and put them together in one quilt than you'll have kinda reversible quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love this quilt!
Looks like you already have that whole quilt back as a front thing down ... the back is gorgeous!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good name!
Next time you design a back you like put it aside and make another back for the project at hand. Then baste the first back as a new top. I know, I'm creating a vicious cycle for you. Just try it once and see what happens...

Well...I came here today just to know what kind of thread you use to quilt, since I'm buying some by E-Bay. I thought: "Hmmm...there won't be nothing new today"

And then...that GORGEOUS quilt pops out on my screen! Oh my dog!

    Some tutorial maybe?

    Patricia (from Brazil)

  31. I love it!
And does your child have very long arms to hold up a quilt that size?
    :o)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh I LOVE IT!! Now I am really bummed that I can't go!!! I should make my mom go though, she would love it!!! Too bad you can't go and just hang out, instead of having to stay at the hotel, thing.

I actually like how you changed the layout, I like it better this way!! I might have to try and reprouduce it!! :D Now unless you wanted to make a tutorial on it!!

  33. So pretty. What an amazing, incredible, spectacular door prize!

    ReplyDelete
  34. What a beautiful quilt! Lots of work. You can add this one to the toe catcher on flickr. Cute toes!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I love the quilt. I hadn't thought about making the backs so pretty until I found your blog. I will have to try that. I also Love the back's picture with the little feet poking out. How cute! I also like the "busy binding" idea. I will have to try some new techniques thanks to you!
    Have a great day,
    Lisa

  36. Great quilt! I love how you changed up the blocks to get that effect. Love the back, too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. What do you usually sash with? I love the front and back too. I am thinking of ideas for a "masculine" quilt for my brother's graduation present. This design is now on my list. In solids - not flowers. :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. LOVE THIS!!!! This would be sooo cool done in the authentic collection. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well the struggles were definitely worth it!!! Beautiful quilt!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Absolutely gorgeous! Do you have a hard time centering the backing on as you can't see it when you place the batting on top and then the quilt top? Just wondering if you have a tip for the rest of us???
    Paulette

  41. I love it! Front and back. I too am curious about your not so love of Kona, as everyone else seems to rave? In a thought about your fronts/ backs, you could always design front, design back, and then make them the front of two different quilts!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I love those little feet behind the quilt - aw! The quilt is simply fabulous, as always! Do you ever do retreats in your home State?? Just curious:)

    ReplyDelete
  43. I LOVE this one! I love the blocks in rows like that, it makes it more interesting and different. Love the colors too! I don't know where you find the patience to make all your impressive quilt backs. By the time I make the front I want to just finish it already....so the back usually is a lame sheet or something. :) I LOVE your backs though..they're amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love the layout! Another beauty!

I "discovered" your blog recently and am impressed by the wonderful work that you do. I can't wait to see your next project - I feel inspired!

    ReplyDelete
  46. ok... i'm like a few of the others... HOW do you get the back to stay so perfectly straight? i have 2 tops currently that will have pieced backs, but i'm stalling since i have no idea how to keep them straight when i baste/quilt them.

and.... why are you not a fan of kona? i'm using it for the first time on my wonky log cabins for john's quilt along and i'm not sure i like it 100% yet either. i've used a variety of whites and i just haven't figured out which i like best yet. i figured since there are so many raving about kona, i'd give it a shot.

  47. I love it Amanda Jean. Is your class full?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love this quilt and the back of it. I never used to even think about the back of a quilt - but watching you and several others who make beautiful backings...I am changing my mind...

I think you accomplished having this quilt be reversible - the back is very pretty and would look wonderful as a top...

    ReplyDelete
  49. I love this quilt! I can't believe someone is going to win this as a door prize. How exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh my gosh--I HATE that I won't be in the running to win this either!!!! You are incredible--I just hope you're happy with the results too!

Film in the Fridge went through a phase where each of her backs inspired the front of the next quilt. Maybe you should try that and just love the fact that with them reversible, you get two quilts for one!

I'm going to post on my blog right now about the retreat and maybe you can do short post linking to my blog that will answer everyone's questions!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Wish I was able to partake in your
retreat but alas that is not a reality. Wonderful quilt for one of the "treaters".

  55. gorgeous, my friend!!!

  56. I love the little feet! Another great quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  57. You are so awe-inspiring. I love your blog. Thank you sew very much.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Your quilt is fabulous. I have to laugh at the photo of the backing. Normally you see the feet of the person holding the quilt. There is no way those little legs have arms long enough to be holding up that quilt.
Can you share tips on how to get your quilt backs centered and squared. Yours look so much better than mine.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Fun idea. Now what about those little legs sticking out from the quilt...they are not connected to whoever is holding the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I love the block layout as well as the back. I also would like to know how you manage to center the back of the quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Beautifully done! I can't believe you can let it go!

Will you be posting a tutorial? What a beauty:) The back is just as beautiful as the front.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I wish I had as much time to sew as you do. I am determined to spend time in my sewing room next week since I'm working fewer hours.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love the quilt, especially the little legs and feet!LOL!

Ha, ha, ha - the back is just as lovely as the front :)
I am almost finished my daughter's quilt and want to put a nice back on it so thank you for your inspiration, I like using the leftover bits of fabric in the back, I think it ties the front & back together :)

  78. Love your quilt, but then again I always do, I couldn't help but laugh at the photograph, I had to look twice to be sure quilt wasn't being held by the owner of those tiny little legs!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Perfect title, seriously. Who came up with this one?
And the quilt is awesome, too. I like the strips of white-dominant squares between the ones with more punch.

  91. I LOVE this quilt. I LOVE the front and the back. You are one cool quilt maker. Where do I find that pattern?

    ReplyDelete
  92. ab-so-lutely LOVE it!

  93. like that you didn't put it together in a standard way...the layout is unique and makes it stand out.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I Love this layout - another inspiring creation :)

    ReplyDelete
  95. I love the back of this quilt. Gives me a grand idea to turn the cot quilt I'm making into 2 quilts in one. fantastic!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. I love Flimstrip! Love the quilt, love the name. Love it all. I love the shot of the back... with the little legs and feet peeking out. Too cute!

I'm a Kaufman Kona freak (snow is my fave). I've tried the bone on one of my quilts - and not a fave of mine. Nice, but not feelin' the love for it like I do snow.

    You quilt has legs!!!

I also wanted to let you know I started the 9 patch quilt along with you but I got super motivated and got all the squares done early and I opted not to do any border. Anyway, it was my first quilt ever, so it has lots of mistakes but I love it nonetheless.

I just finished up doing just the star blocks from your star quilt along and made a lap quilt out of it and did stippling for the first time in my life (which I guess isn't surprising since this is only my second quilt). It was a PAIN to do but I love love love the outcome.

Anyway, thanks for all the help you've given me without even realizing it. Pictures of the quilts are on my blog if you want to see them.
