candy shop quilt

candy shop
This quilt was made especially for scrap reduction. It's all 6" (cut) squares. I'm trying a little experiment with my scrap bucket. Nothing new is going in and I am going to see just how far those scraps go. I may be on this journey for quite some time!

To quilt it, I just "drew" a loopy line over each seam line. This is how I quilted most of my quilts before I learned to stipple. (It was this or stitch in the ditch.) So I did a great plenty of quilts this way. It was nice to revisit this technique after many years. It quilted up really fast.

The binding is one of my favorite parts of this quilt.

For the back, I pieced it. All from the stash. Again.

I'm trying to figure out why 9 times out of 10 I like the backs of my quilts better than the fronts. Maybe I need to start designing my quilts backwards?
----
As an aside, I finished the sweet quilt weeks ago but only posted it yesterday due to scheduling on the Moda Bakeshop. I am working on my wips and making great strides, but I'm not working day and night over here. I promise. :) But, as my friend Mary said, with school being back in session, quilt production must be up. And it is! Yipee!

  1. Really attractive! Guess your quilt just goes to prove why "scrap" quilts have a huge following of their very own.

I'm starting to become a fan of pieced backings. You're right . . . they come out just as appealing as some fronts!

  2. Another darling quilt! I love the back, too. Maybe it's the big pieces in the back that are so appealing? As a fabric fanatic you can see a big piece of lovely, wonderful fabric.

  3. Beautiful quilt! I just started quilting recently, and I can't wait for the day that I have enough scraps to make a whole quilt! I just have a tiny little bag of scraps now :)

  8. Lovely!!!!
I just stash busted almost the same quilt in 4-1/2 inch squares, dark and medium colours. My husband loves it - go figure... all the hard work piecing and patterns and he likes squares. I quilted in the ditch, nothing fancy.
I'm going to make plenty more of these!

  11. I love this! It's very impressive you made that just from scraps! And I really like the way you quilted it... I might have to try that sometime!

  12. really lovely! great colors in this one (and how fun that it's entirely from your scraps!) i'm loving the back too, and I agree - i often find myself liking the backs of my quilts better than (or as much as) the fronts...

  14. Very pretty! How long did it take you to make? It seems like you have one finished at least once a week! :D

  16. I LOVE it. After I finish all my quilts in the works I need to start some scrap reduction quilts too.

  17. I love your quilting in loops just over the seams! I bet it makes for a super soft, but sturdy quilt! I'll have to try that sometime! Great idea! And I need to START a quilt for myself! Seriously - before the snow flies! ;-)

    Amanda Jean,

The simplicity is great! The first two, (and only two quilts) I have made were pieced six inch squares! Not as big as yours though....

    I just adore the back!!!!

  19. Cute cute cute!
It's good to be reminded that quilts don't always need to be complex designs to be stunning!

  20. The loopy quilting on the seams is so cool...I love the look and I love this quilt.

  21. Ooh, I like that quilting. The problem with liking the back more than the front is that it will lead to purchases of big pieces of fabric to recreate the looks! And there is nothing wrong with that! Okay, not good for scrap reduction, but they would probably be big enough pieces to qualify as stash, not scraps.

  23. Great Quilt! The colors are so cheerful. What's the finished size?

  24. I love your quilt - scrap quilts are the best :) B The quilt back is great too - pieced backings are fun and colorful, and have a "purpose" in life ;) I'm definitely going to try your wonderful loopies quilting idea - I love it!

  25. You and I are on the same path. Using all my scraps and stash before anything new. I set out my goals for the Quilting season on my site. aseemlylife.com
You did know that today is opening season right?

  30. nice scraps, beautiful quilt! I applaud you on not adding to your scrap pile, but using it instead. Do you pre-cut your scraps into 6" squares, or do it as you pull the scraps out? I find I just stuff everything in the way it is, and then cut what I need when I need it, but not sure if that's the best way to attack it??!!
I recently pieced a backing for a quilt that I ended up liking so much it has become the front of another quilt! The backs just seem to allow even greater creativity to occur!

  31. So what am I hearing from you, Amandajean? You're now joining me in designing "Which is Which" quilts? Hooray for you!! It's so fun and so cool to have them completely reversible (just in case you spill a bit of tea or something...LOL) Love this new one of yours!!! I still can't figure out how you produce so much so quickly. I'm going to call you , Superwoman!

  34. I love all of your quilts and turn to your blog first for inspiration. And I have to give you credit for getting me to move on making quilts again, so far this year I have completed six of them, which just blows me away when I think about it. Now, if only I could keep one for myself, hmmm, gotta work on that.

  35. I need to do more with my scraps. Yours look so great - front and back.

I use to throw away all of my scraps but now I know better. You make some wonderful quilts I enjoy reading your blog. There is a quilting book out there about making 2 sided quilts I have it and I think that you should use both on your quilts because both sides are beautiful. Also I just started making quilted stuffed frogs a pattern from Me and my sister designs they are quick and made from scraps.

  42. Lovely! I should try to do a scrap quilt.

  43. wow! this is so cute! i love simple patchwork quilts. i just started quilting and these are always my favorites. i love the quilting technique and think i may have to give this one a try! Normally I stipple, but it is so time consuming, so this would be great on patchwork quilts!

  44. love it.!! the colors are great!!

  45. Continue to LOVE your blog and your designs. I'd love to hear your thoughts/suggestions for selecting fabrics. I just adore your "scrappy" style, but I'm new to quilting and seem to always select a fabric "line" for my quilts because I lack the knowledge to make a variety of fabrics go together. Any insight you could offer (on an upcoming post - hint, hint) would be fabulous!!

  46. The quilt looks great. What a great idea for using up scraps. Now I have something to do with the bags and bags of scraps I have in my cupboards. Take care Carol

I really like the simple quilting..may have to try it!!

  51. Oh, I need to get at my scraps a little more too. It's getting a little crazy. I've almost gotten rid of all the old Christmas scraps in the second 9-patch. Now I just need to start on the rest of the stuff. Love this quilt. I always love pink and green together. I hope my quilt production goes up now that my kids are back in school too!

  52. Just goes to show that sometimes the simplest (and cheapest!) designs go a long way. Great, cheerful colors -- another happy quilt!

  53. I love the quilting! Thanks for the idea. I'm new to quilting and am practicing my free motion but it may be a while before I am brave enough to do it on a real quilt. But I think I could do this one successfully!

  54. I think scraps multiply while we sleep so you may never find the bottom of your scrap bin. But they do make lovely quilts. Yours is gorgeous. Have a great day! Em

I too am working on scrap reduction. I found a wonderful system for both storing scraps and using them in great and creative ways over at quiltsville blog. You should check it out if you haven't already. she even shows you how to get bonus quilts made in between other projects! I just love your blog and check it every day, you are a quilting idol!!!

  58. I really love this one. I wish I had your stash...beautiful. Can you call my husband and explain "Stash" to him...maybe it would help coming from you :)

Question: What kind of foot did you do the quilting with? I really love it. It makes the quilt pucker in a vintage way.

Also I am about to get my Flea Market Fancy Quilt stippled. I totally used your tutorail. About time since I started it back in January! Thanks for all the help on that again.

  59. great quilt, love it. I will try the wiggly line over the seam, that might help with my stipple practice! Good work... again. :)

  60. I'm with you, I sometimes love the backs more. I've thought about just quilting 2 pieces of solid/semi-plain materials together. This one looks great on both sides.

  64. Quilting is something that I would love to be able to do on my own. We have a tradition in my family that when a daughter gets married, we make them a quilt for their bed. I spent many hours with my sisters hand quilting in the ditch. That's all I can do and it's not so good. Did you do this by hand?? It's beautiful! Both sides.

  65. You are soo prolific!! Goodness!! All the recent quilts are just lovely, as usual!
