red + white

Here is my quilt top made from the blocks I received from the Virtual Quilting Bee. It's nice to finally have it assembled!

I thought long and hard how to put these blocks into a quilt top. I couldn't decide what color to use for sashing, so instead, I added a 3" border (3.5" cut) around each block, which made each block 18.5" unfinished. The blocks are HUGE! It was fun to be able to put 12 monster blocks together to make up a substantial quilt top. I much preferred adding borders to each block rather than working with long sashing strips. The colors of the blocks lent themselves well to adding white borders to half of the blocks and red to the other half. The quilt top measures 54" x 72".

Now I have to come up with something for the back. From my stash, of course. :)

I'd like to say thanks to the lovely ladies that sent me such fabulous blocks!

  4. Wow! I love it and the borders look great. I too would rather put borders then work with the large pieces of sashing.

  26. Fantastic! I've been collecting red/white prints and solids to make a 2 color quilt, but am nervous about it because I don't pre-wash my fabrics. Are yours pre=washed and if not, how are you going to prevent the red from bleeding? Will you use a color catcher every time you wash it?

  27. amandajean,
it looks GREAT. if haven't even seen a sneak peak of this. which is all the more fun sometimes. can't wait to see what you come up with for the back. it will be fabulous for sure!:)

  28. fabric fanatic,

i don't know if i pre-washed the fabric or not. i did a hot water test to see if the red would bleed or not. i had 2 red solids that i did this on. one bled and one did not. the one that bled, i handwashed until it wouldn't bleed anymore. you can be sure that i will be very very very careful when i wash this one. every time. :)

  42. It's spectacular. The borders look very much a part of each block - like they came with the blocks. I love our little (big) virtual world of sewing bees - it's such a fun modern interpretation of the craft we love so much.

  52. What a great quilt! I may be in the minority, but I think it would make a great quilt for a baby (maybe with a black and white back). It would be so visually stimulating!

Anyway, it looks great. I love your site. You inspired me to make my first quilt (with a very simple pieced back too!).

  70. I didn't know how to email you...

Do you ever use sheets to back quilts? I do.

On the Bargainst website today...they mentioned a sale at The Company Store. They have cute sheets on sale for $3.00, $4.00, $5.00 would make fab quilt squares or back your quilt them with at super great prices.

I ordered 3 cute twin sheets and paid $10.97 with free shipping. Details are on my blog. That is over 6 yards of fabric? Do you think this is a steal?
